SPEAKER_00 (00:14):
Shalom Grace and
peace to you in the name of our
Heavenly Father and through ourLord and Savior Jesus Christ,
may the Spirit of our Lord bewith you today.
Today we are in Daniel chapterten.
And in this chapter of Daniel,we are perhaps given the
(00:35):
greatest insight into theangelic world in all of
Scripture, with details of anencounter that Daniel had with
an angel that leave our mindsamazed.
Beginning at verse one.
In the third year of Cyrus, Kingof Persia, a word was revealed
(00:56):
to Daniel, whose name wasBeltashazzar, and the word was
true, and it was a greatconflict, and he understood the
word, and he had understandingof the vision.
Verse one opens up giving us thetime frame of this encounter.
(01:16):
It is the third year of Cyrus,King of Persia.
And this marks two years sincethe first decree of Cyrus, which
allowed Israel to return toJudea.
It's five thirty four BC.
Daniel would be abouteighty-seven years old right
now.
Daniel also identifies himselfin this verse as Belteshazzar,
(01:40):
which was the name that KingNebuchadnezzar had given him
over seventy years ago.
And as Daniel does this, he tiesall of his life together with
bookends.
As this vision and encounterfrom this angel will be the last
vision Daniel records as hecloses the book of Daniel.
(02:01):
This vision includes chapters10, 11, and 12.
And we're told that Danielreceived a word.
Once again, Daniel receives adirect revelation from God
through a vision, and thisvision shows great conflict.
It shows a conflict over Israel.
(02:24):
And through the vision, Danielunderstands the peace that
Israel has now received, beingsent back to Judea, being
removed from the captivity ofthe Babylonians, will not last
for long.
And through what the angel willbe explaining to Daniel in these
three chapters, Daniel will beable to understand this vision.
(02:49):
Picking up in verse two, inthose days I, Daniel, was
mourning for three weeks.
I ate no delicacies, no meat orwine entered my mouth, nor did I
anoint myself at all for threeweeks.
In verse two we learn thatDaniel is fasting.
(03:12):
He's been fasting for threeweeks.
It tells us Daniel was mourningfor three weeks.
During these three weeks, Danielis trying to understand God's
plans for Israel.
As we know, throughout Daniel'slife he had received multiple
visions and revelations from Godabout Israel and the end times.
(03:35):
And Daniel at this point in hislife is seeking God's face to
understand what is God's planfor Israel.
And at this time he had beenfasting and mourning, seeking
God's face for three weeks.
Now Daniel had a long history ofmaintaining a disciplined diet.
(03:59):
Daniel kept with the Jewish lawand he would not be defiled.
We learned that way back inDaniel chapter one.
However, there were also times, such as this three weeks, where
Daniel would fast as he soughtthe Lord.
And this type of fasting, noteating delicacies, drinking only
(04:20):
water, has popularly becomeknown as the Daniel fast.
Picking up in verse four, on thetwenty fourth day of the first
month, as I was standing on thebank of the great river, that is
the Tigris, I lifted up my eyesand looked, and behold, a man
(04:43):
clothed in linen, with a belt offine gold from Euphaz around his
waist.
His body was like beryl, hisface like the appearance of
lightning, his eyes like flamingtorches, his arms and legs like
the gleam of burnished bronze, and the sound of his words like
(05:07):
the sound of a multitude.
Here in verses four and five, welearn that on the twenty fourth
day of the first month Danielwas at the Tigris River.
Now the first month of theJewish calendar is Nisan, which
is early spring, and the twentyfourth day is ten days after the
(05:30):
beginning of Passover.
It's also three days after theend of that week of Passover.
So Passover had just finishedthree days ago.
Some people wrongly believe thatDaniel's fast was simply part of
an extraordinary sorrow that hehad for Passover that year.
(05:50):
However, careful study shows usthat this fast was very specific
to Daniel setting his heart tounderstand the things that God
had already revealed to him.
We see that in verse 12 of thischapter.
And while Daniel's fast didinclude the week of Passover, it
(06:11):
began before it, and itcontinued after it until the
angel arrives.
The description of the angel inverse five and six is perhaps
the most detailed description ofan angel in all of Scripture.
What we see in these verses andthe following verses are an
(06:32):
incredible description detailingthe interaction between one of
God's holy angels and one ofGod's most faithful prophets,
Daniel.
The angel first appears here toDaniel in what might be
described as his spiritualstate.
Perhaps we might say the angelis in raw form.
(06:56):
While the angel is clothed inlinen and has a belt of fine
gold, his body, it says, waslike berrel, and pure barrel is
translucent, like glass.
So the body of this angel istranslucent, it's see through to
some degree.
His arms and legs gleamed likepolished bronze, and his face
(07:21):
was electrified like lightning, his eyes blazed like burning
fire.
And when he spoke, his voiceboomed, sounding as if it were a
throng of many people.
It's interesting that thedetails of this angel are
similar to how Jesus isdescribed in Revelation chapter
(07:46):
one verses thirteen andfourteen.
And this similarity has led somepeople to think that this was
the pre incarnate Jesus Christ.
However, as we carefully studythis, we know that this angel
could not be the preincarnateChrist, because as we learn
later, this angel needed helpfrom the archangel Michael in a
(08:10):
spiritual battle over Persia.
We learn that in verse thirteen.
The Son of God would not haveneeded any help against demonic
forces.
Picking up in verse seven and I,Daniel, alone saw the vision,
for the men who were with me didnot see the vision, but a great
(08:33):
trembling fell upon them, andthey fled to hide themselves.
So I was left alone and saw thisgreat vision, and no strength
was left in me.
My radiant appearance wasfearfully changed, and I
retained no strength.
Then I heard the sound of hiswords, and as I heard the sound
(08:56):
of his words, I fell on my facein a deep sleep, with my face to
the ground.
Verses seven, eight, and ninedescribe first impressions.
These are the first impressionsfrom Daniel and his companions
when this angel arrives.
We learn that Daniel was with agroup of men when this angel
(09:19):
arrived, and Daniel saw thisangel, but the other men did
not.
Yet the other men felt a verystrong, fearful presence.
And even though they couldn'tsee the angel or the vision,
they were so afraid for theirlives that they fled as if their
lives were in danger, and theyran away and left Daniel alone.
(09:40):
Daniel himself, after seeing thedetails of this angel and being
in his presence, was completelydrained of all of his strength.
It says Daniel fell on his facebecause he had no strength.
And the moment the angel spoke,Daniel lost consciousness,
(10:01):
falling into a deep sleep.
Picking up in verse ten, andbehold a hand touched me, and
set me trembling on my hands andknees.
And he said to me, O Daniel, mangreatly loved, understand the
words that I speak to you, andstand upright, for now I have
(10:24):
been sent to you.
And when he had spoken this wordto me, I stood up, trembling.
In verses ten and eleven theangel touches Daniel as he lays
unconscious and wakes him up.
Then the angel helps him get tohis knees.
The angel tells Daniel how muchhe's loved by God, and tells
(10:46):
Daniel to stand upright andlisten to this message that God
has given him.
This description of Daniel'sencounter with this angel is
very similar to his past twoexperiences with the angel
Gabriel.
One which was eighteen years agoin Daniel chapter eight, verses
seventeen and eighteen, and theother was just two years ago in
(11:10):
Daniel chapter nine, versetwenty three.
The description that we readhere in chapter ten goes into
more detail and leads us toconclude that this messenger
from God is very likely againthe angel Gabriel.
Picking up in verse twelve, thenhe said to me, Fear not, Daniel,
(11:33):
from the first day that you setyour heart to understand, and
humbled yourself before God,your words have been heard.
And I've come because of yourwords.
The prince of the kingdom ofPersia withstood me twenty one
days, but Michael, one of thechief princes, came to help me,
(11:56):
for I was left there with thekings of Persia, and came to
make you understand what is tohappen to your people in the
latter days.
For the vision is for days yetto come.
Verses twelve through fourteengive us incredible insight into
the timing of those three weeksthat Daniel was fasting.
(12:19):
It tells us that Gabriel tookthree weeks to get to Daniel.
Looking back at verse two, welearned that Daniel had been
fasting for three weeks.
And here we learn that the angelhad been sent from God the first
day that Daniel had set hisheart to understand, and he had
humbled himself, or he had begunhis fast.
(12:43):
And the angel tells Daniel thatGod heard his words, and Gabriel
came because of Daniel's words.
What a powerful example this isto us, of how the prayers of a
righteous man are powerful andeffective, and they prevail
much.
(13:04):
Daniel's also told that an evildemonic angel opposed Gabriel
from arriving in a timelymanner, and this gives us
insight into the real warfarethat is happening in the
heavens.
Warfare between God's holyangels and Satan's evil fallen
angels.
(13:25):
We are told that this fallenangel was given authority.
They had power by Satan tooppress and destroy the work of
God over the Persian people.
That's modern day Iran.
And this gives us some insightinto Satan's organized heavenly
network.
It's designed to influencenations and people against God
(13:49):
and God's people.
Then we learn also in verse 12that Michael, one of the chief
princes, came to aid the angelGabriel, so that he might break
free from the battle and come toDaniel.
Now the archangel Michael isportrayed in Scripture as the
(14:10):
chief warrior angel.
We might think of him as thesecretary of defense in the
heavens, or a five star generalin war.
Here Michael is described as oneof the chief princes, implying
that there are more chief angelsthan just Michael.
However, Michael is the onlyarchangel named as such in
(14:35):
Scripture, and that title forMichael is found in Jude nine.
Finally, Gabriel tells Danielthat the vision he's being given
is for his people in the latterdays of the earth, for the days
yet to come.
When I researched that phrasethe latter days of the earth, it
(14:57):
means the end time period, orthe final days of the earth.
Picking up in verse fifteen Whenhe had spoken to me according to
these words, I turned my facetowards the ground and was mute,
and behold, one in the likenessof the children of man touched
(15:19):
my lips.
Then I opened my mouth andspoke.
I said to him who stood beforeme, O my Lord, by reason of the
vision, pains have come upon me,and I retain no strength.
How can my Lord's servant talkwith my Lord?
For now no strength remains inme, and no breath is left in me.
(15:44):
In verses fifteen throughseventeen, we continue to see
how Daniel is affected by thepresence of Gabriel.
Remember, Gabriel's voicesounded like a multitude of
people.
It was overwhelming to Daniel'shuman ears, and in his flesh
Daniel was deeply afraid.
(16:05):
He couldn't even look at Gabrielor even find the strength to
speak.
And then we're told Behold, onein the likeness of the children
of man touched my lips.
What an incredible statement.
This statement implies thatperhaps the angel Gabriel
(16:25):
changed his form to that of aman and touched Daniel on the
lips.
And after Gabriel had changedhis appearance and touched
Daniel, Daniel was able tospeak.
Daniel then tells Gabriel thatit's because of the vision that
he's receiving that he has nostrength.
He asks Gabriel, How am Isupposed to talk with you when I
(16:48):
have no strength in my body orbreath for my voice?
Picking up in verse eighteen, again one having the appearance
of a man touched me andstrengthened me, and he said, O
man greatly loved, fear not.
Peace be with you.
(17:09):
Be strong and of good courage.
And as he spoke to me I wasstrengthened, and said, Let my
Lord speak, for you havestrengthened me.
In verses eighteen and nineteen,it would seem that Gabriel has
maintained this form of a man,and once again is touching
(17:31):
Daniel.
And as Gabriel touches Danielthis time, he's encouraging him,
reminding him how he is loved byGod.
The Daniel has nothing to fear, but instead he should let the
shalom peace of God be with him.
Furthermore, Gabriel encouragesDaniel with the same words that
(17:53):
the Lord once spoke to Joshua inJoshua one nine.
He says, Be strong and of goodcourage.
Daniel would know these words,so that Daniel could be assured
that God was with him.
And as Gabriel encourages Danielwith these words of peace,
(18:15):
Daniel is strengthened in hisspirit.
And after this encouragement andstrengthening from Gabriel,
Daniel tells him, Please give methe message, for I am now strong
enough to listen.
twenty Then he said, Do you knowwhy I have come to you?
(18:35):
But now I will return to fightagainst the prince of Persia,
and when I go out, behold, theprince of Greece will come.
But I will tell you what isinscribed in the book of truth.
There is none who contends by myside against these except
Michael, your prince.
(18:56):
In verses twenty and twenty one,Gabriel describes how this holy
battle in the heavens againstSatan's forces in Persia will
continue even after he hasdelivered this message to
Daniel.
And then the angel Gabrieldescribes how another evil agent
of Satan will come to oppressand destroy the work of God and
(19:20):
his people.
And this next demonic princewill be assigned to the nation
of Greece.
And all of this continues togive insight to Daniel and to us
today on how demonic authoritiesare assigned to nations, and how
this prince of Greece will bethe next satanic force to have
(19:43):
great influence in the heavensonce the Greek Empire conquers
the world.
And when Gabriel says, I willtell you what is inscribed in
the book of truth, we are givenquite a revelation.
This is the only place inScripture that we learn about
this book of truth.
(20:05):
And I think about the book oftruth as the Bible for angels.
Before Scripture was ever givento men, before the prophets and
before the apostles wereinspired by the Holy Spirit to
write the words that we havetoday in the Scripture, God
inscribed this book of truth inthe heavens.
(20:27):
The things we can know forcertain about this book of
truth, which Gabriel speaks of,is that it reveals prophecy
about the end days.
It has specific details aboutnations, rulers and kings, tens
of years, hundreds of years, even thousands of years before
(20:49):
they exist.
Finally, we see that theArchangel Michael is once again
named as the one that fights forthe nation of Israel.
And Gabriel also describesMichael as your prince, implying
that the Archangel Michael isassigned by God as the guardian
(21:12):
of Israel.
Thank you for joining me todayfor this angelic discovery.
God bless you this week.
