You know I'm sitting here in mystudio today looking out the
windows into the beautifulfoothills of Northern California
, and it's a warm day.
I'm not going to go as far asto say it's really hot, but it's
a warm day and I'm finishingoff my porch.
By the way, I just want to saythis start with this Finishing
(01:20):
off my porch and I'm puttingthis sealant on there.
It's this kind of sealant.
I take pride in my front porch,my deck in the back and I'm
using this wet finish sealant onit right now and it has this
and my porch has this just ahint of mocha color in it, so
(01:40):
it's just a maybe a light brown,I guess.
And when I spray this ceilingon here, this on the under, this
wet look, oh my god, it looksso good.
This is my second coating onthere, by the way, so it's been
a process.
I've been doing it this week, but it's not a big deal.
It just has to be the righttime.
You can't do it on a reallysuper hot day and the sun's
(02:02):
hitting the porch, but I'm justsaying, wow, the porch looks
spectacular.
I keep standing out therelooking at it.
So, wherever you are, whateveryou are doing on this fine
Tuesday, I'm in such a good mood.
Every day this week is going toseem like a Friday.
I'm going to tell you whyBecause I'm going to take a week
(02:22):
off next week.
I'm going to take a week offnext week.
You know I'm going to take aweek off of radio.
Now I only get to do that, really, when I'm traveling,
maybe to Italy.
We're going to go to Sicily, asI've been mentioning this fall.
We're going to Sicily.
By the way, you can still gowith us on my trip, the Pat's
Peeps Tour with ConservativeTours If you want to go check it
out at conservativetourscom andlook for my trip.
(02:45):
However, I don't get a chanceto just kind of take time off
during the rest of the year, andso I'm going to do that next
week.
But here's the thing I'm goingto take it off for my radio show
, but whatever I'm doing, nextweek I am going to be doing my
podcast.
So, thank you.
Thank you so much, appreciatethat.
I hope you'll follow along.
(03:09):
So, um, that's why I'm in sucha good mood.
But here on pat's peeps 318, youknow, I want to talk for a
second, if I can, about thisgentleman who passed away
yesterday.
I talked about it on my showlast night.
I kind of wanted to get alittle bit more in depth onto
this gentleman's past.
To this gentleman, 88 years old.
His name is Ronnie Rondell Jr.
(03:32):
If you heard my show last night, by the way, monday through
Friday, 7 to 10 pm on KFBK inSacramento.
But I talked about him.
But he was a stunt performerand what you think.
Well, a stunt performer.
Okay, that's pretty awesome man.
I'm not sure, if I know stuntperformers, if you are a rocker
(03:53):
and, as I pointed out on my showlast night, if you're a fan of
Pink Floyd, which I am a hugefan of Pink Floyd.
My favorite rock album and it'shard to pick, but Dark Side of
the Moon I'm always going tostick with.
That is my favorite rock album.
We'll have to talk about thaton my show.
That is such a softballquestion, but it's fun.
(04:14):
What I mean by softball?
Just a really easy, super easyquestion and everyone has an
opinion on it.
Some people think, oh, that'sthe kind of topic you go to when
you have nothing else to talkabout.
Listen, I got a million thingswe could talk about, from very
serious to silly.
But guess what?
People occasionally like asoftball question.
(04:36):
You don't have to think aboutit.
It's like well, I know it'smore instinct, anyhow, going off
on a tangent.
But Ronnie Rondell Jr, a stuntperformer here's what he was
best known for.
He was best known for being theman who was set ablaze on the
1975 Pink Floyd album.
(04:58):
Wish you Were here.
You've seen the album.
He's on fire.
It's like two businessmen.
They're shaking hands.
They're at Warner BrothersStudio in the parking lot in
Burbank on a sunny day.
They're shaking hands.
One of the men is on fire.
It's Ronnie Rondell Jr.
(05:19):
That's how I know him and again, if you're a rocker, into Floyd
, or even if you're not intoFloyd, if you're a rocker and
you're familiar with Pink FloydI know you've seen it and
everyone knows this album.
Wish you were here.
Welcome to the Machine.
Have a Cigar Shine On you, crazy Diamond.
The title track, of course.
(05:40):
Incredible record from 1975.
Ronnie died at an assistedliving facility in Assange Beach
, missouri.
He was born in 1937, graduatedfrom North Hollywood High School
(06:06):
, enlisted in the United StatesNavy, most notably in 1975, he
appears engulfed, as I said, inflames on the cover alongside
yet another stunt performer, onthe cover, alongside yet another
(06:27):
stunt performer.
The photo was to give theinterpretation of one music
business executive gettingburned by another executive in a
business dealing.
Isn't that awesome, pink Floydman, so intelligent Even in
their 20s, just so intelligent.
This photo shoot was done atthe Warner Brothers lot, like I
(06:50):
said, in Burbank.
15 pictures were taken, totaland despite wearing fire
retardant underneath hisbusiness suit, on the final
photo Rondell's mustache wasdisintegrated.
His face was burned because itwas a gust of wind Threw himself
(07:10):
onto the ground.
According to reports, the crewhad to toss blankets around him.
This is according to AubreyPowell, who was the photographer
hired for this particular shootand he said he knew that he had
a special picture.
Took a long time to persuadeRonnie.
He said to stand exactly as Iwanted, but in the end he was
(07:34):
very brave and it was a perfectcomposition.
He sustained numerous injuriesthroughout his career Broken
ribs, concussions Quoted assaying you never told anyone you
were hurt because they alwayshad another guy that could fit
the clothes.
(07:59):
As you listen to this, listen tothis instrument, the sort of
humming instrument.
Listen to this instrument, thesort of humming instrument.
Listen to this.
Do you know what that is?
That's David Gilmour on guitar, but what's the humming behind
it?
Is that a synthesizer?
(08:27):
What is it?
Anyhow, it is not a synthesizer.
It is not a synthesizer.
It is wine glasses.
Those are wine glasses atdifferent levels with beverages.
(08:53):
It's Pink Floyd, so brilliant, used those in Shine On you,
crazy Diamond.
They're, at the beginning, wineglasses.
Here they are talking about it.
Here's David Gilmour and theyactually.
You know, after a while Floydadopted the synth because they
(09:14):
weren't going to do the wineglasses on stage every time.
But what you're hearing in thatsong are wine glasses.
They weren't going to do thewine glasses on stage every time
, but what you're hearing inthat song are wine glasses here
um.
They talk about David Gilmour.
Has these gentlemen join themon stage during a Floyd concert
and actually play the wine glass?
Speaker 2 (09:30):
table a tall table
out there round table.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
He's doing the wine
glasses.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
It was a dare, and
he's gone for it.
Quite loud and they're quite.
If he had a mic right in themiddle and held them, probably
be quite good, or two mics.
You can stereo it.
Set Right me.
It's this thing, is it?
Is it marked?
What's?
Speaker 1 (09:52):
that Is it marked.
Tune it up.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Let's check.
Yeah, it's pretty good.
I think mine's a bit sharp.
We can fine tune them.
Then we repeat that.
So now go down to your A, toyour D, d, d, a.
Yeah, down to the C minor, thenyeah, down to the C.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
So now they go on
stage live and there are the
(10:37):
wine glasses.
You know, growing up I'd listento that record all the time and
I always assumed, I guess, thatthat was a synthesizer.
But part one of Shine On you, crazy Diamond.
There are no lyrics in thatpart and the section starts like
(10:58):
, when I just played there, thatit's a fade in of chords
created with synthesizers, yes,but with wine glasses.
Wright plays a synthesizerpassage, but it leads, and which
leads, into this guitar solo by, as I said, david Gilmour, but
the wine glass chords fade intothe background and are present
(11:19):
in the background all the entiretime.
And this came from a album, anEP, that Pink Floyd had done
years ago, well, in 1974, froman EP called Household Objects,
where they actually usedhousehold objects.
Here are the wine glasses inthe original EP, pink Floyd 1974
(11:43):
.
You'll recognize it right awayas the same, open, essentially,
as Shine On your Crazy Diamond.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Thank, you the, the,
the, the, the, the, the, the,
(12:12):
the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
The, the, the, the,
the, the, the, the, the, the,
the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the,
the, the, the, the.
That's Household Objects EP1974.
Pat's Peeps 318.
So I say rest in peace to thisiconic stuntman, ronnie Rondell
(13:06):
Jr.
Shine on, man.
One thing about Floyd is Ialways love the creative flow
that they have.
I love a band that is creative, that introduces new things.
I love the idea, for instance, household items.
(13:29):
That's a very creative idea.
I used to think about that.
Believe it or not, I'm always aguy thinking about music.
I remember I used to ride myCowie 250.
Every day I'd be out thereriding and I would think about
those things, like just thinkingof random things like that I
like to make music using becauseit made this sound on my
motorcycle.
I had this idea that I coulduse this particular sample of
(13:52):
the sound and I was going to geta T-Act mixing board and then,
like you could use drills, drills or you could use various
items to create multi-trackingand try to create content.
My mind always wants to createand I just remember that.
So I know that david bearwallon one of his albums he, uh, he
(14:13):
ended up doing that and itsounded really good.
I remember the drill sound inthere and I know there's other
people that have done these kindof things.
You know Judas Priest, what isthat song?
Metal Gods, jeez, this is sorandom.
Metal God, metal gods.
And there's a part of it whereit's like this metal going back
(14:35):
and forth and you're thinking.
I never really thought about it, I just it's a really cool part
of this song.
They couldn't find the soundthey were looking for, so
someone banged I can't rememberexactly how it was.
They were in someone's house orkitchen and someone banged into
the silverware drawer and theyall looked at the silverware
(14:56):
drawer and went, hey, that's it.
And they took the silverwaredrawer and shook.
All looked at the silverwaredrawer and went, hey, that's it.
And they took the silverwaredoor and shook it back and forth
and that's the sound for metalgods.
All right, here we go.
All right, here comes thesilverware drawer, check it out.
(15:44):
I don't know, I think that'spretty clever, All right, so
let's stick with that for asecond, shall we?
Shall we just stick with thatfor a second?
Let's go to Household Objectsto play some music.
Once again.
This is you know how you have a, and I have this a dryer.
When they tell you they havethis little tone that plays when
(16:05):
they're done, it's just thislittle song.
So here is a concerto with aSamsung speaker little song to
tell you that your wash is done.
Here we go.
Household items.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
All right, here you
go.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Here's an off-balance
washing machine.
Let's do a little ACDC, alittle Thunderstruck.
Here we go.

One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
The devil went down to Georgia.
He was looking for a soul tosteal.
He was in a vibe.
He was way behind.
(18:56):
He was willing to make a deal.
When he came across, this youngman saw him on a fiddle in a
planet hot, and the devil jumpedupon him.
He grew stumpy, said boy, letme tell you what I bet.
You didn't know it, but I'm afiddle player too and if you
care to take a dare, I'll make abet with you Now.
You play pretty good fiddleboys, but give the devil the
devil his due.
I'm in a fiddle of gold againstyour soul, so I think I'm
(19:19):
better than you.
The boys said my name's Johnny, and it might be a sin, but I'll
take your bet.
You're gonna regret, cause I'mthe best he's ever been.
Johnny, I'm in the fiddle, I'min the fiddle hall Household

Rest in peace.
(23:04):
You know, this is one of thosealbums.
It's one of the only albumsthat I can think of where every

On this album, more FM, theonly other one I can think of
record got played on the radio.
On this album, more FM.
