AED je zařízení, které může zachránit život při náhlé zástavě dýchaní a cévního oběhu. Je snadno použitelný i pro laiky a je navržen tak, aby poskytoval jednoduché pokyny k obnovení srdečního rytmu elektrickým výbojem.
V rámci poskytování první pomoci by se po AED mělo sáhnout okamžitě, jakmile se zjistí, že postižený nemá normální dýchání a nereaguje. Legislativa týkající se povinnosti zaměstnavatele umístit AED v podniku se liší podle regionu. V České republice a na Slovensku není dosud povinnost mít AED na pracovišti univerzální, ale některé firmy a instituce jej již zavedly z vlastní iniciativy.
Evropská rada pro resuscitaci doporučuje dostupnost AED na místech s vysokou koncentrací lidí, jako jsou nákupní centra, sportovní zařízení a pracoviště s více zaměstnanci.
