Speaker 1 (00:01):
Grace and peace to
you from God, our Father and our
Lord and Savior, jesus Christ.
Over the last couple of weekswe have been in the book of Jude
, and Jude's message to thechurch was that he wanted to
write about our common salvation.
But certain people have creptinto the church, ungodly people
(00:24):
who are perverting the grace ofGod into sensuality.
And then Jude goes on toexplain some of the specific
traits that these people have intheir ungodliness and how they
actually pervert the grace ofGod into sensuality.
Today we're going to be pickingup in verse 14 of Jude, where
(00:45):
Jude continues to talk aboutthese apostates, but he does so
in a very unique context, aprophecy from Enoch which points
to eschatology, and that willbe the focus of our message
today, starting in verse 14,.
Starting in verse 14, it wasalso about these that Enoch, the
(01:05):
seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying Behold, the Lord comes
with ten thousand of his holyones to execute judgment on all
and to convict all the ungodlyof their deeds of ungodliness
that they've committed in suchan ungodly way and of all the
(01:33):
harsh things that ungodlysinners have spoken against him.
These are grumblers, malcontents following their own
sinful desires.
They're loudmouth boastersshowing favoritism in order to
gain advantage.
In these three verses, judegives us an extraordinary amount
of information on prophecy, oneschatology and on these
(01:56):
apostates.
As I mentioned in my firstpodcast, jude goes deep into
theology and he packs it allinto just a few verses.
Jude begins saying it was alsoabout these that Enoch the
seventh from Adam prophesied.
Before I get into the specificpeople that Enoch is prophesying
(02:20):
about and Jude is referring to,let's talk a moment about Enoch
and this prophecy.
First of all, jude specificallypoints to Enoch being the
seventh in line from Adam, andscripture records that Enoch
walked with God and he was not,for God took him.
Enoch was one of the only twomen in all of earth's history
(02:46):
that didn't face a physicaldeath because God took him
directly from the earth.
And here we learn that Judequotes a prophecy directly from
Enoch, as Enoch was given directinsight into the last days by
God.
And since we're talking aboutthis, we should also talk about
(03:06):
the book of Enoch as well.
This prophecy that Jude quotesfrom Enoch can actually be found
in the book of Enoch, chapter 1, verse 14.
And we also know that the bookof Enoch is part of Jewish
literature.
It was considered an importantresource of study by certain
(03:28):
Jewish sects and it was oftenfound alongside the scripture,
as it was found alongside theDead Sea Scrolls.
However, the Book of Enoch isnot to be considered inspired or
canon for multiple reasons.
Inspired or canon for multiplereasons.
There are many books referredto in Scripture that are not
(03:49):
Scripture or inspired themselves.
For example, joshua 10.13refers to the book of Jasher.
However, there is no book ofJasher in Scripture, nor do Jews
nor Christians consider thebook of Jasher inspired by God.
Furthermore, while the book ofEnoch is titled under Enoch's
(04:10):
name, it is well known that itcontains works that are not by
Enoch and, in fact, werecompiled over many centuries.
The book of Enoch itself wasnot put together or compiled
until over 2,000 years afterEnoch lived.
And while the book of Enoch iscertainly an interesting read
(04:32):
and it was considered importantstudy material for Jewish
literature, it has never beenand never will be regarded as
canon.
It does not show signs ofdivine inspiration and, as I say
that we should recognize thatJude, under the inspiration of
(04:53):
the Holy Spirit, does quote thisone prophecy of Enoch as a
genuine prophecy from God toEnoch.
However, the book of Enoch as awhole is to be rejected as
inspired by God.
Now let's talk about the peoplethat Jude is speaking of and the
(05:15):
people that Enoch wasprophesying about.
The people spoken of here byEnoch in his prophecy are the
people that will be on earthwhen Christ returns physically.
They will have rejected thegospel and they will be
following the Antichrist.
(05:35):
They will have received hisdemonic sign on their foreheads
and on their hands.
They will have seen signs ofGod's judgment in the heavens
and on earth against all oftheir wickedness.
They will have heard the angelsin the air proclaiming the
gospel message.
They will have seen the twoprophets on the earth who have
(05:57):
called the world to repent oftheir sin and turn back to God,
and they will have seen the signof the Son of man in the sky.
Yet they refuse to acknowledgeJesus as their Lord and Savior
and in their hearts of blasphemythey form a resistance to Jesus
(06:20):
Christ under the Antichrist, under this man of lawlessness,
and they prepare to wage a finalwar against the coming King of
Kings.
These are the people that Enochprophesied about.
Also in Enoch's prophecy, we seethat the Lord comes with 10,000
(06:43):
of his holy ones.
What Enoch is prophesying hereare the hundreds of millions of
angels that will come with JesusChrist wreathed in fire.
Come with Jesus Christ wreathedin fire.
2 Thessalonians 1, 7 and 8 readTo grant you relief who are
(07:05):
afflicted as well as to us, whenthe Lord Jesus is revealed from
heaven with his mighty angelsin flaming fire inflicting
vengeance on those who do notknow God and on those who do not
obey the gospel of our Lord, jesus Christ.
Jesus also spoke about this inMatthew 24, 30, and 31, when he
said Then will appear in heaventhe sign of the Son of man, and
(07:29):
all the tribes of the earth willmourn and they will see the Son
of man coming on the clouds ofheaven with power and great
glory, and he will send out hisangels with a loud trumpet call
and they will gather his electfrom the four winds, from one
end of heaven to the other.
(07:49):
I don't want to get too deepinto eschatology, brothers and
sisters, but I do believe thatwhen Christ appears in the
heavens, it will be likelightning and everyone will see
him on earth, and that will bethe time of the rapture.
I'm not a fan or a proponent ofthe secret coming of Christ that
(08:10):
raptures the church prior tohis appearance in the sky which
brings about the wrath of Godupon the earth.
As Jude says Behold, the Lordcomes with ten thousand of his
holy ones to execute judgment onall and to convict all the
(08:32):
ungodly of their deeds ofungodliness that they've
committed in such an ungodly way.
It will be during this time ofthe wrath of God that our Lord
unleashes the final judgments onthe earth to convict all the
ungodly of their deeds.
(08:52):
The Greek word for convict heremeans to expose, to prove
guilty, meaning that JesusChrist will completely expose
the wickedness and error ofthese people, these wicked
apostates who have seen andheard the gospel message and
have seen the wrath of Godagainst the world and have seen
(09:14):
the Son of man in the sky andhave seen the Son of man in the
sky, but yet they snub theirnose at him in arrogance and
rebellion.
And these wicked apostates willbe judged according to their
wicked deeds and their wickedwords against God.
They're immoral, they'reirreverent of God, they're
blasphemous of God and theycontinue to store up more and
(09:38):
more wrath against them for theday of judgment when they will
be thrown into the lake of fire.
Romans 2.5 reads Because of yourhard and impenitent heart, you
are storing up wrath foryourself.
On the day of wrath, when God'srighteous judgment will be
revealed, then, jude focuses onthe attitudes of these apostates
(10:01):
and what comes out of theirmouths.
He says they're grumblers, they're malcontents, they follow
their own sin, they'reloud-mouthed and they show
favoritism.
So these apostates aregrumblers.
They grumble about theirproblems and they blame
everybody else, and even God,but never take responsibility
(10:21):
for their own lives.
Never finding fault inthemselves, they follow their
sinful desires.
They're prideful and in theirpride they brag about themselves
.
In fact, they're so puffed up,they brag about their own sin
and they'll flatter other peoplewhen it fits their selfish and
evil agenda to do so.
(10:42):
They are full of ungodly deeds, they're full of lies, they're
full of blasphemous speech, andone day it will all be exposed
(11:07):
for everyone to see.
Picking up in verse 17 of Jude,it reads following their own
ungodly passions.
It is these who cause divisions, worldly people devoid of the
Spirit.
Here, in verses 17, 18, and 19,jude reminds the church the
(11:27):
predictions of the apostles theapostle Peter, the apostle Paul
and the apostle John.
In their letters all warned ofa constant threat of apostate
teachers, as did Jesus Christhimself.
Here are some of those warnings, mark 13, 22 reads "for false
Christs and false prophets willarise and perform signs and
(11:48):
wonders to lead astray, ifpossible, the elect".
1 John 2, 18 and 19 readsChildren, it is the last hour
and, as you have heard, theAntichrist is coming.
So now many Antichrists havecome.
Therefore, we know that it isthe last hour.
(12:10):
They went out from us, but theywere not of us, for if they had
been of us they would havecontinued with us.
2 Peter 2, 1-3 reads Evendenying the Master who brought
(12:41):
them, bringing upon them swiftdestruction.
And many will follow theirsensuality and because of them,
the way of truth will beblasphemed.
In their greed, they willexploit you with false words.
Their condemnation from longago is not idle and their
destruction is not asleep.
(13:02):
These warnings from Jesus Christand his apostles aren't
something new, as it has alwaysbeen an issue amongst God's
people to be warned againstfalse teachings by the prophets
of old.
Some of those passages areIsaiah 28.7, jeremiah 23.14,
ezekiel 13.4, micah 3.11,zephaniah 3.4.
(13:27):
There has always been falseprophets and false teachers
trying to take advantage ofGod's people for their own
selfish gain.
We also recognize in verse 18that Jude says In the last time
there will be scoffers followingtheir own ungodly passions.
(13:48):
The reference to being in thelast time refers to the time
between Christ's first comingand his second coming.
That is the last times.
And Jude says there will bescoffers Again.
Both the Old Testament prophetsand the New Testament apostles
(14:08):
warn us against these scofferswho speak against God and God's
word.
These people who scoff at thevery words of God reveal that
they're unbelievers, thatthey're following their own
ungodly passions.
Their hearts are on unholythings of the flesh and they
scoff at those who have repentedof their sin and have a desire
(14:33):
to build the kingdom of JesusChrist.
The lives of these apostatesrevolve around the desires of
the flesh rather than the thingsof the Spirit that please God.
Romans 8.9 and Galatians5.16-24.
And then Jude brings his letterfull circle back to remind us
(14:55):
that this letter is a warning tothe church that these people,
these certain people, haveentered the church like hidden
reefs, that they're going tocause destruction upon the
church like a reef destroys aship.
These worldly people who arefocused on their own passions
rather than on the proclamationof the gospel of Jesus, pose a
(15:19):
threat to the church.
They're devoid of the Spirit.
They've not been born again.
They are not a new creationwith a new heart that desires to
please God Verse 20,.
(15:50):
But you, beloved 21, areencouragement for the church,
for those who are believers inJesus Christ.
Jude encourages them topractice their faith and their
spiritual discernment, to buildthemselves up in a most holy
faith.
Jude reminds the church Jesushas done all the work for our
(16:12):
salvation 1 Corinthians 3.1,.
And he's blessed us with everyspiritual blessing that we need
Ephesians 1.
3.1.
And he's blessed us with everyspiritual blessing that we need
Ephesians 1.3.
But we must daily walk in this.
We must increase our dependenceupon what Christ has already
given us, what Christ hasalready done for us.
(16:32):
In other words, we're to becomestrong in our doctrine.
We're to become strong in thegrace and the knowledge of Jesus
so that we can apply it to ourlives.
Some verses that refer to thisare Acts 20.32,.
2 Peter 3.18,.
Romans 14.19.
(16:54):
Jude says pray in the HolySpirit.
And the will of the Holy Spiritis the same as the will of the
Father and the will of the Son.
The Trinity is at work here.
Jude says pray in the HolySpirit so that you might do what
is the will of God and inaccordance with the message of
Jesus Christ.
(17:15):
Yet we don't always know how topray, and when we don't know
what to say, the Holy Spiritwill intercede on our behalf,
with God, the Father, praying inthe very name of Jesus Romans 8
, 26 and 27.
For the church to pray in theHoly Spirit means that we are to
trust in the providence and inthe character of God himself.
(17:37):
We're to seek his will, totrust in the providence and in
the character of God himself.
We're to seek his will, totrust in his power to save and
build up our lives.
As we do this, as we trust inthe timing of God, as we trust
in his power and in hischaracter rather than our own
will, we will find ourselves inthe love of God.
(17:58):
We will love one another.
We will even find ourselvesloving our enemies.
Practically speaking, thismeans we will be living in
obedience to God, just as Jesustold us in John 14, 15, if you
love me, you will obey mycommandments.
As we live out our lives insubmission to God, we will live
(18:21):
out lives of obedience to himand divine blessing will be
given, and every day that we'realive on earth is to be an
expression of God's mercy to us.
And this context of waiting forthe Lord Jesus Christ is the
ultimate expression of God'smercy to us.
And this context of waiting forthe Lord Jesus Christ is the
ultimate expression of God'smercy to the believer, because
(18:42):
one day we'll be resurrectedfrom the dead.
That is our hope and that isthe ultimate expression of God's
mercy.
The believer is to continue towait in hope and great
anticipation for this gloriousreturn of Jesus Christ, when we
will be ushered into eternity asbrothers and co-heirs with
(19:03):
Jesus Christ.
Philippians 3.20,.
1 Thessalonians 1.10.
Jude finishes with his doxology.
Now to him who is able to keepyou from stumbling and to
present you blameless before thepresence of his glory, with
great joy.
To the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
(19:25):
be glory, majesty, dominion andauthority before all time and
now and forever.
Amen, and now and forever Amen.
Jude's doxology is perhaps oneof the most beautiful and
powerful.
That expresses how our eternalsalvation is secure in Christ.
(19:46):
Jude says to him who is able tokeep you from stumbling and to
present you blameless before thepresence of his glory.
Before the presence of hisglory, jude shows how, if we're
trusting in our own power, weare weak, we will fail, but when
we surrender to the purpose andpower of Jesus Christ, we are
(20:06):
secure.
If it were up to us or our ownworks to maintain or keep our
salvation, we would lose it.
But praise God, it's not in ourhands, but rather we are in his
hands, for the Lord is faithful.
(20:31):
He is able to finish what he'sbegun.
Philippians 1.6.
Jude points to how the power ofthe Messiah will keep the
believer from falling away.
As we trust in him, he also candeliver us from temptation.
1 Peter 2.24.
It is the Holy Spirit that hassealed the believer and it's
through the Holy Spirit thatChrist enables that.
(20:51):
Christ establishes, keeps andsanctifies the believer.
Establishes, keeps andsanctifies the believer.
2 Corinthians 1, 21 and 22.
Ephesians 1, 13 and 14.
And one day Jesus Christhimself will present us
(21:13):
blameless.
Christ himself has establishedbelievers in his grace.
Romans 5, 1 and 2 readsTherefore, since we have been
justified by faith, we havepeace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Through him, we have alsoobtained access by faith into
this grace in which we stand andwe rejoice in the hope of the
(21:35):
glory of God Because we areestablished by Christ.
In his grace, believers willone day stand with him in glory.
Believers in Jesus Christ havebeen given the righteousness of
Jesus.
Philippians 3.9 reads Be foundin him, not having a
(21:58):
righteousness of my own thatcomes from the law, but which
comes through faith in Christ.
The righteousness from God thatdepends on faith.
2 Corinthians 5.21 reads Forour sake, he made him sin who
knew no sin, so that in him wemight become the righteousness
(22:19):
of God.
You see, beloved in the eyes ofGod, believers are blameless.
Through faith in Jesus Christ, believers have been given robes
of righteousness and made whiteby the blood of the Lamb.
Believers are not to trust inthe things of the flesh or the
things of this world.
Rather, their faith is to be inthe purity that comes through
(22:43):
the forgiveness and therighteousness in Jesus Christ
alone.
One day, when that trumpet ofthe archangel blows, there will
be a multitude from every nation, every tribe, every language,
dressed in white.
They will be praising Godbefore the Lamb and they will
come with Christ in his glory, with the angels.
(23:06):
As Jude closes, so will I.
To Jesus Christ, our Lord, beglory, majesty, dominion and
authority before all time, nowand forevermore.
Amen.
