Speaker 1 (00:15):
welcome.
Welcome to the pats peepspodcast, which is pretty much my
daily podcast.
I try my best anyhow to do itdaily.
Doesn't always work out thatway, but here we are once again
with the 245th.
It feels like a milestone.
It's not, but it seems like itfor some reason.
(00:35):
245th episode of the Pat'sPeeps podcast.
Can you call it an episode?
I guess it's an episode.
Thank you to Sean Moody for ourtheme song.
By the way, sean Moody has anew song out that he just shared
with me today.
The gentleman who does ouropening theme there, as I've
(00:55):
told you many times, just does afantastic job with the opening
theme and he's a great musician.
So I'm going to check that out.
Maybe we'll be able to presentthat to you in future episodes,
maybe on Monday.
I just want to double checkwith him, but today, as I take a
look out my studio windows intothe beautiful foothills of
(01:16):
Northern California, it is abeautiful sunny day, a little
breeze out there, and it's thekind of day where I was inspired
to get out there and start someyard work, and so I did just
that.
What about you, anyone outthere starting the yard work as
soon as the sun comes out.
I love the sound of the mowers, like the neighbors, I could hear
them mowing and weed eating andall that.
(01:37):
I know a lot of people dealwith the allergies.
I hate weed eating, thoughthat's one thing I delegate.
I just can't.
I can't stand weed eating.
And when I was in Italy forwhat?
10 days, 11 days I come back.
I mean this stuff went from.
Okay, I can see some weedspopping up here and there, boom
(01:58):
it.
Just you come back.
It's just like this.
It's just unbelievable how fastthey grow Grows like a weed.
So anyhow, you have to dealwith that.
But it's just a gorgeous dayand it's expected to be nice for
a few days, like into the 70s,80s.
So I'm very excited about that.
Got outside and started pullingweeds.
(02:19):
I need to delegate.
You know I'm to the point.
I'm not lazy or nothing, but Ijust have.
You know, the business, thePats Peeps business, is starting
to pick up and I need to have alittle more free time, so I may
have to start delegating someof this stuff Once I get all the
hard part done.
I need someone to maintain it,but I'm not, you know.
(02:40):
But I do enjoy going out thereand doing that kind of stuff
anyhow Well, but I do enjoygoing out there and doing that
kind of stuff Anyhow well.
You must be getting old whenyou talk about you enjoy doing
yard work.
I don't know, it's a littledifferent, I don't really.
Whatever, I'm not going todwell on that.
I did have fun yesterday, by theway, going out to William Land
(03:01):
Park for yesterday's Pat's Peeps244.
It was really really nice toget out there and I don't know,
there's just something, as Imentioned yesterday, very
peaceful about visiting thatbeautiful park and so I got a
lot of response on that too, alot of people with great
memories of going out there andmemories very similar to mine.
(03:25):
So again, thank you forlistening to the podcast.
It was, you know, anything Ican do to relax like that.
I just find it a place where Ican relax.
You know, I always tell you youcan find my podcast.
By the way, I am Pat Walsh.
I'm the host of the Pat WalshRadio Show as well, or we just
(03:48):

I'm going try.
I tried this before.
(04:08):
I tried it before.
I'll try to hear it again, cause if you had that, alexa,
oops, you know, I said it, youknow you say the word, you say
your name.
I never had one of those untilrecently.
It's kind of weird.
It's kind of you know, it'srecently.
It's kind of weird.
It's convenient, but it's kindof weird.
(04:28):
You might talk about something.
No, I'm whispering over here.
What are you whispering?
Anyhow, you say its name andsuddenly it gives you
information, again, convenient, but kind of weird.
I feel like it's eavesdropping.
But I tried this before and itpromoted someone else's podcast.
(04:49):
Let me see if I can do it,because I always say just say it
to her and to play my podcast,it should pop up.
I did try this, I'll be honestwith you, before I came on today
and it did work On the secondtake.
So I'll say it very clearly.
So if you would like to listento my Pat's Peeps podcast on
(05:11):
that device, you would say herewe go.
You'd say, alexa, play Pat'sPeeps podcast, let's see what
happens.
Play Pat's Peeps podcast onwhat happens.
Hey.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Hey, hey.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Oh, that's when I
went to the laundromat and I had
no tooth, no front tooth.
See, there you go, alexa, stop, thank you.
So it works, it worked.
It picked out a random episode186.
(06:03):
I remember that day very well, the laundromat episode.
It picked out a random episode186.
I remember that day very well, the laundromat episode.
That was the first of the twolaundromat episodes we've now
done One from Colfax.
Isn't that exciting.
I ask you, my friends, seriously, do I hold the niche for
laundromat podcasts?
What is the record number forlaundromat podcasts?
(06:24):
I'm going to go with with two.
Maybe I'm wrong, you know, maybe that's not a bad idea.
Actually, maybe someone has atable set up somewhere at a
laundromat where they justpodcast every day with the sound
of the machines going.
I don't know, but we did onethere and then one in Florence
at the.
(06:44):
What was it called the laundry?
Uh well, what the heck was?
It was in Florence, whatever.
It was fun.
So, yeah, you can just say itinto that device, which I'm not
going to say it again right nowbecause, uh, heck, it'll go off
on a whole tangent again.
(07:05):
By the way, let's see, we havesome listener stuff to get to,

in the mood, if you're anythinglike me, for a pizza right
Making the pizza.

(09:31):
making the pizza.
So stop on down to one of threegreat locations, or call us up
to let our crews hook you up.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Yeah, the NFL draft
is coming up next week.
Might want to grab some pizzafor that NFL draft.
Anyone follow the NFL draft?
Do you have to be a hardcorefootball guy to or not guy,
necessarily person, because Iknow there's a lot of women that
do as well.
But do you follow the NFL?
Do you have to be hardcore?
(09:58):
What level of fan do you haveto be to follow the draft?
And there's always a lot ofhype around the draft For some
reason.
In the NFL there's some inbaseball as well and hockey and
things, but for some reason theNFL draft seems to be the the
the thing.
(10:18):
If you're, if you're watchingdrafts, you know, because of Mel
Kiper he gets a lot of creditand he still has that helmet
here.
I see it's receding, but MelKiper still has that helmet here
, but he kind of he gets thecredit for starting the hype
around the NFL draft.
He gets the credit for startingthe hype around the NFL draft,
I would say anyhow.
And so that's coming up.
(10:39):
When is it?
Is that next Thursday?
I believe yes, it'll be April24th.
Is that next Thursday?
I think it's 24th, and that'llbe at 5 pm Pacific time, 8 pm
Eastern time.
They're going to be in GreenBay.
Round one is April 24th, thenthe second and third round April
(11:00):
25th, beginning at 4pm our timeI say our time Pacific, 7pm
Eastern.
Then the fourth through seventhround goes on the 26th.
If you are in Californiathinking about any California
teams, you know I almost bid onthat.
I almost said the Raiders, isn't that strange?
(11:20):
You can't say the Raiders arein California.
I automatically went to theRaiders.
Of course, the Niners, you knowthe Santa Clara Niners.
Sorry, niner fans, but that'swhere they are Anyhow.
The 49ers, the San Francisco49ers, they're there at pick 11.
I almost want to gloss over theRaiders.
(11:41):
They moved out.
Why should we care?
I mean, I know there's a lot ofRaider fans though still here.
I feel bad for the Raider fans.
They are the now Las VegasRaiders picking at six.
They should still be in Oakland.
The A's should still be in.
Well, that's a whole thing.
They're in Sacramento, which Ilike.
(12:03):
That, hey, you know what teamis in.
There's a couple of other teamsin Los Angeles.
One of them happens to be myteam.
They are picking at number 26this year.
Of course, as you know, theteams at the very end of the
draft are the teams thatfinished best during the season.
The teams at the beginning ofthe draft are the teams that had
(12:26):
the worst records, unless therewere trades or some other
circumstances surrounding this.
And then the Chargers.
Let's see where then thechargers.
Let's see where the chargerswhere.
Let's see.
They were sort of, uh, themiddle of the pack.
22 is where the la formerly sandiego chargers are picking it.
(12:48):
You know, I remember when theminnesota vikings anyone
remember when they missed theytook too long and missed their
pick I mean I couldn't believethat.
Ah, we're going to pass.
Well, okay, we can't make upour mind.
No Time ran out.
Come on Minnesota.
And the Jets man, the Jets, theJets.
(13:12):
No matter who they draft thefans, but they've had some
blunders over the years.
Speaker 6 (13:19):
Johnny Lamb Jones.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
I think it's a good
selection, but a very surprising
one UCLA running back FreemanMcNeil.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
As a season ticket
holder of the Jets, I'm going to
boo.
Speaker 7 (13:35):
Jets take the first
round selection Quarterback Ken
O'Brien of.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
California Davis,
right out of Davis Wow.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
He said if Marino was
going to be around at that time
, they'd take Marino.
Obviously the Jets knowsomething that you know.
The people up here don't I meanthink about that.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
Think about that pick
right there.
Everybody said if Marino wasgoing to be around.
Speaker 5 (13:59):
Let's hear that again
.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Quarterback.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
Ken O'Brien.
Ken O'Brien, okay, ken O'Brienwas a great quarterback at Davis
.
Ken O'Brien to the Jets, california Davis UC.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
Davis, everybody said
if Marino was going to be
around at that time, they'd takeMarino.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
And they pass on Dan
Marino.
Now, did Dan Marino ever winthe Super Bowl?
No, went to a Super Bowl, didn't win.
But if you were around, so whatwas that like?
1983, I believe.
I mean, come on, that dude wasone.
Marino is one of the greatquarterbacks of all time.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Obviously the Jets
know something that you know.
The people up here don't.
No, they don't.
New York Jets first roundselection Fullback.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
Roger Vick, texas,
a&l.
Speaker 7 (14:50):
New York Jets first
round choice Jeff Lagerman,
linebacker Virginia.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
Just auto, it's just
automatic Boom.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
It's obvious to me
right now that the Jets just
don't understand what thedraft's all about.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Mel Kuyper.
The New York Jets select BlairThomas running back Penn.
Speaker 6 (15:22):
State.
The New York Jets select JohnnyMitchell.
Tight end Nebraska.
It just cracked me up.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
So New York, new York
becomes tight end, tight end.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
We want Seth baby, we
want Seth.
We want Seth.
Speaker 6 (15:47):
The New York Jets
select tight end from Penn State
, kyle, brady.
Ladies and gentlemen, our firstreal upset, I I think at this
point in the draft I alsoremember when mel kuiper was
telling uh, oh god, who was itthe?
Speaker 1 (16:07):
uh, the, who was the
colts gm or whatever back then?
And he and there was a wholedispute like 1994.
Was it Jim Irsay?
No, bill Tobin, bill Tobin andMel Kuyper If you remember that
(16:31):
feud that really hyped the draft.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
There's no question
about that.
But you got a problem with thismove.
I think it's a typical Coltmove.
I mean, here's a team thatneeded a franchise quarterback.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
So this is Kuyper
with his helmet hair.
I'll start it over for you.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
There's no question
about that.
But you got a problem with thismove.
I think it's a typical Coltmove.
I mean, here's a team thatneeded a franchise quarterback.
There were two out there.
They have a chance at two.
They don't take them.
They end up coming back intothe picture to get Trent Dilfer.
They take an outside linebackerNot even a true outside
linebacker.
Somebody has to learn coverage.
In Trev Alberts they haveCorriott, they have Haraj.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
Yeah, Trev Alberts.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
The hole that
developed with the release of
Dwayne Bickett up a Trent Dilfer, when all you have is Jim
Harbaugh.
Give me a break.
That's why the Colts arepicking second every year in the
draft, not battling for theSuper Bowl like other clubs in
the national football league.
All I want to know is Mel Kiper.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
My neighbor has more
credentials than Mel Kiper.
Speaker 7 (17:26):
And my neighbor's a
postman.
What do you want to cover first, our players or that jerk?
Speaker 6 (17:30):
in Baltimore.
Speaker 7 (17:36):
Well, let me tell you
a little bit.
I mean the people in this room.
Mel Kiper.
Speaker 6 (17:39):
I kind of went to one
channel.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
And I found all this
out about the last year.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
Anyhow, that was a
good rivalry right there.
Anyhow, by the way, ralphlistener content sends this
along this portion of the PatWall Show.
You know I talked about Alexis.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
What was Alexa?
Speaker 1 (18:03):
earlier.
I don't want to say it too loudbecause it'll fire up again.
I'm so glad we didn't haveAlexis.
We had to clap to turn ourlights on back then.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
Clap off, Clap, then
Clap off, clap on.
Clap off the clapper.
Speaker 7 (18:20):
Let you turn things
on or off from anywhere in the
room.
Turn it on.
Just plug in the clapper andthe television, lamp, stereo,
almost anything you want to clapon and off.
Speaker 6 (18:31):
Clap on, clap off,
clap on, clap off the clapper.
Clap on, clap off.
Clap on, clap off the clapper.

Speaker 5 (24:13):
I can remember
planning, building my whole
world around you, and I canremember hoping that you and I
could make it on through um whatwas the next line?
Um, oh god, I forgot it.
Ah, anyways, there's your discosong, because I know that you
(24:35):
hate fucking disco, but I'm hereto tell you there's some
nutritional value in that shit.
Well, some of it is, and I toldDolores.
Speaker 1 (24:46):
I said, you know, I
don't know, I love that song.
I don't you know, but I don'tknow that I didn't really
consider it disco-y.
Really.
Maybe it is now.
I gotta the love.
I love.
Harold Melvin of the Blue Notes.
Pat's Peeps 245.
Happy Friday.
So it's Harold Melvin of theBlue Notes.
(25:09):
I remember this song so well.
Oh, this is like the longversion of it.
I see.
You know what we should do.
We should listen to DonCornelius on Soul Train
introduce how about?
Speaker 6 (25:23):
it gang for Harold
Melvin and the Mighty Blue Notes
.
What up boys?
Speaker 1 (26:05):
It does have a bit of
a disco beat, more than I
remember, like the early discosound.
Yeah, um, you know, yeah, that's that disco beat for sure,
for sure it sounded more, Ithink.
Initially to me it sounded morelike maybe Soul or Motown, not
(26:27):
Motown, but it does have thatdisco back beat.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
I can remember
planning, building my whole
world around you.
I can remember hoping that youand I could make it all through.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
But something went
wrong.
I used to love watching SoulTrain and American Bandstand.
I remember watching that on theweekends back to back.
Remember they do that danceline.
They'd have to dance.
I always liked those guys.
I can't remember who they were,those guys.
There was like four or five ofthem and they wore the white
(27:16):
gloves and they'd do the robotDang it.
I give it away, my ageUnbelievable.
Those were good days, good days.
Speaking of good days, I pulledthis 45 off my super rare
record collection shelf up there.
(27:36):
I see that it's got a stampfrom the radio station.
There's two of them in thissleeve.
This is on Scepter Records,january 9th 1973.
I know I didn't talk aboutanything important on today's
podcast.
I don't know if I ever talkabout anything important on my
podcast.
I didn't want to talk aboutanything important on my podcast
(27:59):
today.
I hope you don't mind.
It's such a nice day.
I've been in a relaxed moodsince Italy.
I don't want to get, you know, keyed up over politics or
anything like that.
So this is, yeah, scepterRecords.
Two of these records in here.
Let me pull these apart here.
(28:21):
One side is well, well, it saysnew version, okay, beautiful
condition, mono.
One side, stereo on the otherand then on the other record,
and no stickers on this one, butit does have the stamp january
9th 1973.
And then the other record, sameone, uh, come well.
Uh, same song.
Uh, it's a mono on this side.
(28:42):
And then this side is stereo, not for sale, promotional copy.
So I'll put these back in thesleeves for a moment as I tell
you about it.
This goes back to let's see, written by CE Quick.
(29:06):
It's an original member, bassvocalist of the American doo-wop
vocal group, this Group.
This was originally recorded bythe group, by the lead singer,
norman Wright, in 56, but it wasnot released until 1957.
On the Lunaverse LP come well, let's see, I'm not going to give
(29:28):
it away.
The final version was releasedin the second week of January of
57.
It was led by Norman Wright, although some sources claim that
it was led by Gus Backus.
Joe Averbach, the owner ofPhoebe Records, could not handle
the demand, so he signs withDot Records in late February of
57.
(29:48):
Song became a hit, went tonumber five on the US Billboard
Top 100 on the pop chart.
Yeah, number five, predecessorof the 1958 established
Billboard Hot 100.
So okay, so it's a little bitdifferent.
I was wondering about that.
(30:09):
I also went to number two onthe R&B chart.
This song and another eightsongs were then recorded in the
basement of Pittsburgh discjockey Barry Kay's home.
The recordings were released in1992 as 1956 audition tapes,
(30:30):
and I just think that's reallyinteresting.
You know the song was laterfeatured in several films, such
as American Graffiti, diner, stand by Me, so some really good
movies that this thing has beenin.
The Beach Boys did a version, let's see.
(30:51):
So I'll just put it on theturntable here.
This is let's see.
Let's see here.
I'm not getting my turntable togo here.
Bear with me, bear with me.
(31:12):
This is the first time I'vebeen able to get it done.
All right, let me see if I hitthe right button here.
All right, here we go.
Sorry, I don't know whathappened.
Oh, it was unplugged.
I see what happened.
All right, oh, we pluggedsomething in.
Okay, there we go.
Dum-de-do-de-dum,dum-dum-dum-dum,
(31:33):
dum-de-do-de-dum,dum-dum-dum-dum.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
Baby, come, whoa,
whoa, whoa, whoa.
Well, love, love you, darling,Come and go with me.
(32:04):
Come with me, baby on the sea.
I need you, darling, so come,go with me.
Come, come, come, come into myheart.
Oh, darling, we would neverpart.
I need you, darling, so come gowith me.
(32:26):
Yes, I need you.
Yes, I do need you.
Please, I say never leave me.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
You know this is
interesting.
It was throwing me for a loop,I have to admit, as I'm looking
at the record itself.
It's interesting.
So I'm looking at the recordsand I'm thinking what am I
missing here?
So, as I was flipping therecords over, I noticed so
(33:00):
there's stereo, there's mono andthen there's the same song, but
new version.
So that's the deal, because theoriginal was on Phoebe and that
was confusing me.
So on Scepter, on this side.
So this side is the new version.
(33:20):
Okay, that's really interestingto me.
So let's take a listen to thenew version.
Wow, you've got to be kiddingme.
(33:53):
Okay, that is just.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Wow, is that
different.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
You know the days
were 57, 58 and that, and this
record's distinctly on this sidesince 73.
That was confusing.
Now I got it.
So the new version I need youdarling, come and go with me.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Wow, wow, wow, wow,
yes, I need you, yes, I really
need you.
Please say you never leave me.
Well, well, well, say you never, yes, you really never.
You never give me up.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
Yeah, I really regret
that I threw Andrew Dice Clay
into the mix today.
That guy's as disgusting as Ialways thought he was.
Initially he was kind of funnymaybe, but then whatever.
Sorry, if you like, andrew DiceClay, just eh.
Thank you for listening.
(35:01):
Happy Friday and, by the way,it's Easter weekend.
