Speaker 1 (00:01):
Straw media.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
There's one this season that you know, there's one that
I just go like, what were we doing?

Speaker 3 (00:11):
But also we were filming it in the middle of
the night, and.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Yeah, it's coming. It's my favorite one.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
Honestly, I can't remember if I started watching Yellow Jackets
because I heard it was this show where a girls
soccer team started eating each other in the middle of
the woods, or if that was a surprise that I
found out while I was watching it, But either way,
this show is better than anything I could have imagined.
I'm Caitlin and today on Pride we're talking to the

(00:42):
cast of Yellow Jackets. This show is honestly not something
I thought I would be this into, But between the
incredible cast, the mystery that keeps you guessing, and the
unapologetically messy and complex female characters, I was hooked from
the start. For those that don't know, Yellowjacket is a
psychological thriller and survival drama that follows a high school

(01:04):
girls soccer team whose plane crashes deep in the wilderness
in nineteen ninety six. What starts as a fight for
survival soon spirals into something much darker. Think tribalism, cult
like rituals, and yes, cannibalism. The show jumps between two timelines,
the past, where the girls are forced to do whatever
it takes to survive, and the present, where they're now

(01:26):
adult survivors struggle with the haunting secrets of what really
happened out in the woods. It's equal parts mystery, horror
and psychological drama, and trust me, this show will mess
with your head in the best way. With season three
on the way, I caught up with the cast to
talk about the show's incredible queer representation, its raw and

(01:47):
unfiltered portrayal of survival and trauma, and all the dark
twists and turns we can expect next. And of course
I had to ask about their most WTF moments on
set because we know this show takes things to wild places,
so let's get into it.

Speaker 5 (02:15):
First.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Up, I sat down with Sammy hen Ratty, who plays
the one and only in Misty. We talked about how
Yellowjackets helped her to come out and the growing queer
representation on the show. Plus we chatted about how she
nails Misty's unsettling chip or energy even when things get
disturbingly dark. So this is such a female led cast

(02:37):
it also has amazing queer representation on and off the screen.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
So what does that mean to you to be a
part of Oh my gosh, it means so much. It
honestly means more than I think I knew signing on
to the project.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
I didn't know.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
How this show was going to affect me the way
it has. And I came out myself, like during season
one as bisexual, and so it was just creating a
space that I fell comfortable to do that, and also
being okay to question parts of who I was and
who I am, and that's okay to do and it's
okay to not know too, And you know, and I

(03:11):
think that this show is a great representation of just
accepting yourself of where you're at. And you know, we
support female rights and wrongs here, so.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Everyone's kind of finding themselves even amongst all the darkness.
So are we going to see more gay representation on
screen this season?

Speaker 5 (03:29):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Yes, it's very gay this season, and I'm very excited
for everybody to see what's in store.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
My last question, Misty has such an iconic smile.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
She's always trying to be happy amongst everything.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
So how do you kind of perfect that emotion with
so much darkness happening.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
You know, all of my stuff with Misty is there's
certain things that even with my walk when I have
like the wig on, and when I'm in my you know,
I've got contacts and glasses, and like it's such a
character that like I don't even really notice sometimes when
I do certain things. But I think more than anything
is just leading into this like like this youthfulness about her.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
You know.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
So when she smiles, it's like she like, is it's
this young, like really wanting to be accepted thing, you know,
and then also has a different smile when it comes
to she just got her and now she's like okay,
and then she's gonna keep that though in the back
of her mind later on, you know.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Next, I got to chat with Kevin Alms and Alexa
Barajas about what it's like being part of such a
female led, queer inclusive show. We also got into how
they prepared for those deeply emotional scenes. And if you've
seen any of season three then you know what I'm
talking about. So obviously this show is so female leading,

(04:47):
and it also has such great queer representation. I don't
think that like when it first started, everyone knew, you know,
the span that it was gonna have. So what does
that mean to you both?

Speaker 5 (04:56):
I love it. I'm so excited for everybody it is.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
It is so cool to kind of see a show
that champions everyone in such a like everyone gets the
right screen time, everyone gets their moment, everyone gets to
feel really like the weight that their role has, and
like that's really great that there's so much representation on
this show and incredible actors to help with that, and
it just elevates it to another level. Uh yeah, it

(05:19):
gives me chills, Like I feel so lucky to be
on this show. It's crazy.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yeah, agreed.

Speaker 6 (05:24):
I'm so excited that everyone we get to see even
more of it this season. I think that this is
the show has really given a voice everybody in that sense.

Speaker 4 (05:33):
Absolutely, And you're both of your characters really go through
a lot, especially in the beginning of this season.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Right, Yeah, you're fun.

Speaker 5 (05:40):
There's not you're not crying or anything.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
It's it's totally chill.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
So just really, how did you prepare for those like
super emotional roles.

Speaker 6 (05:48):
Music, I think wearing like the big headphones that zone
everybody out and just listening to songs that kind of
put you in the mood, just really like allow you
to drop into it.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, everyone's kind of learned to how each person needs
to prep for those kinds of scenes. For me, it's
like i gotta walk away until action pretty much like
I'm by myself for a lot of that. I'm walking
and I'm pacing because it's just like it's so heavy
in the material that we do and we have to
do our best to do it justice because I think
the writers spend so much time and love and care

(06:19):
on the script, and I really think the actors on
this show like are so good at giving each other space.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
So it's cool.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Yeah, Jasmine Savoy Brown is a queer icon on and
off the screen, and I needed to know everything from
the importance of messy, flawed female characters to how Yellow
Jackets continues to push boundaries in its storytelling. Plus she
talks all about her new podcast today in Gay and
her new music. I have to ask, obviously, this is

(06:46):
such a queer led, female led cast on you characters
on and off screen, So what does that mean to
you and how is your your view of that kind.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Of change as we've seen more of these characters.

Speaker 5 (06:56):
How's my view of what change?

Speaker 4 (06:57):
Just? You know, like, I don't think we knew the
extent of the representation when this first started to where
we are now.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
So just how are you feeling now in season three?

Speaker 7 (07:05):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (07:05):
I'm so proud, Melanie Lynsky Queer Icon.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
I am so honored to be a part of such
a queer and female show. And not just that there's
so many not just that it's a show that's about
so many women and girls, but that these women and
girls are allowed to be messy and strong and fucked
up and manipulative and evil, cannibalistic. Usually, even when we

(07:31):
get to focus on girls, they're like that kind of undone,
they're like pretty bit messy, But here they're like gross
and horrible, and we deserve to see that and that
is really cool.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
Yeah, we deserve their rights and their wrongs. We support
all of it. What are you really looking forward to,
even outside of this show, just for this year?

Speaker 5 (07:52):
Oh, I have an EP that I'm going to be releasing.
I know I've been saying that, but it's true.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
Okay, I've filmed four of the five music videos.

Speaker 5 (08:00):
It's very queer, very fun.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
All of the songs are about people that I dated
for like three weeks or less in the summer of
twenty twenty, like in my whole era turned it into neapy.
It's like the most saffick thing I've ever said, and
I'm really excited to share that with the world in
my podcast today and gay y'all, I have never been
more proud of anything I've ever done. Part of that

(08:26):
is because I think that this podcast is really important
and we deserve somewhere to tune in every day to
hear headlines that are affecting our community. But also, and
I say this with pride, everyone is being paid the
same as a producer. That's something that I want to
see happen in this industry. Everyone on the team makes
the same hourly rate. It doesn't matter what their position.

(08:46):
Everyone on our team is queer, and so that means
that actually our executive assistant.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Speaking more than everybody else, as she should because she's.

Speaker 5 (08:53):
Working more hours than everybody else.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
And I just think that if you're gonna make something
and like talk a talk, you have to walk the fuck.
And I hope that others will start doing what I'm
doing and like fucking pay people FERI's not that.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
Hard Melanie Lynsky is a true legend, and she joined
me to talk about Yellowjackets and what it means to
her from the way the show gives fully realized young
female characters they're due. How season three shocked even her

(09:29):
with what Shawna is up to next.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
I'm a big fan of the show.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
I feel like when we first started, we didn't really
know the trajectory that this show is truly going to
have and the representation of women and queer people on
and off the screen that it really carries.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
So what does it mean to you to be a
part of that.

Speaker 8 (09:45):
It really means a lot to me. I would have
a very hard time being on a show that did
not have any kind of representations, So it's very important
to me. I feel very pretictive of those characters, and
I think it's great, Like I really love the first
time I read the script, I was really struck by
how fully realized all the younger characters were. They weren't

(10:08):
just like stereotypes or archetypes, or the mean girl or
the sporty one. They were all all of those things.
And that was my favorite thing about the script when
I read it, It's like, these will feel like human beings,
which is kind of rare, sad to say.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
Yeah, and a lot of the characters obviously have crazy
storylines when you're going into yours, particularly are you ever
really surprised on what Shauna is up to?

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Yeah? This season.

Speaker 8 (10:35):
I was really surprised this season. I was like, what
am I doing?

Speaker 5 (10:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (10:41):
It gets really crazy, but it's also fun, like's she
lets herself be a bit wild.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
And one couple you can't help a troop for on
this show is Van and Tai, even though like everyone else,
they're extremely messy and by season three we don't really
know why or when they broke up after the accident,
but I'm honestly hoping we get to see them happy
once again. I spoke with Tawny Cypress, who opened up
about the show's commitment to queer storytelling and what it

(11:12):
means to see an older queer couple like Tysa and
Van on screen. This show is obviously very female led,
but it also has great queer representation.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
So what does that mean to you to be a.

Speaker 9 (11:22):
Part of Yo as somebody who stands under the LGBTQ
plus umbrella being a kid in the nineties, It's everything
I wish I had representation like this, you know, I
wish I saw characters that look like me that made
loving women okay.

Speaker 4 (11:42):
And we're definitely gonna get to see more of you know,
tysaen Van's relationship after the incident, We're gonna kind of
find out what happened.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
So what can you kind of tease? What are you
excited for fans to see?

Speaker 9 (11:52):
Oh, I just got I want you guys to fall
in love the way I fell in love with her.
I want you guys to see the love story that
we we tried so hard to that Jazz and.

Speaker 5 (12:01):
Live created to begin with.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
You know, yeah, I mean you mentioned a little bit
about just wanting to see these characters, like everyone deserves
to have representation, but also seeing, you know, an older
queer couple is not as represented as it should be.
So again, you know, how do you feel about that?

Speaker 3 (12:16):
It's amazing.

Speaker 9 (12:17):
I mean honestly, what we what we had growing up
and who I saw who I could relate to, is
nothing like what the new generation has to relate to.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
And I'm so happy for the new generation.

Speaker 9 (12:30):
We still have a long way to go, I know
that obviously, but like, I'm so happy that this new generation.

Speaker 5 (12:36):
Has a lot more.

Speaker 9 (12:39):
Representation to identify with and see themselves in. It makes
me very proud and I'm excited for the future.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Plus Live Houston, who plays younger Van, shared their goal
for twenty twenty five and what this cast means to them.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
I have to ask.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
I mean, obviously, going into the show, it's so female led,
but then also there's such great clear representation, and we've
seen that grow throughout the season.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
So how do you think that the show is kind
of handled just bringing in more storylines like that?

Speaker 7 (13:08):
It's it's clear that it's like a focus that the
show has and a priority that the show has, and
that's something that I'm stick to be a part of
and like it's it's a focus and a priority of.

Speaker 10 (13:17):
Mine and my own work as well. So it feels
good and.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
Just you know, the bonding on set is obviously so great.
We see the bonding of the characters. How has it
been working with the team?

Speaker 7 (13:27):
I say this all the time, but like, I think
we're very lucky to be in an ensemble of people
in our age bracket, Like actually that's not very common
to be in a team this big like of people
in like a similar situation as you, and we've grown
together a lot over.

Speaker 10 (13:44):
The years that we've been making this show, and that's
very special.

Speaker 4 (13:47):
And even outside of this show, what are you most
excited for this year?

Speaker 3 (13:51):
What are you trying to bring to twenty twenty five?

Speaker 10 (13:53):
Oh my god.

Speaker 7 (13:55):
Actually, I've been telling my partner that twenty twenty five
is the that I reclive.

Speaker 10 (14:03):
It's like it's like a joy of life, like a
French expression. I'm trying. I'm trying to be spontaneous. I'm
trying to have fun.

Speaker 7 (14:10):
I'm trying to like not get so bucked down and
like details or anxiety.

Speaker 10 (14:15):
So I just really want to be present. I don't
want to enjoy myself and I want to like be here.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
And I had to save this one for last because
it was chaotic in the best way. I talked to
Courtney Eaton, Kevin Alves, Jazmine Savoy Brown, and Live Houston
about their wildest moments on set. There was a time
on set, it can be from previous or season three
where you were just kind of like looked at each
other like, what are we actually doing right now?

Speaker 10 (14:39):
Literally everything literally every season.

Speaker 7 (14:41):
Oh so several times absolutely several memorable times.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Okay, yeah, they're all flashing before my eyes, but I
feel like we can't yet reveal them.

Speaker 11 (14:51):
Sure, but yes, most in season one, I think because
the tone. We hadn't seen anything yet, so we didn't
know like how camp it was, how dark it was,
and how fought to lean into things. So when we
were like howling at the moon, how like how animalistic
do we go?

Speaker 5 (15:12):
And then the Jackie scene was kind of pretty great.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
And then there's one this season that you know, there's
one that I just go like, what were we doing?

Speaker 11 (15:24):
But also we were filming it in the middle of
the night and.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
Everything, Yeah, it's going, Okay, what do you know what? Episode?
Just eight?

Speaker 11 (15:35):
Seven?

Speaker 8 (15:36):
Eight?

Speaker 10 (15:38):
Really?

Speaker 2 (15:39):
I think, yeah, there's like two, Yeah, there's two.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
There's yeah, I'll look off for it.

Speaker 5 (15:47):
I won't eat moores.

Speaker 8 (15:48):
Maybe I don't know next this year, Okay, well watch it.

Speaker 4 (15:58):
This show is dark, twisted, messy and queer and that's
exactly why we love it. With season three on the horizon,
I already know things are going to get even wilder.
Make sure you're following for more interviews with your favorite stars,
and if you haven't started watching Yellow Jackets, go watch
it now. Just maybe don't eat a snack while you
do it,
