Speaker 1 (00:02):
Legends History Channel time in thirty.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Mustling History chattel is the nineteen ninety five Royal Rumble
the worst Royal Rumble?

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Hmmm?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Possibly, But welcome to the history of the nineteen ninety
five Royal Rumble right here on the Wrestling History Channel.
Let's get into it because some fun facts about this event.
Eighteen out of thirty wrestlers and the Royal Rumble don't
continue with the company by the end of nineteenninety five,

(00:46):
think about that number. More than half of the wrestlers
are no longer employed by the WWE by the time
we get to December of nineteen ninety five. That has
probably the indication of how terrible this Royal Rumble is.
But we will let you decide. Because some people love
this event, some people hate this event. So let's talk

(01:06):
about the history surrounding it now. Before this pay per review,
Vince McMahon was found not guilty in the Sterroid trial.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Howelulia to Vince McMahon.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
But if you've been paying attention ninety three, ninety four,
even ninety two, these events have not been the caliber
Golden erab pay per views that remember of Hogetting, Body
Slim and Andre or Warrior versus Savage. This is we
are far beyond that. But I do love the new
generation because this is when I started watching wrestling, so

(01:37):
it has a special place in my heart. But the
reasoning behind bringing up Vince mc mann the Sterroid Trial
is because he was very heavy on celebrities in ninety four.
So we have Walter Payton, Leslie Nielsener Slim ninety four,
so overs series, you have Chuck Norris.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
William Shatner has.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Showed up in the WWF multiple times, but here Roy Rumble,
it's all about Pamela Anderson and Lawrence Taylor, more high
caliber celebrities. And listen the WWE, they had celebrities at
WRESTMANIU one and so on and so forth. This isn't
the first time celebrities have popped up, but this is

(02:16):
really the first time that the celebrities now are the
main stars in the storyline surrounding some of these things
versus the wrestlers are there. And oh, by the way,
there are celebrities here as well. First WrestleMania, you have
Holk cooking and teamed up with mister t Restauranty, Piper,
mister waltonder Full, Paul Orndorf, Mohammad Ali's involved, Lebarashi's there.

(02:37):
There's a lot going on with Sidney Lauper obviously at
that event. But Roy Rumble ninety five, Pamela Anderson is
on the most popular show in the world, bay Watch,
and it's not for the plots. It's because, well it
might be for the plot, it's really all about slow
motion running down the beach with.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Your let's just say it, with your boobs go up
and down in slow motion.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Multiple television shows, even Friends made fun of this. Just
nobody was watching Baywatch for the storylines. Okay, they were watching.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
For the slow motion and that hassle huff Oh, that
hassle huff. I digress.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
So really, in reality, this pay per review is building
because the winner of the Roy Rumble is gonna go
to WrestleMania get a world title shot. But they also
are going to have Pamela Anderson walk them down the
aisle at WrestleMania eleven.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Does that happen?

Speaker 2 (03:33):
No, it doesn't, it doesn't. We'll get to that pay
per view later on though. But the beginning of this
Roy rumbol is hilarious because a limousine pulls up and
it's pam Anderson. She comes out and boy oh boy,
people are texting me, boy oh boy.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
All the wrestlers are just waiting for her to pop
out of that limousine.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Oh braby, guys, DNK dink, Mabel By Talk, I want
you all three ooh harsh, Pamela Anderson, yeah baby, yeah, bonus.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
So that's what's going on here.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
I don't mind the celebrity hook of any of this,
because that is what wrestling is all about, with the
WWE bringing celebrities, sometimes a listers like Pamela Anderson, sometimes
d listers like a bunch of random people during the
raw guest general manager era of the WWE.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yuck. Now, heading into this pay per view, we are
on Diesel Power. Diesel's our world champion.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
He won it three days later after Survivor Series nineteen
ninety four, where he officially turned babyface. Brett Hart lost
the title to Bob Becklan. So we're getting Brett Hart,
the former champion, taking on Diesel, the current champion. Now, remember,
Diesel's a brand new babyface. We don't want the fans
to boo him.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
What should we do? Should we put him against a
major heel?

Speaker 2 (04:58):
No?

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Oh no, let's put him against Brett Hart, our formal champion,
and there everybody loves. Mm hm. Not the best idea.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Now a lot of things are surrounding Diesel at this
point because Vince McMahon wants Diesel to be his new
hule Cogin. Now, remember we already tried this experiment with
Lex Luger. Now we didn't put red, white and blue
tights on Diesel. But now we're smiling. Now we're kissing babies.
Now we're high five and everybody is completely change from
the badass, big daddy cool Diesel beating people up.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Now he's beating people up, cheering and slapping hands.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
But at the same time he's constantly getting beat up
because you gotta be sympathy for your baby face is right,
constantly getting beat up in his matches.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Work on that leg, work on that leg.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
And of course backstage issues will occur here because Diesel,
like I think a lot of people thought, was he
wasn't ready for this position. He's been in the wa sends,
let's say like a little bit after WrestleMania Rustman in nine.
That is so nineteen ninety three. May of ninety three,
Diesel makes his appearance. Now he has been in WCW's

(06:12):
vine Vegas and OZ and things of that nature. But
now he has a gimmick and it's working. So he's
only been around since ninety three. Now he's your world
champion heading into ninety five. Some wrestlers, which I could
see why they're upset with this. They're upset because they've
been here, they've wrestled for years. They want the shot,
they want the world title.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
I get it. Jealousy, it's a lot of heat landing
on him.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Plus Shawn Michaels, according to rumors, he's upset about this.
You know, he's been here, he's busting his ass. He
wants me world champion two. Don't worry, Sean, you'll get
it in a year. But here it's all about Diesel
that's supposed to be Hbk's bodyguard helping him within the
world title.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Opposite things happened there. You know, there's some friction there.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
But obviously I think it's competition amongst friends and the
click our friends still to this day as I record this,
So in reality.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
That's just you know, competition. But Brett Harvest is Diesel.
It is not a good match. It is booked terribly.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Why because we have Diesel new babyface, Bert Hart babyface.
We need both men to look strong and not lose
cleanly at all. So the WWF decides to have Bob
Becklan and Owen Hard and just interference from Heels in
this matchup. So we're supposed to create this feeling of like,

(07:33):
oh well, the match would have been great and it
wasn't for bad guys. In Bert Hart's book, he says
that he went up to Diesel before the matchup and
said that he would work very aggressive during the matchup,
so Diesel would get the sympathy and maybe if the
crowd was going to be if he if he on
who they wanted to cheer for it.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
They would cheer for Diesel versus Brent. Now, if you
watch the.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Match, the fans are into both wrestlers, like there's it's
just kind of a split.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Say more Brett than Diesel. But there is no booing
of Diesel.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
There is no booing of Brett Hart. So they were
trying to avoid crowd reactions.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
But what do you do here? But the click's influence
is very obvious at this event, and I.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Know over years you have seen so many shoot interviews
with Duke to Dumpster Drosie to Bam Bam Bigelo to
Tatanka to Irs. It's an endless list of wrestlers that
have said that the Click held down wrestlers pushes like
Shane Douglas, held down wrestles like Jeff Jarrett. They've always
said that the Click. Shawn Michaels, Diesel, Razor ramone one

(08:38):
two three Kit in Triple H were a group and
they constantly made sure that they were booked.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
In the right way.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Now, of course, you watch a WWE produced documentary say
about the Click or Triple Ah to Sean Michaels, it's
very heavy on the Well, we were just working as
hard as possible, so Vince believed in us, which might
be the case too. But what also might be the
case is you are using a five man influenced group saying,
like listen, we're putting on great matches, so why would
you have anyone else get pushed?

Speaker 3 (09:06):
You should only push us.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Shawn Michael's wins, Roy Rumble Diesel is world champion after
being here only for a year and a half, So
I can see why some people believe that, But that's
up to you to believe many of course, low card
wrestlers have upset about this. As they mentioned, it is
a competition. You want to be the best, so I

(09:28):
can imagine people being a little upset about over controversies. Now,
of course, there will always be claims that Shawn Michaels
wins the Roy Rumble for political reasons because technically then
we are setting.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
Up Sean Michaels versus Diesel. But in reality they.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Have a storyline that started off very easily. Hey, Sean
brought in Diesel is the bodyguard. Now Diesel has abandoned
Sean Michaels, he's sick of his evil ways. In reality,
Seawn Michael's superkicked Diesel in the face three times by accident,
and Diesel was finally fed up doing what Sean Michaels
wanted him to do. So Diesel turns babyface wins the

(10:04):
world title three days later, and here we are.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
That's what really happened.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
So now this Roy Rumble is different because in the
past we've had ninety seconds, we've had two minute intervals.
Different rumbles have different intervals. This one sixty seconds. So
if you ever want to have a WrestleMania excuse me
a Roy Rumble marathon. This is the one to watch
because you can watch this in thirty two minutes.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
That's it.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
It's all you need is a half an hour to
sit down and watch this event. Now, every ninety seconds
was sometimes long. Two minutes was extra long, but here
we are with sixty seconds. Now. It keeps the match going,
prevents way too many low card wrestlers to keep clogging
up the ring and ruining the momentum of here comes

(10:52):
a star, Here's not a star, Here's not a star,
here comes a star.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
It kinda also highs how Finn the roster was.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Now I want to read who's in this Roy Rumble
because I said earlier eighteen of these wrestlers that do
not continue with the company by the end of nineteen
ninety five. So here's the order of the wrestlers.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
One is Shawn Michaels. Two is the British Bulldog. From
that point on we have.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Eli Blue, Duke De Dumpster, Drosie Jigglo, Jimmy Delray, Cioni
who is Barbarian, Doctor, Tom Prichard, Jink the Clown, Kwang,
Rick martel Owen Hart, timmoth Well from the Tag Team
well done, bush Whacker, Luke, Jacob, Blue King, Kong, Bundy, Moe, Mabel,

(11:40):
bush Whacker, Butch Lex.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Luger Man Tar he was my pick.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Al de Montoya, Henry O Godwin, Billy Gunn, Bart Gunn,
Bob Backland, Stephen Dunn, Dick Murdoch. What a weird moment
for him to show up here. Adam Baum fought to
and crush. That is your list of w WE superstars.

(12:09):
Out of that list, maybe seven our stars. And again,
I was knee deep in WWF. So I will always
say that I love nineteen ninety five for personal reasons.
But if you're watching this from an outside perspective, boy,
I can imagine you going. You know, someone told me
I should go back and watch all all these events.

(12:29):
I'm gonna watch one, and you watch this, said god
damn man, Like, what the hell are they thinking at
this event? I did just spend all their money on
Pamela Anderson and Lawrence Taylor instead of buying wrestlers and
bringing them in and training them. Maybe, but some people
say they love this event, some people hate it. We'll
figure that out in the comments, but I'm guessing.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Hate is a lot there.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Now. Tag Team titles are on the line, but it's
the finals of a tournament. Because guess what, folks shove
Michael show my in Diesel.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
Let's roll my words back a little bit. Seaw Michaels
and Diesel.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
We're the tag team champions heading into Survivor Series nineteen
eighty four. Well, guess what when Diesel and Shawn Michaels
break up, they vacate the tag team titles, so that
now we're gonna crown new tag team champions here at
this event. Now, let me go through the tournament brackets
for you. We had Bamman Bigelow into Tanka defeat Men

(13:27):
on a Mission. The Headshrinkers defeated Owen Hart and Jimmy
Anvil Knightheart, which is a crazy upset. The Heavenly Bodies
they beat the Bushwalkers and the one two three Kid
and Bob spark Plug. Hollie defeated Well Done Bambab Bigelow
and Tatanka then defeated the Headshrinkers. The Heavenly Bodies lost

(13:48):
to the one two three Kid and Bob spark Plug Hollie.
Now it's the finals. Sitting at ringside is former football
player Lawrence Taylor, Bambab Bigelow into Tanka lose the man
to the one two three Kid and Bob Holly. Now
the big story about this match is one two three
Kid wanted Bob Holly to get the pin on Bam

(14:09):
Bam Biglow to give Bob Harley, you know, a relatively
new wrestler a rub, you know, give him some star power. Well,
Pat Patterson Vin McMahon were like, I don't think so.
One tooth three Kid is a star if a star
pins Bam Bam. Then after the match, when Bam Bam
is really upset and he gets a fight with Lawrence Taylor,
that would make more sense than oh, well a job

(14:29):
or just beat me whatever. So we have new tag
team champions here one two three Kid and Bob Holly.
They lose them relatively soon as well, which is hilarious
to think that we had a giant tournament, but yet
we're gonna lose them very quickly. But Bam Bam Bigelow
on the outside, very upset about losing. Lawrence Taylor is
laughing at him, and this is our PR stunt where

(14:49):
a Bam Bam grabs Lawrence Taylor by the shirt and
they're tussling and they're fighting, and that's obviously gonna be
on the news the next day.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
Every single from ESPN, the Sports.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Center to you know, Channel five News, Channilo seven News,
whatever your news station is, they were covering Lawrence Taylor
and Bam Bam Bigelow's physical encounter because now obviously you
have a phone and go boop, then you know record
it and there's a million videos of it. At this
time there was not a million videos. So we're having
an opportunity to turn the news. Whoa Lawrence Taylor, He's

(15:22):
in the WWE wrestle Mania.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
I gotta order that. That was the logic and I
get it because at.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
This time in nineteen ninety five, you are really depending
on magazines, TV Guide, you know, local TV shows like
the news. That's what's giving you free publicity. Not social media,
not influencers, not YouTube or it's nothing like that. This
is all about using the news as a way to

(15:51):
attract new viewers.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
And it worked. Listen, you can say.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Whatever you want about Lawrence Taylor main eventing a wrestle meating,
it's Bam Bam Bigelow, what business down? But guess what
happened when Lawrence Taylor and Bam Bam got involved with
the Roy Rumble. Suddenly boom pr publicity, free publicity, all
over Roy Rumble, all over the ww They needed a hit.
They got their ass handed them. For the past two

(16:16):
years by everyone saying every wrestle's on steroids, every wrestler's
doing drugs, well, guess.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
What, maybe a lot worse.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
But we needed to re establish our profile here in
the world, and the WWF was trying hard to do that,
and they did it. Yeah, they did it with the
Lawrence Taylor Bam Bam, big little storyline.

Speaker 3 (16:35):
It chained the narrative.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
You weren't talking about steroids anymore. You were talking about whoa,
I know Lawrence Taylor and.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
He's involved with the WWE. What now?

Speaker 2 (16:46):
In that tag team tournament, I mentioned that Owen Hart
and jim Ny Avil Nightheart lost in the first round.
Owen Haart won the King of the Ring in ninety four.
He got a World Championship match against Brett Heart at
SummerSlam ninety four.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Ownh aren't in. He's been on a hot streak.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Starvesari's not so much his team loss, but Jim the
Avil nine has been at the side of own Heart
since the summer of ninety four.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Well, Jimmy Anvil is supposed to be here, th Roy
Rummel is gonna be.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
A participant, but Nightheart missed a few dates and was
released by the WWF. Now his spot is replaced by
Rick the Model Martel making a very rare appearance because
he was not around in ninety five at all.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
And I've heard so.

Speaker 2 (17:31):
Many stories about the n vol. You know, I always
appreciated his in ring work. I thought he was very
entertaining with grabbing the beard, laughing, being tag team to
partners with Brett Hart. His transition out of the Heart
Foundation with Brett really didn't I don't think resonated with
a lot of fans. He ended up being a character
called who already wear a mask and just wore like

(17:52):
pants all Vince Dion would make jokes.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
That who is that?

Speaker 1 (17:56):
Ha got it?

Speaker 3 (17:57):
Who? Who's his name? Do you get it? Yeah? We
got it?

Speaker 2 (18:01):
So there's that aspect. But there's always sold drugs, there's demons,
there's all types of things. Jimmy Avil nine Art didn't
live a clean life, and a lot of wrestlers didn't.
So I'm not saying he's evil for doing those things.
What I'm saying is, if you're running a company and
recently steroids and drugs were a big part of it
in the news, and one of your wrestlers missing dates

(18:23):
for maybe these reasons, well you are not going to
risk your entire company for one man saying Oh, I'm sorry,
I'll be there next week.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
Nope, we're good.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
We'd rather keep our company going and barely making a
profit than being out of business because we allowed someone
to come back when they clearly there's something going on
with them. The Anvil did not show back up until
nineteen ninety seven, reforming the Heart Foundation. Then he joined
DX for like a second, then he got low blown.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
He went to WCW. That was a sad moment.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
But other matches here you have Razor moromasus Jeff Jared Inner,
an old title now a lot of interference in this
match too, Honestly, like I wasn't feeling this match up
either Undertaker versus IRS. Now IRS attempts to repossess the
Undertaker's earned Apparently he didn't pay taxes on his earn

(19:17):
so here he is in a storyline. In reality, the
Undertaker beat the million Dollar Man's undertaker at SummerSlam in
ninety four. So now we're continuing on more Million Dollar
Man storylines because IRS is in the Million Dollar Corporation
with Bam Bam Bigelow with Tatanka, so there's a lot
going on there. Obviously, the biggest story of the evening

(19:42):
is Shawn Michael's winning the Royal Rumble, coming in at
number one and going all the way to the end.
And the most famous part this entire rumble is not
Brett versus Diesel, Lawrence Taylor, pamwa Anderson. It is Shawn
Michaels going over the top rope and you think the
match is over. The music starts to play British Bulldogs

(20:03):
celebrating like he won the match everything, But then Shall
Michaels appears back in the ring and tosses a bulldog saw.
Michaels never was eliminated. Why because they show us a
thousand different camera angles that Shaw Michaels, while it's tossed
over the top rope, only had one foot hit the floor.
He's holding onto the top rope, He's dangling.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
Back and forth, back and forth, back and fourth and
Aly has one foot.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
It is amazing to watch because you think what if
What if he went over the top rope and both
feet hit the floor and he couldn't hold on the
top rope and he just fell over.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
Then the whole illusions over.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Bulldog wins, he gets Pamela Anderson, he's going romania. But
in reality, Shall Michaels pulled us off perfectly, as mister
perfect might say, So this is one of the worst
roy rumbles of all time, but the moment of hearing Vince.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
One foot one foot, one foot.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
That adds the element of wow. This memory is probably
slammed into your brain because the WWF would show us
a thousand times how impressive this was with Shawn Michaels
with one foot and so many wrestlers from Matt car
Donut to Kofi Kingston were influenced by Shawn Michaels and
they always mentioned, especially around this time with the one

(21:30):
foot spot at the Royal Rumble. So, Shawn Michaels, you
have the click, and all those politics surrounding them can
say whatever you want, but don't deny the moment. You
can maybe love Shaw Michaels, you can hate Shawn Michaels,
but you can't deny that moment of the one foot
it's it's you know historic. As I mentioned earlier, this

(21:52):
match only goes thirty eight minutes. It's the shortest rumble
of all time. Now, there's a lot of records being
broken in this rumble because how short it is. So
let's think about this, okay. So eleven wrestlers lasted under
three minutes. Seven eliminated in under twenty five seconds. So

(22:13):
seven wrestlers only lasted twenty five seconds. Separately, Oldenheart and
Bob Backlan came down elimined in three seconds after Brettart
attacked them because they interfered in the Brett Heart Diesel
match earlier in the night. Bushwhacker Luke last twelve seconds,
Jacob Blue lasted seventeen seconds. Here your longest durations Seub

(22:37):
Michaels thirty eight minutes forty one seconds, British Bulldog thirty
eight minutes forty one seconds, Lex Luger eighteen minutes and
fifty one seconds, henry O Godwin fourteen forty, Al Damontoya
at thirteen twenty one, and Eli Blew exactly ten minutes. Yeah,

(22:58):
eighteen of the thirty Royal Rumble participants were gone, but
the end of nineteen ninety five. That really really shows
you how unstable the WWF roster was, where they're just
trying to figure anything out. Throw some shit at the wall,
because you know what we're gonna get. We're gonna get dentists,
we're gonna get evil teachers, We're gonna get a lot

(23:23):
of bizarre storylines and wrestlers in the next few years
to finally get into that attitude era. Even the aide
era has PMS and meat and sexual chocolate pans being born.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
Like.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
There's a lot of bad there too, and we will
get to that eventually. But on this show, the most
important thing is Shawn Michael's in the one Foot, The
one Foot, the one Foot.

Speaker 3 (23:47):
It's it's amazing. It's just so funny that whoever the
audio guy was playing the music, all right, bulldog one,
play his music. Oh shit, and he just gets to stout.
Shawn Michaels just enters and then you hear Howard Wrinkle
Sean Michaels all we had one foot.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
And HBK wins, but Diesel he did not look like
a strong champion leaving this event.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
Shawn Michaels, though, stole the show. Pam Anderson.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
Eventually Jenny McCarthy will get involved here as well. So
it's just it's a very bizarre rumble to start ninety five.
But it's not a bad way because this is the
you know, people say ninety six by be Shawn Michaels.

Speaker 3 (24:32):
His best year.

Speaker 2 (24:33):
Ninety five is Shawn Michael's breakout year. He's been good,
but he becomes great here. Storylines when he gets concussions.
The matches he has is that winning championships, being injured, returning,
being injured again. In one year from now, Shawn Michaels
will win the roy Rumble again and it will be

(24:55):
a babyface run and it will be incredible. But I've
show Michaels this was the start of something new and
the one Foot really began everything about this. But Pam
Anderson and Bam Bam Bigelow might have stolen the show here,
they might have stolen the show.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
But there you go the history of.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
The nineteen ninety five Royal Rumble right here on the
Wrestling History Journal. Let me know what you think of
the event. Do you love it, do you hate it?
Let us know here, But thanks for being here. I'm
steen fall have a wonderful day and we'll see you
next time.

Speaker 3 (25:29):
Bye bye.

Speaker 1 (25:33):
Let you see.
