Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hi there and welcome to Proverbs 31-1ab, where we
discuss Biblical womanhood andare constantly busy and
sometimes crazy daily life.
I'm Alexis Hieslip and, as awife and mom of two little ones,
I'm always striving and prayingto be a Proverbs 31 woman of
faith.
Today we are continuing ourdeep dive into Messianic

(00:27):
prophecies in the Old Testamentand how we can connect the dots
to the New Testament.
We are surprisingly I can'tbelieve it we are halfway
through the series.
I just can't believe we'vealready gotten to this point and
this is where things are reallystarting to pick up and we're

(00:49):
getting into parts of the storyof our Messiah that we know
really well.
So let's buckle up together anddive on in.
So there are three bigtakeaways that I want to discuss
today in this podcast episode, and the first I feel like could
be a whole series in and ofitself.

(01:11):
So I'm just trying to give abrief overview, and this first
point that I feel like we needto talk about is that, according
to Old Testament prophecy, ourMessiah must be a priest.
Like I said, I feel like thiscould be a whole series in and
of itself, and it might be laterdown the road, but let's just

(01:32):
kind of go into an overview andof what this prophecy would look
like and talk about it in NewTestament terms.
Like I said, maybe down theroad we'll go into a deep dive
into this word, what it means tobe a priest or a cohen in
Hebrew.
But for now let's turn to Psalm110 together, and this is where

(01:55):
we'll see the Old Testament tiein One of them anyway.
Psalm 110, we're going to readthe whole Psalm and the Psalm
tells us this my Lord is a cohenforever is the title A Psalm of
David.
Add a nigh declares to my Lordsit at my right hand until I

(02:16):
make your enemies a footstolefor your feet.
Add a nigh will extend yourmighty rod from Zion rule in the
midst of your enemies.
Your people will be a free willoffering in a day of your power
, in holy splendors from dawn'swomb.
Yours is the dew of your youth.

(02:37):
Add a nigh has sworn and willnot change his mind.
You are a cohen, a priestforever, according to the order
of Malchis.
A deck my Lord is at your righthand.
He will shatter kings in thedays of his wrath.
He will judge among the nations, heaping up with corpses.

(03:00):
He will crush heads over theentire land.
He will drink from a streamalong side there, so his head
will be exalted.
Now, this is a passage ofscripture that, like I said, I

(03:23):
could have a whole series about.
What are they talking about?
This holy priesthood, thisorder of Malchis, a deck that
our Messiah will be a part of?
I don't have enough time andjust even one podcast episode to
fully go into the details and,to be honest, it's something

(03:44):
that I don't fully understandmyself and we need to do quite
some time to dig in and prayabout before I feel like I could
confidently give an in-depthdiscussion about this royal
priesthood.
But what is important is thatwe have this general
understanding is that ourMessiah, who, in this time when

(04:11):
this psalm was written, hasn'tcome yet.
We are told that he will notjust be a priest temporarily.
The key is that he will be apriest, the high priest, forever
, and I feel like that is thebig takeaway that we need to
talk about.
This is something we can wrapour minds around as believers is

(04:34):
that our King, our Messiah, isto be the high priest, not only
just a ruler in a politicalsense, but also the high priest,
the person who is on top whenit comes to religious duties,
because, remember, the highpriest in the temple was in

(04:56):
charge of everything in thetemple and was the person who
went into the Holy of Holies andcommunicated with God, the
Father.
And so this Messiah that was tocome, according to Old
Testament scriptures, would bethe ultimate high priest who
would reign forever.
And it is with this context, this general context that we now

(05:23):
have, without going into toomuch detail, we can look at the
book of Hebrews, which is one ofmy favorite books in the Bible
and, in my opinion, is extremelyunderrated, and I feel like
people do not read the book ofHebrews as much as they should.

(05:47):
So let's turn to the book ofHebrews, because it is chocked
full of these propheticconnections and how Jesus
fulfills them all as Messiah.
If you have not read the book ofHebrews in a long, long time, I
challenge you, whether you area single woman, a married woman

(06:11):
with kids, or married womanwithout kids, or you are in a
relationship with a boyfriend, Ichallenge you to take another
look at the book of Hebrews andtalk about it with your spouse,
because there is a lot of thingsthat are mentioned in Hebrews,
and I want to bring this upbecause to me it is really

(06:31):
important.
There is a lot of things inHebrews that really connect the
dots, and the book of Hebrews iswhat inspired me to do this
whole series, and it is a greatway to use a book of the Bible
that is in the New Testament toteach others and show others how

(06:52):
the Old Testament and the NewTestament are connected.
It is a great tool to use withyour children.
It is a great tool to use as aprayer guide with a spouse.
It is just a really wonderfulbook of the Bible and I hope
that this encourages you to takea look at this underrated book

(07:14):
of the Bible.
And right now we are going to belooking at a couple of
different passages from Hebrews.
Let's start with Hebrews, chapter 5, and it tells us this,
starting in verse 1, for everyCohen, godul, every high priest
taken from among men isappointed to act on behalf of

(07:34):
people in matters relating toGod, so that he may offer gifts
and sacrifices for sins.
He is able to empathize withthe ignorant and the deluded,
since he himself is also subjectto weakness.
So those two verses right therereally do explain the role of

(07:54):
this high priest.
For this reason, he has to makeofferings for sins.
Just as for the people, so alsofor himself, because all these
high priests are men like us,fallen and full of sin, and no

(08:15):
one takes this honor for himself, but only one.
He is called by God, as Aaronwas.
Now this is where it'sextremely important.
Let's focus in on these nexttwo verses, starting at verse 5.
So also, messiah did not glorifyhimself to be made Cohen, god
all high priest.

(08:35):
Rather, it was God who said tohim you are my son.
Today I have become your father.
And he says in a differentpassage you are a Cohen forever,
according to the order ofMelchizedek.
In the days of his life onearth, yeshua Jesus offered up

(08:56):
both prayers and pleas, withloud crying and tears, to the
one able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his
reverence.
Though he was a son, he learnedobedience from what he suffered
and, once made perfect, hebecame the source of eternal
salvation to all who obey him.

(09:17):
Called by God, cohen, god all, according to the order of
Melchizedek.
This passage in scripturebeautifully summarizes Jesus's
mission here on earth, thatJesus is more than just a person

(09:39):
.
Jesus is more than just a greatguy who came to this world.
He is more than just a manwho's a prophet.
He is indeed God in the fleshwho came down onto this earth
and he is the only person whocan be the high priest forever

(10:04):
and forgive sins through thethings that he has done for us
on this earth, and that, to me,is something that is really
mind-blowing when you thinkabout it and when you read it in
scripture, and we also see thisagain echoed in Hebrews,

(10:24):
chapter 6, um, specificallyverse 20.
I want to point out Really,hebrews 5, 6, and 7 fully
emphasize this, but I just wantto focus on verse 20 with you

(10:45):
guys at this moment, and ittells us this Yeshua Jesus has
entered there as a forerunner onour behalf, having become Cohen
Gadol forever, according to theorder of Melchizedek.
And again, like I said, youcould read all of chapters 5, 6,

(11:06):
and 7 of Hebrews yourself andpray and reflect on this.
But chapter 7, verses 15through 17, again have to make
the statement and I think it'sreally important that it's so
emphasized that Jesus is ourultimate priest, and it's

(11:29):
mentioned in three chapters in arow and it's really spelled out
for us.
So this is really an important,um, an important aspect of who
Messiah is that he is a highpriest.
Like I said, we can do a wholepodcast series on this, because
this is an such an importantaspect on who our Messiah is.

(11:53):
And it's reinforced again inthese verses which tell us, and
it is even more evident, ifanother priest were to arise
like Melchizedek, one may, notby virtue of a Torah requirement
of physical descent, but byvirtue of the power of an
indestructible life, for it istestified, you are king forever,

(12:18):
a priest forever, a cohenforever, according to the order
of Melchizedek.
You see, jesus did not comefrom the tribe of Levi, but
rather the tribe of Judah, andthis is telling us, and
reinforcing this thought, thateven though he came from a

(12:40):
different tribe, it doesn'tmatter because he was perfect.
He was perfect and powerful.
So how did this priest, how didthis perfect priest come and
make himself known to the people?
How did this perfect andeternal priest make himself

(13:03):
known to his people in Jerusalem, specifically where the temple
was standing?
And he does not come in the waythat I think a high priest or
king would make a grand entrance.
I don't know about you, butwhenever, ahead of state or,

(13:26):
like the president travelssomewhere.
What comes to mind are big, flashy parades, a lot of
security.
What comes to my mind isthere's a lot of press and the
people who either the presidentor the king of England, if
they're to come.
It's a big spectacle, it's abig show and it's very flashy

(13:49):
and elegant.
But that's not how our king, ourultimate high priest, came to
Jerusalem.
He entered publicly intoJerusalem instead, not with a
show or a white horse with anoble steed, and not like

(14:10):
Aladdin entered Agrabah in themovie, aladdin with all of his
dancers and chariots and goldand wealth, all these physical
items, but instead Jesus enteredhumbly on a donkey, and this
was prophesized in the book ofZachariah long before Jesus ever

(14:39):
walked the earth in the flesh.
So, if you'll turn with me,zachariah, chapter 9, starting
at verse 9.
This tells us rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion, shout,
daughter of Jerusalem.
Behold, your king is coming toyou, a righteous one bringing

(15:00):
salvation.
He is lowly, riding on a donkey, on a colt, the full of a
donkey.
Notice these adjectives that weare told about our high priest,
about our king.
It's not what we think.
It's not flashy, it's not regal.

(15:22):
The adjectives we are given arelowly and righteous.
And that is exactly what ourMessiah Jesus shows us in the
book of Matthew and Mark.
And if you want to read theseaccounts, you can either read in
Matthew, chapter 21, verses 1through 11, or Mark, chapter 11,

(15:47):
verses 1 through 11, and thesepassages explicitly show us that
Jesus did this, just this.
And the people were so excitedand they shouted Hosanna,
hosanna, blessed is he who comesin the name of the Lord.
But this praise does not lastfor very long, and it's all

(16:09):
because of this third point, which is that he, jesus, entered
the temple with strongauthority, and we find this in
the Old Testament, in the bookof Malachi, chapter 3.
So if you'll turn with me thereand starting at verse 1, we

(16:31):
hear this behold, I am sendingmy messenger and he will clear
the way before me.
Suddenly, he will come to histemple, the Lord who you seek
and the messenger of thecovenant, the one who you desire
.
Behold, he is coming.
But Adonai says but who canendure the day of his coming, or

(16:56):
who can stand when he appears?
For he will be like a refiner'sfire and like a soap for
cleaning raw wool, and he willsit as a smelter or a purifier
of silver and he will cleansethe sons of Levi and purify them
like gold or silver.

(17:17):
And we do see this played out,and this is where things can get
really sassy.
You see this what I call asassy Jesus, or a Jesus who, our
Messiah, who takes a publicstand and where people start to
turn on him even more.

(17:38):
And there's three differentplaces in the Gospels that we
see this In the book of Matthew, chapter 21, and Luke, chapter 2
, 27 through 38, we hear thatprophecy again, and also in the

(18:00):
book of John.
So let's turn to the book ofMatthew first, because Matthew,
I think the way he presents thisis really astounding.
So if you'll turn with me toMatthew, chapter 21, we can see

(18:24):
Jesus refining the Levites, thePharisees, and we are told this
in starting at verse 12.
Actually, let's say start, yeah, starting at verse 12.
Then Yeshua entered the templeand drove out all those selling

(18:48):
and buying in the temple.
He overturned the tables of themoney changers and the seats of
those selling doves and he saidto them it is written my house
will be called a house of prayer, but you're making it a den of
thieves.
The blind and lame came to himand the temple and healed them.
But when the ruling priest andthe scholars saw the wonders and

(19:11):
the things he did and he's, andthey saw the children of the
temple crying Hosanna, son ofDavid, they became in Dignite.
They became in Dignite and hebecame hated by the priests, the

(19:32):
scribes, the Pharisees,malevites.
And this is when we see thingsstart to turn.
Now I want us to stop here for amoment, because we're gonna
continue on through the eventsof holy week and the coming
weeks and and talk about thesethings, but before we end, it's

(19:59):
just really important that IWant to strongly Remind us that
we, as Christians, need to be inthe word of God.
We need to be active in ourfaith, in pursuing this truth
about our Messiah, because thereare so many people in this

(20:19):
world who make fun of people whobelieve in Jesus, who
misunderstand People who believein Jesus and who make a lot of
wrong assumptions about Peoplewho believe in Jesus and what
the Bible has to say.
But when we are armed with thistruth, when we have knowledge

(20:41):
of what the Bible says frombeginning to end, and when we
live out our faith in a way thatdemonstrates change in our
lives, we can really have animpact on a world that is full
of darkness, whether it's thegirl in your Pilates class or

(21:09):
your office friend, or whetherit's it's your child who has
been coming home with lots andlots of questions because of
things that Friends have said atschool.
There are so many opportunitiesfor us as Christian women, as

(21:32):
Women who believe that Jesus isour Messiah, to Create a culture
in our world that Loves theLord and a culture that loves
life, and we can create aculture where we return the

(21:55):
focus to our Creator.
But we can only do that if weare in our Bibles, if we are
talking to God constantly, if weare communing with other
believers and then taking allthe things that we learn and go
out into the world and not beafraid to speak this truth.

(22:19):
And I wanna encourage you todaywe are all equipped for this
because we have the Holy Spirit,we have the gift of our Triune
God.
We have the gift of the Spiritwhen we put our trust in Him.
And, my friend, he can doanything.

(22:40):
He can move mountains, he canconvert and change the hardest
of hearts, and we can be a partin that journey for someone.
Just because we plant a seed,he doesn't mean we have to be
the ones to water it, but wehave to be that light in this
world that promotes killingbabies and butchering children

(23:07):
and sterilizing people.
We need to be this voice ofreason and of hope and I hope
that through our Messiah, who sohumbled Himself, who was our
eternal high priest forever, butyet came humbly on a donkey and

(23:32):
spoke truth when it was hard todo, so that we can follow His
example.
I hope that it's your takeawayfrom this episode.
I pray for peace in your lives.
I pray that, if you're not abeliever in Jesus or have

(23:54):
questions, that you reach out tosomeone, that you talk to God,
that you open up a Bible andstart asking questions, and I
pray that Jesus continues tomold and shape your life in a
way so that we can do together,as a community of women, the
