Drained wetlands are a common site on prairie farms, despite science showing sloughs and marshes can provide many benefits including groundwater filtration, flood and drought mitigation, and habit for birds and animals.
Fortunately, in many cases, a wetland can be restored to its previous function simply by plugging the drain.
