Scott Radford (00:14):
Welcome. I'm Scott Radford This is the
performance hackers. And today'ssolo episode on one of the most
important subjects I think, inhigh performance. And that's
clarity, finding and buildingthe clarity that we need to
commit to the changes that wewant to make in our lives. Now,
clarity provides pretty much thefoundation to every decision
that you make in life, right.
But most people actually findthemselves pretty overwhelmed

(00:34):
because they always start acouple of stages down the track.
And so today, I wanted to laythe foundations on how to build
that inner clarity before wethen go on to answering the big
questions about what your visionand purpose on this earth look
like. And so on this episode,I'm going to share with you the
three steps that I used to helpme build that inner clarity and
not feeling like you can make amove and take action until

(00:56):
you've got all the answers.
That's just not the case. Now,yes, clarity does provide the
foundations for every decisionyou make. But more importantly,
it also creates the safety to goall in. And you've probably
experienced this when you feellike you need to change your
life and you try out a couple ofnew things that you think might
be the solution. And for somereason, you're just not fully

(01:19):
committing to that change. Andthat's because the mind doesn't
believe that it's safe to takethose actions. And so providing
the internal clarity through thethree steps I'm going to share
with you will show your mindthat it's actually safe to go
all in and to take the committedaction that you know, is the
only way that you can getresults. And if we're not
satisfied with who we areinternally, let's be honest, no

(01:42):
external success is going tomake us happy when we come into
this process. And we're tryingto find the clarity of what you
want to focus on. We often comein with so many limitations on
what we think we can possiblyachieve based on false limiting
beliefs we've picked up duringour lives, things like not
feeling like we're qualifiedenough or not having the right
skill sets, maybe even not beingthe type of person who does x.

(02:05):
And so we limit ourselves onactually truly opening up the
possibilities for us. But thefact of the matter is, if you
can describe your ideal self, then you actually have the
capacity to build it alreadywithin you, as your perception
often determines your reality.
And we've seen this in so manystudies in the past, and one
that springs up is the one youmight have heard of with the
kittens and the boxes, and howsome kittens were placed in

(02:27):
boxes with just horizontal lineson it. And other kittens were
placed in boxes with verticallines on it. And they found that
when they finally released thekittens out, the ones that grew
up in the boxes with just thehorizontal lines, they couldn't
actually see or perceiveanything in the vertical plane.
So they were bumping into chairlegs and other things that were
on the vertical aspects ofobjects. And that's because

(02:48):
their brain just couldn'tperceive anything outside of the
realm in which they had alreadybeen exposed to. And this is
exactly the paradigm that weoperate when when we're trying
to build a future that's sovastly different to what we've
already built. The truth is youget the reality you commit to.
And so inner clarity is so soimportant, because not only does
it minimise the doubt that youhave in yourself, but it

(03:09):
actually increases that selfconfidence. It's required to go
out there and take the committedaction to be successful in
another endeavour. But it canalso help you learn your
strengths and work on yourweaknesses as you go through the
self reflection process to findthis clarity. Now, before you
even started to think about thefuture and setting your vision
and your goals, you need tounderstand where you're taking

(03:30):
off from, like, where are youcurrently at. And so you need to
meet yourself where you're atwith no judgement either of
yourself, or where you findyourself at the moment, or where
other people are at where youfeel that you should be at this
stage, try and take somebaselines and get some real data
on where you're at, and what itis that you're missing what it
is that you currently desire.

(03:51):
And this can be done prettyeasily just in a journal in the
evening. Once you've done thatstep two is to find your values.
And there's a great quote byAdam Grant that says following
your passions is a luxury, following your values is
necessity. And I couldn't agreemore. I think a lot of people
get lost in not knowing whatthey want to do next, I think
you're asking yourself the wrongquestion here. I think it has to

(04:13):
be about who you want to be andnot what you want to do. And if
we think of this from a culturalagency point of view, yes, a lot
of us in the western world havesuch a privilege of being able
to get to take time on ourjourney to find out who we're
meant to be or what we want todo that a lot of people around
the world don't have thatcultural agency, yet, they're
still able to find thefulfilment and the passion and

(04:36):
the happiness that we're allsearching for. And they do that
because they're acting inalignment with the values that
they live by. And so there'sloads of different methods you
can use to finding some of yourcore values. But one example
I've got from the flying worldis what I call the black box
method. Now some of you might befamiliar with a black box is
essentially a piece of recordingequipment that's in most

(04:56):
commercial aircraft and itrecords basically From the
moment the aircraft starts tothe moment, it stops. And so on
big emergencies, this black boxwill be pulled from the
aircraft. And then they'llanalyse this, to understand what
happened, what went wrong, andwhat we could do to improve in
the future. And so on my lastbig emergency that I had, I
remember looking down at thescreen, and just thinking to

(05:19):
myself, How do I want to comeacross when they're analysing
this data and this voicerecorder back in an office with
a cup of tea next to them? Howdo I want to come across in this
moment, and it provides suchclarity of thought about what
your next actions are? And so byalmost stepping out of the
situation, and thinking, howwould I analyse this tomorrow?

(05:39):
How do I want to come acrossnow, so that when I'm looking
back at this tomorrow, I'mshowing up how I want to show
up. And so if you were todescribe how you've been in
situations in just the last fewmonths, and then think about how
your future self would show up,if you knew that you were maybe
pulling that black box out andanalysing it the day later, what
are the three words thatdescribe the person that you

(06:01):
want to show up in life as andmaybe that you want other people
to remember you as as well? Onceyou've got those three words,
don't just put them aside andthen get on with your life? How
are you going to remind yourselfevery single day to show up with
those three values. For mepersonally, I like to set
notifications on my phone thatpop up, to remember to be the
type of person that I wanted.
And it just allows you to startbeing a little bit more

(06:23):
intentional with the values thatyou actually want to live day by
day by.
And the third and final step totry and find that inner clarity
is to determine the feelingyou're after a lot of time when
I asked people, what are youtrying to feel? What feelings
are you going after? A lot ofpeople just don't have a clue
they have not attached a feelingto the goals or the vision that

(06:45):
they're trying to go after. Andyes, emotions are instinctive.
So when we're talking aboutemotions, we're talking about
perceived threats or fear oreven love, they're often quite
physical, whereas feelings areactually the mental portrayal of
an emotion. So when you get anemotional response, you actually
have the power to determine whatfeeling you get from that

(07:08):
emotion. And this is whereathletes differentiate
themselves the most, becausethey're able to take the same
emotion of fear or stress andturn it into a feeling of
readiness and being in the zone,as opposed to it being anxiety
or some other unwanted feelingat the time. And so ask
yourself, or is the feeling thatyou want or you crave currently,

(07:28):
do you have unity between yourthoughts and your actions. Now I
do say that clarity is a contactsport, that you need to be an
action, you need to be in motionto start building the picture.
As we'll discover in a secondpart of this clarity podcast,
you only really need ahypothesis to get you going. But
if you can recognise thefeelings that you're after, and
the zone of genius that youoperate in, it then starts to

(07:51):
reinforce that intuition. Andthen that shows you more
examples of those opportunities.
And so a little tasks I getpeople to do when they're trying
to determine the feeling thatthereafter is to get a third
party perspective of it. Whydon't you try and ask those
people that are close to you, whose opinions you respect what
qualities they will describe youas having? What is your
superpower, because it's hard toreally know what you value

(08:13):
unless it's challenged, unlesspeople see it in you and you
feel proud. Or maybe peopledon't see what you think you
display. And it makes you feelupset or frustrated or annoyed.
So this is a real treasure chestin terms of opening up to this
self awareness and understandingthe feelings you're after how
you want to be perceived byyourself through your eyes and

(08:34):
through other people's eyes. Andso once you've got a little bit
of a temperature check of whereyour current position is, what
your values are, that youactually want to live by and
show up by, and the feelingsthat you're trying to generate
in building something new ordifferent. And it's only really
once we've got those threethings in place that we're then
able to go on and ask thequestion of what our vision or

(08:55):
our purpose might be for thefuture and actually start taking
some defined action towardsthat. Now in order to set goals
and create a plan and take someaction, basically move your life
forward, you're going to needouter clarity, and having that
clarity then brings more energyand more focus into your day.
And so before I share with youthe three steps to building more
outer clarity in your life, it'sreally important that we get the

(09:18):
basics right first, first ofall, in order to set yourself up
to find more mental clarity, weneed to be able to reduce the
stress and anxiety that we'reputting on ourselves. Now
chronic stress contributes tohigh cortisol levels, which
essentially means a weakenedcirculation and so poor
circulation results in the heartfiring less oxygen to the brain.

(09:38):
And this can then cause a lackof mental clarity. And
ironically that in turn, like avicious cycle amplifies your
stress and anxiety levels. Andso what you want to try and do
is reduce that stress andanxiety even if it's just on a
short term basis while youfigure this next step out there.
Same goes with sleep withoutseven or more hours of sleep a
night. The mind and body reallyjust struggled to exhibit high

(10:01):
performance behaviour. Andfinally, nutrition as well, if
you can try and nail yournutrition, so that you're
optimising your diet for morevitamin B, 12, and omega three
fatty acids in particular, theseboth massively boost the brain
and the immune system and helpboost mental clarity. And so
vitamin B 12, found in fish, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy

(10:23):
products, things like that. Soonce we've got the basics
straight, and we've sort ofphysically set ourselves up for
enhanced mental clarity, thefirst step you need to take is
to try and define what'smeaningful for you. Where do you
derive most of your personalsatisfaction from what are you
passionate about what allows youto grow or allows you to
contribute more, those aregenerally going to add to what

(10:46):
you're going to find meaningfulgoing forward, once you define
what's meaningful for you, thesecond step is to set your
vision. So without a biggervision of what you want to
create, a lot of people justseem to stay motivated by their
short term needs and comfort.
And so the urgency of your dayto day life ends up just

(11:07):
crowding out the questions ofthe long term purpose that
you're trying to create. And sofrom the last episode about
inner clarity, you already knowwhat you want to be. But when
you're looking about what youwant to do, in order to be that
person, you kind of need to lookat this at a more macro level.
And I like to do this by lookingat what I want my perfect week
to look like in the future. Soagain, if you can define and

(11:29):
then vision, what you want thatperfect week to look like, What
things does it have thatcontribute to it, what things
are there to challenge you tokeep you engaged to keep you
enthusiastic? How can youdisplay the attributes, the
values, the skills, you want todemonstrate on a daily and a
weekly basis. And the key parthere, when you're setting your
vision is don't think that oneactivity, one job role is going

(11:54):
to give you all the ingredientsyou need to live the dream life,
it just doesn't work like that,I'd like to see it a little bit
more like a big ingredients listthat has different levels and
quantities of ingredients that Ican increase or decrease
depending on what I findmeaningful at the time. And so
if I was to give an example, forme, I would say that I
absolutely love flying, andtravelling, and seeing the world

(12:17):
and exploring. And so I'm nevergonna give up flying at this
stage, because it contributes somuch to my life. However, I
didn't want to do it everysecond of the day. And so
therefore, I knew that theingredient was important. But I
knew that I needed to reduce theratio of that ingredient in
order to set my perfect week, the things that I was missing

(12:38):
from my job as an airline pilot,I then went looking for in other
aspects. And then I was able toadd those parts into that week
in order to create thisbalanced, full, meaningful week.
And so what are the ingredientsthat you need in your perfect
week going forward in thefuture? And at what ratios do
you need them to happen? Thethird step I found that was

(12:59):
really helpful for me, was toimitate then innovate. Now, I
had absolutely no idea initiallywhat I wanted to do. But I did
know that my fear of judgementand failure of not being proven
or credible in a new endeavour,I knew that that was holding me
back, I knew that I was makingme play small. And those fears

(13:21):
are ultimately going to try andinfluence what your mind tells
you, your options are right? Soyou're going to automatically
limit yourself to what you thinkis possible based on those fear
and those limiting beliefs. Andso if you were to ask yourself
what you truly wanted, what areyou not allowing yourself to
admit you want? If there were noconstraints or rules, and

(13:41):
everyone had to start fromscratch? What would you get
excited about? And then you candefine what primary field of
interest that's in. Once you'vegot that primary field of
interest, go and find examplesof those that have achieved
success in there. What threeskills make people successful in
that field? And what can you nowdo to develop them. So maybe

(14:01):
it's starting a course, maybeit's reading a couple of books,
or maybe it's just buying someequipment and taking some
action, whatever it is, put itin your diary, try and make this
stuff happen. And then askyourself what skills are going
to be needed in five to 10 yearstime in this primary field, so
you can get an awareness ofwhether you actually want to go
down that track and learn thoseskills. Guys, one thing I will

(14:22):
say to close this section out onclarity is that this isn't a
perfect formula, like thisriddle is not going to be sold
for good. Once you find clarity.
It's an ongoing process, youwill have to ask yourself
questions to stay on track tostay aligned to stay focused as
you go along. In this process, don't think that anybody's got a
clear defined purpose and visionof what they're doing. And

(14:43):
that's how it's going to stayfor life. Because let's be
honest, if you're anything likeme, that sort of thinking is
probably what's got you intothis hole in the first place. I
thought that once I'd got mydream career and set myself up
in an amazing country and starta little side project, that
would be he sorted for life Iwas. But actually when you get
there and you achieve that andyou experience it, your mind

(15:03):
still wants to ask what's next.
And so if you just accept thatit's going to be an ongoing
process that you're going toneed to adjust your heading from
time to time and still askyourself your questions, is what
you're doing still meaningful toyou? Is it still giving you what
you need at this time, you haveto stay proactive. But the one

(15:23):
key thing here is that being inmotion is the best place to be
to continue to learn more, andto hone your vision of the
future. And it's when you stopand procrastinate, that's when
you find yourself stuck, overwhelmed, overthinking, and
unable to find the clarity. Sowhatever it is, wherever you're
at, just find the quickest pathin to motion again, because like

(15:45):
I said before, clarity is acontact sport. Now, guys, I'm so
passionate about this topic, Iwould really love you to reach
out if you're struggling with soin any way. If there's anything
that you found useful or thatyou've put into action, please
do get in contact because I'malways trying to learn about
other people's methods, findingthe clarity in their lives. This
truly is one of the mostimportant habits you can develop

(16:07):
as a high performer in order toget yourself back on track as
quickly as possible. And thankyou so much for being part of
this community and listening tothe podcast once again. Speak to
