This month we feature two of our poster competition winners from the 2024 STLE Annual Meeting. With us we have Joseph Shore who presented on "Predicting Electric Vehicle Transmission Efficiency Using a Thermally Coupled Lubrication Tool", and Ujjawal Arya with his research on "A Novel Multiphase CFD Model for Investigating the Flow Dynamics of Aerated Bubbles in Bearing Lubrication." Join us as we talk about where these two got these great ideas from and where their research as taken them since.
Our guests:
Ujjawal Arya is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University and is working under Prof. Farshid Sadeghi. His research focuses on bearing lubrication, employing novel visualization techniques alongside computational and numerical models to gain fundamental insights into various tribological phenomena.
Joseph Shore is currently a research associate in the SKF UTC for Tribology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research is focused on the efficiency and reliability of rolling element bearings. He completed his PhD "A New Thermally Coupled Lubrication Model for the Prediction of Transmission Efficiency in Electric Vehicles" in 2024. This work focused on the development of an efficiency model of an entire EV transmission, incorporating measured lubricant rheology to allow the model to distinguish between nominally similar oils in terms of their impact on overall drive unit efficiency. During his PhD he undertook a 3 month placement at Valvoline's New Product Development Lab and Engine Lab in Kentucky during which he obtained results on a real vehicle to validate the model's predictions. Prior to his PhD, Joseph completed a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial, graduating with a first in 2019.

Cardiac Cowboys
The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
