Welcome to Puppy Talk, episodenumber 103.

(00:23):
I'm your host, daleBuchanananan, and today I want
to talk about five tips forbringing home a new puppy.
I get this question a lot frompeople who call me or email me
and are getting ready to bringhome a new puppy.
They haven't hired a dogtrainer yet, but most of the
time they do hire me before theyeven bring the puppy home, and
this is great because we canstart working with this puppy

(00:45):
right away to prevent anyunwanted puppy behaviors.
The first item on the list is topuppy-proof your house.
One of the first things youshould do is make your living
space safe and ready for aplayful and curious puppy.
Don't forget to keep allelectrical sockets out of reach
with outlet plug covers toprevent electrical shock.

(01:07):
Electrical wires and devicecords can also be dangerous if
your new puppy chews them ortrips and gets entangled in them
.
Use cord mates and wire hidersto keep everything out of the
way.
Puppies tend to stumble often,so a sturdy gate at the top of
your stairs will prevent eventhe most persistent puppy from

(01:29):
falling down the stairs.
Sharp edges and furniturecorners can also cause problems,
so corner guards are essentialfor puppy-proofing your home.
Number two set up a sleepingspace.
Since new puppies sleep a lot16 to 18 hours a day a

(01:49):
comfortable puppy crate isnecessary for a good night's
sleep.
The crate must be big enoughfor your puppy to stretch out
and stand fully.
Of course, you also have toaccount for its growing rate, so
you might need to switch to abigger crate later on.
Pick a good crate without anysharp edges and place it
strategically.
You need a corner where yourpuppy can observe what's going

(02:12):
on in the family and get somerest occasionally.
A quiet corner in the livingroom or sitting room is ideal.
Another good idea is toallocate a resting corner in
parts of the house where youwant your puppy to be close to
you.
A suitable, well-placed bedwill be enough.
Number three prepare a drinkingand eating station.

(02:34):
Your puppy will require accessto fresh water, so you need to
place a drinking bowl close tothe puppy crate.
You must also train your puppyto eat slowly early on.
It's a good idea to buy ahigh-quality slow-feeding bowl
to avoid overeating and place itat the designated eating

(02:54):
station, whether that be in thekitchen, the living room, etc.
And place a second drinkingbowl close to it, but not too
close, because spilled food maydirty the water.
Clean the bowls thoroughlybefore every meal, especially
outdoor bowls, since they gathermicrobes and bacteria.

(03:14):
Number four Assemble your puppycare and grooming tools.
Several tools and items willmake caring for your puppy much
easier.
You will need a bathtubsuitable for puppies and small
dogs and a dental care kit withbrushes and pet-safe toothpaste.
You can choose from variousbrushes and combs for basic

(03:34):
grooming, while a Furminatorwill help you deal with shedding
.
Lastly, assemble a caninefirst-aid kit to tackle
emergencies.
You can start with a qualitycommercial kit and add items
suitable for dogs and puppies, such as canine pain relief,
special bandages, a pawprotection cream, etc.

(03:56):
Number five purchase a varietyof high-quality toys.
Your puppy requires a lot ofattention and diversion.
After all, a bored puppy isbound to get in trouble.
To avoid many behavior problems, invest in some high-quality
puppy toys to keep thementertained.
These toys can also help youwith training.

(04:18):
They must be safe, durable andeasy to clean.
They must also offer enoughmental and physical stimulation
for a growing puppy.
Chew and squeaky toys can be alot of fun, but you must also
experiment with activity, puzzles and even treat toys.
Your puppy's taste will evolveas it grows, so be sure to

(04:41):
retire unplayed toys andintroduce new ones.
A Kong and Licky Mat are mypreferred choices.
Undoubtedly, bringing a newpuppy home and raising it
requires a lot of work andpatience, as I've said in almost
every podcast I've done since Istarted Puppy Talk.
Getting all of yourpreparations out of the way

(05:02):
before your puppy arrives meansyou can have some peace of mind,
focus your time and energy onthe puppy itself and fine-tune
your training methods before youapply them.
I hope this information washelpful to you.
If you have any questions, youcan always reach me through the
