Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome back to
another episode of Pops and Son
Conversations.
It is I, son, your host today, javin, also known as Check3Times
.
So this pod is going to be alittle different again.
All right, pops isn't in thestudio with me, but don't worry,
he's doing great, he's doingfine.
(00:29):
The man just works, you knowwhat I'm saying.
So he's filming right now, soI'm taking the reins of this
episode.
Another solo episode.
I got some good feedback on thelast one, so I thought, hey,
man, let's hop right back intoit.
You know I want to do somethinga little different this time,
(00:53):
though.
I know the last one.
I talked about Juneteenth andkind of gave y'all some info on
that, but with it being, youknow, the middle of the year, I
wanted to kind of use thispodcast, this episode to you
(01:13):
know, dive a little bit deeperinto some personal reflections.
You know it's just me and youright now, you know.
So we're going to do this.
We're going to kind of do thispodcast together.
You know, maybe you'll get someinsight from this one, or
you'll have a revelation orsomething like that.
That's the main goal for thisone, just like a little
(01:34):
heart-to-heart with ourselves.
You know what I mean.
So it might get a little deep, but that's okay.
One thing about Pops and Sonconversations is it's always
going to be real and it's alwaysgoing to be raw.
You know what I'm saying.
It's nothing that that we tryto fabricate or orchestrate or
(01:55):
you know, it's all just comingstraight from the heart and
that's the best way to do it.
You know what I'm saying.
That's, that's the best way todo it.
You know what I'm saying.
That's that's the best way todo it.
So, uh, you know, we smack dabin the middle of the year and,
uh, around this time for me, youknow, july is always like that.
It's like that check-in point,that checkpoint.
(02:17):
For me, you know it, it marksthat, that's that mid-year mark.
And as somebody who talks a lotabout personal development,
growth, entrepreneurship andrelationships and all these
things, I felt like it was onlyright to take stock and see
(02:40):
where I am since January, sincethe beginning of the year.
You know what I mean.
And, like I said, we could kindof do this journey together,
because I think it's importantfor everybody to have those
moments of reflection where youkind of just take a little step
back and say you know, how faralong am I, as far as the things
I said I wanted to getaccomplished, the things that I
(03:03):
still want to get accomplished, like, do I still have the same
determination?
Do I need to check myself, pinch myself and realize it's
not a dream, it's real life andwe got to make it happen?
This is going to be thatpodcast, this is going to be
that episode for everybody thatjust needs that extra little
push right now.
Right, because I know I need it.
Y'all know, sometimes there's asaying that life be lifin' right
(03:29):
, and it's so true.
It's so true.
We go through things in lifeand sometimes we just got to,
like they say, get back on thehorse, get back on the saddle.
So, with that being said, I gota few questions for myself and
for you.
You know, this is your time toalso think and reflect.
Like, what's been new in yourlife since the start of the year
(03:51):
?
What career goals have youaccomplished in the last six
months?
Right For me, I'm like have mypriorities shifted since the
start of the year?
If so, why?
You know, these are the kind ofquestions I've been asking
myself.
You know, what problems have Ifaced in pursuing my goals and
(04:12):
how did I overcome them and, honestly, I think that exercise
is valuable for anybody, notjust me.
So I'll go into a little bit ofbackground.
You knowall know Check ThreeTimes, three Times Magazine
that's my brand, and we havebeen doing a lot since January.
(04:34):
I'm actually super proud of thegrowth of the online
publication.
If you guys haven't had achance to check that out, simply
just go to check3timescom.
It's real simple.
Just spell it out.
You'll see there the digitalplatform where I host all the
articles, all the interviewsthat I've done with different
(04:57):
creative people, all the opinionpieces I've written, just about
things that I'm interested inor that I have an opinion on.
I don't really classify myselfas the most opinionated person.
I'm pretty easy to get alongwith and go with the flow, but
(05:17):
there are a few things that Isee and I'm like somebody should
say something about that.
So there's some some articleson there.
I won't, um, you know, delvetoo deep into it, cause I really
want you guys to kind of go andexplore for yourselves.
Um, but this year I actuallygot the uh, the official website
(05:39):
set up.
Um, so that was a big milestoneeverything self-hosted, the
template, everything designed byme.
So when I say it's anindependent publication.
It's really really that I'vewritten most of the articles
myself and as time has wentalong, I've been talking to
(06:03):
different people and kind ofgetting some, some contributors,
but mostly it's been me.
You know, it's mostly been me.
So that's one of the thingsthat I could say.
Like this year I killed that.
You know, I had that goal setup.
I wanted to make sure that thebrand was solid.
I wanted to make sure that thebrand was solid and I had a good
(06:27):
you know, some some goodinterviews under my belt to
really solidify the audience.
So you know, I got my emaillist going.
If you haven't subscribed, hey, everything is there, but you
already know that we preach thatsubscription all day.
So if you ain't subscribed yet,why aren't you?
Why aren't you subscribed tothe Patreon?
(06:53):
Why aren't you subscribed tothe Three Times Magazine
newsletter?
It makes no sense, right, god?
Throw that shameless plug inthere.
But at any rate, yeah, sothat's something that you know,
that's something I'm proud ofmyself for Also.
And the content creation contentcreation has seen a great
uptick since the beginning ofthe year.
(07:14):
I'm getting more creative withit, thinking of different ways
to, you know, just kind ofincorporate things and throw my
little sauce on it.
You know a lot of people don'ttell you.
You know content creation isnot easy.
It's not easy trying to come upwith something every day or the
week.
(07:34):
Sometimes you can get burnedout.
Sometimes you I also sufferfrom hey, I'll make it, and I'm
like, nah, this ain't even Idon't like it, so I'll trash it.
So I want to encourage anybodythat's also going through that
content creation journey.
The best thing that you coulddo is just to put it out.
(07:55):
You know what I mean.
You put it out and it's not thelast thing that you're ever
going to put out, so you can'tlet it live forever, right?
If you put it out and it's notthe best, all right, just go
harder next time.
Like, you have a millionchances, right, and you want to
(08:16):
take all of them.
You don't want to miss anychance to express yourself or be
creative, because you neverknow when the time is going to
come that you can't expressyourself or you can't be
creative in the way that youonce were.
So I think it's super importantfor us to stop being so hard on
ourselves, right, check in withyourself, say you're good,
(08:38):
that's it.
You know, those affirmations goa long way.
You are good and nobody couldtell you anything different,
right?
So, yeah, that's me.
Those are just a couple ofthings.
But I also ask myself you know, like, what has shifted?
(08:58):
You know what's shifted?
I think that my focus has beena lot more on just networking.
You know, I definitely couldsay that my networking skills
have vastly improved.
You know, I can't even lieabout that, and I want to give
(09:22):
myself some credit there too.
I don't think I give myselfenough credit, and if I'm saying
that, then I know somebodythat's listening to this podcast
right now probably doesn't givethemselves enough credit.
And if I'm saying that, then Iknow somebody that's listening
to this podcast right nowprobably doesn't give themselves
enough credit either.
So, again, this is your moment.
Think about how you shiftedthings around.
(09:43):
Think about what you've done toincrease productivity, to
increase creativity, to increaseyour networking output.
Like, let's put it on frontstreet.
Let's not keep on focusing onwhat we have left undone.
Let's focus on the things thatwe have done, and the things
that we've done a great job atright, not just things that we
(10:06):
got.
Oh yeah, we did that.
No, we do spectacular thingsevery day, every week, every
month.
You know we just don't alwaysgive ourselves enough credit for
it.
So, yeah, my networking is hey,I'm not going to lie you know
I've been putting the work in onthe phones.
I've been putting the work inon the phones not just, you know
(10:28):
, calling, but also, you know, networking is getting out into
these different events andreally just getting in people's
face and letting them know whatyou're about, but also finding
out what they're about as well.
You know networking is two-waystreet.
You know you have to be a value, but you also want to find
value.
So it's one of the greatestconnections when you can find
(10:54):
that symbiotic relationship.
Is that it?
I think that's right.
Yeah, that's the symbioticrelationship where you both can
feed off each other.
You both gain.
It's not just one that's takenfrom the other, which is the
parasitic relationship, right?
I remember a little bit ofbiology.
(11:19):
I think that's biology, at anyrate.
Another question is have yourpriorities changed right?
Are you still chasing thethings that you were six months
ago?
For me, nothing has changed,right?
I'm still dead set, focused onthe mission.
I'm focused on what I need toget accomplished by the end of
the year.
Like I looked and you know it'scrazy too, even though Pops
(11:41):
isn't in this episode.
One of the things that he didthat was so dope.
He sent me a message you knowwhat I'm saying Just like a
mid-year check-in, like, hey,son, what's going on, how you
doing?
I'm just sending this, you knowwhat I'm saying, so you can
have it on record.
And you know, he basically justsent me some encouragement and
(12:05):
sent me, you know, just kind oflike some affirmations and just
reminding me, like you know, what the goal is, what the
mission is, and so that was, that was, that was super helpful
and it and it and it really, and I and I needed it.
You know what I mean.
I needed that, that reminder tosay, yo, yeah, we, we made a
(12:26):
year.
Maybe you didn't reach, youhaven't reached all the goals
yet, but it's halftime, like youcould still win the game, you
could still come out on top.
So you know, as we kind of lookat these different goals that
(12:46):
we set for ourselves and we'reconstantly chasing them
throughout the year, trying toadhere to every little detail
that's going to make that goaland achievement impossible, we
got to remember that we stillhave to take time for our
(13:08):
self-care and our mental health.
You know what I'm saying.
So that's a big part about ittoo.
That's a big part about it too.
Yeah, we grind, we do what wegot to do, we chasing these
goals.
But don't lose too much sleep.
Rest is never a waste, and I'mgoing to get to more about that
(13:28):
later on, but I want to finishthis topic.
So are you still chasing thesame things you were six months
ago?
Ask yourself that Are you stillchasing the same things six
months ago?
Has it switched up?
How are you navigating that?
You know what I mean.
I know for me, like I said,it's just been one target the
whole way through and I'm makingsure that everything is all
(13:56):
lined up and it's comingtogether beautifully.
Pops has been such a majorinfluence.
You know what I'm saying.
I even ask myself sometimes howwould Pops react to my progress
this year?
You know I don't want to saythat I actually, you know I'll
(14:18):
go ahead and say because I feellike, I feel like as sons.
Let me talk to the sons herefor a little minute.
Right, it's just us.
You know why am I even frontingLike?
You know, it's sons listeningto this right now.
So, suns, you know we try to hitthat bar for our pops, right.
(14:39):
You know we don't want to letpops down, we want to make them
proud and you know we don't wantto end up like, you know, a
screw up.
You know you want to be.
You know, just having thatsuccess and having that, you
know, whatever it is that willmake your pops proud.
(14:59):
And you know, a lot of times Ifeel like that's pressure for us
, for us sons.
You know what I'm saying and itmight not even be implied, like
it might not even be pressed byour fathers, impressed by our
fathers, but it's just one ofthose innate things that we just
kind of have in us, that wejust kind of want to impress our
(15:20):
pops and make them proud.
So think about that.
You know what I'm saying.
Think about how, not onlybecause this is the thing about
it Like, yeah, you want thatright, you want to be able for
pops to say you know there's myboy, that's my son, but we also
got to do it for ourselves, right, and that's why I talk
(15:44):
about earlier I was talkingabout the self-care.
You know that's another big areaof reflection Middle of the
year, man, we've been throughsome things.
You know we've seen some things.
You know we halfway there, soyou know there's been some hills
(16:04):
, right.
So in this moment, yeah, we canget caught up in the grind
Goals, you know, trying to makeit, trying to impress pops.
But it's also crucial to askhow is your self-care routine
going Right?
(16:26):
Just as recent, as you know, this summer, like maybe it
wasn't the best at the beginningof the year but, like I said,
half halfime we can alwaysimprove right.
So self-care activities we gotto figure out and I'm saying we
because I'm also, this is for mejust as much as it is for y'all
(16:47):
.
You know what I mean theself-care for me.
I got to make sure that mymental is right.
We speak about it and we talkabout it on the pod and we talk
about the importance of men'shealth and all these things.
But, guys, we have to reallyimplement and do the work.
You know what I mean.
So I've been going to, you know, some different events.
(17:11):
I went to the Black Men'sHealth, the Black Men's Health
Conference and you know I'vebeen through to some other
different sessions.
You know what I mean.
Some it's kind of just likesome open forum sessions where
everybody could come and kind of, you know, get some healing and
(17:32):
speak.
But I haven't done.
I still have yet to do theone-on-one therapy.
So that's on my list.
We'll get it done before theend of the year and I'll let you
guys know how it goes, becauseI think it's important to talk
about that journey as well.
Self-care is extremely important.
I know we talk about it all thetime, but I feel like you just
(17:54):
can't talk about it enough.
So you know, guys, I've beentalking and I'm not going to lie
.
When I'm on here by myself, itfeels like a constant ramble,
like am I just talking andtalking?
But I have to remember, hey,it's a solo pod baby, it's just
sun today.
(18:15):
It's just sun.
So that's all right.
I just want to let y'all knowpops will be back, you don't
have to worry.
I got some good feedback lasttime, you know.
(18:37):
But hey, if y'all tired ofhearing my voice, there's no,
possibly back man.
I know y'all missed the silverfox, but it's all good.
So I do want to wrap it up,guys.
You know there's.
It can't be overstated just howimportant these midpoint
(18:59):
reflections are, how importantit is for us to really kind of
check in on ourselves.
We talk about checking in onour friends and our family and
things like that, but we got tocheck in on ourselves as well.
So I hope this pod today wasthat for you, on ourselves as
well.
So I hope this pod today wasthat for you.
You know, if you're listeningand it's been a while since you
(19:19):
asked yourself some of thesequestions, or it's been a while
since anybody asked you.
You know, either way it goes, these are things that we need to
think about, right, because ifwe don't do it, then we kind of
just going along the path withno guidance and no real
structure.
So that's it for today'spodcast.
(19:39):
You guys, thank you for tuningin.
You already know where to getall your info
popsandsunconversationscom.
And we are still on Patreon.
There's some goodies there foryou and continue to give us
feedback.
Continue to hit the DMs withquestions.
We do have some questions thatwe have in the DM, but I'm going
(20:02):
to wait until Pops get back toreally address those.
But until next time, it's beena great episode and it's been
great chilling with you guys.
I hope you have a great day andI'll see you next time.
Peace.
