(00:13):
I've been good time drunk, enough to be badtime sober.
Broke a map dot's heart when it disappearedover my shoulder.
I've been headstrong right and dead and wrong.
Good with God, but I dropped the ball, spent mywhole life holding on.
(00:34):
But even when I fell off, the ride was worththe fall.
The fall was worth the smiles.
Smiles were worth the tears.
Tears were worth the miles.
Miles were worth the pain.
(01:39):
I've been headstrong right and dead in wrong.
Good with God, but I dropped the ball.
Spent my whole life holding on, but even when Ifeel lost, the ride was worth the fall.
(02:03):
Man, those are some lyrics, folks.
Those are some lyrics from one of the best toever pick up a microphone, mister Cody Johnson.
That's one of his new ones called the fall.
You gotta listen to it.
You gotta listen to the whole thing.
I'm a huge, huge Cody Johnson fan, but this onethis one might be his all time greatest.
(02:30):
This one might be the one that people rememberhim by.
He always sings with such I I don't even wannasay sings because I don't even call that
singing.
He tells stories with such conviction, and heis so relatable because of the topics he sings
about.
I I don't have anything wrong with today'scountry music.
(02:53):
I you know, today's country music is fine.
I I'm kind of, you know, partial to ninetiescountry, eighties country, even like old, you
know, old Hank senior, of course, Hank Williamsjunior.
And then for those of you that are thediabolical ones, Hank the third.
Maybe someday I'll have Hank the third music onthe podcast.
(03:16):
But but today's country with, like, tailgatesand beer and, you know, like, they're all the
same songs.
Fishing, hunting, loving every day.
Like, I think that's legit a a Luke Bryan song.
Cody Johnson, to me, is so relatable because hesings about topics that are real.
(03:41):
He sings about feelings that people actuallyfeel.
Now, you know, hunting, fishing, loving everyday, those are three awesome topics, but you
don't get moved by those topics.
At least listen at least I don't.
They're fun topics.
They're fun topics to talk about.
But if you actually look up the lyrics to thissong, I want you to listen to the lyrics to
(04:05):
this song for a second.
He said, the ride was worth the fall.
The fall was worth the smiles.
The smiles were worth the tears.
The tears were worth the miles.
The miles were worth the pain.
The pain was worth it all.
It's all worth this life.
Life is worth the ride, and the ride is worththe fall.
(04:30):
And he and he talks about it.
You know, you can you can go listen to the songand see what it means for you.
But it's it's very sim I think it's verysimilar to Garth Brooks' legendary song, The
Dance.
And The Dance is a heartbreaking song.
Again, if you're not a country music person, golisten to it.
(04:50):
If you are a country music person, you knowexactly what I'm talking about.
Life is full of, like, really bad stuff.
Life is full of tears.
Life is full of miles.
Life is full of taking swings and missing.
Life is full of lonely moments and badchapters.
(05:11):
And I know I've been I've kind of been, youknow, on this theme with the last several
episodes.
I'm not really sure why.
Again, I don't have I don't have many topics,like, truly ironed out.
I'm not well enough organized to to, like, havea method to my madness here.
(05:31):
But when I, when I was on my way home, I tookthe kids and my beautiful, lovely, legendary
wife, missus Shelby Turner.
I took them to Holiday World.
If you're in the Midwest, you've probably heardof Holiday World.
I am I am going to spare you all the details ofwhat this place is.
(05:52):
I'm gonna save that for a separate episode.
I kinda have a whole list of words that come tomind, and I actually I actually made a list
when I was in Holiday World.
It's a theme park.
It is a what they call a splashing safari inthe middle of nowhere Indiana cornfields, and
and you can only imagine the clientele.
(06:15):
It was it was a it was an interesting day.
But on the way home, I hear this new CodyJohnson song, and I I've heard it a few times,
but I never like, I've never slowed down longenough to listen to the words.
And so I paused it right in the middle of thesong.
Shelby is, like, in the passenger seat singingit.
And I started the song back over from thebeginning.
(06:36):
She's like, woah.
What are you doing?
I like that song.
Like, yeah.
I know.
I I wanna actually listen to the words becauseI think he's telling a story here, I and wanna
hear what he's talking about.
And and then I went and looked up the lyrics, and I'm like, man, this is this is this is a
real topic.
Like, I I've got a I've got a way to tie allthis into the topic today and how this relates
(07:00):
to this episode.
But, man, I I tell you, if my world endedtomorrow, if my business ended, if my marriage
ended, if someone shut the lights out on me,it's all been worth it.
(07:21):
I've thought a lot, to be honest with you.
I've thought a lot about my business failingover the years.
I've thought what it would be like, theembarrassment, the humiliation, the struggles,
the financial pressure that would come from it,the marriage stress that would come from it.
I've thought a lot about the end of somethingreally special that I've been working on
(07:43):
building with some really special people.
And and I always come to the same conclusion.
I'm like, you know what?
If it all ended tomorrow, the ride has beenworth the fall.
The fall from grace, the fall from publicity inour industry, the fall from the reputation that
we've worked so hard to build, the ride and andthe struggles, and the grind, and the people,
(08:09):
and the lessons, it's all been worth it.
If it all falls tomorrow, it's all been worthit.
I think the same for my marriage.
I I mean, you know, Lord willing, my marriagelasts as long as I'm on this earth.
But if for some reason she just walked intomorrow and said, hey, I I'm looking for
(08:30):
something different, and you're not it.
And the heartbreak that comes with that, again,go listen to Garth Brooks' song, The Dance.
No matter how terrible of a situation I wouldfind myself in there, it would all have been
worth it.
All the good moments, all the good memories, the three beautiful kids that we made together,
all the pictures that we took, the trips thatwe went on, the the ride, the dance has been
(08:57):
worth it.
And and I think a lot of people get blinders onwhen when you're when you're going through the
ride.
I think a lot of people get a misconception ofwhat the ride is supposed to look like.
(09:19):
I think a lot of people get disheartened.
I think a lot of people, you know, they work, they work, they work, they work, and then all
of a sudden, one day, they either achieveeverything they've been trying to achieve, and
and it's all great, and they sell theircompany, and they make all the money, or they
don't achieve all the things they wanted toachieve, and they shut the doors.
(09:45):
And I think in both scenarios, both guys, theguy that makes all the money and has all the
money in the bank and is now trying to figureout what to do next, and the guy that has no
money with no money in the bank and is tryingto figure out what to do next, I think they
both look back and say, man, what a ride.
Like, the ride was worth it.
(10:06):
The ride was worth selling the business andmaking all the money.
And the guy that lost it all is like, man, youknow what?
It's tough, but I think the ride was worth itbecause it's gonna help me in my next thing, my
next chapter, my, you know, my next whatever.
I think both guys look at the ride, not theend, not the fall.
(10:28):
I'm gonna tell you a couple stories, andthey're my two I've got several, you know,
recent losses in the loss column, but I'm gonnatell you two of my biggest losses from last
year.
And the two losses that I took on the chin andand how it all happened.
(10:50):
I'm gonna tell it to you as quick as possibleand without going into all the juicy details
and getting a bunch of people riled up andfrustrated and mad.
I'm not gonna call out any names because at theend of the day, I made two big mistakes last
year that cost our company, somewhere between 6and $8,000,000 depending on how I add it all
(11:13):
up.
So here we go.
The sky was worth the fall.
The fall was worth the smiles.
The smiles were worth the tears.
Tears were
worth the miles.
Miles were worth the pain.
Pain was worth it all.
(11:35):
It's all
