Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hi there and welcome
to Proverbs 31-1, where we
discuss Biblical womanhood andare constantly busy in sometimes
crazy daily life.
I'm Alexis Heaslip and, as awife and mom of two, I'm always
striving and praying to be aProverbs 31 woman of faith.
Happy New Year, guys.
Can you believe it is 2024already?
(00:26):
Thank you so much for this pastyear of going on this journey
with me of being a Proverbs 31woman of faith.
I have a lot in store for thisyear.
For those of you who haven'tseen it yet, I have just
released recently my first bookand it's a Bible study called
(00:47):
Our Suffering Sermon, a six-weekstudy in Isaiah 53 and y'all.
It is just so wonderful.
It's a deep dive into Isaiah 53.
Go check it out on Amazon thelink will be in the show notes.
And I'm also really excitedbecause I am working on my
(01:08):
second book and this won't be aBible study but a book book
about being a Proverbs 31 womanof faith.
I can't wait when I'm able topublish it and let you know
about it.
That's something that I wantyou guys to pray for throughout
this year is this process of mysecond book.
(01:28):
But today we are back into ourConnecting the Dots series of
Messianic prophecy from Old toNew Testament.
We are on week six of thisin-depth discussion that I'm so
excited to be having with youguys, and we are continuing this
(01:49):
journey of a big, importantpassage of Scripture that Jesus
tells people that he fulfilledon a certain day.
I am so excited.
Let's dive on in.
It's going to be great.
(02:10):
The main focus of Scripture isgoing to be in two places Isaiah
and Luke.
The first thing I want to do isI'm going to read these two
verses from Isaiah 61, versesone and two.
Then we are going to break themdown and talk about it and talk
(02:34):
about how Jesus tells us hefulfilled these Scriptures
himself in the book of Luke.
So Isaiah 61, verses one andtwo, tell us this the Ruach
Adonai, elohim, the Spirit ofthe Lord, is on me because
(02:56):
Adonai has anointed me toproclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me up to bind upthe brokenhearted, to proclaim
liberty to the captives and theopening of the prison to those
who are bound.
To proclaim the year ofAdonai's favor and the day of
(03:19):
our God's vengeance, to comfortall who mourn.
Now, some of you who have maybeonly read the New Testament or
have maybe watched the chosenrecently may be going.
I know this from the NewTestament because Jesus himself
said these same words and thatis why I feel like it's so
(03:41):
important that we spend anentire episode just on this
passage.
And Jesus does say these exactwords in Luke, chapter four.
And if you start looking inLuke, chapter four, verse 16.
(04:07):
And he came to Nazareth wherehe'd been raised and it was
custom, he went to the synagogueon Shabbat.
On the Sabbath and he got up toread when the scroll of the
prophet Isaiah was handed to him.
He unrolled the scroll andfound the place where it was
written though Rwak, the spiritof Adonai is on me because he
(04:29):
has anointed me to proclaim goodnews to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaimrelease to the captives and
recovery of sight to the blind,to set free the oppressed and to
proclaim the year of the Lord'sfavor.
He closed the scroll, gave itback to the attendant and sat
down.
All eyes in the synagogue werefocused on him and he began to
(04:52):
tell them today this scripturehas been fulfilled in your ears.
And all were speaking well ofhim and marveling at the
gracious words coming out of hismouth, and they were saying
Isn't this the son of Joseph?
But he said to them Doubtlessyou'll say to me this proverb
(05:16):
Doctor, heal yourself.
And what about what we've heardthat you've done at Capernaum?
Do as much here as in your ownhometown.
But he said, truly I tell you,no prophet is accepted in his
own hometown.
And if you guys remember therest of the story, the people of
Nazareth get so upset at himthat they drove him out of the
(05:38):
town and they were going tothrow him off the cliff, but the
Lord allowed him, the Fatherallowed him, to pass through the
middle and he went on his way.
So in order for us to understandwhy the people he lived with
his whole life, who he grew upwith, got so upset because they
(06:02):
weren't able to see the truth inhis words we need to figure out
what this passage in Isaiah, and what Jesus proclaimed as
fulfilled, is even talking about.
So I really wanted to break itdown and really hit home the
(06:24):
message of how Jesus shows usthat he is indeed the
fulfillment of this prophecyfound in the Old Testament book
of Isaiah.
So the first thing that we needto look at is that we are told
the spirit of Adonai Elohim ison him and he was appointed by
(06:49):
Adonai, appointed by God himself.
So there are many passages, obviously, that we could look at
to show how Jesus himself isappointed by Adonai, but there
are two that I really want tofocus on, and the first is
Matthew, chapter 3, verses 13through 16.
(07:14):
And this is really todemonstrate God not only chosen,
but he publicly, the Father, states this through Jesus'
baptism.
Matthew, chapter 3, starting atverse 13.
(07:35):
When Yeshua came from theGalilee to John to be immersed
by him in the Jordan, but Johntried to prevent him, saying I
need to be immersed by you andyou are coming to me.
But Yeshua, jesus responded Letit happen now, for in this way
it is fitting for us to fulfillall righteousness.
(07:58):
So John yielded to him.
Now listen, these next twoverses are extremely important.
After being immersed, yeshuarose up out of the water and,
behold, the heavens were openedto him and he saw the Ruach
Elohim, the spirit of the Lord, descending like a dove and
(08:22):
coming upon him.
And behold, a voice from theheavens said this this is my son
, whom I love.
With him.
I am well pleased, as we canclearly hear from the scripture,
and just this one portion ofscripture.
Anani the Father has anointedJesus Yeshua and is pleased with
(08:52):
him.
And we see this again reflectedin the book of John in a
different way.
If you'll turn with me to John, chapter one, starting at verse
29.
And I really love the title ofthis section and the tree of
(09:15):
life version, it's called Beholdthe Lamb of God.
So, starting at verse 29.
The next day, john sees Yeshuacoming to him and says Behold
the Lamb of God who takes awaythe sins of the world.
This is the one about who Ihave told you.
He who comes after me is aboveme because he was before me.
(09:40):
I didn't know him, but I cameimmersing with water so that he
might be revealed to Israel.
Then John testified I have seenthe spirit, the Ruach, coming
down like a dove out of heavenand it remained on him.
(10:01):
I did not know him, but the onewho sent me to immerse in the
water said to me the one on whomyou see the Ruach, the spirit,
coming down and remaining, thisis the one who immerses in the
Ruach Hacodesh.
And I have seen and testifiedthat this is Ben Elohim, the Son
(10:26):
of God.
So again, we clearly see thatJesus is anointed by his Father.
So that's how Jesus fulfillsthat first part of the prophecy.
The second part is this theMessiah Messiah in Isaiah is
(10:53):
supposed to proclaim good newsto the poor.
Now, this is a really easy oneto show how Jesus fulfills this,
and there are so many differentinstances in the Bible that
demonstrate that Jesus Yeshuaproclaimed good news to the poor
(11:15):
, but I want us to focus on justtwo instances and something
that Jesus taught during hissermon on the Mount.
So the first instance we needto look at is in Luke, chapter
five, and Notice that not onlydoes Jesus proclaim good news to
(11:43):
the poor, but he also choosesPeople who were poor to spread
his message to others, and sothis is a great example of Jesus
calling fishermen.
It happened that the crowdswere pressing upon Yeshua, jesus
(12:03):
to hear the word of God as hewas standing by the lake of
Kenorat, the sea, when he sawtwo boats standing beside the
lake and if you're wonderingwhat the sea of Kenorat is,
that's the sea of Galilee.
Now the fishermen have leftthem and we're washing the nets.
(12:26):
Getting into one of the boatsSimon's boat Yeshua asked him to
push it out away from the land.
Then, sitting down, he taughtthe crowds from the boat.
Now some side note People wholived in Galilee, we have to
remember.
They were oppressed by theRomans.
They were taken away all thegood jobs.
(12:49):
They were only allowed to doforced labor type jobs or
low-paying labor jobs.
So the people of Israel at thistime were poor because they
were oppressed, and the regionof Galilee was one of the poorer
regions in Israel.
And so when he had finishedspeaking to these poor people in
(13:12):
Galilee, he said to Simon Goout into the deep water and let
down your net for a catch.
Simon replied master, we'veworked hard all night and caught
nothing, but at your word, Iwill let down the nets.
When they had done this, theycaught so many fish that their
nets began to break.
So they signaled to theirpartners and the other boat to
(13:32):
come and help them.
They came and filled both boatsso full that they began to sink
.
But when Simon Peter saw this,he fell down at Yeshua's knees
saying go away from me, master, for I am a sinful man.
For amazement had gripped himand all who were with them Over
the catch of fish they hadnetted.
(13:53):
So also Jacob and John, jamesand John Zebedee's sons, who
were partners with Simon.
But Yeshua said to Simon do notbe afraid, from now on you will
be catching men.
So when they had brought theboats to landing, they left
everything and followed him, these fishermen, these followers
(14:15):
of Jesus, and the crowds whowere there.
They were poor people and heproclaimed the good news to them
and they believed and some ofthem, like Simon and John and
James, started following Jesus.
And we see this again Furtherdown in Luke 5, starting at
(14:42):
verse 27.
Another example, because theywere physically poor people.
But there were also people whoNeeded to hear the good news,
that were spiritually poor, andAn example of this was Matthew,
(15:03):
who was poor in spirit, who wasbroken and poor and needed
spiritual rescuing.
So let's let's hear about howhe rescues the poor in spirit
and proclaims the good news tothe poor.
(15:24):
So Luke, chapter 5, startingverse 27 after these things,
yeshua went out and observed atax collector named Levi or
Matthew, sitting at the taxbooth.
He said to him follow me and, leaving everything, he got up
and followed him and MatthewLevi made a great banquet for
(15:44):
Jesus, yeshua, at his house andthere was a large Crowd of tax
collectors and others who werereclining with him.
Now the Pharisees and the Torahscholars begin murmuring to his
disciples, saying why do youeat and drink with these tax
collectors and sinners, thesepoor people in spirit?
And Jesus answered those whoare healthy have no need for a
(16:11):
doctor, but those who are sickdo.
I Did not come to call on therighteous but the sinful to
repentance, and this beautifullyreflects what Matthew himself
Wrote about the Sermon on theMount, which tells us in Matthew
(16:32):
, chapter 5 Blessed are the poorin spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
So Jesus Was anointed by Adonai, the father, and he proclaimed
the good news to the poor.
And Not only did he do that, bealso healed the broken hearted.
(16:55):
And there were three examplesthat I want us to look at, and
the first one is the famousStory from John of the woman at
the well, and If you want toread the whole story, it's John,
chapter 4, one through really37.
(17:19):
It's a long passage.
It's a long passage but it'sbeautiful.
And she, this woman, who was aSamaritan and if you know your
Bible history, jews andSamaritans did not get along and
(17:40):
she was a woman during a timewhere being a woman wasn't
really a good thing.
And not only was she a woman.
But she did some things whereshe was even out, an outcast
from her own community, becauseshe'd had one husband after
another, after another, afteranother.
(18:01):
But Jesus talked to this woman,he asked this woman questions
and he offered her the gift ofliving water.
Through his love and mercy andby giving her the opportunity to
(18:22):
repent, she was healed, herheart was healed from all of her
past sin.
And she was so excited.
I love how, in verse 15, shesays give me this water so I
(18:43):
don't get thirsty and don't haveto come all the way to drink it
.
And then Jesus says becausethis is before she knew fully
who Jesus was, jesus said gocall your husband and then come
here.
And she said I don't have ahusband.
So Jesus said you're right tosay that you don't have a
husband, because you've had fivehusbands and the man you live
(19:06):
with now is not your husband.
This you've spoken truthfully.
Her mind was blown and she saidsir, I see that you are at
least a prophet.
And she was so convicted andher heart was mended that she
proclaimed I know that theMessiah is coming.
(19:27):
When he comes, he will explaineverything to us.
And Jesus told her I am the onewho is speaking to you.
I am.
And when she heard that she wasfilled with so much joy, she
went back to the town.
She told everyone in the townwhat Jesus told her, what they
talked about and, because of herheart being mended, people who
(19:52):
were Samaritans, who were lookedat as bad people by the Jewish
people, came to believe in theMessiah.
Another example of this is foundin the book of Matthew and
chapter eight, verses onethrough thirteen, about two
(20:15):
different people one who washealed physically and another
person who their friend, washealed physically but his heart
was healed because of this.
And the first is a man who hadleprosy and Jesus healed him
(20:36):
because of his faith.
Because this man said Master,if you are willing, you can make
me clean.
And he was cleansed and hisheart went from broken to
restored.
And then a Centurion, a Romanofficial, the enemy of the
(20:58):
Jewish people.
He was like one of the faces ofthe enemy.
His broken heart is also healedby Jesus.
Let's start at verse five ofMatthew eight.
Now, jesus, yeshua, came intoCapernaum.
A Centurion came begging forhelp.
Master, he said my servant islying at home, paralyzed,
(21:21):
horribly tormented.
Yeshua said to him I'll comeand heal him.
Now, listen to this verse.
It's so beautiful, but theCenturion said Master, I am not
worthy to have you come under myroof, but just say the word and
my servant will be healed, forI also am a man under authority,
(21:44):
with soldiers under me.
I say to this one go when hegoes, and to another come and he
comes.
And to my servant do this, andhe does it.
Now, when Jesus heard this, hemarveled and said to those who
are following Amen, amen.
I tell you, I have not foundanyone in Israel with such great
(22:05):
faith.
Moreover, I tell you that manywill come from the east and from
the west and they will reclineat table with Abraham and Isaac
and Jacob in the kingdom ofheaven, because the sons of the
kingdom will be driven out intothe, out of darkness, and that
place will be great weeping andgnashing of teeth.
(22:27):
Then Yeshua said to theCenturion go as you have
believed, let it be done for you.
And the servant was healed inthat same hour.
You see this Centurion.
We don't know much about him,but what we can?
We can make some guesses.
He's been lost.
(22:48):
He has, probably because he wasa Roman, worshiped many false
gods and his heart had beenbroken over and over and over
again by this idolatry and hehad heard all of these stories
about Jesus living in Capernaum.
He had been maybe even seeingsome of the things that Jesus
(23:08):
has said and done and hearingand seeing what other people
have gone through, and he wentto Jesus in his brokenness and
put his faith in him and he washealed.
What a beautiful thing toreflect on that.
I love how Jesus said peoplefrom east to west will come into
(23:29):
the fold with the patriarchs ofIsrael.
That means anyone can come andbe healed, not just the Jewish
people who were brokenhearted,but anyone.
So he was anointed by Adonai,he proclaimed the good news to
the poor, he healed thebrokenhearted and Jesus brought
(23:52):
liberty to the captives.
Now people may say, physicallydid he bring liberty?
Because a lot of Jewish peopleat this time thought that the
Messiah who would come would bea great military leader.
He would free them of theircaptivity from Rome.
(24:12):
But Jesus came to free peoplefrom the captivity of sin in
their life and from demons intheir life, and there are some
really beautiful examples in thescripture of this.
Again, matthew chapter 8, thereare so many great things in
(24:36):
Matthew, chapter 8.
It's one of my favoritechapters because it just shows
you the work and power of Jesus.
Verses 28 to 34 is this timewhere Jesus had come to the
region of the Gadarenes, wherethere were two demon-played men
(24:59):
coming from a graveyard.
And they met him and they wereso violent that no one could
pass that way and they screamedwhat is between you and us, ben
Elohim, son of God, have youcome here to torment us before
the appointed time?
Now?
A large herd of pigs wasfeeding some distance away and
(25:20):
the demons kept begging him ifyou drive us out, send us into
the herd of pigs.
And he told them go.
So they came out and went tothe pigs and the whole herd
rushed down the cliff into thesea and drowned, and the
herdsmen were so afraid.
He ran away into the town andtold everything, including what
(25:41):
happened to the demon-played men.
And so Jesus, not only did hecome to provide liberty for
people who were lost, heprovided liberty to those who
were captivated in their sin,and it wasn't just for Jewish
people.
He came to free people, whetherJew or Gentile, to be freed
(26:08):
from their sin, to be free fromevil, to be free from demons.
And we see this example of awoman in Matthew, chapter 15,
verses 21 through 28.
Now Jesus left from there andwent to the region of Tyre in
(26:28):
Sidon and behold, a Canaanitewoman.
Remember, the Canaanitesweren't the enemies of Israel
for a long time and a lot ofJews would not even talk to or
associate with someone who was aCanaanite.
And she came out from thisdistrict and started shouting
(26:52):
have mercy on me, oh master, sonof David, my daughter is
severely tormented by a demon.
But he did not answer her aword.
And when his disciples came, they were urging him send her
away because she keeps shoutingat us.
But he responded Iowa sent onlyto heal the lost sheep of the
(27:15):
house of Israel.
So she came out and got down onher knees before him, saying,
master, help me.
And answering he said it's notright to take the children's
bread and throw it to the dogs.
But she said, yes, master, buteven the dogs eat the crumbs
that fall from their master'stable.
Then, answering, yes, she wassaid to her own woman great is
(27:40):
your faith.
Let it be done to you as youwish.
And her daughter was healed inthat hour.
You see, my friends, jesusisn't trying to compare Gentiles
to dogs.
I've heard that, and that's notthe case at all.
Instead, what Jesus was tryingto do was to pull out her faith,
(28:00):
and he did.
He really did.
And another way that you'rereleased from your captivity is
your freedom from greed.
And an example of this is inLuke, chapter 19, 1 through 8,
when Zacchaeus became free fromthe captivity of greed as a tax
(28:22):
collector and he repented beforeJesus.
And now we get to the nextpoint is that Jesus released the
bound when we hear this, notphysically bound, but
spiritually bound people In John, chapter 8, in 34 through 36,
(28:45):
jesus tells the people Amen,amen.
I tell you, everyone who sinsis a slave to sin.
Now, the slave does not remainin the household forever.
The sun abides forever.
So if the sun sets you free, you will be free.
Indeed, we are no longer aslave to sin, as Paul says in
(29:12):
Galatians 4.
We are no longer a slave.
We are a child of God, andJesus is the one that sets us
free.
We cannot be free from anythingelse.
We cannot be free from all thegood things that we say, that we
do, or we cannot be freebecause of who we're friends
(29:35):
with.
That's not how it works.
We are free because the sunsets us free.
And Jesus also did somethingreally interesting, and I had to
do a lot of research into this.
But Jesus came to proclaim ayear of the Lord which is a year
(29:55):
of Jubilee, and you can readall about what a year of Jubilee
is in Leviticus, in chapter 25,verses 8 through 55, and
Leviticus 27, verses 17 through24.
But I'll just give you somebullet points.
A year of Jubilee was like ayear of rest and celebration and
(30:19):
renewal, and during this year, israel the people of Israel they
would cancel all debt, theywould liberate all their slaves.
If someone had to sell theirland because they couldn't
afford it to another family, that land would be returned to
the original family who owned it.
It was a holy time for thepeople in Israel and it was a
(30:44):
time where they were remindedabout why they should be fearing
the Lord.
And so this moment, jesus issaying this is a year of Jubilee
, this is a holy time, and hewas here to liberate the slaves,
(31:04):
cancel the debt of sin andreturn the land to its proper
state of holiness.
Now, the only thing that Jesusdidn't say was that to proclaim
a day of vengeance andretribution.
This hadn't come to pass yet.
(31:26):
He had fulfilled everythingelse in Scripture except for
this, because the day ofvengeance and retribution is a
day that is yet to come, at theend of times, during the second
coming of our Lord Jesus.
And we see this in multipleplaces in Scripture and if you
(31:50):
want to look more into that, look into Revelation 11, 12
through 19, as well as Isaiah 34, 8.
Those are some really goodreference points that you can
look into.
So Jesus fulfilled theScripture.
He had this ministry of healing.
He had the ministry in Galilee, which was prophesied in Isaiah
(32:16):
that this Scripture would befulfilled in a ministry of
healing Isaiah 35, 5 through 6,and a ministry in Galilee itself
.
Specifically, we see this inIsaiah 8, 23 through 9, chapter
9, verse 1,.
But not everyone.
Even though they heard thisgood news, not everyone wanted
(32:40):
to accept that Jesus is theMessiah.
As you saw when we were talking, the people in his very own
hometown of Nazareth rejectedhim and they tried to throw him
off a cliff.
The Pharisees, who were thereligious leaders of the day.
They rejected Jesus as well, even though they knew the
(33:03):
Scriptures the best out ofeveryone.
And in Matthew 23, we see howJesus really harps on them with
their eight woes.
That's it.
The Romans, overall, did notaccept Jesus and they didn't
want to.
My pilot pilot although pilotthought Jesus was not guilty, he
(33:27):
still allowed the crowds to winin the end, and the church was
persecuted by Rome for a longtime, a very long time.
Paul himself was executed forhis faith by the Emperor Nero.
Those who see the truth, ofJesus as Messiah, though,
(33:50):
although many will reject him, those who see the truth will
find Shalom, shalom, the perfectpeace, even though people have
been martyred for their faith, and there have been many martyrs
.
All of the apostles, except forJohn, were martyred for their
(34:11):
faith.
Stephen was martyred for theirfaith, and there have been many
martyrs of the faith beyond that, but they had perfect peace,
perfect Shalom, because the Sonhad set them free, and I hope
you can see how Jesus fulfillsthis scripture and how Jesus,
(34:33):
our Messiah, was anointed byAdonai.
He proclaimed good news to thepoor, he heals the brokenhearted
, he sets the liberty to thecaptives, he releases the bound,
he proclaims a year of the Lordand one day when he returns
even though we don't know theday or the hour he will proclaim
(34:56):
a day of vengeance andretribution.
I don't know about you, butthat just got me so fired up and
excited because I know thatthrough all my messes, through
all my mistakes, I have JesusMessiah and he has set me free
(35:19):
and that just brings me Shalom, shalom, peace.
If you are searching andlooking for this Shalom, looking
for this peace, I ask anemployer that you start looking
to Jesus.
Read the Gospels for yourself, pray about it, ask questions,
(35:44):
ask a local preacher, ask alocal pastor if they could help
you learn more about Jesus.
Message me on social media.
I'd be more than happy to talkto you, either through Instagram
or even email me my emails.
Alexis, at Proverbs 31wannabecom, I would be more than
(36:07):
happy to talk to you so thatyou can know who our Messiah is
and find that Shalom, shalom.
That's the whole reason why Ido this podcast is so that more
people can come to know Jesus, yeshua, as their Messiah, as
their Lord, and so that theycould be set free from the
(36:30):
bondage of sin.
