Last week, we saw the power of God’s Word when the Ninevites heard It and turned from their wicked ways. Then, God showed compassion and did not destroy them. We should be willing to share God’s Word with those around us.

In Chapter 1, we saw Jonah Going Down as he was thrown over the side of the ship. In Chapter 2, we saw Jonah Coming Up as the great fish vomited him on the shore. In Chapter 3, we saw Jonah Going Into the great city of Nineveh to share God’s Word. And today, in Chapter 4, we will see Jonah Acting Out as he sits on the hill pouting.

As we’ve studied through this Book, I’ve noticed more and more how modern Christianity mirrors Jonah and his actions. So many of us are close enough to God to hear Him calling us to a specific task, but like Jonah, many choose not to obey.

It seems that the modern church is glorifying the “meism” mentality that Jonah makes famous in this Book. We choose not to help our brother, we decide not to serve the body with the gifts, talents, and abilities that God provides, and we pile up riches for ourselves while we rob God.

The title of our message today is Jonah Acts Out. Our message points will be:

  1. Partial Obedience is Disobedience
  2. The Pouting Prophet
  3. The Mercy and Patience of God

Main Scripture - Jonah 4:1-11

Supporting Texts - Jonah 3:10, 1 Samuel 15: 9-11 & 22, Job 1:20-21, Jonah 2:2 & 7, Romans 5:8-9, James 4:14, Psalm 145:20, John 14:15

Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions:

  • Why is it easy to think Partial Obedience is okay?
  • Do you recognize when you are a “Pouting Christian? Explain.
  • Explain how God is Patient with you.
  • Take time to write what Chapter 4 would look like if Jonah kept the vows he made in Chapter 2, and then ask yourself which chapter you are living in.
