Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hi there and welcome
to Proverbs 31 Wannabe, where we
discuss biblical womanhood andour constantly busy and
sometimes crazy daily life.
I'm Alexis Heaslip and, as awife and mom of two, I am always
striving and praying to be aProverbs 31 woman of faith.
Hi guys, you know sorry forthat little break I had.
I know I took a couple weeksoff, but between getting ready
(00:27):
for Easter and just reallytrying to be present with my
kids during this time of tellingthem the story of Jesus's
ultimate sacrifice, I felt likeI just needed to take a little
pause.
But I am back now.
My kids me discipling my kidswill always come first, and then
(00:51):
my son was off for his Easterbreak.
So between those two things Ijust felt like I needed a little
break.
But now that I'm back, I am soexcited we are going to be
finishing our Connecting theDots series today.
Today is our last episode ofthis series.
(01:11):
Can you believe it?
We're at 16 episodes ofConnecting the Dots between Old
and New Testament and today weare going to be talking about
how our King, jesus, is a kingwho was pierced.
So let's dive on in y'all.
We have a lot to talk about.
So, through all of the thingswe've talked about in the last
(01:32):
16 weeks, and it's culminatingto this fact that Jesus, our
Messiah, is King, and this is atheme that we see throughout all
of scriptures.
For example, Psalm 2, verse 6tells us this I have set up my
(01:54):
King upon Zion, my holy mountain, and again in the book of
Psalms, psalm 72.
I want us to read this psalmtogether and I like how the
title of this psalm in the Treeof Life version is called A
(02:16):
Powerful King for the Poor.
This psalm tells us of SolomonGive the king your judgments, o
God, and your righteousness tothe king's son.
May he judge your people withrighteousness and your poor ones
with justice.
Let the mountains bring shalomto the people and the hills
righteousness.
May he vindicate the poor ofthe people, save the children of
(02:39):
the needy and crush theoppressor.
Let's pause there for just asecond.
So, our King Messiah.
These first five verses give adescription of what type of king
he is going to be.
In the Old Testament, we aretold that this king, messiah,
king, is not one that's anoppressor, not one that is
(02:59):
vengeful, not one that is evil, but this is the king who defends
the poor, which is like thecomplete antithesis of what we
typically think of when we thinkof a king um, and I think
that's really important, becausea lot of people have this false
narrative that the oldtestament god and I'm using
(03:22):
quotation marks there isdifferent from the quote-unquote
New Testament God, and that'sjust not true.
God is God throughout scriptureand he's consistent, and I feel
like there's a lot ofmisunderstanding about that.
A lot of people try to say thatthe way that God is described
(03:44):
in the Old Testament isvindictive I've heard that word.
I've also heard that he can betyrannical, that people describe
God as violent, and that isjust not the case.
Our God is a God who lovesjustice, but he's also a God of
mercy.
But you know what?
A lot of the people who try tosay these things about who God
(04:07):
is in the Old Testament don'teven actually take the time to
read it, and that's why this isso important for us as
Christians, to be in the Word ofGod and not just the New
Testament.
The Bible is a whole book andnot two separate books.
(04:27):
It's all connected, and that'swhy I've been just saying how
important it is that we shouldbe connected in the entirety of
the word and be connecting thesedots throughout scripture,
because it's a whole book.
So let's continue on with versesix.
May he be like rain falling ona mown field, like showers
(04:50):
watering the ground.
Let the righteous flourish inhis days.
Let shalom abound till the moonis no more.
May he have dominion from seato sea and from the river to the
ends of the earth.
Let desert dwellers bow beforehim and may his enemies lick the
dust.
May the kings of Tarshish andthe islands bring tribute.
(05:10):
The king of Sheba and Sabaoffer gifts.
So let all kings bow downbefore him and all nations serve
him.
As we've talked about in thepast couple of episodes, our
Messiah King, as described inPsalm 72, is going to be a king
of all the earth and all nations.
Every tribe, every king willcome to worship him, for he
(05:36):
rescues the needy crying forhelp, also the poor and the ones
with no helper.
He will take pity on the poorand needy, and the souls of the
needy he will save.
And I'm just going to stop here.
There's a couple of verses leftin Psalm 72, but this is the
point is that he is here for theneedy, he is here for the poor,
(05:59):
he is here for those crying out.
And just to skip to the lasttwo verses, in verse 18, we're
told that the whole point ofMessiah King being here is for
this.
Blessed be Adonai Elohim, godof Israel, who alone does
wonders.
Blessed be his glorious nameforever.
(06:19):
May all the earth be filledwith his glory.
Amen and amen.
So the whole point of this kingwho was going to reign is that
the glory of Adonai be on earth.
And we hear this beautifullyechoed in two prophets Zechariah
14, verse 9, we read this aboutour king.
(06:45):
Let me find it.
Adonai will then be king overall the earth, and that day
Adonai will be Ahad and his namewill be Ahad.
His name will be one one, andthis is reinforced in the book
(07:14):
of daniel.
Now, what's interesting is, um,depending on your um, depending
on your translation of the bible, the book of daniel might not
be placed with the otherprophets.
Um, some some books of thebible or not.
Some books, some translationsof the bible, put daniel like
the tree of life version.
(07:35):
Uh, put daniel in writing inthe writings section, um, which
I think is really interesting, and they don't put them.
He's not put with the otherprophets, but he's in a separate
category called the writings.
So just so you know, if you'relooking at different
translations, the order might bea little different.
(07:56):
So, daniel 7, in verses 13 and14, this is one of the
prophecies that daniel hears um,I was watching in the night
visions, behold one like a sonof man coming with the clouds of
heaven.
(08:16):
He approached the ancient ofdays and was brought into his
presence.
Dominion, glory and sovereigntywere given to him that all
peoples, all nations andlanguages should serve him.
His dominion is an everlastingdominion that will never pass
away, and his kingdom is onethat will not be destroyed again
(08:38):
.
The emphasis on jesus's uh, ormessiahs, because they didn't
know his name.
Is Jesus at this point?
Eternal kingship, this idea ofeternal kingship, and there's a
lot of New Testament scripturesthat show that our Messiah is
king.
Let's go through them, becauseit's really important for us to
(09:03):
see all these connections.
That's the whole point of thisseries that we've been doing
together.
So flip with me to John 18, andthis is during Jesus's trial,
and he's before Pilate, andPilate is interrogating Jesus
(09:28):
because he wants to know thetruth.
So listen to this and, startingin verse 33, so Pilate went
back into the praetorium calledfor Yeshua Jesus and asked him
are you the king of the Jews?
Are you saying this on your own?
Yeshua answered or did otherstell you about me?
Pilate answered I'm not a Jew,am I your own nation?
(09:51):
And ruling priest Kohanimhanded you over to me.
What have you done?
Yeshua answered my kingdom isnot of this world.
My kingdom is not of this world.
If my kingdom were of thisworld, then my servants would be
fighting so that I wouldn't behanded over to the Judean
(10:11):
leaders.
But as it is, my kingdom is notfrom here.
So Pilate said to him Are you aking?
Then Yeshua answered you saythat I am a king.
For this reason I was born andfor this reason I came into the
(10:32):
world, so that I might testifyto the truth.
Everyone who is of the truthhears my voice.
So Jesus makes it very clearand that was his whole message
is that the kingdom of God is athand and he's not just a king
(10:52):
of the earth like an averageking.
He is different andunfortunately, pilate did not
understand this.
He did not grasp what Jesus wassaying.
Understand this.
He did not grasp what Jesus wassaying and that's really sad.
He had this opportunity, but hejust didn't grasp it.
Now Paul gives us a lot ofdifferent explanations.
(11:17):
He gives us a lot of context, alot of thoughts on Jesus's
kingship.
So one of the verses that weneed to look at is in Ephesians,
chapter 4, verses 4 through 6.
And this is talking about theunity of the body of believers.
(11:38):
There is one body and one Ruachspirit, just as you were also
called in one hope of yourcalling, one Lord of faith, one
faith, one immersion, one Godand Father of all, who is over
all and through all and in all.
But to each one of us, gracewas given in keeping with the
(12:01):
measure of Messiah's gift.
Therefore, it says when he wentup on high, he led captive, a
troop of captives and gave giftsto his people, to his people,
and that's showing us that he isthe ruler over his people.
Again, if you'll turn with me toPhilippians, chapter 2,
(12:28):
starting at verse 8, we hearmore of what Jesus, our King,
embodied, his character and howit's different than what we
think of kings of this world, what we think of kings of this
world, starting at verse 8, hehumbled himself, becoming
obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
(12:51):
For this reason, god highlyexalted him and gave him the
name that is above every name, that the name of Yeshua.
Every knee would bow in heavenand on earth and under the earth
, and every tongue profess thatyeshua, the messiah is lord to
the glory of god the father.
So jesus is our king, but he'sdifferent than other kings
(13:16):
because he humbles himself todie for the sake of his people,
and that is a clear distinctionthat we need to remember, that
Jesus is not like other earthlykings who are caught up in greed
and power and wealth and fame.
And now, if you'll turn with meto the book of Hebrews, we get
(13:38):
even more of an explanation ofwho this king is Hebrews 12, and
we're going to start at verse25.
And this talks about our king'sunshakable kingdom.
See to it that you do notrefuse the one who is speaking,
(13:59):
for if they did not escape whenthey refused the one who was
warning them on earth, much lesswe escape if we reject the one
who warns us from heaven.
His voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised saying
Yet once more, I will shake notonly the earth but also the
(14:19):
heavens.
Now this phrase yet once moreshows the removal of those
things that are shaken, that is,created things so that we
cannot be shaken, so that whatcannot be shaken may remain.
So this is showing whatMessiah's true power is.
He has total control overcreation.
(14:41):
He's not just the king ofpeople, has total control over
creation.
He's not just the king ofpeople, he is the king of all
creation, and what he commandscreation to do, it will do.
And in Revelation we see thisgetting played out, of the
authority of the kingship beingplayed out.
(15:03):
I have two examples inRevelation and I just want you
to know Revelation is not a bookthat we should look at and be
afraid of.
I know it's intimidating if youdon't have the context, but now
we have.
We've been on this journey.
We have so much more context.
We've been connecting the dotsand once you start connecting
(15:24):
the dots of these themesthroughout the Bible of Messiah,
you'll realize that Revelationmakes so much more sense when
you have the whole picture andit's really encouraging.
And just to know that it's allspelled out throughout Scripture
.
It all points to Revelation.
So you'll see what I mean.
(15:46):
Let's dive in together andwe're going to read Revelation 5
, 1 through 10.
I saw in the right hand of theone seated upon the throne, a
scroll written on both the frontand back, sealed with seven
seals.
I also saw a mighty angelproclaiming with a loud voice he
(16:07):
was worthy to open the scrolland break its seals.
No one in heaven or on theearth or under the earth was
able to open the scroll or tolook into it.
I began to weep loudly becauseno one was found worthy to open
up the scroll or look in it.
Then one of the elders tells mestop weeping.
(16:28):
Behold the lion of the tribe ofJudah, the root of David has
triumphed and he is worthy toopen up the scroll and its seven
seals.
And in the midst of the throneand the four living creatures
and in the midst of the elders,I saw a lamb standing as having
been slain, having seven hornsand seven eyes, which are the
(16:51):
seven spirits of God sent outinto all the earth.
He came and took the scrollfrom the right hand of the one
seated on the throne.
When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and
the 24 elders fell down beforethe lamb, each holding a harp
and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the
(17:14):
priests, the Kedoshim and theywere singing a new song.
You see, these verses tie intogether everything that we have
been talking about how Jesus isthe Passover lamb, the spotless
victim, the perfect sacrifice.
He is our king and he willreign forever and again.
(17:56):
In Revelation, if you'll flipahead to Revelation 11, verses
15 through 19.
We read this about the seventhtrumpet.
Then the seventh angeltrumpeted and there was a loud
voice in heaven saying this thekingdom of this world has become
(18:19):
the kingdom of our Lord and ofhis anointed one, and he will
reign forever and ever.
And the 24 elders seated ontheir thrones before God fell on
their faces and worshiped God,saying we thank you, adonai
Elohei Tesvaot, who is and whowas, because you have taken your
great power and begun to reign.
(18:41):
The nations were enraged, butyour wrath, wrath, has come and
the time for the dead to bejudged, to reward your servants,
the prophets and the kedoshimand those who fear your name,
the small and great, and todestroy the destroyers of the
earth.
Then the temple of god inheaven was open and the ark of
his covenant appeared in histemple and there were flashes of
(19:03):
lightning and this beautifulpicture of how I love, how it
says that we worship you, adonai, who was and who is, and the
things that happen during thisworship of and of what his
(19:27):
kingship will look like, oflightning and rumblings of
thunder.
It reminds me of Moses on MountSinai and the earthquakes and
the hail, and it just theimagery it all points back to,
imagery that we find allthroughout the Old Testament,
which is so amazing how, evenfrom Genesis to Revelation, we
(19:48):
can see this theme allthroughout, and these were
written hundreds of years apartby many different authors.
I mean all written inspired byGod, but different times,
different people wrote thesewords of God down, and yet the
theme is still there of Jesus'seternal kingship, and that is
(20:09):
beautiful.
And that leads me to the secondpoint is that he is our eternal
king forever and ever, andJesus confirms his kingship more
than any mortal king could haveeven comprehended.
I love how we're told that notjust Israel but all the nations
(20:32):
will bow down before him becausehe is this omnipotent ruler of
all.
And if that isn't just amazing,we've been talking about this
theme really for the last 16episodes of who Messiah is,
(20:54):
where he came from, what God'seternal plan was from the
beginning, all the way back inGenesis, all the way back in
Genesis, and it is clear thatJesus is the only answer.
He is the way, the truth andthe life, and no one can come to
(21:14):
the Father except through him.
He is our eternal King, jesus, ruler of all.
And not only is he ruler of all, but I thought this was a
really interesting point thatthis king, eternal king, is to
be seen by Israel as pierced.
As pierced because he ispierced for our transgressions,
(21:37):
something that a regular kingwould not have been willing to
do at all.
So we got to look back again, goback to the Old Testament, go
back in time and see what theseOld Testament writers prophets,
(21:59):
what they were told by God aboutwho he is, these small nuggets
of revelation that slowly pointus to Jesus.
So, zachariah, there's a lot inZachariah.
Like I said before, maybe oneday I'll do a whole study on
Zachariah, that'd be kind ofcool.
(22:21):
But Zachariah, uh verse, andchapter 12, verse 10.
And the title of this sectionis called mourning the pierced
one, and, um, it says this thenI will pour out on the house of
David and all the inhabitants ofJerusalem a spirit of grace and
supplication when they willlook toward me, whom they
(22:46):
pierced, and they will mourn forhim as one mourns for an only
son and grieve bitterly for him.
As one grieves for a firstborn, and this echoes back to the
Passover and the Exodus story.
Like the Egyptians mourn forthe firstborn who was slain
(23:11):
because of the plagues and theangel of death, the lamb was
pierced and slain and the bloodwas put on the post of their
house so that they could besaved.
And instead of mourning theloss of the firstborn, they
prayed over the sacrificial lamb.
(23:32):
The Israelites and the peoplewho did not believe in him
mourned over the loss of theirfirstborn son, son.
And we see again in another, from another prophet, the, in
the book of Isaiah.
Again, isaiah 53 is such apowerful passage of scripture
(24:01):
and if you want to really divein to what our suffering servant
, the things that he did for us,check out my Bible study, our
Suffering Servant, a six-weekstudy in Isaiah 53.
It just changes everything andI really go in depth into what
it means to be pierced.
But let's look at verse 7.
He was oppressed and he wasafflicted.
(24:23):
Verse 7 he was oppressed and hewas afflicted, yet he did not
open up his mouth like a lamb, led to the slaughter, like the
sheep before its shearers, issilent.
So he did not open up his mouthand if you jump down to verse
(24:43):
10, yet it pleased Adonai tobruise him.
He caused him to suffer, hecaused him to suffer.
And what's really justmind-blowing is, you know, we've
talked about a lot about thisPassover lamb, this Passover
lamb.
Well, during the Seder meal, when Jews celebrate Passover and
(25:06):
, as a Christian, my family andI have started to celebrate
Passover yearly when you look atthe matzah, the unleavened
bread that is used, you can seethese little markings in the
matzah and it's beautifulbecause it looks like the matzah
has been pierced.
And what a symbol.
(25:27):
And this is the bread thatJesus used at the Last Supper.
That this is.
And when Jesus said this is mybody, he was looking at the
bread that reminded them of theIsraelites' time in slavery and
said this is my body, which isto be given up for you, and it's
(25:52):
already been pierced, likeJesus' body would be pierced
during the crucifixion, and wesee this echoed in Psalm 22.
And we see this echoed in Psalm22.
In Psalm 22, where we get thefull story of a crucifixion of
(26:14):
Jesus' crucifixion way beforecrucifixion was even really used
as a form of execution.
But yet god knew all thedetails and gave it to us, way
before roman rome was ever inexistence, way before
crucifixion was used as a formof execution.
(26:35):
We are given all of thesedetails, psalm 22, 16.
My strength is dried up, Verse16.
Hands and my feet they piercedmy hands and my feet and, like I
said, the New Testament clearlyshows that our Lord King, jesus
(27:16):
, was pierced and is ourultimate King and he can only be
our eternal king.
He can only be our king foreverbecause he was pierced as our
ultimate Passover lamb.
And we see this played out inLuke, if you'll turn with me to
(27:36):
the book of Luke, in chapter 34,or not 34, excuse me, 24.
I read that wrong and we'regoing to see how everything
comes together.
Everything comes togetherStarting at 36.
(28:01):
Starting at 36, how Jesus, after he died and rose.
He shows that he was piercedand in his risen state.
While they were speaking thesethings, jesus, yeshua himself,
stood in the midst of them andsaid Shalom, aleichem, peace, be
(28:23):
with you.
But they were startled andterrified, thinking they were
seeing a ghost.
He said is myself, touch andsee, for a spirit doesn't have
(28:44):
flesh and bones, as you see Ihave.
And when he had said it, heshowed them his hands and his
feet.
But when they were still indisbelief due to joy and wonder,
he said to them do you haveanything to eat here?
They gave him a piece ofbroiled fish and he took it and
(29:06):
ate it in their presence.
Then he said to them these aremy words, which I spoke to you
while I was still with youEverything written concerning me
in Torah of Moses and of theprophets and of the Psalms must
be fulfilled.
Then he opened their minds tounderstand the scriptures and he
(29:26):
said to them so it is writtenthat the Messiah is to suffer
and to rise from the dead on thethird day and that repentance
for the removal of sins is to beproclaimed in his name to all
the nations, beginning fromJerusalem.
You are witnesses of thesethings and behold, I am sending
(29:47):
the promise of my Father uponyou, but you are to stay in the
city until you are clothed withthe power from on high.
So Jesus himself is saying look, if you just look at the
writings and the Torah and theprophets, I have fulfilled those
scriptures.
Look at my hands, look at myside Touch and see and believe.
(30:11):
And again, if you flip back toJohn, chapter 20, and then John
20, we see this emphasized againIn John 19,.
31 through 37, we read aboutthis sacrificial death that he
(30:37):
went through and how he ispierced like the Paschal Lamb.
It was the day of preparationand the next day was a festival
for Shabbat.
So that the bodies should notremain on the execution stake
during Shabbat, the Judeanleaders asked Pilate to have the
legs broken and have the bodiestaken away.
(30:59):
So the soldiers came and brokethe legs of the first and then
the other who had been executedwith Yeshua.
Now, when they came to Yeshuaand saw that he was already dead
, they did not break his legs, but one of the soldiers pierced
his side with a spear andimmediately blood and water came
(31:20):
out out.
These things happened becausehe who has seen it has testified
and his testimony is true.
He knows that he is telling thetruth so that you may also
believe.
These things happen so thatscripture would be fulfilled Not
(31:40):
a bone of his will be broken.
And again, another scripturesays they all, they'll all look
on him whom they have pierced.
And then, if you flip to John 20, starting at verse 19,.
We hear this it was the eveningon that day, the first of the
week, when the doors were lockedwhere the disciples were.
(32:04):
So this is a sunday evening.
For fear of the judean leaders.
Yeshua came and stood in theirmidst this is the evening of
messiah's resurrection, sunday.
And he said to them shalomaleihem, peace be with you.
After he said this, he showedthem his hands and his side.
Then the disciples rejoicedwhen they saw the Lord.
(32:28):
Yeshua said again to themShalom Aleichem, as the Father
has sent me, I also send you.
And after he said this, hebreathed on them and he said to
them Receive the Ruach HaKodesh, the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven, but but if
(32:54):
you hold back, they are heldback.
One of the 12, thomas, calledthe twin, was not with them when
Yeshua came.
The other disciples were sayingto him we have seen the Lord.
But he replied to them unless Isee the nail prints on his
hands and put my fingers intothe mark of the nails and put my
(33:15):
hand into his side, I willnever believe.
Eight days later, the discipleswere again inside and Thomas
was with them.
Yeshua comes, despite thelocked doors.
He stood in their midst andsaid Shalom Aleichem, peace be
with you.
Then he said to Thomas put yourfinger here and look at my
hands, reach out your hand andput it into my side.
(33:38):
Stop doubting and believe.
Thomas answered and said to himmy Lord and my God, yeshua,
said to him because you haveseen me, you have believed.
Blessed are the ones who havenot seen and yet have believed.
You see, my friends, even thedisciples doubted, and it's okay
to doubt, but Jesus wants us tobelieve.
(34:01):
Blessed are those who believeand do not see.
And he was pierced for ourtransgressions.
The disciples felt his hands.
They knew he was alive and notjust a ghost.
They felt Messiah's piercedhands and sighed.
And in Revelation 1, chapter 7,to conclude this epic saga we've
(34:24):
been talking about, we readthis Oops, I'm flipping over to
it.
This is what is said in thefinal book of the Bible.
Look, he is coming in theclouds and every eye will see
him, even those who pierced him,and all the tribes of the earth
(34:48):
will mourn because of him.
Yes and amen, yes and amen.
I love that yes and amen.
We have all sinned, we have allpierced him with our sins and
our transgressions.
But we have the opportunity toworship, to ask for forgiveness
and to bow down and profess thatwe need a savior and believe.
(35:12):
And these last and that is whatis just so great about our God
is that our God is a God ofmercy and love and he wants to
be our king forever.
So what are you waiting for?
Have you asked Jesus to be yourking?
As we close out and reflect on,have we really accepted Jesus
(35:39):
into our hearts?
Do we want to be one of hissubjects?
Have we chosen to follow him?
Over these past 16 weeks, we'velearned so so much about our
Messiah and who he is and why hecame, but we've really only
scratched the surface.
(35:59):
As believers, there's alwaysjust so much more that we can
learn, and that's why it is soimportant and paramount that we
are in the scriptures.
Daily, we are praying to ourLord.
Daily, we are walking in ourfaith with our brothers and
(36:20):
sisters in Christ in a communitywhere the Bible is lifted up
and where we can lift oneanother up, walk with one
another, rebuke when necessaryand speak the truth in love.
And scripture is just.
It's God-breathed and alive, and we need to have this solid
(36:45):
understanding of the scripturesin order for us to go out and do
and live our life in a way thatreflects his will, and we can't
teach our children and discipleour children, we can't do Shema
, we can't go out into the worldand do the Great Commission and
(37:10):
show others what it means to bea follower of Jesus and why
it's important, if we don't haveany understanding ourselves of
what that means.
So thank you, thank you, thankyou for coming on this 16-week
journey with me.
It's been a joy, it's been apleasure.
I hope this sparks yourcuriosity even more to do
research yourself, to dive intothe Word of God, to connect more
