Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hi there and welcome to Proverbs 31 wannabe, where we
discuss biblical womanhood andteaching truths in everyday
crazy life.
I'm Alexis he's slipping.
As a wife and mom of two, I amstriving and praying to be a
Proverbs 31 woman of faith.
Surprise, guys, I am doing twoepisodes this week.

(00:26):
Shabbat Shalom I am so excitedto be joining you, guys.
I feel like sometimes it's justfun to try out two episodes a
week, and this is one of theweeks where I just feel like why
not?
So just the other day we werediscussing the Semestianic
prophecy, where Jesus wasbetrayed by a close friend and

(00:51):
the depth of that betrayal andhow his heart must have been
broken.
And today we are going to talkabout a different type of
brokenness that our Messiah wentthrough, and this is physical
brokenness, physical suffering.
This is a lot of heavy stuffwe're going to be talking about

(01:15):
today, so let's get ready.
It's going to be intense, it'sgoing to be uncomfortable, but
absolutely necessary in orderfor all of us to understand why
Messiah matters.
So let's dive on in.
Okay.

(01:35):
So, picking up from last week,we know Jesus was forsaken by
his disciples.
They ran away and he wasarrested and he was brought
before the Sanhedrin and Pilate, and this is where things keep

(01:56):
on momentarily getting worse forour Lord.
And one of the things that ourMessiah Jesus had to physically
go through was being struck onthe cheek.
And this is actually prophesiedin the book of Micah.
Now, depending on yourtranslation, it could be one of

(02:20):
two verses.
It could be either Micah 4, 14or Micah 5, 1, it just depends
on your translation.
I'm using the Tree of Lifetranslation, so mine is Micah,
chapter 4, verse 14, but yourtranslation could be Micah 5, 1,
and the verse is the same, it'sjust the numbering that's

(02:41):
different.
And this verse tells us Nowgather your, empty yourself in
troops, oh, daughter of troops.
He had laid siege against uswith a staff.
They have struck the judge ofIsrael on the cheek Again.
In the Old Testament we hearabout this striking on the cheek

(03:03):
, which is an absolute insult.
Even today, to be struck on theface.
We see this two more places.
In Isaiah, chapter 50, we readin verse 6, I'm almost there.
We read this I gave my back tothose who strike and my cheeks

(03:29):
to those pulling out my beard.
I did not hide my face fromhumiliation and spinning.
And then again we read in thebook of Lamentations if you'll
turn with me there and we willbe looking at Lamentations
chapter 3, verse 30, which tellsus this let him offer his cheek

(03:55):
to the one who strikes him.
Let him have his fill ofdisgrace.
And you know, like I've saidbefore, striking, being striked
on the cheek, being hit on thecheek is one of the most
insulting things that you coulddo to another human being.

(04:17):
Even today, that's notsomething to be taken lightly.
That is an ultimate insult.
And we're going to see in theNew Testament that Jesus went
through this, unfortunately, more than once during this trial
time of his, before he was evencrucified.

(04:40):
So in Matthew 26, verse 67, andthe context of this is at the
moment, in this part ofscripture, jesus is in front of
the Sanhedrin, he's in front ofthe priests and they are finding
any reason to condemn Jesus todeath and we'll actually go back

(05:08):
a little bit to before, verse67, and they are trying to make
Jesus out as a blasphemer, although nothing that Jesus said
was blasphemy.
They just didn't want Jesus tocarry on because they were blind

(05:29):
to the truth.
And the king, not the king.
The priests asked Jesus pointblank are you the Messiah?
And Jesus responds as you havesaid.
Besides that, I tell you, soonafter you will see the Son of
man sitting at the right hand ofthe power and coming of the

(05:52):
clouds of heaven.
Then the priests tore hisclothes and said blasphemy.
Why do we need any morewitnesses?
Look, you've heard theblasphemy.
What's your verdict?
Guilty, he deserves death.
They answered.
Now let's really focus in onverse 67.
Then they spat in his face andpounded him with their fists.

(06:19):
Others slapped him and demandedprophesy to us.
You, messiah.
Which one hit you?
So not only were they hittinghim, they were verbally bashing
and insulting him.
And it's not just the Jews, theJewish people, the Jewish

(06:45):
priests that do this to Jesus.
We read further on in Matthewand Matthew 27, that the
governor's soldiers took Jesusand gathered the whole cohort
around him, starting in Matthew27, verse 27.
They stripped him and put ascarlet robe around him and,

(07:07):
after braiding a crown of thorns, they placed it on his head and
put a staff in his right handand, falling to their knees,
they mocked him saying Hail, king of the Jews.
They spat on him and they tookthe staff and beat him over and
over on the head.
So our Lord suffered muchphysical suffering early on in

(07:33):
this passion scene, early on inhis passion, he has suffered a
lot the physical blow on thecheek, as well as the
implication that people lookedso down on him that they were
willing to hit him in his face, which is so insulting, and you

(07:56):
already read this, we alreadyread this.
But not only was he struck, they spat on him, they spat on
him in his face and we read thatin Isaiah 50, verse 6, that you
would be spat on.
And this detail is importantbecause it's degrading.

(08:22):
It is degrading to spit onanother human being.
I don't know if you remember asa child, children like to spit
on things, and one of the firstthings that a parent teaches a
child is you never, ever, spitat or on another human being,
because that's disgraceful.

(08:44):
And yet the Roman soldiers andthe Jewish leaders spat on our
Messiah because they wereblinded about his true identity
and they were filled with anger, they were filled with rage and

(09:08):
they were filled with lies intheir mind about who Jesus was.
So Jesus was struck on thecheek and he was spat on, and
those are some physical things.
But he was also verbally mockedand verbally abused.

(09:30):
If you'll turn with me to thebook of Psalms.
Psalm 22 describes this momentof a suffering servant and we
read let's read verse eitherverse 8 or 9, or 7 and 8,

(09:50):
depending on your translation.
So in my version it's verse 8.
Actually, I can even go back toverse 7.
Am I a worm and not a man?
Am I a scorn of men despised bypeople?
All who see me mock me.

(10:13):
They curl their lips, shakingtheir heads, shaking their heads
, rely on Adonai, let himdeliver him, let him rescue him,
since he delights in him.
And that is exactly whathappened to our Messiah Jesus in

(10:38):
this dark and scary moment.
Turn with me to the book ofMatthew, where we will see this
played out in the Gospel, matthew 26, verse starting at 65

(11:02):
.
Then the priest tore hisclothes and said blasphemy.
Why do we need more witnesses?
Look at the blasphemy.
What's your verdict?
Guilty, he deserves death.
And they spat on his face andpounded him with their fists and
slapped him and mocked him, saying prophesy to us, messiah,

(11:23):
which one hit you Again?
It's that same verse of Jesusjust being absolutely and
utterly braided.
And this happens again inMatthew 27, starting at verse 11

(11:46):
.
Now this is Jesus standingbefore the governor, punctious
Pilate, and the governorquestioned him saying are you
the king of the Jews?
You say so, yeshua said, andwhile he was accused by the
ruling co-hanim and elders, hedid not answer.

(12:06):
Then Pilate said to him don'tyou hear how many things they
testify against you?
Yeshua did not answer not evenone word, and the governor was
greatly amazed.
Now, during the feast, thegovernor was accustomed to
release to the crowd oneprisoner, anyone they wanted.

(12:28):
At the time they had anotorious prisoner called Yeshua
Barabas.
So when they were gatheredtogether, pilate said to them
which one of you, which one, doyou want me to release for you?
Yeshua Barabas or Yeshua, called Messiah, for he knew that

(12:54):
they had handed him over out ofenvy.
While Pilate was sitting on thejudgment seat, his wife sent
him a message saying don't haveanything to do with this
righteous man, for today I'vesuffered many things in a dream
because of him.
Now the ruling priests andelders persuaded the crowds that

(13:14):
they should ask for Barabas anddestroy Yeshua Messiah.
But the governor respondedwhich of the two do you want to
release for you?
And they said Barabas.
Pilate said to them what will Ido with Yeshua, called Messiah,
execute him.
They all say what, why, whatevil has he done?

(13:38):
Pilate said, but they keptshouting and shouting Let him be
executed.
And then jumped down to verse31,.
When the soldiers gathered himand stripped him and put that

(13:59):
crown of thorns on him, theymocked him, falling on their
knees before him saying Hail, king of the Jews.
They spat on him and they beathim.
And when they finished mockinghim, they stripped the robe off
him and put his own clothes backon and led him off to be
crucified.
Now, what's really interestingand we're going to take a little

(14:24):
sidestep here is this characterof Barabas.
I don't know if you've everheard of this before, this idea,
but Barabas, although it seemslike this minor little moment in
the greater story of thepassion, is our salvation being

(14:51):
on full display.
Barabas was a vile man.
He was notorious.
Some historians say he was aninsurrectionist trying to set
revolts.
Some people say he was amurderer, but he was obviously a

(15:17):
guilty, sin-filled person.
And yet His blood was not shedon this day.
Instead, a spotless victim tookBarabbas' place.

(15:40):
Jesus took Barabbas' place.
The man who deserved punishmentwas set free.
And just like Barabbas, we tooare full of sin.
We too have done things thatdishonor the Lord.

(16:05):
We too, like Barabbas, have hadsinful and prideful hearts, but
God steps into the picture andtakes on the punishment so that

(16:29):
we don't have to, because heloves us.
And I feel like this part ofthe gospel, this part of the
passion, is so beautiful andcompelling, because Barabbas is

(16:52):
what we all are messy people, people who want to rebel because
of our fallen nature.
But God in His love redeems useven when we don't deserve it.

(17:16):
And if that doesn't make you ina weep, I don't know what will.
And I hope that thisperspective on Barabbas changes
the way you read the gospel andmakes you realize, if you've not

(17:39):
accepted Jesus as your Lord andyour Savior, that he is calling
out to you and he has alreadypaid the price for your sin and
shame and your guilt.
He was the ultimate guiltoffering on the cross and we,
like Barabbas, were set free.

(18:00):
So if you've not known Jesus, Ipray that you know Him and you
open your heart to Him.
End the side tangent.
But I just.
Whenever I read this passage,it really gets to me every

(18:22):
single time.
Unfortunately, this was not thelast time Jesus was mocked.
Jesus had carried His cross allthe way through the city and
outside the city gate, and hehad been nailed to the cross, a

(18:45):
humiliating death.
And while on this cross, jesusagain was being mocked.
While he's dying, jesus isbeing mocked.
Now.
Let's start at Matthew 27,verse 39.
Those passing by were jeering atHim, shaking their heads,

(19:10):
saying you who are going todestroy the temple and rebuild
it in three days, save yourself.
If you are Ben Elohim, comedown from the stake.
Likewise, the ruling co-hanim,along with the Torah scholars
and the elders, were alsomocking Him.

(19:30):
He saved others, they weresaying, but he can't save
Himself.
He is the King of Israel.
Let Him come down now from thestake and we'll believe in Him.
He trusts in God.
Let God rescue Him now if hewants Him, for he said I am Ben

(19:52):
Elohim.
Even the outlaws who wereexecuted with Him were
ridiculing Him In the same way.
So Jesus, while activelysuffering and dying and being
offered up as a sin offering andguilt offering for us, for the

(20:12):
world, for salvation, he wasstill being mocked, and Jesus
suffered this mocking up untilHis very last breath.
But he also suffered somethingso horrifying, and I feel like
it's also something, though, that we, as the modern reader,

(20:36):
overlook and have a lack ofunderstanding of how tremendous
this next thing that he wentthrough was.
And before Jesus was crucified, before he took up the cross,
our Lord was scourged.
Like I said, I feel like a lotof us don't have a firm grasp as

(21:01):
to what that fully means.
So we're going to talk abouttwo passages in the Old
Testament, talk about the NewTestament and then give a full
detail as to what a scourgingmeans.
So if you'll turn with me to thebook of Isaiah and first we're
going to be looking at Isaiah 56again, because I just feel like

(21:23):
it so eloquently states justthe depth of pain Jesus went
through I gave my back to thosewho strike and my cheeks to
those pulling out my beard.
I did not hide my face fromhumiliation and spinning.

(21:44):
I want to emphasize that.
I gave my back to those whostrike because this is what the
scourging was.
And how did he give His back?
What does that mean?
What was the depth of it?
Well, isaiah 53, verse 5, givesus some indication.
He was pierced because of ourtransgressions, crushed because

(22:07):
of our iniquities.
The chastisement for our shalomwas upon Him, and by His
stripes we are healed.
By His stripes we are healed.
Okay, so now we're getting somemore information.
By his stripes, we are healed.

(22:29):
What are his stripes?
Matthew 27, we read this inverse 26.
Then he released to themBarabbas and after he had Yeshua
scourged, he handed him over tobe crucified.

(22:53):
Then in the book of Mark, chapter 15, verse 15, we read
this wanting to satisfy thecrowd, pilate released Barabbas
for them and after he had Jesusscourged, he handed him over to
be crucified.
Again in the book of John, because it's important to

(23:13):
realize that this is notsomething that is mentioned once
.
This is mentioned in multiplegospel counts John, chapter 19,.
Chapter 19, verse 1,.
Then Pilate took Yeshua and hadhim scourged.
Now I feel like we understandwhat it means to be beaten,

(23:36):
because you know, we've readabout it.
But scourging is somethingdifferent.
Scourging is next level, to bescourged at the pillar.
It's more severe than aflogging.
It's more than just beingbeaten.
It is one of the most severeand horrifying punishments that
someone could go through, and itis so bad that the Romans would

(23:59):
use scourging as a form ofexecution because it was so
painful and so violent and sovile.
So it's not just your averagestick where you get beaten on
the back with, or a whip, andthat's it.

(24:21):
No, it's so much more than that.
First of all, the person who'sbeing scourged is tied, is
stripped naked and tied withtheir hands, or chained to this
pole so they can't go anywhere, they can't move and their back
is towards the person who isgoing to be doing the scourging.

(24:43):
And the tools that the Romanswould use to scourge people, it
wasn't just a leather belt or aleather whip or a stick.
No, no, no, it was a whip.
But at the end of the whip, attached to it, was metal and

(25:05):
leather.
And these pieces, when theperson would hit the person's
body and they would be hit fromthe neck to the legs, it would
dig into the person's flesh andrip out chunks of flesh and
would just shred the person'sbody, and that alone could kill

(25:32):
a person, because your bodywould loose a lot of blood, you
would go into shock, you wouldthrow up, you could pass out
during this and, depending onhow many times the person was
scourged, hit over and over andover again, that there alone

(25:54):
could kill you.
And if you think, you kind ofhave an idea, but don't.
The movie the Passion of theChrist has this scene depicted
and it's absolutely horrifyingbecause it shows every detail.

(26:16):
But I feel like it's sonecessary for us to fully
understand what Jesus actuallywent through because, like I
said, I feel like us as peoplewho live in 2024 and for a lot
of us who live in westernizedcountries, we do not see

(26:41):
violence like people did livingback in this time.
Yes, we do see violence on TVshows and in movies and that
kind of desensitizes us a little, but it's not something that
the average person sees in reallife.

(27:05):
And I remember the first timewatching the Passion and it came
to this scene and it wasshocking.
It was far more brutal thananything I could have ever
imagined and it put into realitythose small little words in the

(27:32):
Bible that says and Pilate hadhim scourged.
It puts it into a whole anotherperspective.
And that's just the start andthe tip of the iceberg.
Before Jesus even had to carryhis cross through the streets of
Jerusalem, through the Via dela Rosa to the gate, and then

(27:54):
had to be nailed to that cross,it just it really changes your,
your perspective.
I'm gonna try to find if thereis a YouTube video that has this
scene if there is one out there, because it is so violent.
I don't know if there is one,but if there is a link, it in
the show notes, because itreally really changes your

(28:20):
perspective on the brutality ofJesus's death and it makes you
realize that you know we sayit's a really like Christian.
I Feel like Christian ease.
Oh, yes, jesus suffered.
He is our savior, but Do youknow the extent of how he

(28:46):
suffered?
Do you even comprehend whatthat means?
And I don't think a lot ofpeople do.
And If it wasn't for all thesuffering, we would have no
redemption.
And that's what this wholeseries has been about.
Is all these prophecies aboutMessiah that Some are great and

(29:11):
brilliant, like how he's gonnabe a king and a high priest
forever.
But None of that would bepossible without all of this
suffering.
And I think it's important thatwe, as adult believers, teach

(29:32):
the Amount to the monumentalsuffering and and be able to
explain this in a way that ourchildren and our, the children
in our community understand, sothat they can have a genuine
faith and a genuine Love for God.

(29:56):
Because when you understand thetotal Suffering that Jesus went
through, how could you not Wantto worship him?
How could you not want toworship him, and Although this
topic is very uncomfortable, itis so necessary that we not shy

(30:20):
away From the pain and sufferingwhen teaching our children and
teaching non-christians aboutwho Jesus is.
And that's where I'm wanting tostop today.
We have so much more to talkabout next week, but this is
where we're going to pause.

(30:42):
God, thank you so much for thisopportunity for me to come and
speak to others and tell themand teach them about how our
Messiah suffered Immensely forus, what I pray that throughout
this Lenten season, that we wereable to reflect on and Remember

(31:08):
all of the things that you wentthrough for us so that we can
be saved, and that we can offerEternal praises of thanksgiving
and be joyful on Easter becausewe remember your suffering, amen
.
