Brady Armstrong has been withthe Boys and Girls Club for a
(00:21):
few years now.
He is the chief developmentofficer.
Welcome back to the show.
Thank you for having me.
You've got a big deal coming upfor a few years now.
He is the Chief DevelopmentOfficer.
Welcome back to the show.
Thank you for having me.
You've got a big deal coming upin a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, we've got our
26th annual Casino Night
fundraiser, so Casino Night isour biggest fundraiser of the
year, as you well know.
It's a great time of year tosee everybody and to raise some
money for kids in the community.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Yeah, well, before we
get talking, a little bit more
about the specifics of theCasino Night, what's new at the
Boys and Girls Club this year?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, we are busy, as
always.
We're in 13 locations now, serving across Ogden, Manhattan
and Wamego.
We've got our Early LearningCenter and our Teen Center are
both up and running and growing, seems like every week we got
over 80 kids out at the earlylearning center and over 30
teens coming every day, so it'sbeen an exciting time was it
(01:12):
just last year.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
We opened the alert.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
The early it was uh
last summer, so a little over a
year ago 80 kids yeah, um,infants through toddlers, and it
continues to grow.
We've got space to add more.
Even so, if you're looking forchildcare, come see us.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Okay, well, that's
been a wonderful asset, and tell
us a little bit more about theteen center.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Yeah, the teen center
has been great.
So for years, for almost ourentire 30 years of serving kids,
we'd had a dream of opening ateen center.
They had been out staying attheir middle schools for most of
that time.
So we were in a great teenprogram but it was smaller than
we would have liked, especiallyat that age.
I think the kids really wanttheir own space.
(01:58):
They want somewhere where theycan go and kind of build their
community outside of school.
So we were thrilled last yearand kind of build their
community outside of school.
So we were thrilled last year, once we had opened up in all of
the elementary schools, we wereable to convert our Fifth Street
building into its ownstandalone teen center and it's
been going great over there sofar.
Mr Anthony is doing a great jobwith those kids.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
All right.
Well, a lot of good thingshappening with the Boys and
Girls Club.
I mean, there's always been aneat lineage of events, always
something new, responding to theneeds of the community,
especially, I think, you know, the early learning center was
one that probably stands out inmy mind, at least as far as you
(02:39):
know.
Trying to answer a call, andyou continue to do that.
Trying to answer a call, andyou continue to do that.
Now you are still in somewhatof a growth slash, expansion
mode because here again, responding to the call and the
need, and that brings out theimportance of the casino night,
which I've seen that grow.
(03:00):
Yeah, yeah, I'm sure, and I'mpretty proud of the fact that
I've been a part of every one ofthose 26 years.
Yeah, that's exciting.
26 years, see, and you werelike four when we first started.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, I wasn't.
I didn't make it to the firstfew, but I've been having fun
these last couple years.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Yeah, but it started
here at this building, the
Colony Square building, downhere at 15 points, and you know,
and then it just you know, hasexpanded and this year we are
back at the K-State AlumniCenter.
I'm excited about that.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yeah, I think it'll
be a lot of fun.
It's a great facility and we'vegot some new stuff this year.
We're trying out that.
I think the Alumni Center willbe great for.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Okay, so can you tell
us anything about the news?
It's going to be a surprise.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
No, I can tell you
right now.
So we always have a fun themefor Casino Night and this year
we picked prom Prom.
It's right around prom time, sowe thought you can either
relive or redo your prom, depending on how it went the
first time.
But we're adding for the firsttime, I think, a dance floor as
well, so we'll have a little bitof a party at the end.
It is the first time.
(04:10):
Okay, yes, I thought so.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
It is the first time
which I'm excited about being a
part of that aspect too, becauseI get to emcee it and there's
some technical aspects that Iassist with too, and now I get
to spend some Babaloos for you.
Yeah, I think that's going tobe a lot of fun.
Have you ever heard the termBabaloos?
I haven't, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, see, this goes back along ways, as do I, but I'm
(04:34):
looking forward to that.
So, a prom theme we have.
Do we have a time frame withthe prom music?
You know, some of us, you know, went to prom back in the 70s.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Yeah, some of us will
be there in the 60s I uh, I
didn't want to put a decade onit.
It's whatever you feel, if youwant to do your modern prom or
you want to throw it back toyour when you went, whether that
was, uh, the 80s and 90s oreven earlier.
But, um, hopefully everyonewill kind of dress up and come
and dance with us and raise somemoney for a great cause.
(05:05):
I gotta find something new towear.
Yeah, do we have a color theme?
Um, so the colors this year arekind of some blues, silvers and
whites, kind of going alongwith our bgc colors as well,
which I think is a nice fit allright, sounds good.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
So let's kind of go
through some of the activities
of the casino night.
Because you got, you bring thecasino games in.
People start playing.
So at the alumni center, tickets are available tickets
are available now.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yep, um, you can
check out our facebook page BG
Club Manhattan or just gostraight to our website
bgclubmanhattancom.
Okay, All right.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
And doors open at
Doors are at 6 o'clock.
Okay, there will be games, there will be drinks, there will
be food.
There will be a live auction.
Yes, Silent auction too.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Yeah, both, we got
both auctions.
So, yeah, doors will be at 6.
We'll have a couple hours ofkind of a cocktail hour and
we'll have the gaming tablesopen.
We'll have a few blackjacktables, some roulette and craps
as well, time for folks tomingle and get to see everybody,
and then we will also have thelive auction and the silent
(06:14):
auction going on as well, Ithink one of the things I like
about this is this is justreally a neat community event
that has just developed.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Yeah, and it is a
very.
It is a fundraiser We'd nevertake away from that, but it is a
wonderful social event becausepeople just it's, it's a great
gathering.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, I think that's
one of my favorite parts as well
, is that?
Uh, it does.
It raises money and goesstraight to a great cause here
in our community.
But it's also become um a greatevent for folks to see each
other at and to kind of check inon friends and on what's going
on with the club.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Yeah, and and it's
tough for me because I never
know who I'm going to sit withoh yeah, because you know
there's some people havestandards.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Well, I'm sure we'll
find you a spot.
We'll find a seat for me, acocktail table.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
So so let's talk
about uh, what needs you're
going to be funding with theproceeds from the casino night?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah, I think, um,
one of our main missions since
we opened has been access.
We always we take pride inmaking our programs available to
all families in our communityat low or no cost.
However, it is not low or nocost to create these programs
and to hire our great staff andto get the supplies and give the
(07:34):
kids the experiences theydeserve.
So a lot of what this fundinggoes towards is getting kids
access to our programs andscholarshiping their fees and
making sure no one is unable toattend due to inability to pay,
pay, and there'll be severaldifferent ways that we're going
(07:54):
to be raising money for this.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Once again, this is
April 4th, april 4th.
We haven't even mentioned thatyet, have we?
No, we should get that in.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
That's important to
know Next Friday, april 4th,
that's a week and a half away.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
I know it's coming up
, wow, and you still have some
tickets available.
Yes, we do Good to know, goodto know, and one of the things
also that is important aboutthese things is the fact that
you have a wide combination ofopportunities for people to give
.
There's the sponsorships.
You've got a lot of people thatcome in and help support the
(08:32):
whole activity from its get-go.
Do you have some key?
Speaker 2 (08:34):
people involved there
.
Yeah, we have great sponsorsevery year.
This year again, steel and PipeSupply is our presenting
sponsor.
They've been a great supporterfor our entire 30 years, going
back to Dennis Mullen helpingfound the club, and then a
number of people throughout thethe years matt crocker uh tyler
(08:54):
dave line is on our board now.
It's been exciting to get towork with him.
So steel and pipe is an amazingpartner.
Uh, prairie band, pottawatomienation, is another uh great
sponsor who's been around forquite a while.
Um, and then some uh other uhlocal amazing companies the
trust company, coxcommunications, um, a lot of
great folks hoping to put thison.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
And it is a
celebration of community, and I
think that that's one of thethings I enjoy about this event
so much, because it is just gotsuch a good vibe, yeah, all the
way through, from the beginningto the end and then thereafter.
What are some of the excitingthings you got up on the auction
?
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yeah, the auction has
some exciting stuff this year
some old favorites and some newthings.
One I always think is a verycool and unique experience is a
game day package with GeneTaylor.
You can get to go spend gameday with him and watch the game
and sit in his box.
We have a vacation to Cancun, mexico, this year that we're
(09:53):
excited about, um, and a newitem I just found out about last
week uh, you'll be able to.
If you're enjoying the mcstylings of dave lewis.
You can bid on a uh, a gameshow in your home, which I think
is cool.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
People will be
excited about yeah, are you
gonna put that on the live?
I think so.
Yeah, cool yeah.
And there are a lot of peoplethat are familiar with the work
that I do.
I have been for the last 20 someyears doing game shows for all
kinds of different types ofevents and I kind of created a
little thing because I'd hadsome people ask me about you
know, hey, can you do somethingin our house?
And it's just basically, youknow, I come in, plug into your
(10:30):
big TV and you know, it's justfun entertainment, great for
kids parties.
I can scale it down to I can.
It could be all adults, itcould be all kids, but I'll tell
you what.
Some of the adult content isnot appropriate for kids.
But but I'm I'm excited to beable to provide that for you and
I think a lot of that has to dowith the history that Boys and
(10:53):
Girls Club has trusted in me tobe a part of this event forever,
and there were some tough timesbecause I remember my wife
passed away in January of 06.
The first event I did after thatwas the Casino Night.
It was up at Houston StreetBallroom and we introduced Ron
Prince and Bill Snyder andthey're during the stage at the
(11:16):
same time and that was a bigdeal when, when Prince first
came in his first publicappearance because he had just
been hired, and and so you knowthere's.
But I just remember CoachSnyder coming up and talking to
me and and extending hissympathies and concerns and and
and hopes, and that is a memorythat I have that I would not
(11:40):
have had if it weren't for theBoys and Girls Club.
But but then again, you know,it's just like's.
Just like that one wasmeaningful, powerful at the time
.
But I've had so much fun doingthese things in the past.
Good to work with Jeff Ruckertagain.
He's always fun to include.
We've got a pretty good rapporttogether.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yeah, you guys have
quite the back and forth and
you've got a bunch of silentauction items too.
Yeah, we have lots of excitingstuff on there.
Silent auction items too.
Yeah, we have uh lots ofexciting stuff on there.
Um, one that's always afavorite of mine is you.
Uh, we got a pass to skip theline at the chef.
So if you're uh on a sundaymorning and you want to go to
brunch and you just don't wantto wait in line, rachel and chad
(12:16):
have provided us with a fastpass to to get to the front.
Um, we always have somepartners.
Yeah, they're awesome.
Um, rachel serves on our board.
She does a great job.
We've always got lots ofexciting sports memorabilia.
We just got a Bobby Witt signedjersey.
Really, yeah, I think peoplewill be excited about that one.
Oh, is that on the silentauction?
(12:37):
We've got that one on thesilent right now.
I've got some other memorabiliafor the live auction.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Well, you get that
now.
That's an investment.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Yes, and these will
go live here pretty soon,
probably later this week.
So if you want to startchecking it out before the event
, you can go in and get yourbids.
Speaker (12:53):
BeautyClubManhattancom
.
Yep, okay, all right, we talkedabout a bunch of stuff.
Get your tickets if you haven'tdone so already.
You're probably getting down tothe point where you don't have
a whole lot left.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Yeah, we've got a
little bit of room, but the
tables are starting to fill up,so if you want to get your
tickets, you can get them now.
There is a discount count aswell to do a full table if you
want to bring your friends.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
Sounds good, brady.
I'm looking forward to it.
Thanks for requesting me to bea part of it.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
We're going to have a
bunch of fun.
Yeah, we will.
Uh, mc emeritus, I think, wasthe term you coined.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Well, you know, I I
had used that once and, and then
somebody said but but emeritusmeans you've retired.
Okay, yeah, We'll have to.
I'm not retired, so don't know.
We'll have to open up the SARSand see what we can find out.
Yeah, I'm a little preoccupiedtoday with the CFAs, I know.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Yeah, we're trying to
be there.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
So, yeah, and there's
going to be a nice
representation, yeah, so we'relooking forward to everybody
being there.
