Meet our new co-host Summer Hardy, hear a recap of our podcast's journey, and get a preview of the exciting episodes ahead, from interviews with industry innovators to lively debates on the latest technologies.

In 2021, when medical meetings and hospital conferences were still online, rather than in person,  Dr. Bass launched the Park Avenue Plastic Surgery Class podcast to share his extensive knowledge of aesthetic plastic surgery with the public.

From his window on the world, Dr. Bass offers a "Park Avenue perspective" on patient care, breaking down cutting-edge techniques, exploring history, debunking myths, and simplifying complex topics while providing a realist approach to navigating plastic surgery and cutting through social media noise.

(00:01):
Welcome to Park AvenuePlastic Surgery Class,
the podcast where we explore controversiesand breaking issues in plastic
surgery. I'm your co-host, Summer Hardy,
a clinical assistant at BassPlastic Surgery in New York City.
I'm excited to be here with Dr. LawrenceBass, Park Avenue plastic surgeon,
educator, and technology innovator.

(00:22):
The title of today's episodeis Podcast Update 2024.
The podcast has completedthree full years of content.
As we embark on a fourth year,
it's good time to look back atwhat the podcast has done and look
forward to what we're planning.

(00:42):
Before we get to that look and discussion,
I have another announcement.
The podcast has a new co-host.
I'm delighted to introduce Summer Hardy.
Summer is a clinical assistantat Bass Plastic Surgery
and will take over the jobof co-hosting the podcast and

(01:03):
helping to elucidate the topics ina manner that's understandable for
laypeople. Summer, welcome.
Thank you, Dr. Bass.
I'm excited to be here and look forwardto helping our listeners learn about the
fascinating world of plasticsurgery. So without further delay,
let's get into today's topic.Going back to the beginning,

(01:25):
what led you to start the podcast?
The podcast got started in 2021,
and this was past the pointwhen we had suspension of
elective care that took placeduring the COVID pandemic,
but we still had a lot of activeCOVID and things certainly were not in
any way normal. Most medical meetingsat that time were still remote,

(01:49):
and a few had started up hybridwith most people attending
remotely and hospitalconferences also had flipped to
remote, so I was doing a lotless lecturing to colleagues,
a lot less training with theresidents who were learning plastic
surgery.
At the podcast provided a means forme to share my perspective on all

(02:14):
things in aesthetic plastic surgery.
Research and technology innovation,
and what is now calledtranslational research,
taking basic science bench laboratory
discoveries,
taking engineering andbringing that into the clinical
arena that helps informhow to incorporate cutting

(02:39):
edge advances in plasticsurgery, clinical care,
and in plastic surgery decision making,
and I was looking for a wayto share my experiences,
my expertise,
and opinions on new technologiesin aesthetic plastic surgery.
Ken Greenberg, the president of HG Media,

(03:00):
suggested the idea of a podcast toprovide a broader audience for these
kinds of educational activities.
HG Media is the company thatproduces these podcasts for
us,
and Ken Greenberg is a man I'veworked with for many years producing
videos for my medical lecturesas well as various marketing

(03:23):
activities.
Okay, that makes sense to me.
Now let's talk about the namePark Avenue Plastic Surgery Class
Podcast.
Well, of course, I practice inNew York City on Park Avenue,
and that's one of the hotbeds of plastic
surgery activity worldwide.

(03:43):
I don't think we're necessarily anybetter than plastic surgeons in other
parts of the world,
but it is cutting edge orstate of the art and it's a
highly successful,
highly refined renditionof plastic surgery.
So I think it's veryinstructive for people to

(04:03):
understand with thatPark Avenue perspective,
how to decide about their clinical care,
how we fit things together tohelp our patients look their best.
The idea of the class isthat these episodes are
really little classes or studies to help

(04:26):
inform people,
and that narrows the gap in knowledgebetween the plastic surgeon and the
patient.
You can't ever get to the surgeon'slevel of knowledge or experience having
trained and then practiced for decades,
but the less of a mismatchin background knowledge,
the better it is when it comes time forpeople to decide what treatment they

(04:50):
want or how to proceedwith plastic surgery.
And what's the approach the podcast takes?
The podcast tries to presentcutting edge plastic surgery and
aesthetic medicine, review history,
briefly debunk myths,
and make things understandableto laypeople. Most important,

(05:13):
we're trying to help people take arealist approach to understanding and
consuming plastic surgery.
There's a ton of noise out thereabout plastic surgery in the
media, in social media, on the internet,
and we're trying to quiet down all that

(05:34):
noise and get to the kernel of what's real
in deciding about plastic surgery. The podcast is not commercial.
No one can pay to be on thepodcast or to have a certain view
expressed on the podcast.
What we discuss represents myprofessional opinion or that of the

(05:56):
various guests that come on,
and we intentionally try to showcasedifferences of opinion among the
experts in a respectfulbut open-minded fashion so
listeners can see the pluses and minuses.
Rather than that,
there's some absolutelyright answer or single best

(06:19):
way.
Okay. Thanks for explaining.
What are some of your favoriteepisodes over the past three years?
Well, we've had a lot ofcontent in three years,
but some of the facelift episodesare definitely my favorites.
Deep Dive on the Deep PlaneFacelift with Dr. Jason Bloom

(06:41):
and the episode on different facelifttechniques with Dr. Sherrell Aston,
but we have many, many facelift episodes.
Don't Fear the F Word, Beforeand After the Facelift,
so those were all favorites.
I also really like the Powerof One where we discuss

(07:01):
making a unified approachto all of your surgical and
nonsurgical aesthetic needs.
Over Filler or Just Overfilled?
was another great episode,
and that's just one of severalfiller episodes that we've had,
which is another important topic. Finally,

(07:22):
some of the very technicalscientific episodes are
fascinating.
The episodes on exosomes andregenerative medicine really
presented a lot of cutting edge science,
and of course the inaugural episodes have

(07:43):
to be among my favorites. Those are the Barbie Meets Star Wars
episodes,
and it's ironic that we talk
about the Star Wars program,
which came out ofNational Defense Labs and

(08:03):
Barbie and that those werethe inaugural episodes years
before Barbie and Oppenheimerwarped in what ultimately
became one of the National Defense Labs.
So we had those episodes yearsbefore those movies came out,
and my favorite series isprobably Decades of Face,

(08:27):
and we've had so muchexpertise from so many really
outstanding guests. It's hard to pick,
and I don't want to single anyone out,
but we've really had an outstanding groupof guests who have had a huge amount
to contribute.
Can you share any information about whatsubjects are popular with listeners?

(08:48):
So I have my favorites, which I'vejust described, but you're right,
Summer, that listeners havetheir favorites and the
facelift and skincareepisodes tend to be the top
downloaded episodes.
The number one episode in termsof downloads was Daxxify with

(09:09):
Dr. Kane,
but other very popularepisodes were the facelift
episode with Dr. Aston and the DeepDive on Deep Plane Facelift with Dr.
Bloom.
So what the listeners like andwhat I like match to a certain
extent, but you've been a listenerto the podcast before this summer,

(09:31):
so maybe you can tell me what someof your favorite episodes are.
I also have similar favoriteepisodes to you and other listeners.
I like the Deep Dive on Deep Planefacelift with Dr. Bloom. The Skin Is In:
The Growing Focus on Skin Quality,
and I really like theDecades of Face series.
So what's in store going forward?

(09:53):
The podcast will continue to bringyou up to the minute information
about the latestaesthetic plastic surgery,
as well as my analysis ofwhere these things fit in,
because that's the real challenge. There are so many technologies out,
there are so many optionsand which ones really work,

(10:13):
which ones address what kind of problems,
that's where the challengecomes in, not just for patients,
but for aesthetic surgeons to figure
out how to put things together.
We'll start some fascinating newseries and we'll continue to feature
authoritative guests.

(10:35):
We'll also revisit and update sometopics as things change or to see
how new devices work out.
Finally,
we're planning to explore some ofthe creative capabilities of plastic
surgeons and what led themto enter the field. I mean,
plastic surgeons, many of them arevery interesting people with many,

(10:56):
many different outstanding skillsbeyond just their surgical or
medical capabilities,
and so we'll explore that a littlebit with some guests coming up.
We'll also talk to some medicalindustry inventors to learn how they
came to innovate,
something that was a gamechanger in aesthetic medicine

(11:20):
and what they think aboutthe future of the industry.
I can't wait. Any final pointsfor our listeners, Dr. Bass?
All the episodes going back threeyears are out there on all the
podcast platforms.
That means you can stream or downloadany of the episodes at any time,
so if you have a question or interestin a particular area of plastic

(11:44):
surgery,
this is your reference library toget a detailed discussion on that
particular topic, a class ifyou will, on that subject.
This is good advanced study priorto a consultation with your plastic
surgeon,
or just to get more information andunderstanding before making any final

(12:06):
decisions.
