Professor Brian Draper: Interview with Associate Professor Janine Stevenson

In this interview Brian Draper speaks with Janine Stevenson. Janine has combined her interests in old age psychiatry and psychotherapy in her research and practice over many years working in Sydney.

Associate Professor Stevenson has been in psychiatric practice now for over 38 years, working in adult and old age psychiatry. Recently retired from Medical Director of an Older Adult inpatient psychiatry unit as well as seeing outpatients for long-term psychotherapy.

In addition to clinical work she has been involved in research into personality disorders, their diagnosis, prevalence and outcome of psychotherapy, over 30 years. She has been on the board of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders and has presented her research at international conferences as well as publishing in peer -reviewed journals.

She has teaching commitments at the University of Sydney, both with undergraduates and post-graduates. She lectures and supervises post-graduates in Sydney University’s Master of Medicine program, which teaches psychotherapy for victims of complex trauma.

Her work also extends to teaching doctors in China, where psychiatry is a fledgling specialty as well as community voluntary work with GPs and community case managers. Her main interests are with victims of trauma, personality disorders, older adults and dementia.

Brian Draper is an old age psychiatrist and Conjoint Professor, School of Psychiatry, University of NSW, Sydney, Australia. He is senior staff specialist, Older Persons’ Mental Health Service, Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick and Honorary Senior Research Fellow, Neurosciences Research Australia. He is a past Board Member of the International Psychogeriatric Association and General Councillor, RANZCP; past Chair of the Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age, RANZCP and was foundation Chair of the POA Advanced Training Committee. He has published over 400 scientific articles on clinical aspects of dementia and cognitive disorders, suicidal behaviour, alcohol and substance use, depression and carer stress in older people. He received the RANZCP College Medal of Honour in 2019.
