Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is rating Nick nice rading Nick here nice episode.
This one bit of an origin to preview. I catch
up with a big paddle pop Aaron Woods of course
Manly front row and co pilot for doing some football
down here in Canberra as well.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Wood Z, Risky, how are we going?
Speaker 1 (00:23):
I'm going to rule now?
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Just off air.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
You mentioned that having a day off there at Manly,
but yet the gym, mate, that that don't make them
like that anymore.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
We'll put it this way, Risky. I've got three kids
at home. I'd rather just be out there burning off
some steam and I put him in the crate and
then I come back out. Then we go to the path.
So just give me my little time away from the kids.
I can sort of just be in the moment with
myself and then go outside and then run around with
all the chaos of those.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Limiting I like that, mate, being the moment with yourself,
because you can lose yourself in parenthood, can't you.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Oh, you definitely get risky. You know how it is, mate,
You just don't know what's around the corner. You can
just plan for everything and the complete opposite happens. So
this is one of those where you get about now
to yourself and you can just sort of relax. You
pump out a little gym sessh and then like I said, yeah,
you're back to the chaos where anything can tet you
around the corner.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
What does mean is when you just clean the as
a man too, You know, we clean the laund room
up with so much pride what you've just done, and
the kids come back and they trash it within ten
minutes and it's just chaos again, isn't it?
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Oh risky? This morning I cleaned the windows. We've got
these glass windows at home, and I thought i'd do
a good job for the missus beause it's froe of
those jobs that's the nightmare. Yeah, it's like I got
to do it and literally, I'm telling you, mate, five
minutes they had their hands on it and I could
see the handprints, and mate, I was just like, you
just get get kidding.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
And they managed to make it worse than it was
before you cleaned it.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Mate, you're spot on, mate loose. They just had some breakfast,
so they had all their butter from the toes and
munched into the window and I was like, why do
I even bother? Mate? Why do I bother, I know.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
And then you end up leaving it and by end
of the week it just looks like you're living in
a dump. And then you get someone coming over and
then you're just forever scrambling to clean it up.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Oh, Risky made the missus comes out and goes, what
have you been doing all day? I said, And please
don't start, Please don't start.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
You've been around for a while in regards to ener equery.
Obviously it's not your first radio now, and you've quite
experience in regards to your preparation and your downtime. How
do you really prepare now and really embrace a day
off because it's pretty tricky, isn't it. In our all
season it's a long season, lots of pressure from above,
lots of pressure even from sponsors these days, and to perform.
(02:23):
But for yourself, I know you have more of a
relaxed role.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Well, Risky, it's really changed over the time because obviously
when I first played first grade, I was living at
home with my mum. You know, I still had I
had my misses who were like only just sort of
seeing each other at that time, no kids, So you
had a lot more time to yourself a lot more
downtime you could keep like you didn't have to do
so much. You know, now I've got three kids, I've
got a wife. There's so much to do around the house,
(02:48):
you know, there's so much to do. Well. I do
a lot of radio work. You know. It's also making
time for yourself, making time for your kids. Moments you've
got to be a little bit selfish. Probably the only
time I'm a little bit selfish with the mississes. And
maybe the night before a game, you know, just like
the sort of just be nice and quiet, watch if
it's putt he's on watching footy, you know, put the
(03:10):
kids a better bit early. I don't really go out
night before a game, whether it's say she's got a
dinner sort of organized. I just like to keep low
key because I believe that, you know, if you want
to have a good preparation, you need to sort of
focus on yourself a little bit. But then in the
same moment, you've still got three kids that you can't
just abandon, you know, You've still got to be a father,
and they're pretty good. Like my little fellow, he loves
(03:30):
the rugby league. Maybe we just sit there and watch
it together. And then you know, days off, one of
them's at school, another tour, not not quite yet to
go into school. So, like I said, now sort of
the gym. You know, the gym's got a bit of
the sauna's got to pull, you know, get to put
the kids in the crash. You know. Sometimes I get
the train of the misters here. She's a personal trainer herself.
(03:52):
So one of the big things in our in our lifestyle,
in our house is that we like to keep busy
and keep active, you know. So and then after this
not just taking them down the park and then probably
put them for a sleep. And I don't get up
too much risky. I'm a pretty pretty laid back guy,
you know, not really much phases me. But like I said,
probably more than twenty four hours before a game, I
get a bit more, a little bit selfish for myself
(04:13):
and just worry about the preparation for the game.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Well they're saying that too. If you have some time
out for yourself, it makes you a better dad, and
therefore you become a better person for your family and
you can actually deliver a lot more better Otherwise, if
you're just always stressed and carrying yesterday's baggage. Then that
can be problematic, can't it.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, that's right risky. Maybe if you let the mood
swings get a hold of you know, you know you're
going to get sup Like you know, it's like being
a dad. Some knights are going to be really good.
You get a great sleep. Next the kids could be
up all night, and like I said, if you can
sort of just get a little bit to yourself, you know,
refresh the mind. You know, know that you know you're
doing it all for a great cause, like you love
(04:50):
your kids so much, but you're also in the same sense,
you don't want to be that one dad that's sort
of moody, angry that clicks at little things, gets a
real frustrated kids because it's not there. It's not fair.
It's not fair on the kids. You know that they
don't understand what's going on. They just get so excited.
Like every day I come home risk the three or
the two kids. I've got a little baby as well,
they just sprin to the door and they get super excited.
(05:12):
So that puts a massive smile my face in it.
It puts you back in your place and goes you
know what these kids idolize you. They don't know what
you've been through throughout the day, and they're just so
happy for you to come home. They just want to play.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
That is the best thing about being a parent. When
you have a day, whatever day you had, and you
could have the crappiest day where everything just didn't go
right for you, and you walk into that door and
when your little kid runs over to you. Now, my
little ones in kindergarten, So when I go and pick
her up and pick up at like three o'clock when
she comes running from the door, you could have just
lost your life savings right and then, but that just
(05:46):
that moment, it's the best, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Oh, it's the best riskin you know, it's even better
when they want to come to you and not the mother.
It makes me even happier. The kids love it. And
then like soon as they come home, my oldest fellow buster,
he goes, let's go to park and kick the footy,
let's play tackle footy. And I love it because, well, personally,
I don't know my dad, so I'm getting to do
everything that I didn't do as a kid for my son.
I love it so much, mate.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
That's beautiful. Man having to rewrite those let's just say,
wrongs that you experienced making sure your kids don't Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
I've basically learned everything on what not to do, and
and you know get I get to give all my
love to my young blokes and my daughter and it's
the besting in the world.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Well, without getting to doctor phil on you mate, you've
done well there. You've you've you've patched up those holes
and and there's a look on the outside, there's no
signs of any internal internal chaos going on there.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Paddle pop.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Mate, the Origin side, of course, so you've been there
many many times. How do you feel with these changes
that Matches made for game two?
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Risk made really happy? You know, I was a little
bit sort of disappointed, me mate, James Tedesca didn't make
Origin one, but then got the opportunity, you know. But
you know, I think now that you know, looking at
the way Madge wants to play the style that he
wants to play it, it does suit still in the
woods and he's going to be a perfect hit. Talk
about a Paul Barger does his quad you know, leading
(07:11):
up to the game in game one and he misses
his opportunity, but then he plays so well on the
weekend gets another another crack'm I'm super excited to see
how he goes The rock star is back. Thank you
very much, Latrell Mitchell. How good is this going to
be the bigger the moment for Latrell? I reckon it's
the better he plays, So this game I give me
a goosebumps talking about it now. I'm so excited to
(07:32):
watch him play because I reckon this could Like you know,
a lot of people have got really a funny opinion
on the Troll. They might think he's cocky, they might
think he's a big ego, but you know, I'll played
with him before in the Australian squad and he's an
absolute champion of the Globe. Like he's very quiet, very shy,
you know, doesn't give too much away, keeps himself quite reserved.
(07:53):
But you know when he goes on those field and
he and he's got his mindset locked in, there's no
roof a player in the game. And I'm super excited
to watch him play because I reckon this is his
moment to shine. It could be, you know, the turning
point of Latrell's career where everyone's going to be like, wow, look,
look have a look at this bloke. So he's one
I'm definitely looking forward to watching. You know, obviously my
(08:17):
great mate Mit through Moses back in there, missed it
through Origin, through injury of Origin one. He tried so
hard to get back before the before the game one,
to get a game in, but he just wasn't ready.
And you know, I thought that was the right thing
to do. You don't want to go into Origin underdone.
He got a couple of good games under his belt
now and he'll be ready for it. And the surprise
(08:37):
packer for me was was Connor Watson. I thought that
was completely left field, But the more I look at
it risky, the more I like it, because look, I thought,
probably Matt Burton should have got the opportunity to play,
being there in the eighteenth man in game one. But
then I look at it, you know, Reece Robson, what
a player he had to play the whole eighty minutes
with man down on the field, and I just think
(08:58):
we need to give a little bit of arrest. And the
good thing we can kind of watch at nine. We
can put him at seven six. One could even put
him in the back row a lot because that's where
he plays for the Roosters, so really good versatility and then,
as Madge said throughout the week, reminds him so much
of Craig Wing. So I think all the changes really
do suit us. So I'm really really excited to see
what they can come up with Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
And Conda Watson would he he doesn't kind of carry
that baggage and he's got that kind of ignorance where
a big occasion like this probably won't get to him.
He'll just come out and plays natural game and actually
accelerate with the moment.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
I think he's for this sort of arena like. He's
a pretty happy, gir lucky guy. Everyone you speak to
about him, they've all got not a bad word to
say about him. He's absolutely champion. You know. I've got
to work with him on occasion through the radio, you know,
and Mate, what a lovely guy is the guy you
always want to keep in contact with, and you're not
the funny thing. He is risky round two this year,
so not not the Las Vegas game, but only come back.
(09:51):
I played against him in reserve grade, so he was
playing reserve grade with and get this Angus crime was
in the back row as well, so it shows you
how good and like how well they're playing because they
couldn't make the starting side or let alone the seventeenth
the Chicks started the year. Now they've pushed for original selections,
so that's just come such a long way.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Well, we did the game together when the rate when
the Roosters came to Canberra, he wasn't even an eighteen
and he actually gave me the halftime shed's report.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
The player unbelievable, isn't it. It's unbelievable man, just to
show you like just a blob that gets knocked down,
and then the mindset of him to come back and
the way he played like he was enormous for the
Roosters when he come back.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
And it hasn't all gone smooth for him. But look
now he runs out in a blues jersey. That's the reward,
right obviously.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
And then last year obviously had a poor runner injuries,
probably had a poor run last three or four years
of injury. But really happy to see him get his opportunity. No,
he's taken out with both hands, like he could have
sat there and sulked and complained and wondered what everything's
against me, but mate always had a smile on his face,
always come in every time I did. Coming with him
was made one stage he have his leg on the
(11:00):
like machine to keep it straight because when he had
used to tell attend and he cracked it, he had
he couldn't move it like you needed to let it
grow and needs be in a straight league position. So
absolutely crazy. He's had some setbacks, but jeez, he's ready
to go spin.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Through the ring is but now he steps into the
ultimate ring which is at the original level. Tell us
about your mate, Jake Davoivich.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Oh, I'll beg Jakie O mate, one of the happiest,
one of the nicest blokes. Obviously he was probably you
know in yourself disappointed didn't get all the game time
in game one, But how are the circumstances you know,
we lost, we lost the player through sent off a
man down. It just changes, It just throws the interchanged
plan completely out of whack. And Jakie could have sat there,
he could have complained he but he went all right
(11:43):
and like he just got back on top. So I'm
so happy for him. He's just moved on.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
How is this kinya rugular league?
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Player, Oh, mate, tell me about it. He made. He's
one of the nicest bloats You'll be like, honestly, you
look at him, even his body like he's got a
body of an accountant where he just goes out there.
He's one of the best tackle tech things you've ever seen.
He just hits blokes, he rocks them and sometimes he
even ask him if they need a hand up and
if you can if you hit him too hard?
Speaker 1 (12:08):
Well, how does he like it? Manly? Like off the
field and with the young blokes.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
I'm absolute champion, merely through and through man I So
you think that the traworviis brothers, you know, once a
week or once every two weeks they get the meet
and they put a barbecue up for the boys after
the captain run. They're remarkable family, not just him, his
brother being his brother Tom and the old man even
comes in as well, so they they all cook the
barbecue and they just get it all go and they're
such a lovely family. The Balkan in the mate is
(12:34):
the Croatian or I don't know.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Or they're half pro half server apparently.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Yes, creation and Serbian. Yeah yeah, well, I'll tell you
what they meet that the old man brings outstanding.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
Well, I'm not surprised, man, I want to talk about
I'm looking forward to seeing Mitch Moses has really stepped
up to that top echelon now plays in the NRL
the way you can control the game, and I think
he's going to go really well there and be a
huge injection for the Blues team. But I feel a
little sorry for Nico and I was thinking about it
yesterday the Woodsane. I'd love to get your your thoughts
on this. Nick seems to be a manufactured seven to
(13:10):
play how Craig fits given wants to play with the Sharks,
and he really suits that role. And he's invented to
play for how the Sharks want to play at seven.
So when you put him into, say our rep team,
it doesn't necessarily work.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Yeah, I totally agree. He's not your usual organizer. And
the way that Sharks play, they tend to shift a lot.
They like to use their back five, and you see
a lot of the time he'll start from a standing
start and then doesn't play real direct because he wants
to get the ball out to his edges. And I
think that's what's probably heard him in Origin, especially being
a man down. You need to play direct in a
base where you need to be really vocal. Look, I
(13:44):
feel really sorry for him because the two times he's
got an opportunity. The first one he got put a center,
which he's never played before. And then you look at
game one. We play with twelve players for frigging seventy
two minutes of the game, and you know it's one
of those origins, a game where if you missed beat,
you miss origin, like if you missed the jump, you're
just not there. And you know he hasn't had the
(14:05):
greatest of opportunities. But like you said, it's sort of
his style doesn't probably suit the way that Madge wanted
to play. Yeah, you know, and you know we Madge
like that bash barge nice direct through the front door,
whereas Canala like to shift, like I said to you before,
use their back five, use their speed, a lot of angles,
(14:25):
you know what I mean. It just didn't suit the
way he played. So no doubt he had got a
lot of flak from Game one. He'll put a lot
of himself, but I reckon he'll come back bigger and
better because this one, you know, he wasn't going to
be there game one if Cleary and Motives will picked.
So he sort of knew that from the start, and
I feel sorry for him knowing that you're the third choice.
(14:45):
That's always the hardest part, is it while was first picked,
you know what I mean? So, well, he'll go back
and fifty's a great coach, like he's showing you how
good his boot canal in the last couple of years,
Fitzy will get the best out of him, and no
doubt he'll come back bigger and better at Big Niko.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
And he's been the original level, so it's not like,
you know, it's not just wishful thinking. He's going to
know exactly how to handle that situation to keep his
head up because we don't want to see his head
go down. He might have sut struggled a little bit
last year when that went down. I felt sorry for him.
But how do you handle that, Woodsie? Like if you
had some disappointment, if you get dropped from a repside
and there's a little bit of negativity around your name
(15:20):
and tops you off athletes, you can really block that out,
but you're also only human as well.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Yeah, you've got well, the biggest thing to me You've
got to get off social media because you're just going
to read comments you probably don't want to hear. You
could trigger little things. The first and foremot you just
got to go back to your club land. You've got
to be happy. You've got to have a smile on your face.
You don't want the young blokes or the senior players
to go, well, he's still got his head on, you know,
he's hard to talk to, or he's still worried about
what's going on. You need to go out there and
you need to show them that you're committed to the
(15:45):
group that you started the season with, and then you
need to just play good footing. The quicker your game
comes around, the better it is for you because you
can go out of there and just show everybody that
doesn't mean anything to you, and you can just play
the footy that you know that it's best suited to you.
And that's what Nicko needs to do. You know, you
got a disappointing loss to the Dolphins last Thursday night,
but he just needs to keep playing some good footy
(16:05):
and just keep turning it around, especially after getting obviously
the bad feedback from Morriagin that you got dropped now
to move on. Now, get the boys around your carnala
because they're the ones that you've worked hard with all
pre season and at the start of the year, and
they're the ones they're gonna lift you up.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
What's it like when you're down one nill in a series?
Is there a certain pressure and anxiety in the camp?
Speaker 2 (16:25):
Yeah, definitely. It's always there's a little bit more anxiety
when you go for a camp. You know you haven't
got that second opportunity now, you know you've already used
it up, so everything's still die now and every you know,
not that you get frustrated at when you're how I
say it, like when things don't go to plan of training,
But it's one of those things like you just got
to everything's got to be slick and that's the way
(16:47):
you want to prepare. So it can create a little
bit of you know, ANSI in your mind. But if
you overdo it, that's when you start worrying about it.
As a group. I reckon, we've got the group to
do it, you know, queens and have a more relaxed
camp because they'd had a win, so you know, I
could be on edy a little bit initial whales, but
they just need to handle themselves that they should be right.
(17:07):
I'm quite confident.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
In the late How important is that preparation You mentioned
how you can miss the start.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Yeah, there's times in games, but there the moments that
you've got to stay calm. You know, everything you trained
for could go out the window when you come into
the game risky. It's one of those things you can
try and compare the absolute best you want, but sometimes
you might tek the balls kickoff and the team scores
and like, wow, we didn't plan we wanted to have
a fast start. It's how you can regroup. It like
(17:33):
as you as you're seeing, you're seeing your players in
the group and they they're going to get the players
to flush that. Yeah, you know, things go against this.
That's part of the Rguy League. You can't plan for everything.
You know, not everything you can plan for, and it's
how you react to that situation. And you know, obviously
that was a tough one for us. In game one,
we're going up against twelve men. I started playing with
(17:54):
twelve men for seventy two minutes. That's probably something that
was definitely not in the back mind of everyone else.
But you've got to flush it. Because if you keep
worrying about that and dwelling it, it's going to be
a long night.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
We mentioned the social media side of things and the
you know, we're pulling out the doctor fil cahard again.
If anyone that judges someone else, they're really judging themselves.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Mate. We'll let you say people are talking about you
doing something.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Right exactly, and that's and that's that's the world we're
living today, mate, Great to talk to you. Very insightful mate.
I'll let you get back to those dumb bells, mate,
to get those guns looking nice and sharp.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
A big man, see you, Riskey,
