Speaker 1 (05:52):
So you've probably
heard all the hype about greens
powders, but have you everstopped to ask is this really
the best way to nourish my body?
Today, we're uncovering thetruth about greens powders what
they really do, what they don'tdo, and how to make choices that
optimally support your health, and the first concern is the
(06:12):
additives and unhealthyingredients that are often in
there.
Now what I always tell you whenit comes to choosing a product,
what's one of the first thingsyou want to do?
Speaker 2 (06:24):
I've got my hand
raised.
What is it?
Turn that puppy over.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
TTPO, turn that puppy
over.
And when you do that, what maysurprise you with some of these
greens powders is that, whilethey sound healthy, if you
actually read the ingredientsthat are on there, like many
other things, you'll findflavorings and sweeteners and
fillers and other things thatare unhealthy additions that
just don't have any businessbeing there.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
I wouldn't even be
surprised if there were
preservatives there.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
It's true, and these
additives can do more harm than
good.
Not only are they not what yourbody needs in order to thrive,
a lot of times they'resabotaging ingredients that you
just don't want to be eating.
So the first concern is theadditives and unhealthy
ingredients.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
And the second
concern is that these could be
used as a substitute for freshgreens, leading to a false sense
of security that you're gettingwhat you need.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
It's so tempting to
think, if I add this into my
daily routine, it's all I need.
In other words, you might feellike these powders are an
acceptable substitute for freshwhole plant foods.
You might even find yourselfeating fewer whole plant foods,
like Jared said, thinking I'mgetting my greens.
I've had my powder today, andthis happens more often than you
might think.
Why?
(07:35):
Because we're being led tothink this way by advertisers
who want to sell you theirgreens powders.
Now, you almost have to hearthis to believe it.
So I want to share with yousome direct quotes from greens
powder ads that I've personallyheard myself.
I think you'll quickly see howwe're being intentionally led to
(07:56):
believe that this is asingularly great way to get our
greens.
Here are some of the quotesGiving your body what it needs
can sometimes feel reallycomplicated, but it doesn't have
to be.
We're here to make healthyhabits beautifully easy for you
by designing our product to giveyour body the support it needs
every day, combining the highestquality ingredients.
(08:17):
So we have to ask ourselves arethese really the highest
quality ingredients?
This isn't just a shortcut.
It's the future of nutrition.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Everything you just
said, though, is how I feel
about the way that we're eating.
Except for the one scoop part, everything else giving your body
what it needs can sometimesfeel really complicated, but it
doesn't have to be.
That's what we teach every day.
It's totally what we teach.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
But the difference is
what we teach is the foundation
.
I mean, this is the way thatit's been done since the
beginning of time by those whowant to be healthy.
Right, we just need to know howto get our mindset right so we
don't hear these things aboutstuff like greens powders or
things that have been ground upand put into a bottle.
It's not that we're againstsupplements Supplements aren't
(09:00):
bad but when you think that isthe foundation of your nutrition
, you're going to run intohealth problems.
It's just a given.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Or that you can use
this to undo the effects of a
bad diet, like you can just kindof sprinkle some powder on it,
exactly, and then it undoes allthe other effects.
But I do feel that thisapproach speaks to another angle
, and that's convenience, because so many people think
that whole food plant-based hasto be difficult.
So if they're going to gettheir veggies, going to get
(09:28):
their greens, then they have toget it in this way for it to be
quick, to be easy.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
Right.
And that leads to the nextthing I heard on one of the ads
and they said this what's theeasiest thing the easiest, okay,
the easiest thing for you to dofor your health that makes the
biggest difference?
Do you really believe thateating a powder is going to make
the biggest difference in yourhealth?
I guess it depends on how badtheir diet is.
(09:54):
Well, I guess so, but you justsaid it yourself.
You can't sprinkle a littlegreen powder on something and
expect it to change your wholeoutlook.
It could help a little bit, Imean, if there's certain
nutrients you're not getting.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
You could get some
benefit, but I don't think it's
going to completely reversethose dietary choices.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
Right.
And if it's something you'renot eating at all and you think
I'm going to drink greens powderbut I'm not going to eat any
whole plant foods, you'reprobably going to find yourself
struggling.
Because, number one, it's notreally as enjoyable as whole
plant foods can be when you knowhow to do it, when you know the
way to make it sustainable andlasting, because it's exciting.
The meals, the snacks, thedrinks, all these things, the
(10:32):
desserts that you thought youcouldn't have, they actually
taste good and you like themjust as much or better than your
old favorites.
You just set yourself up foramazing wins and successes.
The way we cook foods is soconvenient now, Some of the
foods we even eat raw.
I mean, how much moreconvenient can you get than that
?
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Zero prep time.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
And you Waking up
every day feeling great because
you get a lot of really goodwhole plant foods.
You're filling your plate withthe great stuff.
Yeah, maybe you have somegreens powders later on Nothing
wrong with that, and we're goingto get into that in a little
bit but we don't want you to seethese things as the foundation
of your meals.
That can lead to trouble whenoptimal health is your goal.
(11:12):
The ad went on to highlight allthe benefits of plant extracts.
They literally said that Allthe benefits of plant extracts
and if you've been listening tous for long enough, you
understand that we know thatit's not just about one extract
or two extracts from a plant.
It's actually about the wholepackage.
(11:34):
How has God created this thing?
That extract was actuallyinside a plant when it was
originally designed by God,surrounded by all these other
things many of which we probablydon't even know or recognize
yet that are there helping ourbodies to use those things that
have now been extracted.
So, if you think about that, extracts are not going to
provide optimal nutritionbecause they've been stripped
(11:55):
out of the original package thatwas designed to most optimally
use those nutrients.
So our point here is we don'twant you to have a false sense
of security by using thesegreens and thinking this is
going to be the foundation foroptimal health, because it's not
a good foundation.
You know you can have solidfoundations and you can have
(12:16):
shaky foundations.
These greens powders is a goodfoundation.
You know you can have solidfoundations and you can have
shaky foundations.
These greens powders is a shakyfoundation.
Think about that Powder is ashaky foundation.
Again, we're not againstpowders.
We're not against supplementswhen used in combination with a
whole food, plant-based diet, done in the way that you
actually enjoy, so that it lasts.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
The third concern
with greens powders are
processing issues.
How did those greens becomepowdered?
They did not grow that way.
You did not find them in thegarden in powdered form.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
We seriously need to
be asking these questions,
because they're the questionsthat are going to make all the
difference.
How did this become a powder?
Speaker 2 (12:54):
The main ways that
the greens will get processed
will involve heat anddehydration, where they will
actually heat these plants upand try to get rid of enzymes in
them, and this helps toincrease shelf life.
Now the problem with thedehydration is you can lose some
of the water-soluble vitamins.
You can lose some of thenatural cofactors.
Some of the minerals may notabsorb.
Well, even though the mineralsaren't eliminated, you need some
(13:16):
of the cofactors, like you needvitamin C to help you absorb
the iron that's left in it.
So up to 50 percent of thevitamin C is gone with this type
of processing system.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
And our fourth
concern with these powders is
that they can be super expensive, putting a huge strain on your
budget.
Think about this If you boughta huge bag of greens powders,
how many actual whole plantfoods could you buy for that
same amount of money over thecourse of a month?
So again, we want to look atgetting those foundational foods
(13:47):
into your life first, and thenadding things like the green
powders that can give you extrasupplemental nutrients that you
might not be getting any otherway.
So this leads us into how doyou use green powders the right
way?
Is there a way to harness thesepowders and use them to
naturally improve your health?
And the answer is yes.
Here's how.
(14:07):
Step number one is read theingredients label.
That's right.
Turn that puppy over Avoidingpowders with additives,
artificial sweeteners and thingsyou cannot pronounce.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Step number two scan
that label again, looking for
beneficial plants.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
This is one reason
that we love greens powders.
I know we sound like we hatethem throughout the rest of the
podcast, but we don't.
One of the reasons that wereally love a good greens powder
is because you can get thingsthat you would never eat,
because, number one, they mightnot be found in your area
grocery store, might besomething that's grown in
another part of the world andtherefore would have nutrients
(14:46):
in it that you would never getwith your foundational plate
from your area, so it could bebeneficial for you to get these
things into your life.
So, again, we don't want youeating these foods as your
foundational foods, but what wedo want you to do, if you're
going to choose to add greenpowders to your nutritional plan
, is to make sure you're gettingone that doesn't just have the
same things you're alreadyeating on repeat.
(15:08):
Choose the ones that have cleaningredients again, no
artificial sweeteners oradditives things you can't
pronounce but that do include alot of whole plant foods that
you're not getting on a regularbasis.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
And the key here,
though, is that you're adding
this on top of a great varietyof greens that you're getting
from your local supermarket, that you're getting on a daily
basis.
So you're getting all thenutrients the minerals, the
vitamins, the phytonutrients butthen you're adding these greens
on top of that, perhaps gettingsome nutrients that you might
not otherwise, because, just asAnita said, some of these plants
(15:40):
may be found from other areasof the world and will give you
even a wider variety.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
The third way to
optimize your use of greens
powders is to check theprocessing method.
Now, we talked about thisbefore as a negative with heat
process powders, but what if youlooked for a raw, freeze-dried
option to maximize your nutrientcontent?
Speaker 2 (16:02):
This is an excellent
way to go, because with
freeze-drying they don't have toheat them to get rid of the
moisture in it.
They actually freeze them, pullthem under a vacuum and then,
as the ice melts, it becomes agas.
So then the food is left dry,but not at high temperatures.
They're able to do it at lowertemperatures and maintain a much
(16:23):
higher percent of the nutrients, sometimes 80 to 90 percent of
the original content, and that'sexciting.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
So there's going to
be a big difference between
greens powders that have beenheat processed versus the ones
that are raw and freeze dried.
And step four choose organic, because the reality is a lot of
these powders have variousingredients in them and you
don't know which ones have beensprayed and which ones have been
treated this way and that way.
But if you choose organic, you're much less likely to get
(16:50):
unnecessary pesticides andchemicals in your food.
And step five research thecompany.
Why is that important?
Speaker 2 (16:59):
You want to look into
their philosophy.
How are they processing thefood?
Why are they doing this?
Is it for a genuine concern ofhealth or is it for profit?
Speaker 1 (17:09):
And the other thing
you want to consider when you're
researching the company is hasit been bought out by a larger
corporation that's known forcutting corners like a
mainstream corporation?
Because a lot of times thesesmaller family companies are
great.
They have a fantastic name, fantastic reputation.
You know they're not puttingmess in their food.
(17:29):
It gets sold.
You don't realize it becauseyou haven't looked back at the
company.
And now it's owned by some bigconglomerate that really doesn't
care about getting the bestnutrients and the best
ingredients.
They're just trying to linetheir pockets, make a profit.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
And this happens way
more than we realize.
I remember an example of aspecific toothpaste a while back
that was independently ownedand had great ingredients and
then got bought out by a largecompany.
And they do that because theyknow that these brands have a
specific reputation and theyhave a certain following.
But if they can grab thatbecause it's a premium product,
(18:05):
higher price tag they startcutting corners.
And then now these companiesare making even bigger profits
because many people don't turnthat puppy over.
That's why we recommend everyso often whatever you buy, take
a quick look just to make surethat things haven't changed on
the ingredient list.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
And then step number
six is consider the cost.
We talked about this a littlebit before.
These powders can get quiteexpensive, and so you're going
to save money in the long runand enjoy better tasting options
by focusing on whole plantfoods as your foundation.
Even making veggie juices andsmoothies, you can pack so many
nutrients into one thing.
(18:42):
No, we're not anti-juice andwe're not anti-smoothie.
As long as we're talking aboutvegetable juice and the majority
of your smoothies being greensmoothies, you are good to go.
We'll be talking more aboutthat in an upcoming episode, but
just know that getting thatfoundation right is great.
And then, if you have extrafunds or money isn't a concern
for you go ahead and buy some ofthe ones that follow the
(19:05):
guidelines that we've given youhere, so that you can choose the
best powders for you by readingthe ingredients label and
avoiding additives, artificialsweeteners and preservatives.
Looking again at the label forbeneficial plants that you don't
normally get in your life.
Check out the processing method.
Avoid heat process powders andchoose instead raw and freeze
(19:28):
dried options, and don't usepowders as a substitute for real
whole plant foods.
Always choose organic wheneverpossible and research the
company to make sure it hasn'tbeen recently bought out, and to
discover the company'sphilosophy about nutrition.
And finally, consider the cost, because green powders can be
(19:48):
quite expensive.
So your first priority shouldbe to load up your plate with
delicious, nutritious, wholeplant foods in the way you
actually enjoy.
Here's the bottom line.
Greens powders can be a helpfulbooster, but they're not the
foundation of good health.
The real key is building thesustainable whole food, plant
based lifestyle that yougenuinely love.
