Speaker 1 (00:06):
Hi there and welcome
to Proverbs 31, 1 and B, where
we speak biblical truths to aworld that is needing light for
women of all walks of life.
My name is Alexis Heaslip andI'm your host of the show, and
today we are continuing ourdiscussion on connecting the
dots Messianic prophecies fromOld to New Testament.
(00:29):
But before we kick off our show, I just want to have a quick
discussion about the he Sees UsSuper Bowl commercial, and
there's been a lot ofcontroversy over the years with
this organization, and thisSuper Bowl's ad was no other,
but I appreciate that, onnational television, during a
(00:57):
football game that's watched bymillions of people, that the
name of Jesus was mentioned.
This is, in this perspective,in this side of the coin, good,
because a lot of people weren'tfamiliar with Jesus washing the
(01:20):
disciples feet, and this givespeople the opportunity to open
up the Bible and find thisamazing part of scripture for
themselves.
On the other side of the coin, though, this organization has
some serious biblical issues.
They promote people coming toJesus as they are, but then not
(01:50):
asking for change, and that'scounter to what the gospel is.
We need to come to Jesus, notbecause he's so cool and awesome
and loves others and loves youno matter what.
So that's part of it.
(02:10):
The reason you're supposed tocome to Jesus is because you
realize that you're a sinner andthat you realize you need a
savior, and when you go to thewebsite for he Sees Us.
That's not the message that thewebsite seems to portray.
(02:32):
It makes the suggestion thatyou can come to Jesus wherever
you are in life and he's goingto love you no matter what you
do, and that is not the gospelmessage, which is quite
unfortunate, because this couldhave been a great opportunity
(02:52):
for those who don't know Jesusto know Jesus the way the Bible
says that Jesus is.
So, although there was someaspect of good in this
commercial, there is a lot ofroom for growth.
There was an opportunity almostsquandered because the website,
(03:17):
if you go to it, gives a falsenarrative of who Jesus is.
I just wanted to share mythoughts with that and I feel
like that's really sad becauseyet again it's a
misrepresentation of what itmeans to follow Jesus, given out
to the American public, to theworld, to the average person.
(03:39):
And you know, although theUnited States, statistically, a
lot of people claim to beChristians, out of all the
people who claim to beChristians.
Only about 10% attend a churchand out of that, only like 3%
read their Bible consistently.
(04:01):
So this ad, although it couldstir some hearts to seek Jesus,
could also do a lot of damage bygiving people a version of
Jesus that's not accurate.
And I think it's important asparents, that we need to be
aware of this so that we cantalk to our children because
(04:24):
they're going to come home fromschool and say my friends saw
this ad on the Super Bowl andthey think it's so amazing that
Jesus is going to accept you ifyou're trans or if you're gay,
and just love you where you arein life.
And we need to be able to equipour children in the truth, in
(04:46):
the message of the Gospel, abouthow, yes, jesus loves us.
Jesus loved the tax collector, jesus loved the adulterous, but
he expected change in theirlives.
And that's the whole reason whyI do this podcast is so that
women can come together, learnfrom one another and grow in
(05:11):
their faith with Jesus, so thatwe can change our hearts and so
that we can live a biblical way,so that other people, whether
it's our husbands, our children, our coworkers, our neighbors,
our friends, can see how we areliving out the Gospel and then
they can take that and seekchange for their own lives.
(05:32):
So I just I hope you enjoyedthis little.
I just wanted to.
I really wanted to share thiswith you guys.
Now let's get into the meat, andthis is why we need to know
scripture, so that we can sharethe Gospel when it's presented
for us to share, or when we seesomething that's inaccurate,
(05:55):
we're able to speak up on it.
So let's dive in now so that wecan continue to learn in order
to go out and tell others aboutour Messianic prophecies that
were from the Old Testament andhow Jesus fulfills them in the
new.
Let's dive on in y'all.
(06:15):
If you guys remember from lastweek, we talked about how some
of these Messianic propheciesstart going from our Messiah is
going to be a mighty counselor, prince of Peace, to the
specifics of the physicalaspects of what he's going to go
(06:36):
through.
And last week we talked abouthow Jesus' own family refused to
recognize him at first.
Now we're going to see how hisown friends and others betrayed
(06:56):
our Messiah leading up to hisdeath on the cross.
So there are four points thatI'm going to go through today,
and the first is this one.
Our Messiah was betrayed by afriend, and we see this in the
(07:17):
Old Testament, excuse me, in thebook of Psalms, if you'll turn
with me to Psalm 41.
And I'm going to read verses 7through 9.
And if someone of them comes tosee me, he speaks falsely.
He stores up evil in his heart.
(07:38):
Then he goes out and chatters.
All who hate me whispertogether about me.
They imagine the worst about me.
Something evil was poured intohim.
He will not get up again fromthe place where he lies.
(07:58):
And then verse 10 is the realhumdinger.
Even my own close friend, whomI trusted, who ate my bread, has
lifted up his heel against me.
And Jesus actually quotes thescripture directly during the
(08:20):
Last Supper, about Judas, hisdisciple, one of his apostles,
who betrays him.
We see this again echoed inPsalm 55, verses 12 through 15,
(08:40):
which tell us this Ruins are inher midst.
Oppression and deceit neverleave her square.
For if it were an enemytaunting me, I could endure it.
If my foe was exalting himselfover me, I could hide from him.
But it is you, a man like me,my companion and my close friend
(09:06):
.
Together we enjoyed greatfellowship.
We used to walk with the throngin the house of God.
Isn't that so sad.
And then 16, let desolationcome upon them, let them go down
alive into Sheol, for evil isin their dwelling, among them.
(09:28):
And some context Jesus wasbetrayed by a friend, but not
just by any friend, but by oneof his disciples, one of his
apostles, one of the twelve, judas Ascariot.
And not only was he just one ofthe twelve apostles, he was
(09:55):
trusted so much by the otherapostles that he had the
responsibility of being incharge of Jesus's money, of the
ministry.
So he was so trusted by hisfriends, by the other apostles
(10:18):
and by Jesus that he was put incharge of the finances of the
ministry.
So that just shows you thelevel of trust that everyone had
for Judas.
So the betrayal cut deep, andwe see this throughout the New
Testament.
All the books of the by, allthe gospels have accounts of
(10:46):
Judas's betrayal.
But I'm going to focus in onthe book of Matthew Overall.
I'm going to focus on the bookof Matthew Overall.
We are going to look at Johnfor just a little bit, but I
feel like the book of Matthewjust makes it abundantly clear
about how deep this cut.
(11:09):
If you'll turn with me toMatthew, chapter 26,.
And we're going to be startingat verse 20.
I know, matthew, matthew 26 isa long chapter and we're not
going to read every single partof it.
So let's go there Starting atverse 20.
(11:30):
And this is during the LastSupper, this is before Good
Friday.
Jesus, they're reclining at thetable.
Let's start at verse 20.
Now, when it was evening, yeshuaJesus was reclining at the
(11:50):
table with the 12.
As they were eating, he saidAmen, I tell you, one of you
will betray me.
And, being very sorrowful, theybegan, each one to say to him
I'm not the one, am I master?
And he replied the one whodipped his hand in the bowl with
(12:14):
me, he is the one who willbetray me.
The Son of man, indeed, goesjust as it is written about
himself.
But woe to that man who, theSon of man, is betrayed.
It would have been better forthat man if he had not been born
.
And Judas, or Judah, the onewho betrayed him, replied I am
(12:40):
not the one, am I, rabbi?
Yeshua said to him, you said ityourself.
Jesus was giving Judas, orJudah, the Hebrew name of Judas,
the opportunity to stop, theopportunity to repent, the
(13:03):
opportunity to come clean.
But he didn't.
But let's skip ahead now toverse 47, where things start
getting spicy, and this is whenthe actual betrayal happens.
While Jesus Yeshua was stillspeaking, here came Judah, judas
(13:28):
, one of the 12, and with him abig crowd with swords and clubs
from the ruling Priests, theKohanim and elders of the people
.
Now his betrayer had given thema sign saying the one I kiss
he's the one sees him.
And immediately Judah drew nearand Yeshua said.
(13:49):
And to Yeshua he said Shalom, rabbi, and kissed him, friend.
Yeshua said to him do whatyou've come to do.
And the crowd came and threw uptheir hands on him and seized
him.
Now what's really sad is thatthis is like the ultimate
(14:21):
Betrayal of a friend.
And before I give my thoughts onthis, I want us quickly to look
at John chapter 13, which giveseven more context to how deep
this betrayal is.
John chapter 13, 18 to 21.
The servants and officers werestanding around a fire they had
(14:44):
made because it was cold andthey were warming themselves.
Oh, I'm not the wrong.
I'm not the wrong, I'm sorry, Iwas at Whoo see, I was reading
the wrong chapter.
So we're gonna read Johnchapter 13, 18 through 21.
I was.
I had that mixed up.
(15:05):
So let's start at verse 18, andthis is again talking about how
Jesus is gonna reveal hisbetrayer.
I'm not speaking to all of you.
I know who I have chosen, butso the scriptures may be
fulfilled he who eats my breadhas lifted up his heel against
me.
From now on, I'm telling youbefore it happens, so that when
(15:27):
it happens you may believe thatI am Amen, amen.
I tell you, he who receives theone I send receives me, and he
who receives me receives the onewho sent me.
After he said these things, yeshua was agitated in the
spirit and testified amen, amen.
(15:48):
I tell you, one of you Willbetray me.
The disciples began lookingabout perplexed.
One of his disciples, who Jesusloved, was reclining at his
side, and Simon Peter nodded tohim and Says ask him, who is he
(16:10):
talking about?
Then he who leaned on Yeshua'schest said master, who is it?
It's the one I will give thisbit of matzah to after I dip it.
And he dipped the matzah and hegives it to Judah, from Criot,
the son of Simon, and with thatbit, satan entered into him.
Then Jesus tells him whatyou're about to do, do it
(16:32):
quickly.
What's really heartbreakingabout all of this is this idea
of lifting up the heel, becauseculturally, this is extremely
significant.
So when you hear that, we, asthe modern reader, might miss
(16:53):
this.
But when you lift lifting one'sheel, it was considered in the
time of Jesus a gesture ofinsult and the idea that you're
preparing to kick someone orsomething.
So Judas was ready to give thisblow of Betrayal, but it has
(17:16):
not happened yet and he wasready to strike and it really is
heartbreaking.
I don't know about you, but weare all fallen and and and
Messed up people and I'm surethat you've had the betrayal of
a friend.
I know I have.
When I found out I was pregnantat 20 years old and I decided
(17:43):
to Keep my baby because Ibelieve that life begins at
conception.
You find out really quickly whoyour true friends are and it
hurts the betrayal of people whoyou thought we were friends.
But they Rejected you and madefun of you.
And they made fun of me becauseI chose to keep my baby instead
(18:08):
of offering up to the altar ofabortion and child sacrifice.
And I was told that by peoplewho I thought were my friends
that my life is gonna be overand they stopped being my friend
, it was heartbreaking.
So imagine Taking that feelingof heartbreak that I'm sure
(18:31):
you've had as well.
And Jesus felt this heartbreakbecause, yes, he was fully God,
but he was also fully man and hefelt every single type of
emotion that we felt as well.
And it's also heartbreaking forJudas Because he had an
(18:57):
opportunity To repent.
He could have repented.
And it wasn't just Judas thatbetrayed Jesus, peter also
betrayed Jesus by denying himthree times.
But the difference betweenJudas and Peter is that Peter
asked for forgiveness and ifJudas would have done the same,
(19:19):
jesus would have forgiven him,but he didn't.
And because Judas did not askfor forgiveness, he was
emotionally destroyed.
And we read what happened tohim, because he couldn't recover
(19:41):
from this betrayal and he feltlike he couldn't ask for
forgiveness.
We read how it ate him up andhe ultimately killed himself and
hung himself.
And in the book of Acts we hearmore of what happened to Judas,
because Satan entered him and hebetrayed our Messiah.
(20:01):
We are told this in Acts, chapter 1, verses 16 through 18.
Through 18, we are toldbrothers, the scripture had to
be fulfilled, which the Ruach HaKodesh, the Holy Spirit,
foretold by the mouth of Davidconcerning Judah, who had become
a guide to those who seizedYeshua, for he was counted among
(20:23):
us and now Received his shareof his office.
Now this man, judah.
Judas, bought a field with thereward of his wickedness.
Falling headfirst, he burstopen in the middle and his
intestines spattered out, and itbecame all to know.
(20:45):
It became known to all of thoseliving in Jerusalem.
So in their own language thefield was called a keldama, that
is, field of blood.
So Judas betrayed Jesus.
Jesus was betrayed by a friend.
The question then is how was hebetrayed?
(21:07):
And he was betrayed for 30pieces of silver, and we see
this in the book of Zachariah inthe Old Testament.
This is clearly spelled out asto what is to come.
(21:30):
So if you'll turn with me toZachariah, chapter 11.
, let's start at verse 10.
So I took my staff, called favorand broke it to pieces in order
to break my covenant that Imade with all the people.
It was broken on that day.
The afflicted of the flockedwere watching me and they knew
(21:53):
it was the word of Adonai.
Then I said to them If it seemsgood to you, pay me my wages,
but if not, don't bother.
So they weighed out my wages 30pieces of silver.
Then Adonai said to me, throwit to the potter, that
exorbitant price at which theyvalued me.
(22:14):
So I took the 30 pieces ofsilver and threw them into the
house of Adonai to the potter.
And what's really interesting,to give context about 30 pieces
of silver in Exodus, chapter 21,verse 32.
(22:37):
You can see that this setamount, this price of 30 pieces
of silver, is the price thatsomebody would pay for a slave,
and Jesus, being our ultimatesuffering servant, was handed
(22:57):
over to atone for our sins, asour servant, as our slave, for
30 pieces of silver.
And we read how this horrifyingtransaction went down in
Matthew, chapter 26.
(23:17):
So flip back with me, if youwill, to Matthew 26, where we
read in verses 14 and 15.
Then one of the 12, the onecalled Judah of Criot, went to
the ruling cohanim, which is theruling priest, and said what
(23:42):
are you willing to give me if Ihand him over to you?
And they weighed out 30 shekelsof silver for him.
From then on, judah beganlooking for a chance to hand him
over.
So we see this how he was takenover by Satan, went to the
(24:10):
priest and sold off Jesus like aslave for 30 pieces of silver
to be handed over, to be put todeath.
And this is where the guilttrip starts happening in his
mind.
Yes, he was handed over, butafterwards his price was thrown
(24:34):
into the temple treasury, as wejust read in Zachariah 1113.
This prediction that it wouldbe thrown back into the temple
of Adonai and because of thisguilt.
In Matthew 27, we read whatJudas did in his remorse, one
(24:54):
through 10.
One daybreak came, the rulingKohanim and elders of the people
conspired against Jesus to puthim to death and they tied him
up, led him away and handed himover to pilot the governor.
Then Judah, his betrayer, sawthat Yeshua had been condemned.
(25:15):
Feeling remorse, he brought the30 pieces of silver back to the
ruling Kohanim and elders, saying I have sinned, betraying
innocent blood.
But they said what's that to us?
See to it yourself.
After tossing the silver offinto the temple sanctuary, he
(25:39):
left.
Then he went off and hangedhimself.
But the ruling Kohanim took thesilver pieces and said it's not
permitted to put these in thetreasury, since his blood money.
So after they conferred, theybrought with them the potter's
field as a cemetery forstrangers.
For this reason the field hasbeen called the field of blood
(26:03):
to this day, then, was fulfilledwhat was spoken by Jeremiah,
the prophet, saying and theytook 30 pieces the price of him,
whom a price had been set byIsrael, and they gave them for
the potter's field, just asAdonai had arranged it.
(26:29):
And this shows us the trulyheartbreaking aspect of this
whole thing.
Yes, judas committed an awfulsin and he betrayed the Son of
man.
But all he had to do was askJesus for forgiveness, and Jesus
(26:55):
would have forgiven him.
But instead he took his guilt,he took his shame and he let
Satan come into his head andtell him that he wasn't worthy
of forgiveness and he hunghimself and killed himself.
And that's the trulyheartbreaking scenario.
And not only did Judas betrayJesus in this horrific way, but
(27:24):
his disciples did not stand upfor him.
They ran away, they forsook him, they left him high and dry
because they had fear.
This is predicted in Zechariah, chapter 13.
The other eleven ran.
(27:48):
Let's read Zechariah 13, verse 7, together Awake O sword against
my shepherd, against the manwho was my companion.
It's a declaration of Adonai savolt, strike the shepherd and
(28:08):
the sheep will be scattered.
I will turn my head against thelittle ones.
The flock of sheep of the goodshepherd were going to run away
scared.
And that is exactly whathappened in Matthew 26, verse 31
(28:33):
.
We read this After seeing theywent out and then Yeshua said to
them this night you will fallaway because of me, for it is
written, I will strike theshepherd and the sheep of the
flock will be scattered.
And Peter had the audacity tosay in verse 33, though I'll
(28:56):
fall away because of you, I'llnever fall away.
And that's when Jesus saidyou're going to deny me three
times.
And Peter and the otherdisciples didn't believe him,
did not believe him.
They thought that their faithwould be so strong that they
would stick with Jesus throughanything.
But then we get to verse 55 ofMatthew 26.
(29:17):
And we read this At the hourYeshua said to the crowds have
you come out with swords andclubs to capture me, as you
would?
A revolutionary?
Every day I sat teaching in thetemple and you didn't seize me.
But all this happened so thatthe writings of the prophets
would be fulfilled.
Then all the disciples fled, abandoning him.
(29:43):
So it's easy to sit back, because we know the full story,
and it's easy for us to judgethe disciples actions, and it's
easy for us to have the audacityto say that we would never do
the same thing.
(30:03):
But my friends, these men wereJesus's closest friends and
disciples.
They walked with Jesus, theytalked with Jesus, they ate with
Jesus, they kept camp withJesus, they lived life with
(30:27):
Jesus for over three years andthey still ran away scared when
things got sticky.
So we have no idea how we wouldreact.
We probably run away too, butthat just shows us that we are
(30:47):
fallen people and we makemistakes.
But Jesus loved them and heforgave them and he used all of
these disciples to spread thegospel throughout the world.
So yes, sometimes we makemistakes and we run away from
(31:07):
God, but God can still use usfor his glory.
And if the disciples can makethis mistake and still be loved
and accepted and forgiven by God, then we too can be loved,
accepted and forgiven by Godwhen we make big oopsies in our
(31:29):
life.
And as a mom, this really hit mebecause I feel like sometimes,
as a mom, I get frustrated, Iget flustered when I'm telling
my child over and over and overagain about the same behavior
(31:52):
problem.
For example, my son's inkindergarten and he is a
high-energy boy and he's stilllearning that there's a time to
play and there's a time to learn.
And, yes, sometimes I getreally frustrated because he's
(32:12):
just not getting that.
When it's center time, withmath manipulatives or reading
time, it's not time to horsearound and play.
But instead of getting mad, getting frustrated or yelling at
him in the heat of my emotions,I can look at the scripture and
(32:33):
pray about it constantly andask God for a spirit of kindness
, gentleness, patience andself-control, like Jesus had for
his disciples.
Even though they all ran awayand dispersed, he still showed
mercy and compassion after herose from the dead and offered
(32:56):
forgiveness, even though, basedon their attitudes, they didn't
necessarily deserve it.
I know I make mistakes and Ithank God every day that I have
a Savior who loves me despitemyself.
And as a mom, I need to besetting the example for my kids
(33:17):
that I love them no matter whatand I will always forgive them
no matter what, and that weshould be living the example
that Jesus gave out.
And I know it's not easy, it isso hard, but when we do that,
we can bring a light to thisworld that so desperately needs
(33:38):
it.
