SPEAKER_00 (00:04):
Calling men of all ages.
From Boston, Massachusetts, allthe way to San Diego, and
everywhere in between.
Welcome to the Purpose MenPodcast.
Discussing all things to help uslive a life of godly purpose.

(00:25):
Ten minutes at a time.
Here are your hosts, Martin andCraig.

SPEAKER_01 (00:35):
Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast.
We're your host, I'm Martin.

SPEAKER_02 (00:38):
And I'm Craig.
Hey Craig, it's been a while.

SPEAKER_01 (00:41):
It's super this exciting.

SPEAKER_02 (00:43):
Yeah, it is.
It is.
Exciting times.
It has been a long time.

SPEAKER_01 (00:46):
Yeah, for sure.
But listen, I'm pumped up.
I'm excited.
This is not our first one.
Technically, I believe it'snumber 19, right?
But it's been a while.
So we're going to knock off therust.
We're going to hopefully givesome gold to the listeners.
I'm excited.
So what are we talking abouttoday?

SPEAKER_02 (01:01):
Today we're talking about examining ourselves daily.
Okay.
Something that I think uh is Idon't know.
I think it's easy to go aboutyour life and not consider what
you've done all day.
Um, but before we get to that, you know, I just recently was
asked by a guy if we're stilldoing our podcast, maybe like
three weeks ago, I said, no, youknow, we need to get back to it.

(01:23):
So here we are.
Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 (01:25):
I agree.
I agree.
You know, sometimes uh withanything, right, life can get
busy and you just get kind ofget caught up doing what you're
doing, and and next thing youknow, you know, you you're like,
wow, you know, where did thetime go?

SPEAKER_02 (01:36):
Well, and yes, you know, and the uh ultimately what
it turns into is you know yourschedules change or what have
you, but without it's easy tonot be intentional, which will
the intention being intentionalwill play a part in what we're
gonna talk about in a minutehere.
So so it is it's very good to beback, and you know, it there is

(01:57):
much fruit in spending timedoing these things because you
have to put forth effort tostudy them and and and this will
play a part too in payingattention, like just being
aware.
And so I guess with that, let'sget into it.

SPEAKER_01 (02:12):
Yeah.
So examine yourself daily.
Yes.
So lead us off.

SPEAKER_02 (02:16):
Okay, so 2 Corinthians 13 5 states, I'm
gonna read it, it doesn'tactually say examine yourselves
daily, at least in the ESV,which is what I'm reading from.
It says examine yourselves.
I added the daily because weshould be doing it daily.
So it reads, examine yourselvesto see whether you are in the
faith, test yourselves, or youdo you not realize this about

(02:39):
yourselves, that Christ Jesus isin you, unless indeed you fail
to meet the test.
Now interestingly, okay, okay, what do we do with that, right?
Examine ourselves.
Yeah, but but what what's themeasuring stick?
Where where what do we examineourselves with is a question
that I've come up with, or notcome up with, come up against.

(03:01):
You know, it says this, but whatare we doing?
And uh what I I I had thisrevelation at one point that the
next book in the Bible happensto be Galatians.
So Galatians 5, 19 is reallywhere this kicks off.
And so y the viewers or thelisteners, I should say, can't

(03:23):
see this, but I've got thenegatives in green and the the
uh positives in yellow, so it'seasy to easy to see the
difference.
Now here's where we're gonna go.
So here's starting Galatians 519 reads, Now the works of the

(03:47):
flesh are evident sexualimmorality, impurity,
sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enity, strife, jealousy, fits of
anger, rivalries, dissensions,divisions, envy, drunkenness,
orgies, and things like these.
I'm gonna pause right there andsay, things like these.

(04:08):
So, you know, use yourimagination.
It's not just these, it'sanything that's in along the
same fleshly line.
And it continues and it says, Iwarn you, as I warned you
before, that those who do suchthings will not inherit the
kingdom of God.
And it follows it up, Galatians5 22 is where it gets good.
But the fruit of the Spirit islove, joy, peace, patience,

(04:32):
kindness, goodness,faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control against such thingsthat there is no law, and those
who belong to Christ Jesus havecrucified the flesh with its
desires.
And so now going back toGalatians 5 21, it says those
who do such things will notinherit the kingdom of God, but

(04:54):
it doesn't disqualify you as abeliever if you've given your
life to Christ.
But when we examine ourselves, where does our behavior fall?
More in line with the fruit ofthe spirit or more in line with
fleshly desires?

SPEAKER_01 (05:08):
Yeah.
I like it.
So so when you're talking, I'mthinking of two things.
So one, um, I I love that verse.
That's the one verse in theBible where it's a test where we
can determine whether or notwe're in the faith, which I
love.
But it in business we have aterm that we use all the time is
whatever you track and measure, you can improve.
So here we can look and we canwe can one examine ourselves, we

(05:28):
can track it and we can measureit, and we can see if we need
improvement in areas.
Because if you don't track andmeasure, how are you ever gonna
know if you need improvement?
Exactly.
So I think that's a good art.
Let me give you another example.
So maybe somebody's on here andthey're like, well, I don't
really, you know, I'm not inbusiness, so I don't really
okay.
Well, let me give you one we allunderstand.
Let's say we're gonna loseweight.
Well, if we don't ever get onthe scale to do a starting

(05:51):
point, what are we gonna justjudge by how we look in the
mirror?
Our eyes can deceive us.
Yeah, right.
So, like knowing where we are.
So let's say, hey, I'm gonnalose so much weight.
I I get on the scale, I writethat down, and like a month
later, I'm still that number.
Right?
I know that I need to makechanges because if nothing
changes, nothing changes.

SPEAKER_02 (06:11):
Right.
No, well said, and you know, andthat's it.
Now we're coming back to what Isaid earlier.
We must be intentional.
Tracking and measuring isintentional.
That's where you're gonna getthe most success.
And so I w what I was sayingearlier is I think most
Christians are going throughtheir lives not being they're
not even aware things arehappening.

(06:31):
And I I've got a lot to sayabout that, but you must first
be aware for for anything that'scoming your way, any kind of
attack that might lead you intofalling into the negatives you
know that we just mentioned.
If you're if you're justwandering around like in the
dark, not paying attention towhat you're doing, you'll very
likely fall into thosetemptations.

(06:54):
But if we're intentional aboutit and examining our behavior
throughout the day, perhaps, youwill definitely be able to win
that battle.

SPEAKER_01 (07:03):
Yeah, I like it.
You know, and sometimes I youknow, as a man, we can get
discouraged, but I would saythat don't get discouraged.
You know, don't don't look at itlike let's say wherever you are
on the spectrum, let's just doan example of maybe somebody's
way on one side of the spectrumand this is all new to them.
I you know, you can look at itlike, you know, just improving,
you know, just a little bit, youknow, each and every day, or

(07:24):
each and every week, or each andevery month.
Because if you improve even justa little bit, you're gonna do
better and you're gonna bebetter.
So little, little small changescan have a huge ribble effect
later on.
But if we don't, again, go backto, hey, let's measure it and
then let's literally like putthe things in place that are
gonna make us better, you knowwhat I mean?

(07:45):
Then we're never gonna bebetter.
We're just gonna be the sameversion today as what we were
yesterday.

SPEAKER_02 (07:50):
Absolutely.
And you said it it's reallyprogress.
It's not, you know, you youdon't measure it by I didn't do
as well as I think I should.
It's as long as we'reprogressing.
Step one in the progress uhdepartment would be, are we even
remembering to examine ourbehavior?
You know, and so that's what'sso wonderful about God's word is

(08:10):
the ability to it it gives usinstruction and then backs it up
with ways that we can actuallyfulfill that instruction.
You know, so so that's reallythe thing.
Do we Where are we going tofall?
You know, and the fruit of thespirit you can't have you know,
I was just telling somebodyabout this uh the other night.

(08:31):
You can't say, you know, I lovepeople and I'm gentle and kind,
but I'm a terrible road rager, for instance, because you know,
you that what that one portionis going to spoil all the fruit
because you can't be cussingsomebody out on the freeway
that's not patient, that's notgentle, that's not kind, that's
not loving.
And so, you know, something toconsider like where do we fall

(08:54):
on on that?
I don't want to say spectrum,but that's the word I'm
apparently using.

SPEAKER_01 (08:58):
Yeah, that's a good point.
So let me get I'm gonna give ourlisteners, not our viewers, I'm
gonna give our our a visual, right?
So so so being a child of God,you're filled with spirit and
you have the fruit there.
But what happens is a lot oftimes the fruit doesn't show
because you know of fill in theblank.
So like I I like to look at avisual of like a tree.

(09:19):
So if I'm an apple tree and myand my apples are really, really
small, they're probably notgetting a lot of nutrients.
What I mean is the tree's not.
So if we're if we have areaswhere the fruit's not really
small, then we need to getnutrients in us so that fruit
grows.
And the nutrients obviously isthe word of God.
So I men, we're gonna encourageyou.

(09:39):
Like if you're gonna startanywhere, start there.
Get in the word and learn theword.
Because if you don't know theword, then then you don't have a
measuring stick.

SPEAKER_02 (09:48):
Truly.
Yeah, you don't if you yeah, youas a professing Christian,
without the measuring stick, youare walking around blind, you
know.
And you know what's beensomething that's been powerfully
transformative for me was wasthis prayer.
And the reason why I beganpraying is because I had a work
partner that was difficult, andit was just him and I, so we

(10:08):
spent a lot of time together, and and what the prayer was was
Lord help me love him the wayyou love me.
And that as as your heartsoftens and you develop more
love for people, the fruitwithin the fruit of the spirit,
if you have love for people, youwon't be, or I should say, as as

(10:31):
as love grows in you for others, you will be less likely to be
impatient and and you know theroad rage disappears, and you
know, the road rage is just anexample, but um that has been
powerful for me, and you watchthe love develop in your life to

(10:51):
where things just don't botheryou because you know who is
worthy?
I mean, how am I better thananybody else, right?
I mean, we're all only um worthybecause of the work that Christ
did on the cross.

SPEAKER_01 (11:07):
Yeah, that's good.
You made a comment earlier, yousaid um, you know, progress, and
it made me think of the oldline, progress over perfection.
So I would tell you, you know, guys, you're listening today,
don't, you know, you know, don'tbeat yourself up because we may
never have perfection, not herewhile we're in the flesh, but
progress over perfection.

(11:28):
So just a little bit better eachand every day.
You know, maybe ask yourselftoday or this week, you know,
what areas do you really want toimprove in?
What areas have that smallfruit?
Maybe it's your relationshipwith your wife, maybe it's your
relationship with your children, like, you know, whatever it is,
maybe write that down.
And um, you know, what are thethings that you need to do to be

(11:48):
able to improve it?
But first and foremost, man,we're gonna encourage you, like,
spend time in the Word becausethat's where you're gonna learn
where the barometer is onanything in your life.

unknown (11:59):
Amen to that.

SPEAKER_02 (12:01):
That is key.
And I always encourage do it inthe morning, right?
When you're when you're when thethe battles or stresses of the
day haven't come, you you'resetting your mind, focusing it
on God before those things come.

SPEAKER_01 (12:14):
That's good.
Good.

SPEAKER_02 (12:16):
Yeah.
Great challenge to the men thatare listening.
