Scott Gordon (00:01):
Welcome to a very
special episode of Placing you
First.
Today we're celebrating our100th episode, and we couldn't
think of a better way to markthe occasion than by bringing
back our very first guest from2019, neal Kessler, now CEO of
CRC Specialty and Benefits.
Amanda Knight (00:19):
That's right.
Neal helped launch this podcastsix years ago and so much has
changed since then for CRC, forthe industry and for Neil
himself.
So today we're going to reflecton that journey, the challenges
we faced and the growth we'veachieved, and talk about what
the future looks like fromNeil's point of view going
forward.
Scott Gordon (00:37):
So, from
navigating M&A and pandemics to
building a stronger, smarterorganization, we're diving into
it all.
Amanda Knight (00:45):
This is the
Placing you First podcast from
CRC Group.
Scott Gordon (00:48):
This podcast
features news and insights from
a vast knowledge base of over5,100 associates.
Amanda Knight (00:54):

than $35 billion in premium
annually.
Plus, we give you the latestinformation on what's happening
at CRC this this.
Scott Gordon (01:02):
This is the
Placing you First podcast and
now the hosts of the podcastAmanda Knight and Scott Gordon.
Neil, welcome back to the show.
Neil Kessler (01:12):
Well, thanks guys.
Scott, amanda, it is great tobe with you guys.
It's really.
It's really hard to believeit's been 100 episodes.
I mean six years.
A lot has happened in theselast six years.
Amanda Knight (01:25):
It really has.
So let's rewind just a littlebit.
Let's go all the way back to2019.
If you could give us one wordor phrase to describe CRC, then
the CRC of 2019, and one word todescribe us now, what do you
think you'd pick?
Neil Kessler (01:43):
Yeah, good
question.
I think then probably a solid, now probably relentless.
You know, back in 19, we were astrong business, solid
foundation, great people, greatclient outcomes.
But you know, today we'vereally evolved into a relentless
growth machine.
There's simply more urgency, more agility, more of an
(02:05):
ownership type culture.
We're not just reacting to themarket.
We're really shaping it today.
Scott Gordon (02:11):
And this might be
a little bit redundant there,
but what's something that'schanged dramatically and
something that's probably stayedthe same in a good way since
2019?
Yeah, since then.
Neil Kessler (02:21):
I'd say what's
changed is probably our scale
and independence, you know,unaffiliated, independent,
wholesale partner, and you knowthose are two things that have
(02:51):
changed a lot for us.
And what stayed the same is ourculture.
I'd say you know the, you knowwe before me kind of mindset,
the drive to win for our clients, the willingness to hustle,
that hasn't changed one bit.
Scott Gordon (03:06):
Well, and this
podcast is a little different
because normally we talk aboutthe industry in general and
topics and this is all about us,which is kind of interesting to
talk about because we've allbeen with the company for a
little while now.
We've seen these changes.
So CRC has seen its fair changeof curveballs over the years
COVID, rapid expansion, marketshifts so what stands out to you
(03:28):
as one of the biggestchallenges that CRC has
navigated?
Neil Kessler (03:31):
Yeah.
I'd say it's the pandemic,probably no question.
You know, shortly after werecorded that episode, things
changed and we had to completelyrethink how we worked, how we
sold, how we collaborated, andwe had to do it all overnight.
But it also showed howadaptable and resilient our
people are and I think we cameout of it stronger, more
(03:52):
connected and more creative thanever.
Amanda Knight (03:55):
I know the
pandemic, looking back, was what
five years ago now is when itstarted and for some people and
for a lot of folks, it feelslike just yesterday.
But, pandemic or otherwise, howdo you feel like Team CRC, our
people and our culture reallyhelped navigate and get through
(04:15):
challenges like the pandemic?
Neil Kessler (04:17):
Two things to me
grit and teamwork.
Everyone leaned in.
No one waited around to be toldwhat to do and across all of
our businesses, people ralliedand shared a mission to serve
our clients, no matter what.
It was a total team effort andI think that's what helped us
navigate that challenge and willhelp us navigate challenges to
come.
Amanda Knight (04:38):
Looking back,
what are you most proud of as a
leader for CRC over these lastfive or six years?
Neil Kessler (04:45):
Yeah, great
question.
There's a lot to be proud of,and I'd say, probably the thing
I'm the most proud of is really, you know, something that we're
still working on and still doing, which is, you know, shifting
our business, our mindset, ourculture, from kind of a bank
employee to kind of anindependent ownership model, and
for us, that culture shift isreal and it's powerful.
(05:08):
I mean, I believe that whenpeople start thinking like
owners, when they think likeowners about growth, about ROI,
about driving our businessforward, everything changes and
I think our customers can reallyfeel the difference.
Owners move faster, owners takemore accountability.
They look for ways to add evenadditional value every day, and
(05:28):
that's really who we are now.
Scott Gordon (05:30):
And speaking to
CRC's people, who are a huge
part of our story, is there anymoment or achievement that
really speaks to you about thestrength of our team?
Neil Kessler (05:39):
Yeah, I think what
speaks to me about our people
is our producer recruitingstreak that we're on.
We're adding talent at a recordpace and since 19, 2019, since
we had this podcast we've addedalmost 500 new producers.
Wow, yeah, that takes vision, leadership, trust, a whole lot
(05:59):
of follow through.
You know we're really focusedon building the next generation
of CRC.
It's.
What's even better about that,in my opinion, is that most of
those folks had options.
Right, they could have gone toone of our competitors, but they
chose to come to us and I thinkthat really says something.
And for our customers, all ofthis means you know more options
, you know more producers, meansmore talent, more creativity,
(06:23):
more ways to help as we grow.
It really helps our clients win.
It's a real win, win.
Scott Gordon (06:29):
I always use on
the podcast.
I always use the baseballmetaphor.
I say we've got a really deepbench at CRC really deep and
they're all really good at whatthey do.
So let's shift gears to what'snext.
What do you think is next forCRC?
Neil Kessler (06:45):
Yeah, to me, next
is more specialization, more
data, more kind of likecross-business collaboration.
I think the future for us isabout being faster and smarter
and more integrated, and youknow we want to be the partner
of choice for our agents and forour markets.
(07:05):
You know I'm thinking a lotabout tech and AI these days.
Yes, some of it's overhyped, but we've got some pilots
underway that are showing realpromise, and those tools we
build are going to help us, youknow, quote faster, uncover and
deliver insights sooner andreally bring solutions to the
(07:26):
market with an even greaterspeed.
You know we've been ahead ofthe curve when it comes to data
since we started capturingexposure and loss information
back in 2016.
And yeah, that was before itwas trendy and before our
competitors kind of joined theparty, and now we've got more
and even better data.
So the next step is how do wecontinue to evolve to help our
(07:47):
clients win in new, differentand bigger ways?
Amanda Knight (07:52):
Well, it sounds
like we've got a lot of work to
do.
We've got some things in thepipeline, we've got a lot we
need to do, but along with thatwork comes excitement, right.
So what excites you the mostabout this next chapter of
growth, now that we areindependent, now that we are a
pure play wholesaler?
Neil Kessler (08:10):
Yeah, you know.
For me, Amanda, what excites memost is that the playbook isn't
written yet.
That's what's so exciting.
I mean, look back six years ago.
Who would have thought thatthis is where we'd be today?
Amanda Knight (08:23):
Right.
Neil Kessler (08:23):
You know we're
really building something
special and everyone at thecompany has a chance to shape it
.
Our story's kind of justgetting started.
You know we're a company,20-year-old plus, startup in a
lot of ways, and you know somuch has changed in six years,
so much has changed in theselast 18 months.
Amanda Knight (08:42):
Right.
Neil Kessler (08:43):
I just can't wait
to see kind of what's next for
us.
That's what's most exciting tome.
Amanda Knight (08:48):
Absolutely Well.
We're nearing everyone'sfavorite part of every episode
rapid fire.
It's a lightning round where weask a few quick questions and
you answer with whatever popsinto your head first.
So are you ready?
Neil Kessler (09:03):
I'm ready, let's
do it.
Amanda Knight (09:04):
All right.
What is one thing?
Something about your backgroundthat most people probably don't
know.
Neil Kessler (09:12):
Most people
probably don't know that I was a
TV news reporter.
You know not a weatherman.
Not a weatherman, that's a falserumor.
But I was a TV news reporter.
It was a long time ago, rightwhen I was out of college, but
it did help me a lot withcommunication and thinking on my
feet.
I then went to law school andworked in politics and you know
(09:33):
I've had really a lot of.
My career has taught me abouthow to build arguments and think
critically.
So you know it's a strangecombo now that I'm in insurance
but it works.
Scott Gordon (09:45):
That explains a
lot in a good way.
That that that does explain alot?
Sure does, and I can see thatthat tracks Neil.
So your next question is what'ssomething fun you want to check
off your bucket list, traveldestination or an experience, a
weird food?
Neil Kessler (10:02):
You know, for me,
I've never been to Asia or
Australia.
I'd love to go there.
Maybe a family trip over there,a mix of some adventure and
downtime.
I hear those are great placesto visit.
Amanda Knight (10:13):
I don't know.
I did see this could have beenfake news, but I feel like I saw
that Australia has somethingcalled spider season and I'm not
sure that makes Australia forme.
I think Australia might have toleave the bucket list.
Neil Kessler (10:26):
Just go to a
different part of the year, not
during spider season.
I'm sure you can figure outwhen that is.
Amanda Knight (10:31):
I'm pretty sure
all the world's deadliest spider
snakes, whatever live inAustralia.
So you go and you let me knowhow it is.
Neil Kessler (10:38):
Will do.
Amanda Knight (10:40):
Okay, we've saved
the best question for last.
We know you travel a lot inyour role for CRC.
I mean that may be anunderstatement actually, what's
the weirdest thing you've everseen in an airport or the
weirdest experience you've everhad on an airplane or in an
airport?
Neil Kessler (10:58):
Well, honestly and
in a good way, I can tell you
that most of it for the last 20years and I'm on the road every
week in multiple cities most ofit has been pretty boring.
I really haven't had anyone getkicked off a flight or do
something crazy midair.
You've seen the people thatstrip naked on the plane or, you
(11:19):
know, get in a big fight.
I haven't seen much of that.
I've seen some celebrities overthe years, but you know,
probably the best story is onetime I took the wrong suitcase.
So you know, on Southwest, youknow the plane stops and people
get on, people get off right andthen the plane goes on.
Well, the plane stopped inDallas and I got off the flight.
(11:42):
I grabbed the suitcase at thetop.
I thought it was mine.
Turns out it wasn't.
It was a different person'ssuitcase.
That person was actually justgoing on a trip.
I was just getting home for atrip.
So he got to where he was goingto open up his suitcase.
I don't think he was very happy.
Oh no, yeah, it was a bitawkward but we sorted it out.
I sent him some money for histroubles and he was a good sport
(12:04):
about it all.
But I know they say all thetime two bags all look alike.
Check the tag.
Amanda Knight (12:10):
That is a good
lesson in that that's a good
piece of advice for all of us.
Scott Gordon (12:14):
Wow, yeah, were
you short your materials you
needed?
I'm sure you were put out.
I was coming home.
Oh, you were like For me.
Neil Kessler (12:22):
I didn't really
care, but the guy going out
wasn't loving it.
We were definitely differentsizes, that's funny, oh my God.
Scott Gordon (12:30):
Well, thanks for
coming on, Neil.
This was great.
We have had you on for thefirst and now the 100th episode.
I feel like we've come fullcircle.
Neil Kessler (12:38):
Hard to believe.
Amanda Knight (12:39):
And thank you to
everyone who's listened to the
Placing you First podcast overthese 100 episodes.
We're so proud of how far we'vecome and even more excited for
