En 2013, en Islande, une société commerciale a été chargée de construire une nouvelle route pour permettre aux automobilistes de rejoindre plus rapidement la péninsule d’Alftanes, depuis la banlieue de Reykjavik, la capitale. La construction de cette route impliquait la destruction d’une grande parcelle d'une lande sauvage. Mais en décembre 2013, le projet est retardé. Les autorités locales doivent faire face à un problème très inhabituel : une mobilisation d’écologistes et de défenseurs des elfes. Selon l’association Friends of Lava, ceux qui constituent le Huldufolk, le peuple caché des elfes, ont élu domicile dans la région. On relève en effet des traces de leur passage : la lande abrite une église elfique. C’est un monument religieux très répandu dans les coins de nature de ce pays empreint de mysticisme. Selon plus de la moitié des Islandais, les elfes existent, et il ne vaut mieux pas les déranger...
