Raising joyful children
in an angry world, a podcast
dedicated to faithful parentsnavigating their families
through a stormy culture
So there are some seriousquestions being asked these days
regarding artificialintelligence and the education
of children.
This is raising joyful childrenin an angry world.
I'm your host, Paul Osborne, last month, a gentleman by the
(00:21):
name of Matt Barnum and a personnamed Deepa Sitha Ram, and I
believe.
Wrote an article suggesting yourkids are probably cheating in
high school.
And it was a pretty good piece.
Really.
The headline didn't really giveit away.
Uh, they interviewed high schooleducators.
They said some kids that were inhigh school and really tried to
take a deep dive into how, uh,AI is becoming rooted into the
(00:46):
American education system.
And the argument always is likesome of the teachers are
concerned, Hey, you're usingthis to write the paper, to do
the homework.
And of course the defense by thestudents always like, no, I, I
used that to edit my work.
I used that to do the research.
I.
And of course you're in asociety now with very little
(01:09):
understanding of plagiarism and,and how this all works.
And so, uh, this argument's verydifficult to resolve.
And, and what the teachers arereally concerned about and the
educators is that if you come inas a freshman on a campus and
artificial intelligence does waytoo much of your work, the
(01:31):
child's actually cheatingthemselves.
They're going to not be adifferent person.
They're not gonna be better atcritical thinking.
They're not gonna have a widerview of life.
They're not gonna understand howto study and do this kind of
work, and they will be the sameperson they were when they
walked through the door whenthey were a freshman.
I think that's a veryinteresting way of seeing it.
(01:53):
You don't break the laws of God,you break yourself.
It's kind of falls into one ofthose.
And so how our kids are gonnaknow what the difference between
using this tool correctly andusing it to steal other people's
work and putting your name onthe work you didn't do.
And that's gonna get sticky inartificial intelligence.
(02:14):
So I think it's very importantthat we take a look at these so
that our kids aren't gettingcaught up in plagiarism.
Uh, one of the other things thatyou have to be considered about
is if this stuff becomes sort ofthe go-to place of knowledge, I.
Then does that become kind ofthe king of wisdom and does that
(02:38):
king supplant the King ofChrist, does that king begin to
supplant our view that KingJesus is the author of life and
of all wisdom.
It can become very easy.
I mean, we, we, we have a littletrivia argument about which team
won, you know, what championshipin some year, and we're having a
(02:58):
discussion around it.
First thing we do is we pull outour phone and we go, oh, no.
Here it is.
And, and, and so these things, while they seem innocent, they
begin to, I, I think, start toput together sort of a, a way in
which we now see that, uh,artificial intelligence as the
source of all information, thesource of all wisdom.
(03:19):
And it's not, I can tell you, and, and some of the times I
have used it, you get intoasking questions about God and
it doesn't have any answers.
In fact, it will, it will almosttake God out of it.
So I think there's three thingsthat families have to do first
and foremost.
Um, you really have to get yourkids to have this understanding
(03:41):
that our faith is built on theunderstanding that Jesus Christ
is the king of this universe.
He spoke it into being, and heis the king of all.
And you have to understand thatfrom before people even were
here.
The devil began to battleagainst that kingship.
He did not want Jesus to beking, and he and his rebellious
(04:04):
angels, of course, were thrownout of heaven as a result of it.
He then deceived humanity bytelling him, oh, you can be like
God.
You can be your own king.
And this battle just goes on andon in which humanity and those
that are.
Influenced by the prince of thisworld are trying to take down
(04:25):
your trust in the Christian, inChristian understanding that
Christ is king.
And so you've really gotta getthat, uh, understanding down.
We just went through or we'regoing through the trial of
Christ as we're going throughholy, you know, this, this holy
season and getting ready forEaster.
And of course, what do the Jewssay when Pilot says.
(04:47):
Uh, he's your king, king of theJews.
Oh, no, we don't have a, we onlyhave King Caesar.
The denial of Christ as king hasbeen going on from the beginning
of time and before time.
So make sure you have that storycorrect.
And then I believe wise familiesneed to be literate families.
(05:07):
One of the best things I saw inthis as I was reading through
various opinions.
Was the I was was the concept orthe observation?
I guess I should say, that thesociety is becoming more and
more iconographic.
In other words, it looks atpictures.
We call'em videos, but it'spictures and it also is becoming
(05:29):
very audible and it's becomingless and less literate.
That's why we're seeing.
Uh, literacy skills and readinglevels, including lower and
lower over the last 40 years asaudio visual aids have gone and
grown and grown.
Um, I wanna, I wanna suggest toyou that this is something that
(05:49):
you're gonna have to make a, achoice on.
And you know, one of my favoritemental fitness experts who
passed away a few years ago as agentleman by the name of Trevor
Moad, his resume is veryimpressive.
N-B-A-N-F-L teams, includingNick Saban's, Alabama team, and
he coins this phrase aftertalking to Vince Carter called
(06:11):
the illusion of choice.
And the illusion of choice foran athlete is to believe that
you can continue living acertain lifestyle, doing certain
things and think that you'regonna keep playing.
And, and Carter said no.
What I learned to do to extendmy career was things like, I can
do a layup.
I don't need to do a slam dunk.
That's one less pounding on myknee.
(06:32):
I'm not gonna slam it unlessit's necessary.
And there were a bunch of otherlifestyle choices and he was
trying to make the point that.
He didn't have a choice that thechoice is an illusion.
These are things you must do,and I think this is pretty
applicable.
If your family is gonna beliterary.
You need to get the idea thatthe whys in this world and for
(06:56):
your kids to have great thinkingskills, they're going to have to
be skilled in literature and inreading.
And it's an illusion that kidswill become wise while spending
excessive time in activitiesthat do not produce wisdom and
do not take the brain to thebrain.
(07:19):
Gym.
Uh, reading is, is thegymnasium.
It is where our brains and ourthinking skills are
strengthened, and when we don'tdo it, they, those skills begin
to atrophy, just like not.
You know, not lifting weights ata gym, and I believe family is
gonna have to take some time,um, in, in either becoming a
(07:41):
book club within your kids, uh,spending some time reading some
Bible verses, maybe suggesting,Hey, this year or the next six
months, we're gonna read throughthe gospel of Matthew or the
Gospel of John.
You might only read one verse.
Uh, you know, and you might onlydo it once a week, but you gotta
get this literature and thesense of reading and reading the
(08:03):
scriptures and then reading somebooks that help you understand
the scripture, uh, as part ofyour family part as your family,
raising of your kids, I guess isthe best way to say it.
I, I would never suggest thatYoui become some sort of new
version of the Amish, where wethrow out our phones and smash
our computers or something.
(08:25):
But you're going to need tolayer some of these old stories,
some of these old PilgrimsProgress and some of those kinds
of books that have been aroundfor a very long time.
I think Trevor and Noad wouldtell us, this means we're gonna
have to say no to some things inorder to say yes to wisdom.
I.
Jesus As I've told this story, and, and this is kind of our
(08:46):
launch story of True North aboutbuilding your house or your life
on the rock, that which is trueis what we can trust.
I.
And that which is sand is thatwhich is false.
And if you build, you know, onwhat is untrustworthy, the, the,
the life collapses, it fallshard.
And so it has to begin with whatis the rock that we're building
(09:08):
on.
The rock is Peter's confession, that Jesus is the Christ, the
anointed one.
That's the king.
Gotta get that story in.
I think the world that our kidsare facing is exciting.
I think there's a lot ofadvancements that are gonna be
very beneficial to them.
And I think the victor goes, thespoils will be, will be the same
(09:30):
as it always has been, and thatVictor will be the one that
chose wisdom.
The ultimate battle for theheart and soul is a fight for
identity.
Our king invites our kids toknow who they are, what to
believe, and where they belong.
Until next time, let's rememberthe words for theirs is the
(09:53):
Kingdom of Heaven.
