When it comes to beauty, some people approach it with excitement and a flurry of activity, while others take a calm, methodical approach. When it comes to plastic surgery, boring is actually better.

Dr. Bass explains his concept of “boring beauty”—why slow, thoughtful decision-making leads to the best results. Rushing into procedures may feel exciting, but taking your time ensures you make the right choices.

Of course, achieving your beauty goals should be fun and fulfilling, but on the execution side, a steady, careful approach by your plastic surgeon is key to success.

(00:01):
Welcome to Park AvenuePlastic Surgery Class,
the podcast where we explore controversiesand breaking issues in plastic
surgery. I'm your cohost, Summer Hardy,
a clinical assistant at BassPlastic Surgery in New York City.
I'm excited to be here with Dr. LawrenceBass, Park Avenue plastic surgeon,
educator and technology innovator.
The title of today'sepisode is Boring Beauty.

(00:24):
This is another episodein our beauty series,
the series where we present and discussDr. Bass's advice and philosophy about
your beauty and how to put togetheryour beauty program. Okay, Dr. Bass,
you've piqued my curiosity again, what is this episode about?
What is boring beauty?
Well, when we think aboutworking on our beauty,

(00:45):
we can have a lot of mania. Wecan have a lot of excitement.
We can have a flurry of intenseactivity or we can be very
calm,
very organized andmethodical in planning and
executing the beauty plan.
And so this episode is about

(01:08):
taking that approach andworking in that fashion
to achieve our beauty goals.
Okay, so why is boring better?
So boring beauty meansyou're deliberating,
you're thinking carefully.You're not rushing,

(01:30):
you are taking your time to makesure you're making the right
decision. History, changing yourface or your body appearance. I mean,
people see your face all day, every day.
So making sure you'recertain that a certain
treatment procedure orchange is the right decision

(01:52):
is a pretty good idea because if youdo something you decide two weeks
later was a bad idea,
that's going to show all day everyday until you can correct it if it's
correctable.
Okay. And what does boring allow?
So what boring allowsis a focus on process.

(02:14):
We're not rushing. It'smore logic, less emotion.
So maybe the Mr. Spock of beauty.
Okay, I get the idea,
but isn't it supposed to be funplanning and getting plastic surgery?
Absolutely.
It's very fun and it'svery emotionally satisfying

(02:36):
to achieve your beauty goals. Andthe process should be fun as well.
So there's nothing wrong with fun.
The emotion is okay on theexperience side and also
on the perception of beauty side,
but it's not as usefulin decision making and
definitely not on the executionside by the plastic surgeon.

(03:00):
That's where boringand methodical severely
works to your advantage over being very
flip,
very casual for very rushed
and hepped up about things.
Being calm and boringreally helps you succeed at

(03:24):
achieving your goals, particularly onthe execution side with the surgeon.
That makes sense. How did youcome upon this concept, Dr. Bass?
I put this idea intowords many years ago when
some of the big reality TVplastic surgery shows were

(03:44):
on the networks, theSwan, Extreme Makeover,
Plastic Surgery 90210, Miami Slice.
These were reality TV shows thatshowed patients getting plastic
surgery. And one of my patientswho is a major network producer,
asked me at the time, she said, "Dr. Bass,

(04:05):
there are so many great plasticsurgeons in New York City.
You are a great plastic surgeon.
Why isn't there a reality plasticsurgery show in New York City?"
And I said to her, "we're boring, right?
If you need surgery onyour body, on your face,
we're a really good choicebecause we're boring,

(04:29):
we're careful, we're grounded, stable,
but we're not very entertaining.
And TV shows are aboutentertainment and boring doesn't
work there." And she said, "you know,
you're right." So that's whenI first thought about this,
and I was reminded of this more recently,

(04:52):
and that led me to planthis specific episode.
So I saw a bank commercial wherethey talked about boring banking,
and they said, boringbanking launches rockets.
It launches your retirementand your financial security,
and it lets you pursueall your hopes and dreams.
So getting your beautywith boring beauty does

(05:13):
exactly the same thing. Lets youfull fulfill your hopes and dreams,
get the confidence of looking the wayyou envision yourself image where you'd
like to style yourself.
And so boring beauty is extremely
powerful.
Thank you, Dr. Bass, for layingout this fascinating concept to us.
