Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hi there and welcome to Proverbs 31-1 to be.
My name is Alexis Heaslip andtoday we are continuing to
discuss connecting the dotsmessianic prophecy from old to
New Testament.
We are winding down the series.
We are in episode 12, and todayis one of the harder days, one

(00:32):
of the heavier days, because weare going to be talking about
our messiah's execution.
Last episode was rough.
We talked about what it meantfor Jesus to be scourged and the
mocking that he went throughand the beating that he went
through, and this week again, wesee this continuation of our

(00:58):
Savior's suffering.
I have quite a few points to gothrough.
This is really scripture heavytoday and I'm really excited for
that.
So let's dive on in y'all, it'sgoing to be good, alright, guys
.
So the first big point that weneed to talk about is just how

(01:21):
our Savior, our messiah, wasexecuted, and he was executed by
means of crucifixion, and Iknow images of a cross or images
of Jesus on the cross wearing acrucifix is really common in
our society today.

(01:41):
However, during the time ofJesus, when one person thought
of a cross, their first thoughtwas death, and the death of the
worst kind, reserved for theworst type of people, because to
be crucified is like thebiggest insult.
If you're going to die, if youare a Roman citizen and you

(02:04):
committed a crime, or if youwere accused by Caesar of doing
something bad, it would just bemore honorable to commit suicide
or to be beheaded.
But if you weren't a Romancitizen and you were poor and

(02:26):
destitute and you were a thiefor you did something like murder
, your sentence would becrucifixion, which is absolutely
horrifying.
And the Old Testament does havesome prophecies about the death

(02:47):
of Messiah via crucifixion.
So the first place we want tolook at is in the book of Psalms
.
In Psalm 22, we're going toread verses 16 and 17.
Verse 16 says this my strengthis dried up like a clay pot.
My tongue clings to my jaws.

(03:08):
You lay me in the dust of death, for dogs have surrounded me.
A band of evildoers has closedin on me.
They pierced my hands and myfeet.
So we know that our Messiah hashands and his feet are going to

(03:32):
be pierced, and we see thistheme throughout the Old
Testament, as not just in thePsalms, but in the prophets as
well.
If you'll turn with me to thebook of Isaiah Isaiah, chapter

(03:54):
53, one of the most iconicpassages for Messianic prophecy
about our suffering servant.
We will look at verse 7 andagain, I know I've talked about
this before, but I do have areally amazing in depth study on

(04:19):
Isaiah 53 about just the extentthat our servants suffered.
If you want a copy of this foryourself, check the show notes.
I have a link for you there.
It is so wonderful.
You can do the study as a group, you can do the study as an
individual, but you come awaywith having this in depth

(04:43):
knowledge of how our Messiahtruly suffered for our sins.
So I hope you guys take thechance to check it out.
But let's take a look at Isaiah53, verse 7, really quickly.
He was oppressed and afflictedand yet he didn't open his mouth
.
Like a lamb led to theslaughter, like sheep before it,

(05:07):
sheers is silent.
So he did not open his mouth.
So, our Savior, he could havecried out, he could have stopped
all of this pain and sufferingvia the most humiliating death,

(05:31):
by crucifixion.
But he didn't.
He sat there and allowed it tohappen and he was led away for
the slaughter Again.
The book of Zachariah and youknow, after doing these studies
with you guys, in the past twoweeks Zachariah has been coming

(05:53):
up so much and, to be honest, Ihad not been as familiar with
the book of Zachariah.
But because of us doing all ofthese studies together, it makes
me want to read this full bookand I don't know.

(06:17):
Let me know what you guys liketo do a study on the book of
Zachariah together?
I think it would be kind of fun.
Let me know, leave me a comment, let me know, because I want to
do things that you want to hear.
But yes, so let's turn to thebook of Zachariah.
We can always come back to thatlater.

(06:38):
But Zachariah, chapter 12, verse10, tells us this Then I will
pour out on the house of Davidand the inhabitants of Jerusalem
a spirit of grace andsupplication when they will look
toward me.
Whom they pierced?

(07:00):
Whom they pierced?
So, as you can see, we are toldthat his hands and feet will be
pierced, but he will not openup his mouth to defend himself

(07:24):
and Jerusalem will look towardshim during this time and this
gets played out throughout theGospels we're going to look at
the book of Matthew to start andthen we'll go from there.

(07:46):
So, if you turn with me toMatthew, chapter 27, and we're
looking at verse 35, which tellsus this and when they had
crucified him, they divided hisclothing among themselves by

(08:08):
casting lots.
So this verse confirms thatJesus was indeed crucified to a
cross.
And we might get a little bitmore information in Luke, if
you'll turn with me to Luke, because that was a very short

(08:28):
verse.
But that's what the beauty ofthe different accounts of the
Gospels is that each writergives us their own unique
perspective and we learnsomething different because the

(08:50):
Gospels on their own, eachindividual gospel, is like a
little snippet of Jesus'sministry.
But when we see and read andcompare all four of them, we can
get more of the bigger pictureand I think that's just so much

(09:11):
fun when you realize that allscripture is connected,
especially the gospel accounts.
You can learn so much moreabout Jesus when you go in it
with that open mind and when yougo in with that investigative

(09:31):
spirit.
So if you'll turn with me toLuke, 24, verse 39, we read a
similar passage.
Look at my hands and my feet.
It is I myself.
Touch me and see, for a spiritdoesn't have flesh and bones, as

(09:51):
you see I have.
So this is when Jesus appearedto the disciples, after he died
and after he rose and he'sshowing look, my hands and my
side were pierced and my feet, and he was proving that he is
alive in the flesh and that hewas able to show them the marks

(10:13):
from his crucifixion.
So that's another piece of thispuzzle that we see, and, and
now in the book of John we geteven more details, even more
descriptions, and again it'slike putting all the pieces of a

(10:34):
puzzle together and it's a lotof fun to do so.
So first let's look at John, chapter 19, and you know what,
when you, when we're able torealize it's like a puzzle we
can then talk to our kids abouthow learning things that are in
the Bible and connecting thedots it's like going on a

(10:58):
scavenger hunt With our youngerkids.
We can you know the story,we're going on a bear hunt and
and you can use that similarconcept of that children's story
and apply it to how we can beactive in reading the and
reading the Bible and use thatas an opportunity to teach them

(11:22):
that reading the Bible is fun,it's exciting and there's always
something new to learn, see ordo, and I feel like what an
amazing opportunity that we haveto share this joy with our
children.
So just like children have fungoing on scavenger hunts or

(11:45):
solving a mystery, we too, themore we dive into our Bibles,
can discover more and learn moreabout solving this puzzle of
our creator, our God.
So turn with me to the book ofJohn, chapter 19, verse 8.
Let's start there.

(12:06):
Oh, 18, excuse me, verse 18.
I read that wrong in my notes.
There they crucified him, andwith two others, one on each
side and Yeshua in between.
All right, we got more details.
Jesus was crucified and therewere two people crucified along

(12:26):
with him.
Now let's skip down to verse 34, which tells us this but one of
the soldiers, after Jesus haddied, pierced His side with a
spear and immediately blood andwater came out.
He who has seen it hastestified and his testimony is

(12:50):
true.
He knows that he is telling thetruth so that you may also
believe.
These things happened for aSpecific reason, which we're
going to get to in a little bit.
I'm not gonna spoil it just yet.

(13:11):
So we get more pieces to thepuzzle.
And there's another piece tothis puzzle of Jesus being
crucified, if you'll turn withme to to John, chapter 20,
because, remember, I Know we'regonna talk about it again.

(13:31):
And another episode he wascrucified.
Yes, he died, yes, but that'snot the end of the story.
So read with me and John, chapter 20 versus 20 through 28.
And this is Jesus appearing tothe disciples again.
We're gonna get a differentperspective.
After he said, shalom, peace,be with you, he showed them his

(13:57):
hands in his side.
Then the disciples rejoicedwhen they saw the Lord.
Yeshua said to them againShalom Eli him, as the father
has sent me, so I also send you.
And after he said this, hebreathed on them and said
receive the Ruach ha Kodesh, thespirit.

(14:18):
If you forgive anyone sins, they are forgiven, but if you
hold back, they are held back.
One of the 12, thomas, calledthe twin, was not with them when
Yeshua came.
The other disciples were sayingto him we have seen the Lord.
But he replied to them unless Isee the nail prints in his

(14:40):
hands and put my fingers intothe marks of the nails and I put
my hand in his side, I'll neverbelieve.
Eight days later, the discipleswere again inside and Thomas was
with them.
Yeshua came Despite the lockeddoors.
He stood in their midst andsaid Shalom Eli him.

(15:02):
Then he said to Thomas put yourfinger here and look at my
hands, reach out your hand andput it into my side, stop
doubting and believe.
Thomas answered and said myLord and my God, yeshua, said
because you have seen me, you'vebelieved.
Blessed are those who have notseen and yet believe.

(15:26):
I love talking about thisbecause none of us have actually
Seen the risen Lord in theflesh like the disciples, but
because we have the fullnarrative and because we can put
these pieces of the puzzlestogether, we can proclaim that

(15:49):
Jesus is a Lord.
And it reminds me of this song.
I'll link it in the show notesand it's such a beautiful song.
I think it's called drops inthe ocean.
I'm gonna double check on thename, but, uh, some of the
lyrics go.
If you want to see how much youmean to me, look at my hands,

(16:13):
look at my sides.
And it talks about If you cancount the times, you say that
you are forgiven.
It's more than the drops in theocean and I think that's so
beautiful that when we read howJesus's Body was pierced during
crucifixion, during hisexecution, we can be reminded

(16:35):
that, even though he wentthrough think these things, he
loved us so much that he waswilling to go through this and
that, no matter how many timeswe mess up, our sins are
forgiven.
And before we move on to thenext point, will you turn with
me to the book of Revelation andyou'll see this is.
This is still important, because More things are gonna

(16:58):
happen in the time to come, which I believe is coming sooner
rather than later.
Revelation one, verse sevenlook, he's coming with the
clouds and every eye will seehim.
Even those who pierced him andall the tribes of the earth

(17:18):
Should mourn because of him.
Yes, a man.
And in verse eight, I am thealpha and Omega, who is and was
and who is to come the almighty.
So it is important for us thatJesus's body was pierced, but
because he is pierced, we havethe opportunity To worship him

(17:44):
as a Lord.
So what are you waiting for?
What are you waiting for?
Second point our Lord wasthirsty.
Thirsty during his execution, which I think is a really Really
important point, because itreminds us that, yes, jesus was

(18:10):
fully God, I, but he was alsofully man, and we see this in
Psalm 22, this being somethingthat is prophesied.
And again, verse 15 and 16,.

(18:31):
I'm poured out my water, all mybones are disjointed, my heart
is like wax melting away with myinnards.
My strength is dried up like aclay pot.
My tongue clings to my jaws.
You lay me in the dust of theearth.
My tongue clings to my jaws.
That means his mouth is just sodry.

(18:53):
It's like the desert.
It's like when you've beenoutside all day playing and you
realize you haven't had waterall day and your mouth is
parched and oh, it's awful.
You know, if you know thatfeeling, that's the feeling, the
human feeling, that our Messiahexperienced, and we read this
in John, chapter 19, verse 28,.

(19:18):
If you'll turn with me there,we read this After this when
Yeshua knew that all thingswould be completed to fulfill
scripture, he said I am thirsty,I am thirsty.
What a human feeling Jesus feltin that moment the feeling of

(19:44):
thirst.
Now, the question is he wasthirsty, yes, but let's add more
, let's add another piece tothis puzzle he was thirsty, so
did anyone provide him with anyrelief?
Now, this is what I think isextremely interesting.
He was not given water because, ultimately, he was being

(20:06):
executed right?
So the end goal was death, notlife, and, as we know, water is
a symbol of life and living.
So, instead of being givenwater, our Messiah was to be
given this type of vinegarmixture to quench his thirst.

(20:29):
And I learned a lot of newthings when doing my research
into this.
A lot, a lot of new things.
If you'll turn with me to Psalm69, you'll see what I mean
Psalm 69, verse 22 or 21,depending on your translation.

(20:53):
So in mine it's verse 22, butI'm using the tree of life
version.
They put gall in my food and forthirst they gave me vinegar to
drink.
I had to look up what the wordgall meant, because I wasn't
quite sure.
The word in English sounds veryharsh and like.

(21:19):
When I read it it reminded me.
It like made my mouth pucker, like when you're eating
something that's super sour, like a warhead and something
that's repugnant.
And when I looked up thedefinition, it meant bitterness
or poison is what the word meant.
And then one of my study notessaid that this gall that they're

(21:40):
talking about could have beenthis wine that was mixed with
bitter myrrh and vinegar.
And when you think of myrrh inthe Bible and in the story of
Jesus, the first thing that cameto my mind was when he was a
baby and the three wise men cameand what was one of the gifts

(22:00):
that was given to Jesus, myrrh.
And why is this important?
Myrrh is also a spice used forburial used for burial.
So this use of this gall, whichhad myrrh and vinegar, just

(22:23):
really emphasizes the fact thatour Lord is about to die, and I
thought you know that was just areally interesting detail that
God has given us in Hisscriptures, and when you make
connections like this, it justmakes you go aha and to see this
in the New Testament.

(22:44):
Turn with me to Matthew 27.
And we're going to be lookingat verse 34.
Remember when I said I'm notfinishing that verse.
Let's finish that versetogether now, matthew 27.

(23:04):
Oops, one more Verse 34.
They offered him wine withmixed gall to drink, but after
tasting he was unwilling todrink it.
I wouldn't want to drink iteither.

(23:26):
It sounds like it tastes bitterand yucky and awful.
Now this fourth point I thoughtwas really interesting, because
we know that Jesus was scourgedand we talked about that, but it
didn't occur to me that duringthe scourging not one bone was

(23:50):
broken, and it's actuallyprophesied that our Messiah was
to be executed without havingany bone broken in his entire
body.
And there's actually quite afew Old Testament scriptures
that talk about this and I wouldhave never thought that such

(24:14):
what seems to be a small detailcould be so so important and
some of the scripture we'regonna look at it's a lot to take
in.
So let's start first withsomething that's easier to read
and talk about.
Psalm 34, verse 20, tells usthis many are the distresses and

(24:43):
righteous, but Adonai delivershim out of them all.
He keeps all his bones.
Not one of them is broken.
That was in the Psalms, thisprophecy about how our Messiah
would keep all of his bones.
But where is this significant?

(25:04):
Why is this significant?
I had no clue at first why thiswas so significant, but we have
to go all the way back to thebook of Exodus to get so much
mind-blowing clarityMind-blowing clarity.

(25:27):
I'm not gonna read all of itbecause this is a big passage of
scripture, but Exodus, chapter12 gives us all the details that
God gave to Moses about whatthe Passover lamb, what
qualities it needs to have inorder for it to be an acceptable

(25:52):
offering.
I highly suggest you go throughExodus 12 and read about all of
these different needs that theIsraelites had to have in order
for this lamb to be anacceptable offering for the Lord

(26:16):
, so that God would pass overtheir households.
But specifically, let's look atverse 46, and verse 46 tells us
this, and when you hear thisit's gonna blow your mind it is
to be eaten inside a singlehouse the lamb.

(26:37):
You're not to carry the meatout of the house, you are not to
break its bones.
The lamb offering needed to beperfect, with no broken bones.
And how could Jesus be ourultimate lamb, ultimate sin,

(27:01):
ultimate guilt offering if hisbones were broken?
He couldn't.
He couldn't.
And we see this again reflectedin the book of numbers, chapter
9, verse 12, which tells usthis oops, where is it there?

(27:30):
They are not to leave any of ituntil morning or break any
bones when they celebratePassover there, to observe all
of its regulations.
Again, it is emphasized thatthe bones of the sacrificial
lamb cannot be broken.

(27:52):
Jesus is our ultimate Passoverlamb and was prepared for
sacrifice in this way that Godtold Moses to sacrifice the
Passover lamb.
But Jesus is our ultimate, ourultimate sacrifice.

(28:14):
And I want us to read Psalm I'mserious, we already read that
and we see this fulfilled inJohn, chapter 19.
If you'll turn with me, I'mgetting there and we're going to
start at verse 31, because it'sso critical that we have this

(28:37):
understanding and this is why,my friends, I just feel like it
is imperative that we, asChristians, have this
understanding of the OldTestament, because we cannot
understand the weight of Jesus'ssacrifice if we don't

(28:59):
understand the Old Testament.
It just oh.
I get so excited and pumpedabout this.
But let's start John 19.
Let's start at verse 31.
It was the day of preparation, and the next day was a festival,
shabbat, so that, all so thatthe body should not remain on
the execution stake duringShabbat, the Judean leaders

(29:22):
asked Pilate to have the legsbroken and to have the bodies
taken away.
So the soldiers came up andbroke the legs of the first and
then the other who'd beenexecuted with Yeshua.
Now, when they came to Yeshuaand saw he was already dead,
they did not break his legs, butone of the soldiers pierced his

(29:44):
side with a spear andimmediately blood and water
poured out.
I'm gonna pause, really forjust a quick minute.
It's important that we knowthat it was blood and water,
because if Jesus was still alive, it would have just been blood
that poured out, but the watershows us that Jesus had died

(30:08):
already.
He who has seen it hastestified, and his testimony is
true.
He knows that he is telling thetruth so that you may believe.
These things happened so thatthe scripture would be fulfilled
.
Not a bone of his will bebroken.
And again another scripturesays they shall look on him whom

(30:33):
they have pierced.
Alright.
Last thing, last point for today, is that our Messiah would be
looked as a transgressor.
And again Isaiah 53 tells usthis that our Lord would be

(30:56):
looked upon as a sinner, as atransgressor, as someone who was
dirty and yucky.
But we know that's not true.
Isaiah 53, verse 12, part of ittells us, because he poured out

(31:23):
with his soul to death and wascounted with transgressors for
he bore the sins of many andinterceded for the transgressors
.
So yes, jesus was considered atransgressor, he was considered
a sinner.
And because he was considered atransgressor and he was not a
citizen of Rome, he was giventhe death of a transgressor.

(31:47):
And we read this in Matthew 27,verse 3, and we talked about an
honorable death versus thedeath of a transgressor.
And Jesus was given the mostshameful, disgraceful way to die

(32:09):
.
We read this, matthew 27, verse3, and we see how he was given
this.
And then Judas was given thisfalse remorse and he brought the
silver back saying I've sinned, betraying innocent blood, but

(32:32):
they didn't care.
But they didn't care because hewas counted among the
transgressors.
And Luke, chapter 23, verse 32we read this 23, verse 32 others

(32:56):
, two evil doers, were also ledaway to be put to death with him
.
So Jesus was put to death amongevil men what the world would
consider evil and was treatedlike one of the most nastiest,
yuckiest person that we canimagine being on death row today

(33:18):
.
But we know that that's nottrue.
We know that he was ourspotless victim, our Passover
lamb.
So, yes, there was a lot ofheavy material, but we
discovered that when we realizedthat the Bible is like a

(33:39):
scavenger hunt and we have thischildlike faith and enthusiasm
for the gospel, we can getexcited about learning about all
the things that our Savior didfor us, because one day he's
coming back with his hands, hisfeet and his side that are

(34:02):
pierced and he will say where'syour faith?
And I pray that when thathappens we will be the ones to
say that we already know you areLord.
We already knew, without havingto see you, that you are Lord.
That is my prayer for you guysand that is my prayer that we,

(34:24):
as the adults in the faith, wereable to convey this message to
our children so that they cancome to know the Lord and love
the Lord, and that those who areadults or teenagers who don't
know God, they can see the waythat we live our life and they
can go huh, something'sdifferent with them.

(34:46):
I want to know why.
I want to know why.
That is my hope, that is myprayer.
