Have you ever stopped to consider the quiet power of Wednesday? That overlooked middle child of the week actually carries more historical significance, pop culture references, and practical advantages than you might realize.

Join me on this nostalgia-filled journey as I smoke a cigar and reminisce about the golden age of weekend television. Remember ABC's Wide World of Sports with that iconic introduction? "The thrill of victory... and the agony of defeat." I can still picture those Saturday afternoons with my dad, him nursing a Falstaff beer and Lucky Strike, while we watched in awe as Evel Knievel attempted his death-defying stunts. For a moment in the 1970s, that jumpsuit-wearing daredevil was even cooler than Superman! His slow-motion crash at Caesars Palace might just be the most captivating sports footage ever captured.

But this episode is really a celebration of Wednesday itself. Did you know it was named after Woden, the most important god in the Germanic pantheon? Or that in many Slavic languages, the word for Wednesday literally translates to "middle"? Perhaps most useful of all - research shows bosses are most receptive to requests (like raises or time off) on Wednesdays! We also explore Wednesday's appearances throughout pop culture, from Simon and Garfunkel's "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." to the delightfully macabre Wednesday Addams who stole our hearts.

Before you plan your next weekend, take a moment to appreciate this unsung hero of the workweek. Visit patspeeps.com to check out our expanding mall, with food businesses and special coupons coming soon. And next Wednesday, when you hit that midweek point, remember - you're not just on your way to the weekend; you're experiencing a day with its own rich history and significance.

overcast and yet it is hot, andthen the sun's out.
Sun's out now, but we get someclouds rolling in and suddenly
it's overcast.

Funny, I'm sitting here today aswe get ready to do the Pat's
Peeps.
I'm smoking a cigar man.
I have cut back on cigars.
I have really cut back.
I always do this.
I think, oh, how cool I canhave a cigar and do my podcast.
It's very difficult to do acigar and podcast at the same
time, just like it is to eat anddo a podcast or a radio show.

(02:06):
By the way, I'm the host of thepat wall show on kfpk radio
sacramento 93.1 fm.
15.

the radio show.
So thank you to everyone who'slistening.
And you know what?
If you're listening to me rightnow, I just really want you to

(02:30):
know how much I appreciate it.
Okay, as I'm getting ready to dothis, I have my TV on.
I've got to keep my cigar going.
I watch so many things thatremind me of my childhood.
All of a a sudden, as I'mwatching, I mean it's just
youtube and uh, and you know, random things will pop up and

(02:51):
you kind of go down that rabbithole for a minute.
I don't have a lot of free time, but I watch videos and I'm
looking for things that that areinteresting.
You know that I want to talkabout on the show, on the
podcast, here, and so in doingso, random things will pop up
and today, uh, something poppedup.
I'm trying to pull it up rightnow.
I'm buying myself time, uh, butI remember this so well when I

(03:17):
was a kid like it'd be asaturday afternoon we've talked
about this before where maybethere wasn't much on TV, like
your choices were limited.
Mutual of Omaha's Wild KingdomSee Jim as he's up in the tree
fighting the python.
I'll be down here with myinsurance.
We've talked about Morris, taylor and Chico.
But how about this?
If you're of a certain age, you've got to remember this.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety
of sport that's right, thethrill of victory yes

Speaker 1 (03:54):
and the agony of defeat, with the skier biffing
it over the off the ski rampthere the the guy jumping the
barrels.
Athletic competition.
This ice skates, olga Corbett.
I'd be sitting there watchingthat, yes.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba Sears.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba, uh-huh, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
And by Rolaid For acid indigestion, Rolaid.
Rolaid spells relief.
Jim McKay 27 times its weightin excess stomach acid.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
That's Jim McKay.
Remember he became popularduring that Israeli hostage
crisis at the 72 Olympics.
He covered that.
He became very popular afterthat.
But I remember sitting, youknow you'd be in the living room
on the weekend.
My dad would be sitting theredrinking like a Falstaff,

(04:54):
smoking a Lucky Strike, something like that, watching a
wide world of sports.
And so that popped up on my TV.
I'm like wow, and it was a busjump from Evel Knievel in 1975.
You know, I got to thinkingabout that.
There was no one more popularat the time than Evel Knievel.
He even had like one of those, you know, elvis hey man, I got

(05:16):
my the jumpsuit right.
That dude looks so cool Like helooked cooler than Superman.
He was more cool than Supermanfor a while, more popular.
I'm sorry Superman fans, but Iremember a period of time in the
70s, evel Knievel, superpopular man.
People could not wait to watchwhat he was going to do.

(05:38):
I'm sure that ABC's Wide Worldof Sports signed him to a
lucrative contract.
I mean, think about it.
They had to like hey, man, ifyou're going to do this, do it
live on our show and that way,you know, you make a lot of
money.
It was the biggest show on airreally at the time, especially
on the weekends, and so you'dwatch it.
And I would still contend thatthat slow-mo video when he tried

(06:02):
to jump the fountain at Caesarsin Vegas if that's not the top
sports film of all time, I don'tknow what is Definitely I'd put
that at the top In terms ofmost intriguing and fascinating.
I'd put that at the top Interms of most intriguing and
fascinating.
I'll put that at the top.
Now I might be forgetting aboutsome, but certainly if I even
thought of some more which Icould, Intriguing-wise, I'm not

(06:24):
saying the greatest moments ofall time, I'm just saying the
ones you look at and you go wow, wow, that was pretty incredible
and unusual for sure.
And he's flopping aroundbreaking every bone in his body,
evel Knievel.
Then he tried to jump the SnakeRiver Canyon.
You remember that in the 80s,like the early to mid 80s, and
he did it like that rocket kindof motorcycle thing and I

(06:47):
thought, you know, as they say, jump the shark.
If there was anything any timewhere Evel Knievel, as they say,
jumped the shark, went a littletoo far, became a little
ridiculous.
You know if I might say it wasthat in my opinion and that was
way before jumping the shark wasa thing Before.

(07:09):
Fonzie actually jumped theshark in Happy Days for those of
you who know but it wasn'treally.
It didn't seem like amotorcycle, he didn't make it
Basically, he was in this rocketthing and it just pooped out
there halfway over the canyonand floated down with a
parachute.
Everyone, people couldn't waitfor that.
For Evel Knievel to try to jumpthe Snake River Canyon

(07:36):
Absolutely amazing man.
But Evel Knievel, I, to jumpthe Snake River Canyon
Absolutely amazing man.
But Evil Knievel I mean, yeah, that just again.
That just takes me back to atime as a kid.
That guy was brave man.
Anyhow, happy Wednesday to you.

love, as she lies here beside me, asleep with the night.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
And her hair in the air I'm pretty sure Maybe it's
me, and I certainly could bewrong Reflecting the glow of the
moon.
I've been wrong a lot of times.
I'll admit that I don't thinkthis song says anything about
Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (09:28):

She is soft, she is warm, butmy heart remains heavy.
