John Giltz is a third generation Marine and father of a Marine, retiring with 30 years’ active service in 2019. A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, his service was ordinary for the times during which he served; he deployed around the world, saw the best and worst in humanity and was fortunate to serve among some of the best people who have ever drawn a breath. Along the entire journey, he was supported by his wife of 35+ years, Gioia, who nearly single handedly raised their three great kids, Wade, Luke and Caroline. He now serves as a Program Director with the Institute for Defense and Business, striving to give back to those who still serve through leadership and professional development programs.
This project is a living memorial to those who fought at Belleau Wood, and a living reminder to those who have and will serve since. It was born from a deeply held awe John has for the bravery and sacrifices of those who served during the battle, the unimaginable courage it took to simply stand and head “into the wheat.” Their actions have inspired and fortified Marines since. In his mind, it is not enough to “never forget,” but rather, we must actively, passionately “always remember.” So, this Memorial Day, and all in the future, these living memorials serve as a touchstone for Marines—or any patriot—to gather, reflect and “ALWAYS REMEMBER.”
