Chapter 27 – Summary

Dr. Alexandra Conner reviews a risk assessment report from Dr. Lana Harding about the three creators of the Quest AI system—Samir Patel, Robert Jackson, and Thomas Allen. Lana concludes that Thomas Allen poses the greatest threat due to his company's dependence on cybersecurity, which could be heavily impacted—positively or negatively—by advances in AI. Conner agrees with Lana’s risk hierarchy, though she notes Lana’s risk scale is not aligned with CIA standards and will need adjustment.

Meanwhile, Mark Peltier rejoins Colonel Weaver at the hotel restaurant, freshly showered and with a new haircut—charged to the room. Unimpressed by the limited breakfast options, he convinces Weaver to take him elsewhere. Over breakfast at a nearby diner, Weaver informs Mark that his wallet and phone are still unaccounted for, drawing a sarcastic (and failed) attempt by Mark to claim a $1,000 cash reimbursement.

Weaver outlines Mark’s next steps: that afternoon, Mark will be flown to Langley, Virginia, to meet George Ramsey (CIA’s Special Activities Center head) and Dr. Conner. Mark expresses concern about covert operations while still dressed in Army fatigues. Weaver assures him that after the briefing, the CIA will supply his wardrobe and equipment.

Mark also presses Weaver about the signed letter guaranteeing immunity for his past real estate transaction. Weaver confirms it’s ready and will be witnessed by General Colin Fraser at 1 p.m., just before Mark’s departure. They’ll also stop at the Communications Office for his new phone and the Post Exchange to replace his wallet.

As they wrap up breakfast, Mark jokes once more about the missing $1,000. Weaver remains unfazed—and the two men continue their uneasy but increasingly cordial collaboration.
