Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to Podcast Solutions Made Simple.
It's the podcast.
That's all about podcasting.
I'm your host, carl Richards.
You know, in my 25 plus yearsin the broadcast and speaking
world, I've noticed a lot ofoverwhelm when it comes to
podcasting, and I'm here to tellyou it doesn't have to be that
way.
If you're a coach, consultantor other subject matter expert
and the thought of starting apodcast seems too technical, too

(00:25):
confusing, too time consumingor just way out of your reach,
then this is the podcast for you.
On this show, we give you thetools, tips and techniques to
run a kick-ass show and sharestories from people who have
been there, done that and areenjoying massive success with
their own shows.
Oh, and, if you're an existingpodcaster, this show is also for

(00:47):
you.
The mics are up, so let's diveinto today's episode.
And today we're continuing ourconversation about myths,
misconceptions andmisinformation when it comes to
podcasting.
Last week, we were talkingabout money and how the finance
piece always comes into play, and sometimes the reason why
that comes into play first offis because we approach the

(01:09):
podcasting space with thethought that we're going to make
money from it, which is, as wefound out last week, the wrong
intention.
But that's what we want to talkabout today is your intention
when it comes to podcasting.
You know what is the purpose.
Why is it that you want to havea podcast?
And, quite frankly at PodcastSolutions Maine, simple, it's

(01:30):
one of the first things that wetalk about before we start
working with a client is what'sthe purpose of the show?
Why is it that you want to havea show?
What's the reason?
Is it to promote your business?
Is it because you want to bringabout some information about a
social project or something thatyou're passionate about?

(01:53):
What is your why and I know wehear that a lot in business, and
it's the same with podcasting, except maybe a little bit
different because really have tofocus in on the why.
Otherwise, if you don't, or ifyou haven't done any of this
deep dive homework yourself yetfor the reason as to why you're
in business to begin with, it'llbe hard to get your podcast off

(02:14):
the ground.
It won't be impossible, but youreally need to know why you're
going in with a podcast, andwhat quite often happens is when
we're going to workshops andseminars that are being led by
people who are running businessdevelopment organizations.
Really, what they're giving youis a broad spectrum or, in some
cases, they're giving you theirwhy.

(02:36):
They're giving you their reasonwhy they started a podcast.
They're giving you their goals.
They're giving you the outcomesthey hope to get from the
podcast that they've created.
That's not necessarily the samefor you, so you really have to
dive deep here and figure outthe why.

(02:58):
The why will lead you to manyother things related to your
show.
It'll lead to many otheraspects of your business and, by
the way, the reason why youstart your show first off might
change.
So if you come up with the why,or you know your why already
for wanting to start a podcast, you start that podcast.
A year from now, it might becompletely different because

(03:21):
your goals might shift, yourbusiness might shift in a
direction that you didn't expect.
During COVID-19, for example, alot of people had to shift
their businesses, which I'llalmost guarantee you.
They didn't expect to havehappened, but they did so.
Therefore, for all those peoplewho were podcasting during the
pandemic and Before, they had toshift, they had to.

(03:42):
You know, look at thingsdifferently, all right.
So it has to begin with the why.
Okay, it has to begin with thewhy, and it can be a surface why
, but the deeper the why, thebetter your success.
I believe, and in my experiencein working with a number of
clients helping them launchtheir shows, what you're going

(04:03):
to get out of it All right.
So start with why.
I know it sounds like SimonSinek, but but it's true.
Begin with the why in mind.
You really have to have that inyour mind.
So, for me, when I was startingmy speaking of speaking podcast,
it was a podcast all abouthelping people become better
communicators and better leadersIn their community, but also on

(04:25):
stage when they're puttingtheir best face out there, so to
speak.
So it started out about beingthis platform where people could
get information and then ifthey really wanted to do a
deeper dive with me, then theycould do that.
So that was my why.
A lot of you know peoplestruggling with stage fright
speaking, anxiety, not knowinghow to deliver a presentation

(04:47):
and not getting the results thatthey wanted from that.
So I wanted to help people inthat space.
So that was my why.
And then the why got deeper.
Because we started talkingabout communication strategies.
We started talking aboutironically enough, we started
talking about digital marketing.
We started talking aboutpodcasting.
We started talking about.
You know three words, forexample, in business, or three

(05:09):
words, rather, that are killingyour business.
So we brought in a number ofdifferent ideas and we still do
with that podcast, because thewhy is still there and the why
has evolved.
It's now about communicationstrategies in the thought
leadership world, in thecoaching world, in the speaking
world, all right.

(05:29):
So the, the general reason whywe started was to give some
information About where to standon stage.
How do you have a presentation.
Here's the, the signature talksolution.
Here are three words that youshouldn't say when you're
delivering your elevator speech.
All of those things were withinthe first, I would say, 20,
maybe 25 episodes, but afterthat it started to evolve and

(05:51):
it's still evolving, all right,so let's break it down.
What's your why?
If you get on a call with me,I'm going to ask you that, all
right.
So if, after today, you'rethinking, I'm gonna call Carl, I
want to meet with him and findout more about what it is that
his company does, if you don'tknow the answer to why, it's
going to be very hard for us tohelp you, which means it'll be

(06:13):
very hard to move forward, allright.
So we really need to know thewhy.
Why is it that you want apodcast?
What is it about that podcastthat has you going it's time I
need one.
I can tell you why I think youshould have a podcast, but you
need to know that why, all right.
So number one is why.
Number two, again if you'regetting on a call with me, I'm

(06:35):
going to ask you this.
I'm going to say what's yourgoal?
What is it you hope to get fromthis podcast?
What's your goal?
Do you want to get some clientsfrom it?
Is it to educate people?
Is it a little bit of both?
Do you want to bring in otherthought leaders to have a
conversation with them and havethem help you elevate what it is
that you do?
For some people, they're notclear on their goal either,

(06:57):
because they just think I need apodcast, I'm going to interview
a bunch of guests and that'llbe that and it'll make me
successful and I'll be seen asan expert.
The end no, there's a strategyto it.
That's why we begin with thewhy.
Then we move on to what's thegoal of the show.
What do you want to get fromthat?
Because from there we canidentify some things together

(07:21):
that will be part of your launchstrategy to begin with, but
it'll also be part of youroverall marketing strategy.
So, not just in the organicspace, but in the deeper dive
marketing that we would help youwith.
All right, so really think aboutthat.
Think about what's my goal.
What do I want to get from thispodcast?
Is it to be seen as the expert?
Is it to get clients?

(07:42):
Is it to boost my sales?
Is it?
What is it?
What's the goal from the show?
And again, I could tell you, Ican give you some strategies and
I can also share with you whatI think your podcast, or any
podcast, should be, but that'snot necessarily going to
identify what your ultimate goalis.
All right, so why?
What's your goal?

(08:03):
And then, what's the outcomeyou want?
Right, and I know you'rethinking well goal and outcome.
They're the same, aren't they?
They can be, but they can bequite different.
If your goal is to educate yourprospects and get in front of
more of your prospects, what doyou want that outcome to be?
Do you want them to be going toyour website?
Do you want them to sign up foran event?

(08:23):
Do you want them to tap into afree book, an e-book or maybe a
book that you've just published.
So the why, or the outcome, rather, is something that you
have to think about as well.
So the goal is one thing what'sthe outcome?
A lot of people now willleverage their podcast as a not

(08:43):
just a marketing platform, but alead magnet.
They'll say here's my podcast, here's some information, and go
to my website, get the freedownload.
And, by the way, while you'rethere, I've got this event
coming up.
If you want to do a deeper diveor sign up for an event, you
can do a deeper dive or sign upfor that.
All right.
So, but that's the outcome youwant.
If you want people to come toyou, you want people to be see

(09:08):
you as the expert, you need toknow what you want that outcome
to be, which means you need todrive the bus, as I like to say,
through your whole conversation, every time you're cranking out
a podcast episode.
And this is where a lot ofpodcasters fall short.
They fall short with the why.
Yes, they don't necessarilyknow their goal, but then they

(09:30):
don't know what the outcomeshould be.
I have heard so many podcasts.
When you get to the end, it'sthanks so much, we'll see you
next week.
Well, is that getting you theoutcome, your desired outcome,
from that episode, from the showin general?
If you don't give people theroadmap, a detailed roadmap of

(09:52):
where you want them to go withthis, you won't achieve that
outcome.
It's sort of like if I gave youdirections to my house but
didn't give you the last oh, Idon't know the last two or three
directions that actuallybrought you here.
If I just let you try andfigure it out on your own,
you're probably not going to dothat, which means you'll

(10:13):
probably not get to my house, which means you'll probably not
meet me at my house.
And if we did that every singleweek in a podcast episode and I
didn't give you a clear outcome, I didn't give you the next
step, I didn't give you the callto action.
Guess what?
You wouldn't be called toaction, right, you wouldn't do

(10:36):
anything, you wouldn't sign upfor something and, by the way,
simply just saying go to mywebsite, it's all there.
That's an easy way out.
What you want to do is have adetailed solution for people, or
a roadmap that gets them towhere they need to be.
So you could say something likeall the information is on my

(10:57):
website that information, by theway, is in the show notes.
Also in the show notes, if yougo over there right now, is a
list to the next event that I'mhosting, which is coming up
November the 16th.
I actually do have an eventcoming up November the 16th and,
by the way, if you're hearingthis post, november the 16th, we
host events on a regular basis.
So if you missed thatparticular event, there's others
you can tap into.
But I'm giving you the detailedinformation.

(11:19):
I'm telling you where it is.
I'm going to post those linksin the show notes.
I'm going to do all of thatbecause the outcome I want is I
want you to come and join me onthis journey.
If I don't give you thatinformation, regardless of what
it is, you won't do it.
And this is where, whenindividuals are hosting webinars

(11:41):
and saying you should have apodcast, here's the why behind
it, they're not giving you thisdetail, they're not sharing with
you.
You need to know your why.
They're not saying what's thegoal.
They're not saying, well, what's the desired outcome you
want for the entire show?
What's, what is it you want todo with this?
They're not saying that.
They're saying you can do itfor free.
Here's some information you canset up here.
You can do this and, by the wayit works for me, you should do

(12:03):
it too.
That's generally theinformation that's going out
there.
This is a personalized journey, because the journey you're
going to take your prospectsthrough and maybe even your
existing clients will bedifferent from the other person
who's maybe viewed as yourcompetitor.
I hope this has been helpful.
If you have a question, drop mean email and go to ask Carl at

(12:26):
CarlSpeaksca.
You can also go over to theshow notes, by the way, where
there's the link to our website.
That is there Also.
There's something else I do wantyou to check out, because I
already alluded to it, but weare hosting a podcast jumpstart
bootcamp, and I want to tell youjust a little bit about this
event.
We'll be hosting them on aregular basis.
The next one coming up, though.
What we're doing is we'rewalking people through the steps

(12:47):
that they're going to take, including identifying some of
what we talked about today, sowe're going to give you some
time to work on your why.
We'll give you some time towork on the goal.
We'll give you some time to youknow, explore what you want the
outcome to be from your show.
We'll also provide differentmodels for you to use for your
podcast.
We'll give you some templatesto help you create your first

(13:09):
