years, you don't know what theX-Men is.
I'm going to try to give you abullet point.

I'm sure there is a greatYouTube video somewhere or a
podcast that somebody will loveto tell you all about it, but
X-Men was created bywriter-editor Stan Lee, of
course, and artist co-plotterJack Kirby.
The team first appeared in theX-Men no 1 in September of 1963.

They were basically createdbecause of the success of
Spider-Man, hulk Thor, iron manand Fantastic Four.
Basically, he wanted to createanother group of superheroes,
but he just was lazy and didn'twant to have to explain how they
got their power.
So he group of superheroes, buthe just was lazy and didn't
have to explain how they gottheir power.
So he just said, what if theywere born with it?
I mean, it works, it works, um,but it didn't initially, so it

didn't do super well sales wise.
It was initially canceled in1970 due to low sales and
following its 1975 revival ofthe direction under chris
claremont, it became one ofmarvel's most recognizable and
successful franchises.
Chris is really the one whokind of made what we know as
X-Men today, made all thechanges.
A lot of the main storylinesyour Dark Phoenixes, days of
Future Past come from his run inthe 80s and 90s.

Pretty much oh interesting, andfrom there you know they've
appeared in numerous books,television shows, obviously the
movies and video games.
The team X-Men may refer to theteam itself, but there's also
just tons of spin-offs and stuff.
Specifically, uh, the animatedseries was released in 92 and it
ran till 97 and it was on fox'sfox kid programming block, you

know, back when they hadsaturday morning cartoons and it
was cool and everything wasgreat and that really, like you
know, we we talk about iron manand thor and captain America.
That's the MCU.
Back then nobody gave a crap,nobody cared who they were.
It was all about the X-Men.
Specifically, your Holy Trinitywas Wolverine, spider-man and
Hulk in the 90s.
But the X-Men were just thatother cool team.

They had the video games, theyhad this TV show which really
helped bolster, I think, a lotof 90s millennial kids' love for
the characters and obviously90s millennial kids love for
this, for the characters, andobviously it ran through 97 and
I think that's what helped buildthe ability for them to make a
movie, because fox 20th centuryfox, now owned by disney
overlords uh attained the filmrights to the team and other
characters in 94 for 2.6 milliona bargain, oh, wow yeah

remember, remember before themcu was, the mcu marvel was
going bankrupt and they wereselling off characters.
So not a thing, not a thing.
But uh, brian singer, aquestionable, potentially
redacted name.
He's known for directing theusual suspects, but he was hired
and did the first film in 2000and its sequel in 2003 and the
x-men movie series, I would say,has a lot of highs and lows.

Um, if you guys would agree,you know you, for for those
first two, you have the laststand and wolverine origins, and
then you get wolverine, whichwas okay, you get logan, which
was phenomenal, and then theyhad their spinoff uh prequel
series, kind of with first classand days of future past, which
kind of blended the two uhfranchises together yeah um,
it's just, it's spawned offmultiple films, multiple

spinoffffs of Wolverine Deadpoolis technically considered a
spinoff of this world because hewas a 20th Century Fox
character at the time and it allculminated or I would say
crashed and burned, if you willwith the last two movies,
apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
And then the standalone NewMutants concluded the series
after a 20 year run.
Yeah, so five years later,x-men 97 comes out.
Everybody's like, oh yeah, thisis what we love about X-Men.

And then everybody's like, cool, thumbs up, let's make some
more X-Men.
And I think we've got therights back and everything.
So before we dive super into it, I just want to ask you guys
what was your first experiencewith the X-Men?
We're all different age levelshere, so I'm just curious when
you saw it, what you saw, whatwas your content?

Aly (06:01):
so for me it was, uh, definitely the x-men movie.
In 2000, apparently, mybrothers watched the animated
series but.
I do not remember that at allyeah um, but yeah, I remember
going to the theater to watchthe first x-men.
Um, I think I've seen all ofthem in theaters until nice,
until apocalypse, I think that'safter that.
It was like I don't know if Iwant to pay money to see these,

but uh, yeah, no, I recentlyrewatched X-Men and X2, which I
think it was my second timeseeing X-Men, because I did not
remember it at all.
But X2, I remembered quite abit, but yeah, that was my first
experience with the X-Men.

Yeah, so, cass, what about you?

For me, it was something that my brother, my older
brother, would watch, and I'dseen it in the background, but I
didn't start watching it forthe first time until maybe like
2018, 2019 okay um, and my main,or maybe 2020, but my main
reason was for Iceman, who wasplayed by Sean Ashmore, because
I saw that he was in it.
But then after that, I was like,wait a minute, I actually do

enjoy these movies.
It has nothing to do with hissmall character in the three uh,
first movies and then days offuture past, but no, that was
the first time I ever watchedthem and I watched them all in
order.
I made sure to like buy everymovie or watch it on disney plus
prime you dove in, okay, I did.
The only thing that I didn't endup seeing was the new mutants,
but everything else I did makesure to watch, but no, that was

New Mutants kind of feels like the forgotten stepchild,
redhead stepchild like the shipwas already sinking, it had been
delayed so many times, and itactually has a lot of stars
we're actually discussing, likeAnya Taylor-Joy's in it, maisie
Williams, the guy who playsJonathan from Stranger Things
yeah, charlie Heaton yeah,charlie Heaton, but I think it
was meant to be a reboot ofsorts kind of spin-off, but by

then everybody's like, uh, it'sover and disney's bought us
anyway, so uh, that that's whereI think I why I didn't watch it
, because I was like, what morecan you do?

like I felt like logan ended it perfectly and then you
had, like you know, apocalypsedark phoenix.
And then I just felt like darkphoenix was kind of confusing to
begin with, so I was like itended there.
Why did we need the new mutants?

Nick (08:03):
sure, yeah, I think the x-men movies you can definitely
kind of pick and choose whichones you want to consider canon
or you want to watch likere-watching.
I watched one and two and daysof future past leading up and
then x-men 97 obviously.
But I was very much like youknow.
Other than a few kind ofquestions I would have in days
of future past, this feels likea much better trilogy, if you
will yeah, those are fun movies.

Aly (08:25):
I really enjoy the, the first class and and days of
future past right, yeah, firstclass, yeah, I enjoy both of
those.

Nick (08:30):
Those are fun yeah, my experience, like obviously grew
up in the 90s I was aware ofx-men again, my very sheltered
upbringing.
I I don't think I wasn'tallowed to watch them, but I
just assumed I was because theywere that cool.
I was like I'm probably notgonna be allowed to watch this,
but I was aware of them.
I was very much like the supernintendo psychogenesis games and
stuff at the time the tv show.

So when, when x-men the moviecame out, I was like this is
cool, like my uncle actuallyconvinced my dad to take us to
go watch it in theaters and it'sprobably one of my first like
live action movies I saw intheaters.
That was pg13 and up.

Big experience for young Nick back in 2000.

But anyway, like I said, we'vegot a lot of X-Men to cast.
I'm sorry we can't cast all 100plus of these.
It's like Pokemon, there's toomany, can't collect them all,
sadly.
But the goal here again is tocast them as if they're going to
make when they make the movie,and we're kind of leaning more
towards the idea that they'regonna lean into, like the 97

comic book accuracy of thecharacters.
Right, because when x-men 2000came out it was in a time you
know, blade to come out twoyears before and it kind of
shown like okay, there's someinterest, there's some success
that can be made with thesecomic book movies, because it
was very hit and miss beforethat for every batman and
superman you had just a spill ofmovies that just were not
successful at all and it kind ofstarted that first wave of

comic books with spider-man,x-men, the blade movies, even
hellboy can kind of get throwninto that mix as well.
the fantastic four movies um,they're likable in their own way
but they're not, not they'renot, they're not top tier by any
means, but that was the firstway before we got you know, iron
man started things off and thedark night kind of transitioned
us between those two eras.

Yeah.

So, yes, it's a dream cast episode.
We're not completely adheringto our rules because we don't
know what movies people aregoing to be involved in in the
next two or three years.
But we're doing our best to tryto not just be fan casty about
it, where we're just throwing alisters at you and being like
this is who I think should beand it's like, but they're not
going to play the smaller role,a big cast kind of thing.
I'm saying that maybe cast andally actually did go that far

and are just like throwingeverybody at the wall I just I
had fun with mine yeah I had funwith mine.

I I'm yeah, I had a Cool cool cool.

So, yes, we're moving to 2027, we'll say they probably
will announce it.
It might be later, it might besooner, but that's what we're
going to go with.
So we're casting with peoplethat are popular right now, that
are acting right now.
That's your general rules.
Luckily, we have no kids in themovie.
We have a potential teenager ortwo maybe maybe, and from there
it's all free game, basically.
But yeah, because there's somany, because we're trying to

keep this light and brief foryou guys as a mini, so we're
just going to dive right in andwe're just going to start off at
the top and, like I said,there's tons of x-men.
So we're actually start.
Each of us have chosen an x-man.
Initially I said pick whateverx-men you want and we're going
to cast them.
Each of us will cast one.
But, uh, each of us are castinga different one.
So I'm gonna flip an imaginarythree-sided coin and cast.

So tell me which x-men did youchoose to cast for the open
round?

Cass (11:33):
so I picked ice man just because of the fact that he is
the one that I did lean more,more towards when I first
watched these movies and Ithought it would be kind of fun,
because I really actually didlike his character.
I wish that he had more and.

Aly (11:45):
I feel like.

Cass (11:46):
Days of Future Past.
Like actually did like a bitwith him, like in the beginning
and then helping with Wolverineand stuff.

Nick (11:52):
But I honestly forgot he was in Days of Future Past and I
was like oh, sean Ashmore'sthere, that's cool.
So Iceman also his real name,bobby Drake from Long Island,
new York, in the comics.
Uh, the voice actor DennisAkiyama voiced him in the old
X-Men series, but he's played bySean Ashmore in the first two
or three X-Men movies in Days ofFuture Past.
This guy, in case you didn'tfigure it out, he has the

ability to manipulate ice andcoal by freezing water vapor
around him, freeze objects aswell as cover his body with ice.

Like his first movie when he did the Frozen Rose.

When Wolverine comes in and then second one is just like
hey, uh, can you?
First he's like you got anybeer here.
He's like it's a school dude.
So he just gets a soda pop andhas him, has him freeze it,
freeze it for him.
But uh, ice man's personalityin the comics, uh, he's.
They say.
One of ice men's bestpronounced personality traits is
that he is kind of like the icehe manipulates.
He's not cold, but he'stransparent.
He's devastatingly honest.

He's very upfront with hisemotions and his thoughts all
the time.
I feel like Sean did a decentjob, kind of conveying that,
given the limited capacity ofhis role in the movies.
Yeah, that is kind of.
The one issue with the X-Menmovies is it is very much an
ensemble comic, it's a teamthing.
But very clearly as we gofurther into the movies this
becomes the.

Wolverine show?
Yeah, absolutely, and so a lotof characters kind of fall to
the shadows because of it.
But we get little glimpses withlovable, fun characters like
this.

Cass (13:16):
Well, I think that's why it's hard making the movies,
because you only get to see somany characters.
That's why you said with Wolver, wolverine and even like
Magneto, professor X, likeyou're just seeing these
characters a lot.
So then when you have smallercharacters like Iceman, maybe
even like Nightcrawler or anyoneelse, like it's just kind of
you only get them for fiveminutes and then you're on to
like Wolverine for the next 20minutes.

Nick (13:35):
Right, yeah, and I mean that's just that just happens.
It's you have your main cast,your main people, and then you
have the supporting cast.
It's just that with superheromovies, with x-men, you're gonna
have a lot of very interestingcharacters.
They all have their ownsuperpowers and stuff.
It is what it is.
Yeah, um shot ashmore you don'tknow who he is, he really.
This was kind of his big comingout uh movie.
Before that he had appeared inanamorphs, if you know what that

Oh man, later on he's in thedisney channel movie cadet kelly
so good.
And recently he's just poppedup in TV shows and stuff and
done some voice work like inAlan Wake to the video game.

So I went kind of a fun pick Ithis is what I was mentioning to

supernatural actor, but I thinkit's just because I don't see
him.
It's not a, it's not a bigactor.
He has been in a few movieslike edge of 17 and a couple of
like little horror movies.
Not a lot of people would knowthem but he plays as Jack Klein

in Supernatural, so his name isAlex Calvert Alex.

And, if you want to be specific, alexander Calvert, but
he I thought would be fun.

a lovable character insupernatural.

for jack but, I don't get to seehim that much and it's not a
whole celebrity crush, it's justthe fact that I do like his
acting.
I think he does a lot, but he'sbeen kind of like pushed into
TV and kind of like smallermovies.

So I thought he'd be kind of funbecause I think he would do
kind of the same thing that SeanAshmore did in movies.

Rufus.
He's in the Arrow show.

Yeah, it seems like he's kindof been in TV, so this again it
kind of lines up that this couldbe like here's the young guy,
here's a chance for him to be ona movie.
It's kind of the same trajectoryas Sean Ashmore, even, even,
like you, go further back toBates Motel in 2013.

give this guy the chance to playkind of the younger, kind of
heartthrob, uh, iceman.
He in the movies he's portrayedas the teenager love interest
of Rogue, and I think in thecomics he might be a little aged

as kind of a happy-go-lucky,practical joker.
He's a fan of swashbucklingfiction, I guess.
But the other notable thingabout nightcrawler is he's
catholic and while it's notemphasized as much earlier on in
in later depictions and themovies, uh, that's kind of like
one of his prominent things.
He's very vocal about his faithand you don't see that a lot

Those are the two main guys,but uh, he's a fun character,
obviously it's.
There's a reason.
He's a fan favorite and yes, hewas so great in number two and

It was so upsetting because I, like I said, I really
enjoyed him in x2 and I thinkalso, if I'm not mistaken, I

Cut himself every time he has asin or something, or any time

It's really interesting, he's areally interesting and
compelling character and Ialways felt very sympathetic
toward him For sure he's verylikable.

He's played by Adrian Hughvoice actor, but in the movies
he's played by Alan Cumming.
Most people would know AlanCumming from golden eye.
He's kind of the tech bad guykind of character.

probably the peak of alancumming's career, in my personal

But he's also played Nightcrawler's, played by Cody
Smith McPhee.
Yeah, people know him from letme in the road dawn of the

and nineties, we can bring backthe original movie X-Men and
they started pulling innightcrawler and other people

We're in america and it's sucha pocket and there's so much
cinema and actors that come fromall over the world outside of

sometimes you get those actorsthat are from other countries

an infant, so they sent himwith bishop into the future and

So you get a couple of those inthe X-Men world, but his power
is as you could guess, itinvolves metal and magnetism.

actress.
She's obviously attractive.
All these actresses are we'rein hollywood, everyone's
attractive but I think I justthink she has the right uh, the
right uh level of uh temperance,if you will like, as an actress

figure to the rest of the x-menand then also like the
supportive role for our, ourcyclops.
But then also, when push comesto shove, you're gonna be like
you're about to see what I'm allabout yeah, yeah oh crap yeah,
you don't want to mess with herright exactly, yeah, I love all
three of those choices.

I think either there's there's strengths to all of them
, for sure, I think rileydefinitely leans into that.

The younger idea that you have cass, and then, uh, I like
olivia cook, just in general.

So I think you can trade her with evan and mine as well,
I think, I think riley is only ayear, a year younger than, uh,
evan rachel.

The reason I put him at the top, cyclops scott summers, leader
of the team of x-men, is becausehe, of all the people that got
nerfed in the movies, I feellike poor scott got nerfed the
worst yep yeah he was just apushover yeah like re-watching
the first two movies.

They made you so lame yeah, theymade you such a like and you've
got hugh jackman wolverine overhere being cool, so it's just
like what can you do?
But, man, james marston, I'm sosorry they did that to you and
he that was like his breakoutrole too, like he goes on to be

a lot of talent, he's great,yeah, and then he's, he's also

There's some connective tissue there but I'd like to
think that days of future, past,at least, gave him something

back to base form.

So if you don't know who scottsummers actually is, he's
actually from anchorage alaska,in the comics oh he is the
leader of the x-men uh, he's ina relationship with Jean Grey.
His power he shoots beams outof his eyes.
But, to be more correct, he'scapable of generating concussive

force-based red-colored beams.
And that and you'll see in theshow Allie, if you keep watching
X-Men 97, has levels to it.
And you'll be like oh, there's areason.
Scott Summers is cool, but theydo such a good job in 97 of
like redeeming him and remindingpeople like this dude's cool
Like cause he has a captainAmerica kind of very serious
kind of about him.

But and and like the dynamicwhen they have, like Nathan
cable, the son being brought in,there's that family father
dynamic kind of going on.
He's an interesting characterand I think my hope is that in
this new movie he'll be given alot more to do and flex in those
in this movie, agreed, um, mypick for it.
I'll just go right off the batyeah is this is also.
This is the other part I throwmoney at.

a lot of people knew, becauseanytime I brought it up to
people they're like what, whatare you talking?
What is this movie?

it's the spiritual sequel to that director's uh other
movie.
That name escapes me.
Right now everybody wants someglenn powell.
It's directed by RichardLinklater, who directed the
movies Before Sunrise.
Boyhood, dazed and Confused isthe movie.
I believe that is a spiritualsequel Okay, interesting yeah.
But yeah, that's a good oneGlenn.

years, like since being a fan,max Theriot, that would be my

Yeah, a lot of TV.
Okay, I'm seeing it now, Ithought he would be a really,
really good leader.
Leader and especially like,because Bates Motel didn't stick
with like the Norman Batesstory at all okay because he was
pretty much his character waslike Norman's half brother, so
he still plays like a leadingrole, like being like the older
brother.
So I could see that, withCyclops being the leader caring

for Jean, I just think he wouldhave like a really good time
with it.
I again I did consider JeremyAllen White, but I was like, let
me go with someone that reallyis not recognized as much
anymore.
He was more of a kid actor,yeah, and then now he's just

No, I struggled with this onetoo, because I was in the
mindset of like he kind of giveslike that Captain America vibe
in the show, yeah, and I wastrying to find someone that
would work perfectly.
And I was trying to findsomeone that would work
perfectly and I just I keptfalling flat.
So I ended up going with Max,just because I do like his
acting this is all jokes asideabout celebrity crushes, this is
me being 100% honest, ok, Ithink he is a good actor.

Give him a chance to be anadult actor now.

I think the issue with cyclopsis that the danger is he becomes
bland by being too much of acaptain america knockoff yeah,

background by a gambit or awolverine or magneto and
professor x or rogue even, yeah.
So, yeah, those are interesting.
You stuck to your guns cast,I'll say that, and he had some.

lot of big names that have beentossed around, and the thing is
that, with these, with thesebig ensemble casts, they do tend

to pick people like this outthat we may not be super
familiar with, but you're likeoh yeah, they were in that, that
and that, so you might end upbeing more accurate than us, but
time will tell it's still, butI mean, I think we all picked
pretty like pretty solid choicesfor sure.

That haven't really been in much, so I appreciate the
thought yeah, you're giving themthe reboot, the start, the
chance to do more.
Allie and I, I think, playedmore in like some reputable

might need a reboot of sorts.
