SPEAKER_00 (00:12):
Happy post
Thanksgiving, my friends.
It is the Pat's Peeps Podcast.
We're back after a couple ofdays' respite.
It's a rare Saturday podcast forme.
Pat's Peeps number 368.
November 29, 2025.
And today, as I look out mystudio windows into the
(00:34):
beautiful foothills of NorthernCalifornia, hoping you're doing
well.
It is a lovely sunny day whereI'm at.
But again, I'm up there in thefoothills in my mystery hut in
the forest, and uh it's foggydown in the lowlands again.
So I'm enjoying the sunshine.
I do appreciate you listening, and I hope you had a wonderful
(00:55):
Thanksgiving.
I hope that uh the meal wasgreat.
I was man, just Thanksgiving.
It's I love the holiday.
You know, you prep all day, youget ready, make that big dinner.
Dinner takes like what, 15, 20minutes, bloom, you're done.
On the couch.
(01:15):
Trip to fan is real, man.
I was like a bump on a log afterthat.
And got so much football thatday.
So much football.
So, anyhow, now we are back.
By the way, my name is PatWalsh.
I'm the host of the Pat WalshRadio Show.
KPK News Radio 93.1 FM 1530 a.m.
(01:36):
Streaming live on a free iHeartapp.
Don't forget to support yourlocal businesses.
Alright.
We're all about here.
Today I've got a record for mylocal record bin here.
Oh, rare record shelves.
Hold one up today.
I like this song.
You know, because it is the dayafter Thanksgiving, or a couple
(01:59):
days after Thanksgiving, and uhwe can we can now start
Christmas.
Celebrating Christmas stuff.
So coming up, I have someChristmas uh versions of some
Christmas songs you may not haveheard.
But before I get to that, youknow, today I was watching a
little TV, relaxing this morningwith my cup of coffee, and of
all things, so random comes onColumbo.
(02:21):
Even as a kid, I loved Columbo.
I told you before my mom lovedColumbo.
We always had to watch Columbo, but I liked it.
And there was this episode ofColumbo.
I've been looking for thisepisode for a long time.
It came out February 25th.
I just found it.
I looked it up because I justfound it.
It was the one that was on.
And I'm like, hey, this is theone I've been looking for for a
while.
February 25th, 1978.
(02:44):
And the episode is called MakeMe a Perfect Murder.
This episode featured uh TrishVandeveer in this scene, anyhow,
that I'm talking about.
This is Trish Vandeveer and uhJames McKeachin.
And of course Colombo.
And this episode, it made menotice something that prior to
(03:06):
this was a subliminal message.
This features a cue mark in afilm, which I had never seen.
So when you watch a film, there's always these cue marks,
which tells the projectionbooth, the guy running the
projection, when to switch thereels.
And during this executivescreening of this new and
violent TV movie, TheProfessional, the mastermind
(03:30):
here, Kay, takes her place inthe projection booth along with
Superfly projectionist Walter.
Ostensibly to ensure that hedoesn't foul things up for her,
but really because she wants tomurder.
Sending Walter off on alow-level errand.
Kay has four minutes.
And she has a timer.
(03:50):
She's on a timer.
She has four minutes in which tosneak to Mark's office, slay
him, get back to the projectionbooth, change the wheel, and the
delays will blow her covercompletely.
Any of those would blow hercover.
Now, just to set the beginningof that up, TV exec Mark
McAndrews gets promoted to headup the CNC Network's East Coast
(04:14):
promotions.
He has a nasty surprise.
This is the nasty surprise.
For his brilliant executiveassistant and secret lover Kay
Freestone, played by TrishVandevere, as I mentioned.
Not only is he not taking her toNew York with him, he's also not
gonna put her forward to replacehim as CNC's West Coast head
honcho.
In his own patronizing words, Ican't give you the West Coast,
(04:36):
babe.
Why?
Because although she's great atwhat she does, he believes she
doesn't make decisions but makesguesses, and it's too biz big of
a risk to fill his shoes.
Kay wanted the job, so she'smad, she couldn't hide it.
A final important and very poorattempt to sweeten the pill.
He reveals a peace offering.
He's brought Kay the Mercedesthat she's had her eye on, had a
(04:59):
personalized just for her, thelicense plate saying Kay number
one.
He says, Well, that that's acomment from the management.
But anyhow, she goes on to thishigh-risk revenge plan and she
murders him during the movie.
That's when I realized therewere these flashpoints, these
cue marks in the movies that Ihad never noticed before.
(05:22):
And now I notice them in everymovie I watch.
Well, there's a changeovercoming in about two minutes.
SPEAKER_04 (05:30):
I'll take care of
the changeover.
You just get those reels for me,please.
SPEAKER_00 (05:48):
And as you'll hear,
she'll be on this timer.
She's gotta go murder, committhe murder, then she's gotta be
back just in time to switch theprojection back.
Or the switch the reels.
(06:08):
So she goes and shoots him.
Honey, wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
Guy in the office overhearseverything.
She gets back to the projectionbooth.
SPEAKER_04 (06:21):
You have two minutes
and ten seconds.
SPEAKER_00 (06:25):
She's on her way
back, I should say.
Mark?
Mark's dead.
Two minutes.
Now what is she gonna do?
She's gonna hide the gun.
In the elevator, in the roof ofthe elevator.
Is it the elevator?
Maybe it's the office.
I can't maybe it's the office,excuse me.
(06:48):
It's in the office.
SPEAKER_04 (06:49):
You have one minute
and 30 seconds.
You have 15 seconds.
SPEAKER_00 (07:03):
Back in the
projection booth just in time.
SPEAKER_02 (07:12):
Six five four three
two.
SPEAKER_00 (07:19):
There's that flash.
There's that cue mark.
Usually shows up on the upperright portion of the screen.
Comes like a little s uh circleor a flash.
Here comes the projectionistback in the room.
Make the changeover, okay?
SPEAKER_04 (07:35):
Like a chan.
SPEAKER_02 (07:36):
Alright.
SPEAKER_00 (07:37):
Yeah, of course.
So now of course, you knowColumbo is on to her, right?
Because the McAndrews, who wasmurdered, wore glasses.
SPEAKER_03 (07:47):
I'd say he was 18
feet in by the time he pulled
the trip.
SPEAKER_04 (07:51):
Why couldn't a
stranger be 18 feet into a room?
SPEAKER_03 (07:54):
Well, let me put it
to you this way, ma'am.
If you were alone in a room atnight, lying on a couch, and a
stranger into.
Wouldn't you take a good look atit?
Wouldn't you want to see what itlooked like?
Yes.
That's the point, ma'am.
(08:14):
Mr.
McAndrew didn't bother to take areally good look.
Miss Freestone.
SPEAKER_00 (08:21):
She made the He
didn't take a good look.
He didn't bring down his glassesto see who it was, hearing the
stranger.
It was someone familiar, okay.
SPEAKER_03 (08:33):
Yeah, about two
minutes after I left, I checked
that counter.
You checked the counter, MissFreestone.
She changed the picture.
SPEAKER_00 (08:44):
Ah, then he finds
the glove.
Oh, if it doesn't if it doesn'tfit, you must have quit.
It's the glove!
SPEAKER_03 (08:55):
What splice?
You mean the film didn't break?
Isn't this one of those editor'sgloves?
SPEAKER_00 (09:02):
Uh right.
I mean, she could have fixed thefilm if anything happened, but
nothing happened to the film.
SPEAKER_03 (09:07):
You see, I use these
gloves because of the glue.
SPEAKER_00 (09:13):
Yeah, but he's got
her.
He always knows.
It's Walter's glove.
SPEAKER_04 (09:20):
Walter's projection
does.
I don't think you have a caseagainst Walter.
SPEAKER_03 (09:27):
No, ma'am, not the
way he kept that boot so
immaculate, no.
I don't see him just throwing aglove on the floor.
And the lamp says that thisglove has powder bronze on it.
And then there's the gun.
Mr.
McAndrew's gun.
(09:47):
The gun that murdered him.
The one that you put on theelevator.
Our people found at the second.
And then we took a second gun.
One that looked like this gun.
And we put it back on theelevator.
But it where it could be seen.
(10:10):
As if the continuous had jiggledit, so now it became visible.
Watch this.
That's a TV picture of where weplaced the second gun.
Just before you got on theelevator with me.
(10:33):
Now there.
That's the way it looked.
Right after you got back on theelevator and came off.
And you'll notice.
Not anymore.
SPEAKER_00 (10:52):
He got her.
I'll leave it at that.
The whole point being is eversince I saw that episode, I
could never unsee those littleflashes.
It could be a blotch, it couldbe a flash, it could be of some
kind.
It's like a circle.
I was so surprised that I sawthat.
(11:12):
Now maybe you'll see them.
You watch a movie, you go to thedrive, you I mean the drive-in,
you go to the drive-in too, butyou go to the theater and you're
gonna see those flashes.
Columbo was always on top of hisgame.
I just wanted to bring that, Ijust wanted to mention that
because I've been looking atlooking for that for so long.
I mentioned that, hey, it'sChristmas.
You know, it's time to celebrateChristmas.
(11:34):
So on another note, I thought, you know, here's some um
Christmas, some versions ofpretty popular Christmas music
that you may not have heard.
I usually seek seek out theChristmas music that you never
hear that that's just forgottenabout.
But these are some of the morefamous Christmas songs, but
perhaps you've never heard themin this way.

SPEAKER_00 (17:47):
I pulled a record
from my record shells today.
It's got two records in it.
I love this song.
Bolt in perfect mint conditionon United Artists record label.
The only thing on the records isa stamp from the radio station
or the record company, and itjust says November 1974.
(18:12):
White record white label on oneside, which is mono, not for
sale, promo not for sale.
The other side is yellow.
November 1974 stamp on that one, too.
So two records.
So they thought this was gonnabe a hit.
I do love it.
I don't know if it's a huge hit.
One side, the white side ismono, the yellow side is stereo.
(18:34):
I don't know, you know, this waskind of more of an FM song, I
think, than an AM song, but it'sone that I really always did
like.
Always liked this band.
Let's see, released on theband's fourth album.
You'll know right away if you'rea fan of the band, you know it
immediately when I tell you thealbum and who wrote it.
But it's on the album El DoradoOverture.
(18:58):
Elder I mean El Dorado, excuseme.
September 74.
It's the second track on thealbum that follows El Dorado
Overture.
Released November of the sameyear as a single.
So right there, November, justlike the stamp.
Became the band's first top tensingle.
I guess it was big on the AM.
I it went to number nine.
I don't know why I remember itmore on FM, but okay, it went to
(19:19):
number nine.
Let's see.
Help boost the uh publicawareness of this band in the
United States.
Okay, see uh the the single onthe LP failed to chart in the
UK.
In 78, it was included as thelead song on the four-track EP
UK release, when it went tonumber 34 on the UK charts.
(19:40):
It's appeared on a lot of thecompilation albums for this
band.
The artist, the uh person whowrote it, wrote it uh partially
in response to his father'scriticism that the previous
songs that he wrote didn't haveany tune.
Wanted to show that he couldwrite a song with a beautiful
metal melody.
Stated that the lyrics are abouta man who is dreaming, sees the
(20:00):
vision of loveliness, wakes up,finds that he's actually a clerk
working in a bank, and so hewill not be able to act on his
own, on his dream.
So this is written by Jeff Lynn.
Jeff Lynn, of course, is thefounding member and lead of the
Electric Light Orchestra, andthis is a great song called
(20:24):
Can't Get It Out of My Head onPat Speeps, 368.
(20:47):
Always reminded me of the Wizardof Oz, the whole El Dorado album
did.
The ocean's dark, beautifulstrings, beautiful cello,
beautiful drums.
(21:42):
I love this right here.
Michael D'Albuquerque on bass,Bev Bevan on drums.
SPEAKER_02 (22:06):
Michael Edwards on
cello Mick Kaminsky on violin,
Hugh McDowell on cello.
SPEAKER_00 (22:22):
Lewis Clark,
Orchestra conducting.
