Speaker 1 (00:00):
Been touch and go there for a while. Of course,
I speak of the man Zach Hosking. We lost him
a few weeks ago, but it looks like there will
be some good news. Let's do a bit of a
check up. We see how the legend's going to use
Zach and neck how a mate, I'm good, mate, Hostcar
give us an update.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Mate.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
It was a bit a bit tricky there for a while,
but the good news is we can rehabit and he
might be back at some stage this year.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Yeah, so as it stands now, I'm going to be
back at the latest round twenty.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
It's actually the same game that Jamals.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Due back as well, So that'd be a good dave
if we can both stay on track and get back
to that game. But yeah, when it happened.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
It was.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
It was pretty yeah, like you said, touching go, Like
I saw the surgeon a few days after it happened,
and it was so much swelling and I fluid up
in the scan and the appoint. So he gave me
two weeks to go away and rehabit as best I
can in the two weeks, and when I come back

(01:07):
to same he would make the decision whether I can
rehabit and I avoid surgery, but if I needed surgery,
that would be it for the year. So sure enough,
went back and the work that I'd done with the
physios and the performance staff have been good enough to
show signs that I could rehabit and had a few

(01:28):
things on my side in my scan that that helped
me as well. So I'm just going to double check,
go back and saying rescan, I think that's next week
and then and then yeah, keep trucking on and aim
for that round twenty game.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Is it an injury you've done before, their hostco Was
it new to the body?

Speaker 2 (01:48):
No, this is this is very new to me.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Like I've I've said, you know when it happened, and
people have been asking me that I've never had an
injury that's put me out more than two or three weeks.
So been in rehab for twelve, thirteen, fourteen weeks at
this stage in my career is very new to me.
So it was it was pretty tough to sort of

(02:13):
accept it first because you know, at that stage as well,
I didn't know if I was going to be playing
again this year, So sort of when I got that
news and it sort of sunk in then I'll be
able to get back at the back end of the year.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
And yeah, it made it.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Easier to turn up and then smash the rehab out
and try it back as early as possible.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
OSCO. Just for the listeners, it's you mentioned it's a
hard pill to swallow considering you the situation was where
you came here joined Canbra started off really well, in
great form and without embarrassing it, you've probably been you know,
the form play out for the team, and the team's

(02:55):
been going really well and then all of a sudden
that happens. And you always take that reason. In a
contact sport like rugby league, when you cross that stripe,
anything could happen. You never know if you'll finish the game,
which could enduy season. What's what was what was the
first initial thoughts when when that goes down? And on
a listener perspective, as a professional athlete, what what does

(03:16):
one go through in that early stages emotionally too as
well as physical?

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, well, yeah, the mental the very good part for
it speaks for itself like it's it's obviously very sort
after that that night, the next day, you know, progressing
for the rehab stages, it is. It's very like sore
and painful, especially early on, but the mental because that
there was more the mental side of it that that

(03:45):
Yet it's probably harder to deal with, to be honest,
Like you know, we're we play Rguy League for living,
so we're in we're in pain a lot of the time.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
So that's that's not new to us.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
But yeah, having to deal with that sort of adversity
when especially when I have and had anything like this before,
it was tough. But you know, actually when when it
when it was dessiccated on the field and when they
put it back in, and because me being so unaware
of an injury like this, so I said, oh, my

(04:16):
right to keep playing, but m hmm. And then but
that was before like most the the pain sort of
kicked in properly. And because it's just blissfully unaware of.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Because you're still learn and you're still warm when you're
in that you're yeah, you're at war at the time.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yeah, I'm just unaware of like the damage that happens
when you know, you shoulder dislocates. So yeah, and sure enough,
not too long after that it was it started becoming
pretty painful and yeah, and then I just asked, I'll
just asked a thousand questions to medical staff about return

(04:57):
dates and what if this, what if this has happened,
and what if this happened? So I've actually learned a
lot about the human shoulder and the process for it.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
So that's something I can take out of it.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Something you could probably take in post grew as. Will
just don't be touching any remote controls. Poor twisted last
year and popped it back out again.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yeah that was Yeah, that was the story they quickly
told me straight after it. So won't you reaching behind
my head for averte, No, definitely may be doing that.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Just let other people grab things for you, please. But
as you mentioned that such a such a letdown and
such a disappoint disappointments the word because it's transparent when
it comes to football players, especially in our old players.
You talk about those long pre seasons and all you
want to do is play games. You just can't wait
to get run out there on the you know, in
the footy, and then all of a sudden that gets

(05:50):
taken away and you've got to got to be back
on the training path and do rehabit. That must be tough.
But as you mentioned you get into the flow and
in some strange way, time goes pretty quickly. The season
goes pretty quick, so before you know what, you'll be
out there again.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Absolutely, we and Jamal trailed up with the team the
Magic anim Well up there, I sort of realize that,
you know that the Sunday just Gone is five weeks
from when it happened, which is just crazy to think
that's been five weeks since it's happened, So you know,
probably almost halfway we might rehab process already, and it
really doesn't feel like.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
It's been that long. So I mean it's you know, as.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Bad as it is losing Jamal and how important he
is to our side, it's been I think it's good
for both of us that we have someone that's at
a very similar stage and they rehapp and we're progressing
through together very similar We both got an arm.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Injury, were both drew back at the same time, so.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
That's sort of been a thing that's been on outside
and probably has helped with the mental side of things,
having someone who's who's doing everything with you and progressing
through all the stages at the same time. So that's
been quite handy for both of us.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
I think, I think having a rehab, but it absolutely
Last week we spoke to Big Mau had Big malman
Inger on and obviously four broken arms, and he mentioned
I asked him Cheez to come back for four that
would have been so draining, But each time he came back,
it was just he just gained more and more power,
you know, because he was so hungry to get back.
But in those four times he had another guy and

(07:25):
as a blow called Brent Todd, who he had.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
He was a great player.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
He would have played in you know, I would have
played against him. He was at the Raiders at the
time and he broke his arm too, so it was
them too, you know, competing in the pool, competing in
the hill sprints and all that stuff. So good to
have a buddy there going for the same process. And
the fact that he's both been systematically scheduled to return
on the same day. That'd be even cool too if
he ran back out there together again.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, I'm probably pushing even for round eighteen,
but given that we have to buy in round nine,
and I think it might be a safer play for
myself and yeah, for the rest, for the rest of
the season to dis miss that one more game, which

(08:10):
would give me essentially another three weeks to recover.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
So, but who knows.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
If I'm at that stage and I'm ready to go,
I don't think Ricky will stop it from playing.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Absolutely. Can it be something that you can You can't
needle it, can you, because it's not It's not a
soft tissue injury. It's like a disc. It's a structural injury,
isn't it.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Yeah, it's just it's a structural thing. So the yeah,
I don't know. I don't think kneeling will sort of help.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Yeah, I mean, like pain pain wise, it will help,
but I shouldn't be in pain by the time I'm playing.
I should be back to I'm fully confident in everything
I can do with my shoulders. So that's a while
away yet. But that's the stage and need to get
to before they even let me play.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
And everyone's got niggles by that, you tell me you
anyway around twenty everyone's carrying something going into a game.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
I was carrying enough before it round bloody six, So
fatal season of the have a few more bumps of
bruises inland.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
That's why it's the greatest game of all husk Sometimes
what do we do this eight?

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Yeah, exactly, yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
Mate, sitting back there and watching the boys the last fortnight,
the last two games outstanding. Right, you've come from and
I hate doing it, but it's good to measure where
you've come from. Successful unit, you know that's won three premierships.
To see the spirit in this team. And the thing
is too, a lot of people have been writing us
off since you know, we've we've got bounced against the Sharks.

(09:44):
But now it's seeing that they're you know, they've only
lost one game and they're flying on top of the table.
So they bounced us that afternoon. That was when you know,
we lost a couple and then all of a sudden,
look at the character the boys have shown. The first
game coming back from you Handley down twenty points to
Neil No One goes to Brookville on a Friday night
and out plays Darry DC. We come back, show the

(10:08):
fight to come back, and then last week to have
the Bulldogs are a good football type team this week
this year, sorry dogs a good team this year. You know,
you play with a couple of those big players, you know,
your kick hours and your off you know, your Crichton's
and all those guys, and to come back from you know,
eleven men down to show that kind of fight. Gee,

(10:31):
Wizy must be pleased with who you've signed for.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
Absolutely, And you know, those those doubters and stuff were
there at the start of the preseason when saying you know,
I think I think a lot of people were tipping
the Raiders to get the spoons. So I think after
round one people sort of and we beat the Knights
up there and then come back and had a good

(10:55):
winning at the Tigs at the home, people started to
shut up and then they're probably looking for us to love.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Is like that?

Speaker 3 (11:00):
So against like that that Carnala game. So but like
you said, like there's some serious amount of character being
shown in the last few games, like the very young
halves pairing and experienced hards pairing, and those two stood
up tremendously. I thought Tao in his last two games

(11:21):
particularly have been he's been outstanding along with Stranger. He's
really stood up when since Jamal has been out. So
and that's not just send too, like the Fords continue
to do what they do. I feel like our bench
has really impacted the game when coming.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
On especially against me only like it was a tough sort.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Of opening period and they come in and really changing
the game in the previous two games, so no one
could be really faulted the Maine and and Sticky has
been really good to be around. He's a been a
real driving force on the attitude and I think that
that Carnally game at home was a bit of a
for change here and it's shown in the performances lately.

(12:05):
It is.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
And you mentioned Elliott like big smells come back and
he's had his knockers as well, and he's come back
and he's been outstanding. He's created two back to back
performances a skipper, you know, the way he handled kick
out on that edge last week, just totally scored the
big fella and just played so well. And then obviously
the manly game and the great thing about it is

(12:27):
and you know he said and you know, at a
disappointing first half, but he just showed character and to
lead by his actions in the second half against the
Eagles to do which not many people can do down there,
to do that, and then obviously he's handled the Bulldogs
and then that puts you in great stead and great
confidence to come back home, which will be a packed
crowd and packed tin out there at Joeyo on a

(12:48):
Saturday afternoon against Roosters who are also coming off a loss.
But they are a good team as well, and it's
a you know, it's a top eight clash, a finals
kind of vibele already.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Yeah, well, this week's going to be a great test
to see where we're at.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Not that you can't fault the dog's efforts.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
They've done, they've played out this year and mainly mainly
have started the season really well as well.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
So two quality opposition, two teams in the top eight,
that's what we're forgetting. And we've we've had to show
character to come from behind in both of those games,
and that tenacity on the field and the university on
the field. You know, in a different era, in a
different club might have just packed up and could have
gone beaten by forty. You know, both of those signs.
We've got the two points. It's six point fortnite, you know.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Yeah, yeah, and that's and that's.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
Probably another Having the buyer time like that was really
good and the timing and Jamal are out. There's actually
another two buyers so in the twelve weeks or thirty
weeks that we're out, there's there's three buyers in that so.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
Yeah, well well.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
Yeah, well that's just that's worked in mine and Jamal's
favor that there's three games that we're not missing out
on as well.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
Yeah, it's going to be more proud of how the
boys have played the last few weeks.

Speaker 1 (14:18):
Talk to me about Taps, mate, He probably he goes
onto two hundred games this week. One of our leaders,
very humble guy does does his talking on the field.
I mean he talks by his actions. What I'm trying
to say, how have you felt playing under the guidance
and the leadership of Big Taps. I mean you would
have had to you know, obviously, but he'd be on

(14:39):
your tip sheet when you play against him in the past.
But now running out going to battle with Taps, what's
it like?

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (14:46):
Absolutely, he said. I've been on the other side of
the field from him. He's up, He's right at the
top of that tip sheet. He's very very powerful, big
big man the verse, and I'm very happy that I'm
on his side now and not having to collect that
hip to the side of the head, you know. So yeah,

(15:08):
that in that time that Smells was out at the
start of the season, he's obviously stepped up to be
the captain, and I thought he did a tremendous job.
He's very very direct and a very good guy to
follow out because like you said, he leads by his actions,
and for him to come up with two hundred games
already is quite remarkable for someone also someone who also

(15:35):
his career started at Newcastle, much like a lot of
us here at the Raiders, the straight Dogs we call ourselves.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
So yeah, very.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
Proud of him, and I'm actually spieling that I won't
be able to be out there with him for his
two hundredths.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Speaking of our Newcastle, we noticed on the telly that
you had a couple of now adopted Novocastrians that were
Raiders boys. I speak of the great Brett Mullins and
the great Heather Heatherington of course, part of the part
of the ninety four reunion there. What was it like
seeing How surreal is that like when you walk into
a room and you've got malmon Inger there, Lourie Daily,

(16:13):
Bradley Clyde, Brett Mullin, Steve Walters, ruben WICKI, Jason Croker,
David Ferner, you know, Paul Osbourne. You've got these Kenny Nagats,
You've got these absolute superstars that you have been around
the club and then you've got to go and hang
out with them. Obviously you'd have a connection there with
heather On Mulows from Newcastle, but they live down there

(16:34):
and whatnot. But what was that like, that whole experience
partying with them and just having those chats with them.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
Yeah, well actually made the game almost feel like a
finals game, like a like a prelim or son the
way that and yeah, and just how much it mattered
and the build up to it. There was one thing
that the Raiders do so well is appreciate the history
and the players that have come before us, and we celebrate.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Them without the women knowing.

Speaker 3 (17:06):
Every week there's a new theme it's in pre season
about an old player or something like that. And for
this ninety four fan filal tain to be up there
and to win like that, you know, in the in
the way that we've already spoken about, they were so
wrapped and it was good to have them down the
sheds and you know, there's a very star started lineup.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
It was a very stacked team back then. I'm glad
they are. I'm glad they're all retired now we're not
versing them so.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
But yeah, like Heather and Marlows, I've known for a
long time a good mates with their boys up there
in Newcastle, and the old men actually used to drink
with them at the hotel that Heather and Marlows aren't
up there, so as many times I had to go
and pick him up and drive him home. So I've
seen some funny sides of those two blokes.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
You actually spoke to Heather Head on the show next
week and he's telling me some great stories about on
the field with your old man in that era. But yeah,
it was crazy.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
He said, he's the only bloke that I side step.
So that's not a good rap.

Speaker 1 (18:12):
To have, rap to have mate. Also to seeing that
all unfold where it would have been, it would been
a great thing to see get the chocolates on such
a big event because I think everyone was nervous as well.
They wanted to get that wind to make it a
nice a nice tripping. And I said now on the
show last week, as if we get the win and
Ricky's going to be in great spirits, it's going to

(18:33):
be a great weekend and it was.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
Yeah, it certainly was. Certainly it was a great night.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
All right mate, I'll let you be. I'll let you
get nice and ready for supporting the boys on the weekend.
And you stay safe, mate, and we'll talk to you soon.
Cheers for having mate, soe your mate,
