Based on the best-selling book for successful and emerging entrepreneurs “Take Ownership of your Career 2.0, A Survival Guide for the Battered Career and Investor Syndrome”  POD – Possibilities, Options & Dreams fosters meaningful connections, empowering aspiring entrepreneurs to identify, pursue and achieve their dream of self-sufficiency.

Chances are that you are interested in this Podcast because you are among the 75% of the population that is seeking self-sufficiency. Most likely you have a desire to find a better way and to improve your current situation. Perhaps you are tired of being a victim of the Battered Career Syndrome® or the Battered Investor Syndrome® which keep people going back to hopeless situations with the expectation that this time around they will be different–that the job and the stock markets will go back to the heydays enjoyed in years past.

More in This Episode:
How do you turn that growing awareness of other possibilities into a tangible goal? Our research shows that 75 percent of all adults are searching for something other than a job. They are seeking self-sufficiency and financial independence and they are experiencing constant frustration. They have a sense that there is something better out there, a different path from the rat race. Think of your increasing dissatisfaction with the traditional job market as a grain of sand inside an oyster. It is a persistent irritation; however, that is not necessarily a bad thing. When properly channeled, that grain of sand eventually develops into a precious pearl. In terms of your career, this constant irritation produced by the frustration about the job market motivates you to look outside of what you know and allows you to see greater possibilities for your future.

Hey everyone, welcome to the possibilities options and
dreams podcast with theentrepreneur source, where we
empower individuals to identify, pursue and achieve their dreams
of self sufficiency,Melissa Pang and Mary Pang here
today we are with theentrepreneur soars, we have both

(00:49):
been a member of the Sourcelinkteam for a little over five
years. And we work with all ofour franchisor members, as well
as our coaches. And we areabsolutely excited to be
speaking about this book righthere. And we're going to be
diving in a little bit more.
It's called your career 2.0, asurvival guide for the battered

(01:10):
career and investor syndrome.
And today, we're going to betalking about turning sand into
pearls. Mary, fill us in, whatare we working with here?
Alright, so turning sand intopearls, I think it's a good
place to start just because ifyou think about the process of a

(01:30):
pearl, how is a pearl made? Itstarted when with a tiny grain
of sand or salt in this oystershell, that over time, it's
actually an irritation, thatover time turns into this
beautiful jewel that's prizedand, and sought after. But what
does it take to get it from thesand to the pearl. And I think,

(01:53):
you know, if we're talking aboutemployment, or unemployment, or
someone's current situation,whether you're talking about a
job, or their health, or arelationship that they're not
happy with, usually, you know, for something to turn into
something great or beautiful. Ifthere was a catalyst, there was
something in the beginning thatwasn't quite right. And if we

(02:17):
put it into context of thisbook, or what we know, a lot of
people are going through incorporate America, in the job
market in the job world, there'ssomething about that situation
that isn't right, it doesn'tfeel right. It's, it's, it's
painful, right, it's a, you cancall it frustration, you can
call it, you know, maybe you'retired of of experiencing ageism,

(02:42):
maybe you're tired of travelingon the weekends and missing out
on, you know, spending, watchingyour kids grow up going to
soccer games. And, you know, they're the kids play things
that are important to you and toyour family. Or maybe you're
just tired of being overlookedfor a promotion that you know,
you worked hard for, you know, the corporate politics, there
can be lots of different thingsthat is considered your grain of

(03:06):
salt. But the important thingis, it doesn't have to stay
there. It doesn't have to stayas a frustration. It can just be
the starting point, to help youget from where you are today to
where you want to be tomorrow,in five years and 10 years, the
most important thing, and I wantto hear your take on it, the
most important thing is thatthat grain of salt, whatever

(03:29):
that is, for you a grain of sandis a catalyst that you leverage
to create positive change. AndMel, what does it take to change
from being coming fromfrustration to fascination?
Great question. And this is justit ties back to mindset, first

(03:53):
and foremost. And what is whatis my mindset about this thing
that's frustrating me, you canbe frustrated all day long. And
it just kind of sits in thebackground. And it's just
something that you it comes upevery now and then or some
little event happened? And itjust comes up again, but you
never do anything about it. Butwhat's your mindset around it?

(04:14):
Are you feeling victimized? Areyou feeling like it's happening
to you, there's nothing you cando to prevent it. There's
nothing you can do to change it.
It's something that's justreally unfortunate, and you just
have to muscle through getthrough it. What I'm describing
what we're talking about iscalled battered career syndrome.
And so many people suffer fromthis. I'm sure many of you

(04:35):
either have experienced thisbefore in the past or you have
friends or family who havesuffered from this. And when you
think about either your mindsetor their mindset around it. What
is it? Is it that victimizedmindset where it's happening to
me nothing's going to change oris there an Ownership mindset
around it and when you can shiftfrom that I can't let any, like

(04:59):
nothing's going to change thatvictimized mindset to an
Ownership mindset, that's whenyou're going to take that
frustration, and that sand thatgrain that's irritating you, and
you're going to actually be ableto start doing something about
it. So instead of just sittingback and saying, oh my gosh,

(05:22):
like, it's, again, I just, Imissed that promotion, or Oh, my
gosh, I got laid off for thefourth time. Like, instead of
that mindset, it's okay, I'mtired of having to work 60 hours
a week for someone else. I'mtired of missing my kids, school
events and their games, what amI going to do about it? And it's

(05:47):
that mindset shift. Just tolike, we're talking very high
level here. Do you have anythingspecific or just something that
kind of really depicts thismindset shift? That can that can
happen? That should happen?
Yeah.
A couple of examples come tomind. There's a few. And this

(06:09):
what we're talking about, thatwe're you know, it's it's in
this job employment space, because that's, that's what we
talk about and, and everythingthat we do. But this, this
victim versus Ownership mindsetis something that can permeate
every single, you know, ifthere's ever a situation where
you're find yourselfcomplaining, or, you know, for

(06:30):
whatever reason, you identify, hey, this isn't working for me,
I'm not happy in this situation.
The next question is, what doyou do about it? One thing that
I think about, that's very closeto home is we had a family
member who was experiencing, like, textbook battered career
syndrome, everything across theboard, you know, was

(06:51):
experiencing it. And would wouldvoice those frustrations to us
to to her family members. And itwent on for not just months, for
years, you know, it wassomething it was a bad situation
that got worse. And, of course, you know, you empathize. You
don't want them to be in thatsituation. But it came to a
point where we said, You knowwhat, right now, it's just a

(07:11):
victim mindset. You can talkabout this for another three
years, I actually don't want tohear about it if you're not
going to do anything about it.
And so that was kind of for us.
That was kind of the line in thesand where we said, okay, you
know, of course, we don't wantyou to be in a situation, this
is horrible. But it's up to youto get out of this victim
mindset where you're just, youknow, voicing the frustration,

(07:34):
how are you going to get out ofthe situation? How are you going
to take ownership of whereyou're where you are, where you
don't want to be where you wantto be. And that was the catalyst
to, you know, start at a very, very small level, the next step
was, start interviewing otherjobs, start looking and seeing
what other jobs there are outthere. It doesn't necessarily

(07:55):
have to be business ownership, although, of course, we love to
see people take that stuff intoempowerment. But if you're not
happy with your currentsituation, it is 100% up to you
to get out of it right to takethose steps. I think it's very
easy to sit here and say thatright? Oh, you don't like your
your job get out of it. Inreality, that is a huge step to

(08:17):
make. And it can be very scary.
It is scary. It's it's it's it'sgoing from something that
whether you like it or not, it'scomfortable. It's known, making
that shift whether into anotherjob business ownership, making
any kind of a change like that alife change is a big deal. So
Mel, if someone is in thatspace, where they've identified,

(08:40):
okay, I'm not happy with mycurrent situation. I want to get
into this this fascinationplace, right? I want to change
my situation for the better, what is a small step that they
can take towards takingownership of their future from a
job perspective?

(09:00):
I look at this as it's, it'sreally exciting once someone is
ready to take that first step.
Because now and this is whatthis podcast is based on. This
is what the entrepreneur saysabout its possibilities, options
and dreams. And so once you areand it says right here, you
know, your next step begins withyour possibilities, options and

(09:23):
dreams. They all exist and theyare within your grasp. But to
create the empowerment needed toreach them, you must first
transform your mindset, which wetalked about, then we get into,
okay, what's just one small stepI can take, you know, with that
family member, what's that onestep she took? And it really is
about educating yourself andgathering facts and figuring out

(09:46):
what your possibilities optionsand dreams are. If you don't
even understand what's availableto you. Then how are you
supposed to kind of make thosechanges or start to make those
two ranges. So that can lookdifferent for, for different
people. Like, for example, formyself, I am not that person who
really goes and researches andgoes into the data and looks up

(10:11):
those things for me, I wouldneed to find someone who is an
expert or someone who has moreexperience or knowledge in. In,
for example, if I'm looking atself sufficiency and business
ownership, looking for someonewho can help guide me that way,
other people might do a lot ofthat self education and go out

(10:32):
and look and research and gatherdata. And that for them is going
to help them kind of understand,Okay, what's next? What's out
there. And so regardless of howyou are gathering data, and who
maybe you are leveraging togather data and fact, and now
I'm talking about, like, careerand in ownership around your

(10:57):
career, like gathering factsaround self sufficiency, whether
that is business ownership, whether it's another job,
whether it's entrepreneurship,there's a lot of different
things investing, who knows youknow exactly what it is. But
regardless of how you'regathering that data, that's
going to be the first step toempower yourself with that

(11:19):
knowledge. Because once you havethat, you then can make an
educated choice or an educateddecision around, where am I
going to go from here. And Ithink even though like even that
education piece of it is soimportant, but I think that
another really important pieceof it is actually identifying
what it is that you're lookingfor, and what your goals are. So

(11:44):
you have this frustration, thisgrain of sand. Why are you
frustrated? What is it about itthat's causing this irritation
and stress and anxiety? Once youhave that, okay, what then do
you actually want? What do youactually desire most small
steps, but they're like gettingyou into the right direction.

(12:06):
And we have something herecalled we call it the past
winning formula, you wanna talka little bit about, like that
piece of it, and how you canincorporate that as one of your
steps?
Yeah, well, I think it's sums upwhat you were talking about. I
think the just to summarize it alittle bit, two steps is the
first just learning whatpossibilities are out there. So

(12:28):
kind of expanding that comfortzone, expanding that horizons.
So instead of just having yourblinders on to your current
situation? Okay, this is oneoption. Here are five others
that I didn't know about, or Ididn't know a lot about, which
was scary. And now I know more,I think that's a huge first
step, which, you know, it kindof bridges that gap between

(12:51):
point A and point B, the pastwinning formula, what you're
talking about, I think it comesdown to, like self awareness,
self reflection, and gettingvery clear about what it is that
you want, as much as what youdon't want, and being able to
define that in terms that youcan articulate. I think, you

(13:12):
know, frustration, you know, ifI went up to someone, I was
like, Hey, how's work going? Andthey're like, Oh, I hate my job.
Right. Okay, cool. What aboutit? Is it the people? Is it the
management? Is it the, you don'tlike working with customers? Do
you not like working with theteam? Why? Why is that? Your
reaction, and so I thinksometimes people just haven't

(13:34):
taken that time to identify whatit is that they either enjoy, or
don't enjoy. One, oneconversation that is always
really rewarding is askingpeople, okay, if you look back
at your past career, maybesomeone has been in, you know,
in it has has a career for, youknow, 20 to 30 years, doing
different things, differentprojects. And maybe if you asked

(13:57):
them, you know, what was itabout that 30 year span that you
really enjoy doing? There mightbe a common thread throughout
multiple, you know, jobenvironments, or teams or
projects that they've worked on,that they've really, really
enjoyed and never really thoughtabout. So taking that time,
whether that's an hour, maybethat's a day that you take to

(14:21):
reflect on, what was it in mypast life that I really enjoyed,
where I felt like I was able toleverage my strengths, my skills
is self skill sets, the thingsthat gave me energy, where I
really felt like I providedvalue. What were those things?
And on the very on the flipside, what were the things that
drained to me made me feelfrustrated, I didn't enjoy that,

(14:44):
you know, that really were aburden on me and being able to
define those things for yourselfis extremely powerful, and
doesn't have to take a longtime. That can be like a two
hour exercise or a conversationwith a friend.
I agree 100% And at the end ofthe day, once you can see these

(15:04):
different frustrations as apositive, and you see it as,
okay, this frustration, whateverit is, is going to be the
catalyst that's going toactually allow me to take the
next step towards what I'mactually desiring, like, what I
actually want and what Iactually want from my life and

(15:26):
my family. And just seeing thatthere is a light at the end of
the tunnel, that frustrationisn't the end all be all. And
it's not like it's a crazy, hugestep. It's just education,
gathering facts, startsomewhere, and, and then from

(15:47):
there, you'll be able to, Ithink, build momentum. And
especially once you have that, like Ownership mindset, all of a
sudden, you're like, oh, oh, mygoodness, I have the control,
like, I can direct where I gofrom here, I'm not just locked
into this nine to five, employment where I am not happy,

(16:07):
I can actually do somethingthat's going to create change,
or at least allow me to see whatother options are out there.
Even if I don't do anythingabout it, at least I knew I did
my homework. So I can move fromthere. I think it comes down to
that mindset. And that's goingto be the unlock for a lot of
possibilities to come your way.

(16:28):
And then you're also open toseeing and finding opportunities
where maybe you wouldn't haveseen them before. And just just
one final thing, you know, talking about everything, these,
these small next steps thatsomeone can take, there are
people out there who whose jobit is to help with these
specific steps, identifying whatwhat someone wants, right in

(16:49):
there, you know, your career2.0, what does that look like?
And just being that soundingboard asking questions that
maybe you wouldn't have thoughtto ask yourself, as well as
having access to resources toprovide you with the education
so that you are aware of thedifferent possibilities that are
out there, again, that maybe youwouldn't have found on your own

(17:12):
or maybe that's the first stepfor someone is just knowing that
there's someone out there who'swilling and really, really
excited to have those types ofconversations with with people
like you every single day.
So thanks for joining us todayas we explore possibilities,
options and dreams and keep anopen mind and just remember
what's possible.
