Tracy Wilson (00:00):
Hey, good morning
everybody, and welcome to
another episode of the UnlockedShow.
I'm your host, tracey Wilson.
In today's episode, I want totalk about being a guest on
other people's podcasts, and forsome of you, you might have
been sitting around thinking, gosh, I need to get the word out
about my business.
And I was looking through myFacebook just this morning,
actually, and I saw some reallygood friends of mine who have
opened up new businesses in NewZealand actually, and they were
(00:22):
talking about what they'rehaving to do to get people to
come into their businesses, andit dawned on me that you know
what?
We've got this amazing tool atour fingertips that we can use
on the regular, which is eitherdoing live shows like this,
because it's pretty darn simplewhen you know the tools, the
resources that you need and howto do it and then, secondly, how
(00:45):
to be a guest on other people'spodcasts is a fantastic way of
being able to get your skills, your expertise and your
knowledge out to a much wideraudience, and even your products
and your services.
If you want to jump on tovarious different podcasts and
start talking about those Now.
If you think about it, nowadaysthere are podcasts on all kinds
(01:05):
of topics.
If you think you're in abusiness that maybe a podcast is
not right for you, think again.
Go and have a bit of a look inApple Podcasts or Stitcher or
any of those places, and you'llfind podcasts on all kinds of
topics.
That being said, that providesa huge amount of opportunity for
you guys to jump in and starttalking about your skills, your
(01:29):
expertise and your products.
Do you necessarily have to gothe full hog and create your own
podcast or your own show likethis?
No, you don't.
You can start out by simplybeing a guest on other people's
podcasts.
So make it really easy onyourself now to do this.
I often get people asking me onyourself Now to do this.
I often get people asking mewhat do I need to do?
How do I need to prepare myself?
(01:50):
Put myself in the best position?
There are over 450,000 podcasts.
There are an enormous amount ofpodcasts and new ones coming to
your ears on the regular.
So, that being said, when you'vemade the decision to say, hey,
(02:10):
I actually am ready.
I want to be a guest on otherpeople's podcasts, what do I
need to do?
What other things do I need todo to prepare myself to be a
guest?
The first one I've just coveredit is making the mental shift
that you are going to be a guest.
The first one I've just coveredit is making the mental shift
that you are going to be a gueston other people's podcasts.
So you need to make that mentalshift and get yourself mentally
(02:31):
prepared to be a guest on otherpeople's podcasts.
The next thing you want to thinkabout is, if you are going to
be a guest on other people'spodcasts, why do you actually
want to do that?
What's the purpose of doing it?
And a lot of people would say,as I just mentioned at the
beginning, you might be thinkinghow do I get more information
out about my products and myservices?
(02:53):
So the immediate question, theimmediate thing that most people
think of when I ask them thisquestion, is I want to try and
sell more of my stuff, and thatmight sound really obvious, but
it's actually an outcome ofactually being on the show and
if you lead with value, thesales and the opportunities will
come.
So the very first thing, youactually want to do.
(03:15):
So, even though this is a bitof a what do you call it?
A question that I'm going to, arhetorical question that I'm
going to answer for you and itis the reason we want to do it.
It is that we can add value toother people's lives and to
other people's shows.
That's our very first reason wewant to do it.
If you come at it from an angleof I want to go in there and I
want to try and sell, thenyou're probably not going to
(03:36):
find yourself on very manypodcasts, because a lot of
podcasts hosts won't enjoy thattype of angle and, secondly,
people get sick of listening tothat sell mentality all the time
.
So you want to come at it froma point of view of you're
wanting to give as much as youpossibly can and add value to
both the host and adding valueto their listeners.
(03:56):
There's an interesting thingthat we talk about in terms of
whether or not you want to be ahost of your own show or you
want to be a guest on somebodyelse's show, and we often say
that being a host.
So creating your own show likethis really gives you the
opportunity to showcase yourexpertise.
It positions you well, itcreates influence and authority.
(04:20):
So if you're wanting to elevateyour influence and authority,
then you would create your ownlive show or your own podcast,
you'd be the host of that.
When you're being a guest onother people's shows, the great
thing about that is you'reactually expanding your networks
.
So, if you think about for amoment, that host has spent a
lot of time building theirexpertise, building their
(04:42):
influence and their authorityand they've created an audience
for themselves.
They're now giving you theopportunity to reach that
audience.
So, instead of you having towork very hard to try and build
up an audience yourself, youhave the opportunity to be able
to add value to that host'saudience and actually tap into
(05:05):
and be able to reach thataudience really easily, because
the host has done a lot of thehard yards and the legwork for
you.
They've done a lot of the workin setting up the show and the
podcast behind the scenes.
They'll do a lot of the work interms of promoting the show
before and after you are theguest on the show.
So you want to make sure thatwhen you are appearing on this
(05:27):
show, that you've doneeverything you possibly can to
prepare as well as you possiblycan, a to get yourself booked on
a show and then, secondly, sothat you can actually show up
and, like I said, lead withvalue and be prepared enough
that you're able to hold areally good conversation.
So you want to understand whoour audience is.
(05:49):
So, before you even get youknow, you go down the rabbit
hole of whose podcast should Ibe on.
You want to understand veryclearly who is it that you are
trying to help change your life?
Who are you trying to inform?
Who are you trying to work with?
Who are you trying to influence?
You want you trying to workwith.
Who are you trying to influence?
You want to really understandthat, because there's no point
in being on other people'spodcasts that are in a totally
(06:12):
that attract a completelydifferent audience than that
that you are looking to serve.
So that's probably the veryfirst thing you want to start
considering too.
And then you also want to makesure that.
Are you ready to have being aguest on other people's podcasts
as part of your ongoingmarketing strategy?
And I just want to say thatagain as part of your ongoing
(06:33):
marketing strategy?
So if you're not ready, ifyou're dabbling in it and you're
going to do a few here and afew there, that's okay, but it's
probably not likely to be partof your long-term marketing
strategy.
So this is very much aconscious decision to be a guest
on other people's show and bedoing that on a regular basis.
The next thing you want to thinkabout is what is your
(06:56):
availability?
Do you have the time to be ableto do this?
And, if you do, what days ofthe weeks or what times are you
going to make yourself available?
Because, again, you don't wantto go out starting to pitch
yourself to various differentpodcasts only to find out that
in your time zone that it mightbe 3am or 2am in the morning.
That's totally okay if you'reprepared to get up at that hour
(07:18):
of the morning, but if you'renot, you want to make sure that
you're actually looking forpodcasts that will either air
record or air or record at atime that is suitable to you and
a reasonable hour of the day, because you don't want to be
waking up in the middle of thenight trying to put your best
foot forward and I've done thata number of times and been able
(07:39):
to pull it off but you don'twant to be doing that on the
regular.
The next thing you want to thinkabout is your environment.
Okay, and a lot of people don'toften think about this, and I
heard one of the guests that Ihad on my show.
I think it was last week and hewas talking about how he had a
guest come onto his show andthere was a lot of noise, there
was a lot of stuff going on inthe background and he was trying
(08:00):
to determine where is thisperson.
In this case, he was doing apodcast it was audio only and
only to find out that the personwas rushing.
They were stuck in traffic Onlyto find out that the person was
rushing.
They were stuck in traffic andthey were trying to be the guest
on a podcast from their car andit's really difficult for the
host, as well as the personbeing the guest, to try and
(08:22):
again put their best footforward and be present in that
podcast if they are distractedand trying to drive.
And, as we now know, if you'rein Australia you get caught
doing that sort of stuff You'rein for a very big fine.
So that's probably the caseright around the world.
So just be mindful of that.
Make sure that you are prepared, that you've got the right
environment set up.
(08:43):
So when I'm talking aboutenvironment, you want to make
sure that you've got a place inyour house.
So in my house.
I've got my own little office, want to make sure that you've
got a place in your house.
So in my house I've got my ownlittle office.
It's at the back of my house,it's my place.
This is where I come to do mywork and my shows, and I'm able
to do it without a lot ofinterruptions.
People are not walking past menot now anyway, because I've
(09:04):
solved that problem and thosesorts of things.
So you want to make sure thatyou've got the right sort of
environment.
The other thing that you want tothink about is your background.
So do you have to have anythingfancy?
Do you have to go out and buyyourself this really fancy
background?
No, you don't.
You might just want to put anice bookcase in the background,
some flowers, a nice color onthe wall.
Whatever it is that you'regoing to do, just make sure that
(09:24):
it's well organized in the back, because, again, you might
think that's quite trivial, butwhen, particularly if you're
doing a live show or a videoshow, what's going on in the
background can be extremelydistracting and can take away
from what you are speaking about.
So you just want to make surethat that is the case.
Sometimes it can add to thehumor of the show.
(09:46):
I can recall having a senatorfrom the United States actually
on one of my shows a few monthsback and it was quite funny
because, as she was trying to beall very professional, in the
background was the cleaner doingthe cleaning for the night and
he obviously realized that therewas something going on and did
a little bit of a funny littledance in the background.
So we thought that was a bithilarious.
(10:07):
But anyway, those sorts ofthings can be distracting, but
that just goes to show the sortof stuff that gets noticed even
though it's in the background ofyour set.
The other is making sure thatyou've got a good microphone,
even some headset One of thethings that was a bit funny
someone's having a bit of achuckle here One of the things
that a lot of people don't doand again, this might sound
(10:29):
really simple, but it's evenputting on a pair of earbuds or
a headset on when you're doingeither a live show or doing a
podcast, because it reduces theamount of echo.
So you want to make sure thatyou do that and you're not
getting any feedback from any ofyour equipment by utilizing
(10:50):
having a headset on, and it canbe just something as simple as
plugging in the earbuds fromyour phone so that you're not
getting that feedback.
And another little tip that Iwant to give you guys is
background noise.
So if you're having trouble andwhat you're finding is that
when you're doing recordingsyou're getting a lot of
background noise, there'sactually an application that you
(11:10):
can download.
It's a Chrome app and it'scalled CRISP K-R-I-S-P CRISP.
So you can download that and itreally helps to reduce the
background noise If you're usingrecording equipment or
recording software such asStreamYard.
Streamyard does a fantastic jobof being able to eliminate a
lot of the background noise, butalso the microphone that you
(11:32):
use will will help in that casetoo.
So I've covered microphone, yourbackground.
I've covered off the use of aheadset, so it might sound.
I don't use this.
Obviously you're seeing me havethe little what do you call
this?
The voice handle or whateveryou want to call it on my
headset.
Obviously I'm not using thatright now.
I use this for other purposes, but I certainly use it for the
(11:52):
sound so that it's not comingback through my computer and
you're not hearing that echo.
Okay, so now we've covered offsome of the fundamental things.
The next things you want tostart thinking about is your
website.
So have you got your website upto scratch?
Is it up to date with relevantand current information?
(12:12):
The number of times that I seepeople either not having a
website, so not having their ownpersonal brand of websites If
you're going to be on otherpeople's podcasts, they're going
to be looking you up I canguarantee that and you want to
make sure that you've got yourwebsites looking nice, that
you've got the right sort ofinformation on there and it's in
alignment with what you'regoing to be speaking about.
(12:33):
You don't have a bakery andthen, all of a sudden, you're
speaking about, I don't know,watches.
It's a crazy example there, butyou get my drift.
So you want to make sure thatyou're in alignment with that
and when you're providing themwith the links to your website
and to your social profiles, that it all makes sense that
they can look at that and say, yeah, she talks about that on
(12:54):
the regular.
She must be an expert at it.
The other thing that you want todo is you want to make sure
that you've got your media kitready to go Now.
This is probably the placewhere a lot of people get stuck
because it requires you to writeabout yourself, and if you're
like most people don't like todo that and in most cases we
(13:14):
actually humble things down andin this case, these are the
times on your website and inyour other platforms you've got
to really brag about yourself.
That's the times where you'vegot to pull out that inner
bragger and start talking aboutall the great things that you do
, but you want to do it verysuccinctly and there's a way in
which you do it to create yourmedia sheet, or also known as a
(13:37):
one sheet or media kit.
So what do you need to have inthis media kit?
Very simple I'm going to giveyou guys a tool today that you
can go, you can download, andI'm going to give you a document
which runs through everythingthat you should have on your
media kit and then also atemplate.
So it's just a plug, fill inthe gaps, plug and play kind of
(13:57):
template that you can use.
That will help you get yourmedia sheet up to date and get
you ready so that you can be anamazing guest on other people's
podcasts.
So what sort of stuff do youneed to have on there?
Like I said, it's one sheet, soyou don't have loads and loads
of room to be able to write lotsof stuff.
So it's very succinct.
First thing you want to talkabout is who are you?
(14:18):
What about you?
Why should they have you ontheir show?
What makes you so special?
What makes you qualified tospeak about what you're going to
be speaking about?
And at the top, you might evenwant to have some form of
tagline, right?
So, again, in the template thatI provide you and in the
information I give you when yougo and download it, it's got a
(14:38):
lot more tools and will walk youthrough how to do this very
simply.
The next thing you want to dois I always think it's nice to
have your mission on there.
What are you trying to do?
What changes is it that you aretrying to create in this world?
Why are you doing what you do?
So, a little few sentences, aparagraph about your mission is
(14:58):
always nice to have on there.
The next thing that you want tostart thinking about is you want
to get together at least one tosix speaking topics right, so
you might speak about.
You have a particular genrethat you talk about.
So, for example, the Unlockedshow right, so you might speak
about.
You have a particular genrethat you talk about, so, for
example, the Unlock Show, right?
So I talk about creating youronline business.
I talk about podcasting andcreating your own show.
(15:20):
I talk about elevating thatwith influence and authority by
creating your own book.
So there's three differentthings that I talk about, but
they're all in alignment, all inthe same category of creating a
freedom-based lifestyle.
So, if you can think about itfrom that perspective, what is
it that you do?
And I know my good friend, vicky Helm, whenever she's doing
(15:41):
this, when she's writing books, she talks about the nutshell
message.
What do you do?
Pull it all together, put it ina nutshell and allow your
potential person who's going tobe booking you to understand
what it is that you do reallyquickly.
So put together one to sixspeaking topics Makes it super
(16:01):
simple for the host to actuallyget you booked, but then also to
come up with a subject thatthey are going to get.
The more shows you are likelyto be on Aside from, you must
(16:23):
get on there and do a reallygood job, of course.
So this is about getting bookedin the first instance.
So make it really easy on thebooking agent and also the show
host by providing them withthese things.
So one to six topics that youcan speak on.
The next you want to think aboutis do you have frameworks,
methods or formulas?
(16:43):
So, if you haven't alreadycreated these, I talk about
these a lot, with my studentscoming up with proprietary
formulas, methods and frameworks, because when you can create
that, it makes it really simple,A for you to be able to teach
it, but, secondly, for you to beable to recall the information
and be able to speak about itagain easily.
For you to be able to recallthe information and be able to
speak about it again easily andyou'll hear me talk a lot about
(17:05):
frameworks, the methods andformulas because they thread
throughout all of those threethings that I've spoken about
how to create your onlineprograms, how to create your own
show, how to create your ownbooks.
They get threaded throughoutall three of those things.
So that's super important.
So just really take a moment tothink about those.
How do you make somethingproprietary?
(17:26):
You create your own specialformula, your own method and
your own frameworks, right?
So you want to make sure thatyou've got those, because it
makes it easy again for you tobe able to talk about those
Makes them also a little bitintriguing.
People are interested.
If I said to you, hey, do youwant to hear about the ACE
method or do you know what theACE method is?
Most people would say, no, Idon't know what that is, but I'm
(17:51):
intrigued.
What is the ACE method?
And so then that gives you theopening to be able to continue
to chat and talk about that andcontinue to add value.
Then you want to also thinkabout 10 questions that you
would be ready to answer.
So if a show host was to ask youquestions and what this
actually does for you guys is itactually puts you in the
driver's seat, so no longer areyou sitting.
(18:12):
So you can imagine that, andI'm imagining this.
I'm taking myself back to thefirst few times that I did a
podcast and I didn't have all ofthese things.
I just had come have me on yourshow.
Maybe people knew about me andwanted to have me, but I didn't
really know what they were goingto ask me.
So what happens?
The nerves start happeningbecause you're not sure if
you're going to be able toanswer the questions that they
(18:33):
pose to you.
You're not sure if you're goingto say and do the right thing
right.
So your anxiety levels ofanxieties tend to rise.
What you want to do to ensureto help yourself out a little
bit is to actually pre-preparethe questions and provide them
to your show host.
So come up with one to tenquestions again that are in
(18:54):
alignment with the topics thatyou are speaking about.
Come up with one to tenquestions that you would be
ready to answer at a blink of aneye.
So if somebody asked you thatquestion, you could answer it
very easily and potentiallyyou've even got a story that
goes with it, because storiesare also important.
So you don't need to providethe show host with the stories
(19:17):
prior to you being booked on theshow, but you want to have
those stories up your sleeve.
So they might be, it could be astory, something that's
happened to you in the past, itmight be an analogy, it could be
something that's happened tosomebody else, but something
that enables you to create astory around the subject or the
question that is being asked.
(19:39):
So just have a bit of a thinkabout those two and jot them
down, so underneath each of yourquestions again, not giving
these stories to your, to thatbooking agent or to the host
before the show, but you'recertainly writing them down so
that you could recall themreally quickly and easily if you
had to.
And then you also want to startthinking about are there other
(20:00):
tools and resources that youcould provide the viewers and
the listeners of the shows thatyou are appearing on?
Why is this important One?
You probably got some stuffthat you would like to provide,
but, secondly, it also gives youan opportunity to be able to,
let's say, make a big switch ofthe audience.
So where, again, where you'releading with value, you're not
(20:23):
selling anything, but what youare doing is you're providing
additional value by way ofsaying, hey, I've got a free
gift, or here's a free cheatsheet, or something that would
be useful for them again inalignment with what you've just
spoken about.
And that way for them again inalignment with what you've just
spoken about, and that way, that's going to send traffic to
(20:44):
your website and or your landingpages, and it gives them an
opportunity to opt in to whatyou're speaking about.
So, just as I've just spokenabout today, as I was going
through this, often, as I'mpreparing for these shows, I get
loads and loads of ideas.
And as I was preparing for this,I'm like there's a couple of
things that I think would besuper useful for anybody who's
interested in being a guest onother people's shows, one of
(21:07):
which I already had prepared.
I've had it for a while.
It's something that I provideto people on the regular.
You can get it on my website bygoing to tracymwilsoncom.
I'm also going to give it toyou here there is, so I'm just
going to pop this up on thescreen.
So if you go to tracymwilsoncom, forward, slash speakers, dash
kit, dash template that willactually give you a little
(21:29):
booklet and a guide and it willwalk you through how to get
yourself prepared, and then itwill also provide you with that
template that I mentioned alittle bit earlier.
But as I was preparing fortoday's show, it dawned on me
that one of the things thatwould also be super useful would
be a checklist.
So I'm going to prepare thatchecklist I'm almost done with
it, because I only thought of itsort of 10 minutes before the
(21:51):
show and I'll make sure that itgets popped into the description
or the show notes for today, sothat you guys, too, can go away
and grab that checklist.
Make sure that you've coveredall of the things before you get
yourself onto the speakingcircuit and start appearing on
other people's shows so that youcan get booked really quickly.
(22:11):
Before I jump off today, I wantto leave you with a couple of
really awesome tools.
So, if you are thinking aboutdoing this first thing you want
to do, go and download those twofreebies that I'm giving you
guys today and keep your eyespeeled for the checklist.
But then head on over topodmatchcom.
Again, I'll put the link intothe show notes today.
(22:33):
Head on over there because youcan find some amazing guests to
be on your show and if to be onyour show if you're going to be
a show host.
But equally, you can find someamazing guests to be on your
show and if to be on your showif you're going to be a show
host.
But equally, you can find someamazing shows for you to appear
on as a guest.
Also, you can go to a platformcalled audreyio.
Go and have a look there andyou will again find some amazing
(22:55):
shows that you may find areuseful for you and that so you
have some great synergy andalignment with and you want to
appear on their show because youthink that you can add some
value.
So, that being said, today, guys, I'm going to say thanks very
much for joining me.
It's a quick show today, but Ihope that I've covered a whole
lot of stuff today, but I hopeyou found this really useful.
(23:15):
I hope you go away and you grabthose couple of freebies that
I've created for you, becausethey really will help you in
getting prepared to be on otherpeople's shows.
And if you want to take thisfurther and you want to
obviously create your own show, you can reach out to me and we
can have a bit of a chat abouthow we make that happen.
Go and live your life unlocked.
Go and unlock that inner showhost or show guest that's
(23:37):
sitting inside of you, becausepeople are waiting for you to be
a guest on their shows.
