What happens when a simple but effective low-budget film outsmarts most major studio releases? You get Strange Darling.
On this week’s free episode, we take a look at JT Mollner’s 2023 cat-and-mouse thriller (with a twist). Starring Kyle Gallner and featuring first-time cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi (yes, that one), this told-out-of-sequence film provokes equal parts jokes and genuine film discussion. The fact that it’s actually shot on film allows us to nerd out for a bit, which is always fun.
We dive into whether non-linear storytelling is cinematic genius or a fancy way to cheat, how Ribisi’s camera work adds intrigue, and why otherwise-intelligent characters make some dumb mistakes in this fast-paced film. Also, we say some things that are probably illegal in at least four states.
Strange Darling is a 2023 thriller written and directed by JT Mollner and starring Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner, Ed Begley Jr, and Barbara Hershey.
