In the first half of *The Yellow Wallpaper* by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a woman suffering from nervous troubles is brought to a secluded house by her physician husband for rest and recovery. Confined to an upstairs room with barred windows and hideous yellow wallpaper, she’s forbidden from writing or engaging her mind. As her isolation grows, she becomes increasingly fixated on the wallpaper’s strange, chaotic patterns, sensing something unsettling beneath its surface.
