Israel (Jacob) blesses his grandsons Ephraim and Manasseh in Genesis 48, deliberately crossing his hands to give the greater blessing to the younger son. This powerful chapter illustrates God's sovereign choice and how divine plans often work contrary to human expectations and cultural traditions.

• Joseph brings his sons Manasseh and Ephraim to visit his ailing father Israel
• Israel formally adopts Joseph's sons, giving them equal status with his own
• Israel intentionally crosses his hands during the blessing
• Israel places his right hand on Ephraim (younger) rather than Manasseh (firstborn)
• Israel prophesies that while both will be great, Ephraim will surpass Manasseh
• Israel describes God as the God of his fathers, his Shepherd, and his Redeemer
• Israel gives Joseph an additional inheritance of land.

  • It is also discussed how Ephriam will not be the tribe that brings about the Messiah but Judah will.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Grace and peace to you from God, our Father and our
Lord and Savior, jesus Christ.
Today we are in Genesis, chapter 48, where Jacob blesses
Ephraim and Manasseh, beginningat verse 1.
After this, joseph was toldBehold, your father is ill.

(00:27):
So he took with him his twosons, manasseh and Ephraim, and
it was told to Jacob your son, joseph, has come to you.
Then Israel summoned hisstrength and sat up in bed.
Israel summoned his strengthand sat up in bed and Jacob said

(00:50):
to Joseph God Almighty appearedto me at Luz in the land of
Canaan and blessed me and saidto me Behold, I will make you
fruitful and multiply you and Iwill make of you a company of
peoples and I will give you thisland to your offspring after
you for an everlastingpossession here.

(01:15):
In these first four verses ofchapter 48, verse 1 tells us
that this visit from Joseph andhis sons, manasseh and Ephraim,
takes place sometime later, which means it's taking place
sometime later, after Jacob hadcalled Joseph previously and

(01:38):
asked him to take an oath thatJoseph would make sure Jacob was
buried with his fathers, abraham and in the land of
Canaan.
Considering how in our lastchapter chapter 47, it ended and
now it begins this way, it'slikely these events are within

(02:00):
months, perhaps even weeks, ofeach other and Joseph is told
behold, your father is ill Again.
The context of all of thissuggests that this visit from
Joseph and his two sons to hisfather, israel, is simply
because they know he's ill.

(02:20):
They don't have any idea of theimportant developments that are
about to take place and theblessings that Israel is about
to give.
And when Israel heard thatJoseph had come to see him, he
summoned his strength.
I don't know if you've everbeen exhausted or just
completely wiped out because youwere sick, but when that

(02:43):
happens, you know that once in awhile you can summon a little
bit more strength.
And here Israel summons hisstrength just to sit up in bed
and he talks with Joseph and histwo sons.
Then Jacob tells Joseph how GodAlmighty, or El Shaddai, the

(03:07):
all-sufficient God, appeared tohim at Lutz, which is also known
as Bethel.
Jacob then describes how GodAlmighty reaffirmed the
Abrahamic covenant to him andthat God promised that through
him he would make a greatcongregation of people, that God

(03:28):
would give a promised land tohis offspring and that the
promise would be an everlastingpromise, meaning this is going
to last for all of eternity, picking up in verse 5,.
And now your two sons, who wereborn to you in the land of
Egypt before I came to you inEgypt, Picking up in verse 5,

(03:52):
after them shall be yours.
They shall be called by thename of their brothers in their
inheritance.
As for me, when I came fromPaddan, to my sorrow, rachel

(04:13):
died in the land of Canaan, onthe way when there was still
some distance to go to Ephrata, and I buried her there, on the
way to Ephrata, that is,bethlehem.
In verses 5, 6, and 7, jacobformally adopts Joseph's two
firstborn sons as his own, giving them the exact same

(04:42):
status of an heir as Reuben andSimeon, his firstborn sons.
In doing this, what Jacob orIsrael is doing is giving
Rachel's two sons, joseph andBenjamin, the inheritance of
three tribes.
Instead of Joseph receiving adirect inheritance, his two sons
, ephraim and Manasseh, willeach be viewed as a separate

(05:04):
tribe.
They'll each be viewed as achild of Israel, and therefore
Joseph, the chosen and blessedson of Israel, receives here a
double inheritance.
As Jacob or Israel is affirmingthe Abrahamic covenant and

(05:25):
adopting Joseph's two sons, giving them the very rights of
the firstborn sons, it shows howIsrael considered Joseph to be
the chosen offspring, the one tocarry on the promise of the
coming Messiah.
The promise of the comingMessiah, and while the life of

(05:50):
Joseph clearly shows his fear ofthe Lord and his faith in the
redemptive plan of God, it willactually be through the line of
Judah that the Messiah comes.
After formally adopting Joseph'stwo sons, israel goes on to
recall the great sorrow that hehad when Joseph's mother died on
the way to Bethlehem, verse 8.

(06:13):
When Israel saw Joseph's sons,he said who are these?
And Joseph said to his fatherthey are my sons, whom God has
given me here.
And he said Bring them to me,please, that I may bless them
Now.
The eyes of Israel were dimwith age so that he could not

(06:33):
see.
So Joseph brought them near tohim and he kissed them and
embraced them, kissed them andembraced them.
And Israel said to Joseph Inever expected to see your face.
And behold, god has let me seeyour offspring also.
Then Joseph removed them fromhis knees and bowed himself with

(06:55):
his face to the earth.
And Joseph took them bothEphraim in his right hand
towards Israel's left hand andManasseh in his left hand
towards Israel's right hand, andbrought them near him.
And Israel stretched out hisright hand and laid it on the
head of Ephraim, who was theyounger, and his left hand on

(07:19):
the head of Manasseh, crossinghis hands, for Manasseh was the
firstborn.
In verses 8 through 14, afterIsrael tells Joseph that he is
officially adopting his twofirstborn sons, joseph then

(07:39):
brings his sons closer to Israeland now Israel can see the
forms of these two boys.
We learn that Israel has a lossof vision, but apparently he
can make out their forms and hesays who are these?
And Joseph tells his fatherthat they are in fact Ephraim

(08:00):
and Manasseh.
And Israel then asks Joseph tobring them closer so that he can
bless them.
And at the request of Israel, joseph does.
He brings both Ephraim andManasseh close to Israel and he
places the boys on theirgrandfather's knees.
Israel kisses them and beginsto embrace them.

(08:23):
Israel then expresses how henever thought he would ever see
Joseph again, but now he's ableto even see his children After
this time of intimacy with oneanother.
Joseph takes the boys off ofgrandpa's knees and the great
governor, joseph, bows himselfbefore his father, israel.

(08:46):
What a beautiful picture here ofthe humility of Joseph with his
now ailing father, joseph, thegovernor of Egypt, who was
prophetically given dreams byGod that his brothers, his
father and his mother would oneday bow down to him, now
acknowledges the faith and theheadship of his father bowing

(09:10):
down before Israel.
Joseph then brings his youngboys once again near their
grandfather and he placesManasseh the eldest at Israel's
right hand and Ephraim atIsrael's left hand.
And then Israel intentionallycrosses his arms and places his

(09:33):
right hand on Ephraim theyoungest and his left hand on
Manasseh Verse 15, left hand onManasseh Verse 15,.
And then he blessed Joseph andsaid the God before whom my
fathers, abraham and Isaac, walk, the God who has been my
shepherd all of my life to thisday, the angel who has redeemed

(09:56):
me from all evil, bless the boysand in them let my name be
carried on and the name of myfathers, abraham and isaac, and
let them grow into a multitudein the midst of the earth.
Here, in verses 15 and 16, wesee a blessing that Israel

(10:19):
begins to give the two children.
It says that Israel called uponthe name of the God of his
fathers, abraham and Isaac, theGod who had been like a shepherd
to him, and the angel who hadredeemed him from all evil.
And then he asks that God, hisGod, to bless the two boys of

(10:43):
Joseph.
From these two passages we seethat Israel has had a change of
attitude from his past gloom inlife Now, having seen the work
of God through the life andfaith of his son, joseph, and
having spent 17 years now withJoseph in Egypt.

(11:04):
Israel blesses the boys andasks the Lord to continue this
line of faith through these twoyoung boys.
The very fact that Israel usesthis threefold approach to
declare who the Lord is,beginning with the God of his
fathers, abraham and Isaac, immediately ties this to the

(11:29):
Abrahamic covenant, as all three, abraham Isaac and Jacob were
men of faith that walked withGod, and they were men anointed
by God and chosen by God ratherthan by birthright.
Furthermore, israel'sdescription of God being his

(11:51):
shepherd and his redeemer is aforeshadow and a description of
the coming Savior, jesus Christ.
The blessing that Jacob givesto Joseph here is a blessing
calling upon faith in theMessiah through Joseph's two
sons.
Verse 17,.

(12:11):
When Joseph saw that his fatherlaid his right hand on the hand
of Ephraim, it displeased himand he took his father's hand to
move hand of Ephraim.
It displeased him and he tookhis father's hand to move it
from Ephraim to the head ofManasseh.
And Joseph said to his fatherNot this way, my father, since
this one is the firstborn, putyour right hand on his head.

(12:32):
But his father refused and saidI know my son.
I know he also shall become apeople and he also shall be
great.
Nevertheless, his youngerbrother shall be greater than he
and his offspring shall becomea multitude of nations.

(12:53):
So he blessed them that day, saying by you, israel will
pronounce blessings, saying Godmake you as Ephraim and Manasseh
.
Thus he put Ephraim beforeManasseh here, in verses 17

(13:14):
through 20,.
Joseph realized his father wasblessing the sons in the
opposite of their birth order.
The Hebrew phrase literallymeans it was evil in his eyes.
Joseph was upset and he beganto move Israel's hand, telling

(13:34):
him that he had his hands on thewrong children, telling him
that he had his hands on thewrong children.
But Israel refused to blessaccording to the birth order.
And he told Joseph I know myson, I know, and he told Joseph
that both brothers shall begreat, but the younger one shall
be greater than the older.

(13:54):
And Israel pronounced Ephraimbefore Manasseh, giving the
younger Ephraim the greaterblessing.
Ephraim would in fact be blessedwith great men of faith, one of
them being Joshua, who wouldlead Israel into conquering the
promised land, the promised land, another being the prophet

(14:24):
Samuel.
Ephraim would also becomephysically strong.
They would be the strongest ofthe ten tribes who would one day
break away from Judah andBenjamin.
However, ephraim would not bethe tribe through whom the
Messiah would come.
Judah would Additionally, inspite of this blessing given by

(14:44):
Israel and Israel's hope forfaith to continue through
Joseph's line, the tribe ofEphraim would eventually lose
their favor of God because theywere given over to idolatry,
while the tribe of Judah wouldsecure it.
Hosea 4.17 reads Ephraim isjoined to idols.

(15:09):
Leave him alone.
And Psalm 78, 67-72 reads thatGod rejected the tent of Joseph.
He did not choose the tribe ofEphraim, but he chose the tribe
of Joseph.
He did not choose the tribe ofEphraim, but he chose the tribe
of Judah, mount Zion, which heloves.
He built his sanctuary like thehigh heavens, like the earth

(15:34):
which he has founded forever.
He chose David, his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds
.
His servant, and took him fromthe sheepfolds From following
the nursing ewes.
He brought him to shepherdJacob, his people, israel, his
inheritance.
With an upright heart.
He shepherded them and guidedthem with his skillful hand,

(16:00):
picking up in verse 21, slopethat I took from the hand of the
Amorites with my sword and mybow.

(16:26):
In our last two verses ofchapter 48, israel recognizes
that his time here on earth isvery short and he's not going to
see the day where the Lordbrings him personally out of
Egypt, him personally out ofEgypt.

(16:48):
But Israel believes and heunderstands the promise that God
had given him 17 years ago onhis way down to Egypt, where the
Lord said I myself will go downwith you to Egypt and I will
also bring you up again andJoseph's hand shall close your
eyes.
Israel now knows that it's inEgypt that Joseph is going to

(17:09):
close his eyes and the Lord isgoing to be now with Joseph and
one day the Lord will bringIsrael out of Egypt back into
the promised land, egypt backinto the promised land.
And believing in this promiseand with this hope of coming

(17:30):
back to the promised land, israel tells Joseph that he's
also given him this mountainslope, this plot of land that he
took from the Amorites.
And this was when he wassojourning, when he had to live
by his sword and his bow.
We do know that Jacob hadpurchased this land for a

(17:51):
hundred pieces of silver fromthe sons of Hamor Shechem's
father.
This is the location of Jacob'swell and this location is known
today.
It is kept by very strongtradition through Jews,
samaritans, muslims andChristians alike.
Israel is giving Joseph thisplot of land and it will be an

(18:14):
inheritance to all of thedescendants of Joseph, joshua
24.32.
Thank you so much for joiningme this week and diving further
in to the life of Israel and hisson, joseph.
Join me next week for chapter49, where Israel will bless all

(18:37):
of his sons.
God bless you this week.
