En 1901, deux universitaires anglaises arpentent les allées fleuries du Petit Trianon, à
l’extrémité nord-ouest des jardins du château de Versailles. Malgré leur émerveillement,
chacune ressent un malaise qui les prend à la gorge. Le temps semble figé et les personnes
qu’elles croisent paraissent tout droit venues d’un autre temps, aussi bien dans leur façon de
parler que par leur accoutrement. Devant une terrasse ombragée, l’une des visiteuses croise
le regard d’une femme sans âge, occupée à dessiner depuis la pelouse. Quelques mois plus
tard, l’universitaire croise par hasard un portrait de la reine Marie-Antoinette, et reste sans
voix. Il s’agit sans aucun doute de la dessinatrice du parc de Versailles...
