When I announced that we weregoing to be doing Pat's Peeps,
we were in northern Italy and wewere on the Mercedes coach and
they let me speak to the folksand I broke the news that day
that, hey, I've got a new thinggoing on, this group going to
(00:58):
Italy and Ireland and France andGermany and Austria.
We are the Pat's Peeps groupand I've started this whole
business and it's going to be apodcast.
And here we are, up to 200,almost three away on the 27th
day of January 2025,.
Man, looking down my studiowindow into the bright sunshine
(01:19):
In fact I kind of need to closemy beautiful window covers a
little bit from American RiverFlooring, local business.
A little bit from AmericanRiver Flooring, local business,
my friends, american RiverFlooring with these beautiful
window coverings.
So I hope you had a wonderfulweekend, pat Walsh.
I host the Pat Walsh Show onKFPK Radio in Sacramento, 93.1
(01:41):
FM, 1530 AM.
We stream live everywhere onyour free iHeart app.
Here is some big news.
You know, last podcast on 196,I told you I had some big news
to share with you and I justmentioned going to Italy.
Let me just start by sayingthis I am so blessed I've said
it before, I'm going to say itagain To be working with you
know, conservative tours and wehave this Pats Peeps group.
(02:04):
In the last 15 months let methink about that November,
december, january, february, march, november, may, yeah, yeah
, the last 15 months we havegone to Northern Italy, to
(02:28):
Southern Italy, to Ireland, andnow on April 3rd we're going for
11 days to the Italian Riviera.
I just got good news today.
Did we have more than sold thattrip out?
Oh, my God, we have such a goodtrip and we have so many good
people and such a great group ofpeople to go.
We sold it out.
(02:50):
And guess what?
As of today, I can't believe it, but I'm going to tell you
you're going to hear it here onmy Pat's Peeps 197 before I even
say it on my radio show tonightwe have another trip coming up.
We're going to go to Sicily.
Can you imagine we're going togo to Sicily this fall.
(03:13):
This is I look, I can't evenbelieve it.
I never thought I would travel,but here I am.
Every five months we're goingto a special place.
We're going to go to Sicily.
We're taking the Godfather Tour, and that's serious part of it.
(03:33):
I haven't even done my ad yetfor this on radio.
I'm going to do it tonight forthe first time.
But thank you to all of thePats peeps, over 40-some people,
who are going with us on ourtrip to the Italian Riviera.
That is so incredible.
And just to announce to youthat we're going to Sicily now.
(03:55):
Oh my God.
Like I say, I never knew I wouldtravel, and now, every five
months.
For me it is just, it's blowingmy mind to see the world like
this.
The other part of it is I don'tlike to fly.
So I've.
I guess I can officially saythat not only have I become a
world traveler, but which Ididn't know I was going to, but
(04:19):
have I overcome my fear offlying?
I don't know.
I keep doing it, fear of flying.
I don't know, I keep doing it,which means maybe I have
overcome that fear, but I stillhave it.
It's still there when I'm onthe plane, but I keep doing it.
I just don't want to.
I don't want it.
I don't want to put anynegativity in there at all,
because it's not.
It's so good, wow, anyhow.
(04:44):
So I just had to break thatnews to you.
Not break it to you, but justtell you that news today.
I'm not breaking the news, I'mjust telling it to you.
Oh man, sicily, can you imagineSicily, anyhow, wow.
So I'm not sure if that'll beSeptember, october, somewhere in
(05:05):
there.
The only problem with that isit's always right there.
You know the World Series isgoing on.
It would drive me insane if theDodgers were in a World Series
and I wasn't able to watch it,you know.
And then it's also footballseason.
Okay, whatever, I can handlemissing a couple of games there,
but if the Dodgers are in aWorld Series I'm going to go
(05:26):
insane.
So I'll have to figure that out, if that even coincides with
the time.
But that's beside the point.
So blessed to have thisopportunity and so many people
that are going to join us, theItalian Riviera is going to be
special.
All right, enough of that Now.
I have been at this radiostation.
For those of you who don't know, I started at Talk 650.
(05:51):
I used to be at Light 95, light95 FM.
Play all your favorite lighthits.
Light 95 FM, kpay.
We just heard Wilson PhillipsIn front of that.
It was Michael Bolton.
I'm sorry, started things offwith Paul Davis at that time.
Hey, listen, if you hear thesound of the ocean waves, be the
15th caller when you hear thatand you're going to qualify to
(06:13):
win tickets to see MichaelBolton.
Okay, first of all, this iswhat you should do.
You have the cart right, youput the cart in there, the sound
of the ocean waves, and youclick that cart in between.
You know Chicago and Journey,or whatever you were playing.
I liked playing those songs, chicago and Journey, anyhow.
I mean, come on, you're goingto qualify to win Michael Bolton
(06:37):
tickets.
Really, how about just givingthem Michael Bolton tickets?
But anyhow, you'd qualify towin.
So be listening to the sound ofthe ocean waves, and then you'd
play music and so I'm workingthere.
And then the next thing, youknow, a couple of things
(07:00):
happened.
Anyhow, I wasn't working thereanymore.
I had top ratings on AM and FM,but I had a boss at the time,
and now I'm reluctant to saythis boss's name.
We'll just call him Dave.
That was his name and I'mreluctant to say his name
because all of these years laterhe's a good guy and we get
along.
But you know, he fired me forsomething nothing related for
(07:22):
radio.
I was, I had number one ratingson AM and FM and I was working
split shifts at the time in my30s, and someone didn't wash a
dish in the sink in the kitchen,in the break room, and because
of this there was a notice putup that said hey, sorry, we
warned people about not washingyour dishes and because we had
to do it for you, we've pulledthe microwave out and we pulled
(07:44):
the coffee pot out and we pulledthe refrigerator out of the
break room.
Well, it's five o'clock in themorning.
I need Java to get my dayrolling.
You know I'm about to eatcoffee and I didn't leave my cup
or whatever in the sink.
So for everyone to pay theprice anyhow, I'm going off
(08:05):
whatever this thing.
So for everyone to pay theprice, anyhow, I'm going off on
this thing.
That happened in 1993.
I'd been working there for quitea while.
Well, maybe, yeah, I'd beenworking there for almost four
years with my own show, numberone ratings, am and FM, as a
news anchor, as a radio DJ, as asports guy.
(08:26):
I did all of this stuff.
I did AM and FM, doing all ofthis stuff.
Anyhow, I'm in a break room andI'm talking to myself.
Essentially, I said, oh God,what are you got to be kidding
me?
They're going to pull a coffeepot out.
You know, it's first thing inthe morning.
I'm a little grumpy.
I've got to do some news and Idon't get any coffee because
someone left their coffee pot.
I go, that's just BS, man, Ijust can't believe that.
(08:49):
Well, someone heard that theycalled me in there and they said
what are you talking about?
And I said just what I said.
I mean, why should we pay theprice?
Well you know we're going tohave to let you go For for
complaining that there's nocoffee pot or microwave.
I mean that doesn't make senseand that's fine.
Well, I gave the boss and Iremember Gloria, who was 80
(09:10):
years old at the time God blessGloria.
If she's still around she'sprobably 117 years old Love her.
She sat there with her beehivehairdo and her those pointed far
side glasses, but she was asweet lady and she just wanted
what was best for the company.
She sat there looking at me wasthat, as I told the boss, I
(09:31):
gave him a piece of my mind.
All right, I, just I, I justyeah, I didn't get out of
control.
I just I just had some thingsto say.
Like you gotta be kidding me,man.
You're gonna fire me for sayingthat.
Really, wow, man, I think I, Ithink I may have uh, made a
remark about his white guy.
You know uh fro, you know artgarfunkel fro, and perhaps made
(09:56):
mention that he needed a wideload sign on his tuchus when he
walked down the hallways, maybesomething to that effect.
I wasn't happy about it, Ididn't deserve it, and neither
did anyone else, and yeah, Igotta let go for that.
That's fine, I don't care,whatever.
So.
And now he's a good guy andyears later we've never talked
(10:16):
about that.
But we became friends onfacebook and we mentioned we,
you know, say hi to each otherand everything.
So that's cool.
That building burnt down too.
I remember I got so many copiesof the Chico Enterprise record,
like not long after I was letgo from there.
Boy, I could tell you somestalker stories from that place.
(10:38):
Anyhow, the place burned downout on Kramer Lane and that was
a beautiful lane out there.
It was a nice.
It was in a house, it was anice home Like burned down out
on Kramer Lane and that was abeautiful lane out there.
It was in a house, it was anice home, like an older home on
Kramer Lane.
And when that thing burned down, this guy who fired me, he was
on the front of the ChicoEnterprise record and he's got
this look on his face like oh no, no.
(11:00):
And behind it the place istorched.
It was sad, but you had a bunchof people sending it to you.
Hey, pat, interesting timing.
They fire you and the placegoes up and smoke.
Healthy water from Moon HealingStudio Melissa Moon, have you
checked her out in Auburn yetman, I mean, she is good for
(11:21):
your life.
Talk to her about all thethings she does to heal WWW, as
they used to say WWW.
She is good for your life.
Talk to her about all thethings she does to heal www.
I used to say www.
Mlmoonstudiocom,mlmoonstudiocom.
Moon Healing Studio in AuburnWonderful water that she has.
Anyhow, I could tell you somestalker stories.
(11:45):
Maybe that's for another show, but at the time.
Now I'm looking for work.
I mean, just days earlier I'dbeen talking to Larry Bird and
Michael Jordan and I'm doing allthis stuff and I really am
going at it and now I havenothing.
But I see this guy on TV, bobNathan, and Bob Nathan along
with Dave Williams.
They used to be Bob and Dave onthe morning show on KFBK radio,
(12:06):
where I work now HeritageStation, as I always say, like
the first or second 50,000 wattstation in the universe and Bob
and Dave in the morning.
Bob Nathan, dave Williams andDave and Bob, bob and Dave,
whatever it.
But they worked together for along time and they were good.
(12:27):
I mean two great broadcastersand anyhow.
So I saw him.
I saw Bob Nathan, who was nolonger with KFPK for whatever
reason, I don't really know.
I have some ideas, but I don'tknow.
And I see him on a TVcommercial with the late Rick
(12:48):
Stewart, who I love Rick Stewarttoo.
Rick Stewart had the big, deepvoice.
Rick Stewart looks like we'remaking a connection with Pat
Walsh.
Well, I see these two guys onTV on a commercial, sitting on
stools in an empty studio andthey're talking about a brand
new talk station that's going tocome to Sacramento and it's
(13:10):
going to be Talk 650, kste.
And I thought, oh, that's whatI'm going to do.
I'm going to go back to myhometown of Sacramento, elk
Grove, and I'm going to workthere.
So I come down from Chico, Iapply, and never in a hurry.
Derek Murray hired me, michaelEspinosa was the boss there.
(13:31):
I get a job and now I'm theboard op.
I can tell you all kinds ofstories about that too.
And so now I'm working at KSTE.
They're not sure exactly whatto do with me, but I have
(13:52):
experience and I'm pretty goodon the air and they're trying to
find a role for me.
At first I was a board op, likeI said, and then I did a couple,
then I was a producer, butbefore that they had me for a
very brief time, very brief time.
(14:18):
They had me work as a reporter, like on the street reporter,
and I remember I one of thethings I did, I covered a
burning hotel downtownSacramento that smelled like
urine.
(14:38):
I remember that very well, golly man, it smelled like urine
and and the alleyway there.
But the hotel had burned andthey had me go out and do it.
Now I wasn't a street reporter.
I've never done that.
I'm not a news anchor.
I have done that.
I did that at KAAA, kzzz, radioOpen, kingman, arizona.
I've done it on KSTE.
I've done it a number of places, kpay, but that's not me.
(15:05):
I was the sports guy for a longtime and now I'm a talk show
host.
So I remember the hotel burningin Sacramento.
I covered that.
Then I covered you know what Icovered April 24, 1995.
So I had been at this radiostation for going on two years.
I'd been there two years onemonth at this radio station for
going on two years.
I've been there two years onemonth and the Unabomber sent a
(15:29):
bomb to the California ForestryAssociation, remember this
Killed the association'spresident, gilbert Murray.
That bomb exploded when Murrayopened the package which was
addressed to his predecessor,william Dennison.
Ted Kaczynski, of course, sentoff 17 bombs between 1978 and
(15:49):
that year of 1995.
Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber.
Anyhow, I covered that and thenanother situation that I covered
and you will appreciate this, Ihope, if you listen to KFBK
radio and you know the othertalk show host, john McGinnis,
who was a long time sheriff inSacramento, who was a friend of
(16:10):
mine, who we have known eachother for a long time.
He helped out, he was part ofthe good guys shooting, you know
, when the sheriffs were calledin for that, the Sacramento
police and the sheriff, and so,anyhow, john does a show in the
afternoons on KFPK, same stationI'm at.
So in 1995, I get sent out, I'mat Talk 650.
(16:41):
Now I think it's Talk 650instead of KSTE.
I think we were Talk 650 KSTman.
I could tell you all thesestories about that radio station
, all the call letters anddifferent changes.
The big station oh, I shouldtalk about that sometime.
But I don't want to distractfrom this story, from this.
But I will talk about that.
(17:04):
In fact let me write that downthere.
I want to talk about that.
So I get called out on one ofthe few stories I ever did as a
reporter and I get called out toLincoln Village and there is a
hostage situation going on somedude named Baggy.
Well, that morning the lateRick stewart good morning,
(17:27):
better rich stewart, big voiceand bob nathan, who I mentioned.
From bob and dave, they werenow the morning show hosts on
kst or kste, along with dianadameron, who is still a friend
of mine.
I don't know that diana wasworking there right at this time
, maybe she was of mine.
I don't know that Diana wasworking there right at this time
, maybe she was off, maybe she Idon't know if she was working
at right at this particular time, but she worked with them.
(17:51):
So I thought we would be kind ofinteresting to go back to the
only, really the only, recordingI have that exists of me that
I'm aware of, anyhow being areporter rather than the
longtime sports guy.
This is before I was the sportsguy.
This is before KSTE.
We were going after the big dog, make no mistake.
(18:11):
We were going after the big dog, which was KFBK, the big
powerhouse that I now work for.
So I was doing everything Icould as a producer to be
creative.
I was trying to produce allthese radio shows for other talk
show hosts and I was doing thestreet and I was kind of like
their ace go-to reporter for avery brief period of time.
(18:35):
And then they merged.
Kste and KFBK became sisterstations.
Why they're sisters, I don'tknow.
Easily could have been brothers, come on, pretty sexist, if you
ask me.
So their studio is right nextto our studio.
It's where Armstrong and Gettydo their morning show.
It's right next to my studio atK-F-B-K.
(18:57):
So here it is.
This is one of the only timesthat and I think, the only
evidence I ever have of me as aon the street reporter with Rick
Stewart, bob Nathan and acouple other voices in here, I
want us to remember as well.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
If you're coming in
on 50, it's a clean sale.
Looks like both 80 and business80 are also going to be right
up to speed and an AOK drive forthe south area for both 99 and
5.
Look for an accident out in theOrangevale area, greenback and
Almond.
Still traffic control there andtraffic fairly congested
Greenback and Almond.
You may want to steer clearWith the most morning traffic
reports.
Traffic every 8 to 10 minutes.
(19:36):
I'm Lauren.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Taylor, toxic 50 KST.
Ah, lauren Taylor, when are you, lauren Taylor, where are you?
Lauren Taylor, marilyn Nelsonand Lauren Taylor really great
traffic reporters back then.
I love the sound of thattraffic.
You know that distant sound.
There's something to be saidabout that.
It's one thing to be.
All right, here's your traffic.
(19:58):
Very stereo, stereo.
But I like that sound ofdistant.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
The activity.
If you're coming in on 50, it'sa clean sail.
Looks like both 80 and business80 are also going to be right
up.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
To speed Makes it
seem like you know if they're
not in the helicopter, makes itseem like they're actually up
there in the helicopter, thatdistant sound.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
Traffic fairly
congested Greenback and Almond.
You may want to steer clearWith the most morning traffic
reports.
Traffic at Greenback and Almond.
You may want to steer clearWith the most morning traffic
reports.
Traffic every 8 to 10 minutes.
I'm Lauren Taylor Talk 650.
Speaker 6 (20:28):
KST.
Thank you very much.
That brings the Talk 650 KSTtime to 8 o'clock.
Takes us to Rick Stewart in theTalk 650 newsroom for the top
stories we're following for youon Talk 650.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
That's Bob Nathan,
right there.
Another live report from Talk650's Pat Walsh.
Listen to his voice, listen toRick In that Lincoln Village
area.
As we know, the story startedgoing down shortly after 6
o'clock this morning and thatwas when the situation was known
at that time as a kidnapsituation.
Apparently, this gentleman hadapparently taken a hostage and
then eventually let the allegedkidnap victim go.
(21:00):
It was a teenager at the timeand now we have made contact
with our Pat walsh on the sceneas we've heard that there have
been some arrests and penta letus know what is going on right
now.
Speaker 8 (21:08):
Well, rick, I guess
this time it's a little bit
better news.
I just went out and I saw thesuspect being put into the car.
Try to get a word.
I is that of course they werereferring to him as baggy.
Baggy is under arrest.
I just saw the folks go thepolice or the sheriff, I should
say go into the house with thecanine unit Just got a report
from one of the sheriffs thatthe rumor we had about the
(21:32):
elderly woman bedridden is nottrue.
She was not in the house, shehad previously moved out just
very recently.
So that's good news.
And also it looks like thateverybody that was in the house
and had barricaded themselves inthe house have now been taken
into custody and this ordeal mayhave come to an end.
Speaker 7 (21:49):
Pat a question about
how many suspects were taken in.
Do you know?
Speaker 8 (21:52):
Rick, I saw two.
I saw what I believe a man'sname, doug, and then Baggy were
the two that I saw come out andsurrender after the tear gas was
fired into the house.
Those are the two that havebeen arrested this morning.
Speaker 7 (22:06):
Well, you've all put
in yeoman's duty this morning,
Pat out there on the scene, andwe're looking forward to seeing
you back at the studio, probablycovered with tear gas fumes,
the way it is.
Speaker 6 (22:15):
And it sounds like a
tip of the cap is due to the
Sacramento County Sheriff'sDepartment as well.
Speaker 8 (22:19):
They have done an
outstanding job under the
circumstances and have been veryforthright with me this morning
.
Speaker 7 (22:25):
All right, thank you
very much.
Thank you, good job there.
Talk 650's Pat Walsh.
On the scene of that incident, which actually started going
down shortly after 6 o'clock, and, as I mentioned, there was a
teenage hostage who identifiedby the name of Cleet, who was
eventually let go, and afterthat it became a standoff
situation.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
We did know that the
suspect Cleet go, and after that
it became a standoff situation.
We did know that the suspectcleat.
By the way, when I went tocover this, I'm out there with
my my microphone and I'mcovering the story and these
people told me I could go intheir backyard to cover because
it was right next to where thehouse was, where this hostage
situation was going on.
So I go in the backyard and I'mat the fence, like at the fence
(23:02):
which is right on the street, and the SWAT guys are just going
right by me like they don'teven see me.
They're going right by me,right in front of my face and on
the other side of the fence, and at one point they said, hey,
because I think they wanted meout of the backyard now, once
they realized I was back therewhich or either that I just I
just got out of there, therejust to be safe, you know and
(23:23):
the couple goes I hate to say it, but I think there may have
been some kind of meth orsomething involved.
I'm sorry, but that's what itfelt at the time and they said
hey, you can go in our bedroomand you can even get in our bed
and look out the window Anyhow.
So I'm in their bedroom ontheir bed looking out the window
watching all this go down intheir bedroom on their bed
(23:46):
looking out the window watchingall this go down.
Speaker 7 (23:47):
Suspect in the house
had, at least in uh was in at
least in control of a 30 30high-powered rifle and had some
other potential weapons in thehome at the same time.
And as we're happy to tell youright now, currently that
situation has come to a closeand the neighbors of that area
in the lincoln village area, just uh uh off bradshaw, south
of highway 50, can get back towhat passes for normal in that
area.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
All right.
So that's part one of that day.
That morning I remember like itwas yesterday beautiful sunny
morning, gorgeous, quite frankly, I was having the time of my
life.
I can remember exactly feelinglike, wow, my career has been
rejuvenated.
I'm out here they're kind ofmaking me the lead guy on these
stories but it was never wheremy heart was and I'm actually
(24:29):
pretty proud of that.
It didn't sound too bad, uh, no, huh, um, but I I guess my
heart wasn't into reportingbecause I knew that it could be
tragic.
Once I saw a fire, then theUnabomber.
You know I wanted to do thingsthat were more kind of what I'm
(24:49):
doing now.
But anyhow, here's part two ofthat.
And I mentioned John McGinnis, who has his own show on KFPK in
the afternoons.
He was the sheriff at one point.
And here we are once again withRick and Bob Nathan, rick
Stewart, bob Nathan.
Rest in peace, rick.
Racing Ricky.
And we continue with theupdates.
Speaker 6 (25:11):
Cloudy day Reno at 45
, trucking.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Lake Tahoe, cold.
I want to mention this guy too,tom Lang.
I think he moved to Arizona, moved to Arizona, arizona moved
to Arizona.
He was a good weather guy.
I liked him on TV and radio.
Tom Lang.
Speaker 6 (25:36):
The 30s.
Overnight lows 18 a truckie toabout 27 a Reno.
Look for some scattered rain orsnow showers across the weekend
.
I'm Tom Lang for Talk 650 KST.
Speaker 7 (25:43):
All right, thank you
very much, tom.
It's currently 47 degreesoutside our studios right now
and, once again, pat Walsh is onthe scene of that situation
that developed this morning, andI understand he has a sheriff's
spokesperson with him.
That would be John McInnes, pat.
Speaker 8 (25:54):
That's right.
Rick John's going to tell uswhat the situation is and clear
that up for us.
Speaker 7 (25:59):
Morning Rick.
Good morning sir.
Go ahead and let us know whatthe whole scene was this morning
.
Speaker 9 (26:04):
The whole thing
started about 325 this morning
when we received a call from awoman.
We told her that her grandsonhad been kidnapped from their
home.
As more information cameforward, we learned that the
suspect who had actually takenfrom that home had also taken
some jewelry from the house bymeans of force.
So we had a robbery and then akidnap.
When the son was our grandsonwas taken.
That 18-year-old victim was anacquaintance of the man who took
(26:27):
him from the home and we hadvery sketchy information.
But some of the information wedid get was that he lived on
Jupiter Drive in the LincolnVillage area and we had a
tentative description of a carthat he drove.
So with that information, officers checked the area of
Jupiter Drive until they found acar that matched that
description.
Officers then surrounded thehouse and when that became
apparent to the suspect, hereleased the 18-year-old victim.
(26:48):
We later learned that there wasa second suspect inside the
house.
The SWAT team went intoposition.
We attempted to establishnegotiations with the critical
process negotiations team.
However, the suspect had notelephone in his residence and
that just didn't work out.
Ultimately, gas grenades werelaunched into the house and the
suspect surrendered.
So we have two suspects incustody, the victim is safe and
(27:11):
no one injured.
Speaker 7 (27:12):
Well, john, from
every indication, we get your
people handled that scene justabsolutely expertly and our
congratulations to you.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
John is doing a
really good job.
You can tell he has anopportunity as a talk show host
Very accurate.
Speaker 9 (27:24):
First of all, finding
a location in the first place
with very limited informationand then managing to take the
suspects into custody safely wasan outstanding task.
Speaker 7 (27:31):
Very good.
Bob Nathan has a comment.
Speaker 6 (27:33):
Yeah, John, this is
not a location that you guys are
unfamiliar with either, thisparticular neighborhood.
Speaker 9 (27:38):
It's not new
territory, bob, that's correct.
Speaker 6 (27:39):
Yeah, did you find
any illegal weapons or drugs
inside the house?
Speaker 9 (27:43):
That search has not
even actually begun yet.
We're going to go through andsee what else we may have
discovered here, but for thetime being we want to make sure
we had everybody safely incustody Exactly, and that has
been accomplished.
Speaker 6 (27:53):
All right, thank you,
john, thank you.
Speaker 7 (27:54):
Bob, that's John
McGinnis, a spokesperson're glad
it has a nice solution to it.
It's 8.15, 15 minutes past 8o'clock.
I'm Rick Stewart, talk 650, KSDNews.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
There you go, 1995
with Rick Stewart, bob Nathan,
john McGinnis.
Rick rest in peace.
Sure, miss that guy, greatfriend man.
He loved music.
I just miss him.
Bob Nathan, wherever you are,my friend, I miss you too.
So many stories I could tellfrom working there at Talk 650.
(28:33):
You know we worked welltogether, I thought, you know,
sometimes just for fun here.
Sometimes, you know you get onthere, you know you get a
co-worker, whatever.
It doesn't work out as well, you know it doesn't work out
quite the way it's supposed towork out.
You never know, maybe there'sanimosity.
(28:54):
Never had any animosity.
Well, let's say there was oneinstance where Bob and I may
have had a little animositytowards Bob.
I'm not going to lie, I likeBob, but there was a couple of
times.
Without getting into it toomuch right now, but some you
(29:17):
know what I'll tell talk 650stories, maybe on my next
podcast.
But sometimes it just, you know, between workers colleagues, it
just it doesn't go the way itshould.
For instance, check this outthis is the anchor and reporter.
This is live on air Fox 5 inNew.
Speaker 10 (29:29):
York.
There's nobody on overtime, there's nobody working on the
weekends.
There's a lot that could bedone to have this done a lot
sooner.
Speaker 3 (29:36):
I'm here every day.
Well, she lives on the firstfloor and so I mean, I don't see
, I care about my otherneighbors.
Well, I mean so.
I mean it's scheduled, it's acontracted job.
We don't tell the elevatorcompany when to work their
people.
They submit a schedule to us.
They said they could do theelevator in six weeks.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
So this is two people
in a hotel in Chicago or,
excuse me, in New York.
So this is two people in ahotel in Chicago or, excuse me,
in New York.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
And they're talking
to this reporter.
So all we're all we're tryingto hold on Good Day, New York to
is is meeting their deadline.
As far as working doingelevator repair six, seven,
eight o'clock at night, I don'tsee that as being a typical
process.
Nor is it a typical process.
I've got to go now.
I want to thank you both.
Speaker 7 (30:24):
Thank you All.
Right, it's back to you, jimOlly don't let her go away.
Speaker 10 (30:28):
Does she have a
response to that?
Is she still there?
What's that?
Did the lady just leave?
Yeah, oh, that's too bad.
We should have kept thatdiscussion.
She's back if you want her liketo know.
I would like to know a responseto what the gentleman said.
The gentleman's a veryeffective spokesperson for the
company, but obviously thepeople who live there are not
(30:49):
satisfied with his explanation,right?
So what do you want now?
Well, if I have to teach youhow to be a reporter, ollie,
I'll do that later.
Speaker 7 (30:56):
Why don't you do that
later, jim?
I think the lady expressedherself and you're not here.
You're there.
Is there any question you'dlike me to ask her?
No, I'll give you lessons onhow to become a reporter.
Speaker 10 (31:10):
I'll give you some
lessons on how to be an editor
because I was your boss once.
Yeah, you were and are nolonger.
How did that happen?
Speaker 1 (31:14):
well, I don't know.
Speaker 10 (31:14):
Here's her.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
And build a millow
all right, here's her, and be
the millow hi peaches are backin season.
Dad god cringy, oh so cringy.
Hi patch peeps 197.
Happy monday to you.
You know I was a sports guy,like I mentioned, for a long,
long time, over two and a halfdecades, and I enjoyed being the
(31:37):
sports guy, never really gotcalled on to do the weather.
Here's the guy.
Who's the sports guy he gotcalled on to do the weather.
Here's the guy who's the sportsguy he got called in.
I guess this is Iowa so hecould do the weather forecast.
But he's the sports guy.
Kwwl, everybody.
Speaker 4 (31:54):
Mark, how are you
feeling?
Speaker 2 (31:55):
out there.
Speaker 4 (31:57):
Again the same way I
felt about eight minutes ago
when you asked me that samequestion.
I normally do sports.
Everything is canceled here forthe next couple of days.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Mark Woodley.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
What better time to
ask the sports guy to come in
about five hours earlier than hewould normally wake up, go
stand out in the wind and thesnow and the cold and tell other
people not to do the same?
I didn't even realize thatthere was a 3.30 also in the
morning Until today.
It's absolutely Fantastic, ryan, you know I'm used to these
(32:29):
evening shows that are only 30minutes long and generally on
those shows I'm Inside, so thisis a really long show.
Tune in for the next couplehours to watch me Progressively
get crankier and crankier.
How do I get that Storm Chaser7 duty?
I feel like Clint got thebetter end of that deal.
(32:49):
You know that thing's heated.
The outdoors currently is notheated.
Well, I'll tell you what, ryan.
I've got good news and I've gotbad news.
The good news is that I canstill feel my face right now.
The bad news is, I kind of wishI couldn't.
Can I go back to my regular job?
I'm pretty sure, ryan, that youguys added an extra hour to
(33:11):
this show just because somebodylikes torturing me, because,
compared to two and a half hoursago, it is just getting colder
and colder.
Live in Waterloo for the lasttime this morning, thankfully.
I'm Mark Woodley, new 7, kwwl.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
Mark Woodley.
Mark, how you feeling out there?
Yeah, you just heard Good stuff, Mark Woodley.
Very, very good.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
So that you know hey
me, bob.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
John Rick got along
well, Appreciate that.
Hey, you know, I pulled thisrecord from my rare 45
collection for pat's peeps, number 197, and this is a as
soon as I saw the label.
Like there's certain labelslike bell records.
It's not going to be this wayevery time, because now that I'm
(33:58):
flashing on this bell, this isin my mind I'm not even looking
at it.
But I just realized, like BellRecords, which is silver, has
the black bell, little drawnbell on there.
I just remembered Tony Orlandoand Dawn is on that too.
Can you imagine?
I just thought of that.
I mean seriously, I swear toyou I don't have that in front
of me, but usually it's thePartridge family.
But as I recall, tony, orlandoand Dawn was on that album.
(34:21):
I can't believe that Rolodexcard just flipped over in my
brain.
But anytime I see Tomla recordsI pretty much know who it's
going to be and I pretty muchknow it's going to be Stevie
Wonder.
So I pulled out a Stevie Wonderrecord.
Now I don't normally tell youright off the bat who the artist
is.
I kind of keep it a little bitof a mystery.
But this is the coolest thing, man.
(34:44):
This record has to be so rare.
Oh, I found a couple of superrare records today.
This one here has to be one ofthem.
So if you've been around awhile or if you know Stevie
Wonder, we remember Songs in theKey of Life, which was a double
album released September 28,1976 on Tomlin.
(35:08):
It was a division of Motown, soit was recorded primarily at
Crystal Sound Studio inHollywood.
There were some sessionsrecorded at the Record Plant in
Hollywood, also in Sausalito.
It was somewhere at the HitFactory in New York, blah, blah,
(35:28):
blah.
Anyhow, the album has beenregarded by music journalists,
some anyhow, as the culminationof Stevie Wonder's classic quote
, classic period of recording.
Now, by 1974, stevie Wonder, oneof the most successful figures
in pop music, his previousalbums Music in my Mind, 72,
(35:53):
talking Book, 72, intervision,73, fulfilling this first finale
in 74, back to back to backcritical successes.
But now, by 75, stevie wasseriously considered.
He seriously considered, if youcan imagine, quitting the music
industry and emigrating toGhana to aid children with
(36:16):
disabilities, planned a farewellconcert He'd already begun, you
know doing that.
And he changed his mind signeda new contract with Motown in
August of 75.
Seven years, seven-album deal, full artistic control.
The deal included $13 millionup front, a potential bonus of
(36:39):
up to $20 million, 20% of theroyalties and the ownership of
the publishing rights.
At that time that was thebiggest recording deal in the
history of music and it went toStevie Wonder.
So Songs in the Key of Lifereleased as a double LP.
Now here's where the littletricky part comes in, because
(37:03):
you go, well, that's a verypopular record.
How can it be so rare?
Well, as I mentioned, it wasreleased as a double LP with a
four-song bonus EP.
A four-song bonus EP.
And boy I love the song I Wish.
On this album, the lead single,I Wish, is so great, followed up
(37:28):
by Sir Duke great song I Wishis more along my liking, but Sir
Duke, I mean huge Reachednumber one on the Billboard Hot
100.
The album spent 13 consecutiveweeks at number one on the
(37:49):
Billboard 200.
Became the album with the mostweeks at number one during the
year, the second best-sellingalbum of 77, which had to be
what was number one Off the topof my head?
It had to be Rumors byFleetwood Mac, wasn't it?
It had to be.
What was number one Off the topof my head?
It had to be Rumors byFleetwood Mac, wasn't it?
It had to be.
But Songs in the Key of Lifewon Album of the Year at the
(38:10):
19th Grammy Awards.
Blah, blah, blah, criticallyacclaimed.
We know the great songs off it,isn't she lovely?
I mean all these great tunesthat's on there, isn't it, isn't
it, sir Duke?
So yeah, it did incredible.
(38:32):
It surpassed all commercialexpectations, debuted number one
, like I say, on the BillboardPop Albums chart, october 76.
Only the third album in historyto achieve that feat, after
Elton John's albums CaptainFantastic and the Brown Dirt
Cowboy and Rock of the Westies, both from 75.
(38:53):
First American artist in Canadathat achieved the same feat
entering the RPM National Albumschart at number one.
You could just go on and on.
I mean this.
Songs in the Key of Life blockedfour other albums from reaching
the top Boss Gags, silk Degreeswhat a great record.
(39:17):
Earth, wind, fire, spirit.
Led Zeppelin's soundtrack thesong Remains the Same and Rod
Stewart's A Night on the Town.
Just amazing.
January 15th, 77,.
The album finally dropped tonumber two.
Okay, behind Eagles, hotelCalifornia, all right.
Well, wasn't Rumors right inthat time?
(39:40):
So Hotel California beat outthe Stevie Wonder songs in the
Keys of Life Fell in number fourthe following week, and then on
and on.
All right, so let me fastforward.
Well, why, pardon me, why wouldthis be?
Yeah, isn't she lovely?
It wasn't even released as asingle, but it received huge
(40:06):
radio play, became one of hismost popular songs.
But for my purposes here today, there was this other little bit
.
The original LP editionsincluded a bonus 7-inch EP
(40:28):
titled A Something's Extra,containing four bonus tracks.
The songs were later includedas bonus tracks on a CD and
streaming versions on the album.
But so what?
Tracks on a CD and streamingversions on the album?
But so what?
These are the real.
This is the real record righthere.
I don't know how many of theseexist.
(40:52):
So, on two sides of a 45, aseven-inch record, there are two
songs on each side Saturn andEbony Eyes, which I'm wondering.
It can't be the same Ebony Eyesas Bob Welch, or it can't be,
we'll find out.
The other side, all Day Suckerand Easy Goin' Evening.
Four songs on a 45, on a 7-inch.
(41:12):
Let's take a listen.
Saturn, guitar solo.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
Ragging my pants on
the way To a place where the air
is clean, wragging my bags onthe way To a place where the air
is clean, and sadly, there's nosense to sit and watch people
die.
We don't fight our wars the wayyou do.
(42:03):
We put back all the things weused on Saturn.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
There's no sense to
keep on doing such crimes.
Wow, never heard it.
Speaker 1 (42:21):
There's no principles
in what you say.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
All right, there's a
song that's Saturn.
That's the first song let's seehere Saturn, okay, followed by
Ebony Eyes.
This is side one.
It can't be Bob Welch EbonyEyes.
Remember that song by Bob Welchfrom Fleetwood Mac?
Let's see what Stevie WonderWelch Ebony Eyes.
Remember that song by Bob Welchfrom Fleetwood Mac?
Let's see what Stevie Wonderdoes Ebony Eyes she's a miss
(42:50):
beautiful wow, way different.
That almost sounds like theBeatles a girl that others wish
that they could be.
Speaker 1 (43:01):
If there's seven
wonders of the world, then I
know she's got to be number one.
She's a girl that can't be beat, born and raised on Ghetto
Street.
She's a devastating beauty, apretty girl with ebony eyes.
(43:25):
Oh wow, she's the sunflowerfrom nature's seed, a girl that
some men only find in their boy.
Speaker 2 (43:36):
That reminds me of
something else.
What is it?
Speaker 1 (43:39):
Wow, wow.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
By the way, I don't
know, that's different.
I don't know the rights to this, just educating and blah, blah,
blah.
All right, let's see what's onthe other side.
Well, that was a trip, let's go.
Here is the B-side, the sidetwo.
Excuse me, stevie Wonder, theEP, the this Is Rare All Day,
(44:46):
sucker.
Oh hey, now, come on, come on.
Speaker 1 (45:01):
Man spunkies, you
can't slug it.
Come on up, you say, cause youcan feel your love coming down.
I find myself rushing over Todo something for your love.
(45:21):
My knock on my door, you answer, asking what am I there for?
I say I thought you wanted meto Do something for your love.
Speaker 2 (45:39):
Man.
He was in such a creative flowthis year During this.
To get something but to getnone of it All right, let's
(46:05):
check out the final one on thisfour-song EP 7-inch record.
This one is Easy Going Evening.
Here we go now.
That's Peeps 197.
Thank you for listening.
Happy Monday, by the way,Harmonica you know, you know, as
(46:51):
I listen to this and I listento the other songs, they're not
bad.
I particularly like.
I think maybe Ebony Eyes onhere are the best.
But when you hear a record likethis or Coda by Led Zeppelin
and there's others, and you hearthings maybe where you know the
(47:15):
songs were afterthoughts and inthis case an EP, in this case
the Something Extra EP, thesebonus tracks, they were again
later included in the CD set.
With all due respect, you canalways tell that, yeah, I get it
(47:37):
.
Why they didn't make the cut, let's say Didn't make the cut
Wasn't up to snuff, exactlyBecause this is a great record,
this album.
But I can see why certain songswere not included on the actual
album.
But thank you so much forlistening.
Pat's Peeps 197.
See you for 198.
Thanks for joining our Pat'sPeeps group to the Italian
(47:57):
Riviera.
Now it's off to Sicily.
See you on the radio.
