Speaker 1 (00:03):
Just returned home
last night to Colorado from a
trip to Disneyland with my adultson yes, that Disneyland in
California.
And while my legs are stillsore and my head still spinning
from the teacups ride, thatexperience stirred up a
reflection that I'd like toshare with you today.
Stirred up a reflection thatI'd like to share with you today
(00:25):
this trip to Disneyland.
It was a blast and it gave meprecious time with my son or he
and I just to bond again when Iwas a younger man and he was
just a kid.
But it also helped me to seemore clearly what makes real
adventure so powerful.
Disneyland, I think, isdesigned for thrills, but also
(00:47):
in comfort and in safety, whilemotorcycling, I think, invites
us to become transformed.
So, whether you're packing foryour next adventure ride into
the backcountry or just dreamingabout one, join me as we
(01:15):
describe the difference betweenperhaps a manufactured magic and
authentic wonder, and whysometimes the happiest place on
earth may be where the pavementends.
Thank you for joining me today.
Recorded in beautiful Loveland,colorado.
Welcome to Peace.
Love Moto, the podcast formotorcyclists seeking that
(01:36):
peaceful, easy feeling as wecruise through this life
together.
Are you ready?
Let's go.
(01:59):
Disneyland is like this marvelof engineering, right and
imagination, and customerservice just off the charts.
From the moment you step outonto Main Street, usa, every
single detail is designed toimmerse you into this world of
(02:19):
fantasy the smell of popcorn, that perfectly synchronized
parade, those characters wavingat every corner, the impossibly
clean streets, the rides thatspin you and just send you
soaring into different galaxies, and enchanted forests.
It's all a master class, Iguess, in creating an illusion
(02:44):
of magic.
And that's the key, isn't it?
It's an illusion.
Every potential hiccup isanticipated well ahead of time
and ironed out.
The lines are managed.
They can be long and takeforever, it seems like, but
they're managed, and so is eventhe weather.
It's not controlled, certainly, but it's certainly planned for.
You pay a premium, of courseyeah, my wallet still hurts but
(03:10):
in return you get a seamless, predictable and undeniably fun
experience.
You know exactly what you'regoing to get, you know where the
next thrill is going to comefrom and you know it's going to
be safe.
It's a beautiful, polished,well-oiled machine.
(03:32):
I guess you could say it'sdesigned for maximum enjoyment
and minimal unexpected variables.
Now let's contrast that withthrowing our leg over an
adventure bike and heading intothe Colorado Rockies.
Well, it's a differentexperience, but it's magical too
(03:54):
.
I would say in my experienceyeah, it's magical out there,
and it's not all aboutperfection and smooth roads at
all.
Nothing's really choreographed,it's about the raw, unfiltered
reality of the world and, likethe line from Forrest Gump, I
(04:15):
think, an adventure ride.
Yeah, it's like a box ofchocolates.
You never really know whatyou're gonna get and I think
some adventures are best kept asa mystery.
The weather here in the coloradorockies, for example, can turn
on a dime one minute you're inthe sun and the next you're in a
downpour or even in some snow.
(04:38):
I have been snowed on in thehighest reaches of the Rockies,
above 10,000 feet.
I've been snowed on in July.
Yeah, it can just turn a dustyroad into a winter wonderland
pretty quickly.
Tires slip, the wind blows andsometimes doubt creeps in.
Was I going the right way?
(05:00):
Should I turn back?
Well, there's no VIP tour guidethat whisks you away to a
reserved viewing spot out therein the Colorado Rockies when
we're out riding.
No perfectly timed parades todistract us from the challenges
that we may be facing in life.
(05:23):
Challenges that we may be facingin life, it's just about you
and your bike out here in theRockies.
It's an unforgiving, yet realand yet beautiful mountain
experience, and I think it's inthose moments of struggle that's
where the real adventure beginsand that's the really big
(05:56):
difference, isn't it?
At Disneyland, the challengesare minimal and the reward is
instant gratification.
It's a meticulously designedhappy memory.
But in the backcountry, on yourmotorcycle, the challenge, the
challenge is real and it's oftenunpredictable and sometimes
(06:19):
even a little scary, but thereward, oh man, the reward is
really deep at times.
Most of the time, for me it's asense of self-reliance, of
overcoming and truly connectingwith this untamed world that's
(06:40):
all around us, especially herein the Colorado Rockies.
It's memories created from agenuine, real experience and I
think there's a sense of peace,at least for me, that comes from
navigating those real-worldchallenges, a kind of clarity I
(07:00):
guess you just can't find atDisneyland or any other place
that's crafted just for ourenjoyment.
It's about the wind, it's aboutthe smell of the pine trees, of
the damp earth after a rain, ever challenging terrain
underneath your tires.
I think it grounds us, itgrounds me, it forces me to be
(07:26):
present and there's no room inmy mind, thank goodness, to
wonder about work, emails, dailystresses.
I'm just going to be focused onthat loose gravel out in front
of me in the storm that may bebuilding, and for me, that's the
peace and that's the love thatI try to describe here.
(07:48):
In Peace, love Moto.
Yeah, right, here I keeptalking about the same thing.
It's the peace that comes frombeing fully immersed in the
moment and the love of thejourney, the machine and the
natural world all around us, themachine and the natural world
all around us.
It's the kind of love thatbuilds a shared struggle and a
(08:10):
mutual respect for Mother Nature.
My experience with my son atDisneyland this past week was
fantastic.
We had a blast experiencing somany things together and it
certainly offered a wonderfulescape for both of us, a
(08:31):
wonderful fantasy to get to goto and experience father and son
.
That's priceless and sometimeswe really need that.
And for those of us who write,I think the truly transformative
(08:55):
experiences, the ones thatstick with you, the ones that
change you, are found somewhereout there, where the pavement
ends and the wild begins, wherethe happiest place on earth
isn't necessarily a theme parkwith the fast passes and the
gyros and all of that.
Instead, maybe it's this vast, wide, open space just waiting to
(09:21):
be explored.
And in my experience, and maybein yours too, it's completely
amazing when you get to explorethose spaces on the back of a
motorcycle.
So next time, if you're planningan adventure, consider which
time, which kind of experienceyou are really looking for.
(09:43):
Is it manufactured perfectionor a raw, beautiful,
unpredictable reality out thereon the open road and in the wild
places?
Thank you so much for listeningand for sharing this podcast
with your friends.
Until we visit again.
(10:04):
As always, I wish you peace.
I wish you love.
