The early church grew rapidly because something about their new community was absolutely irresistible. This week we will look at what was so compelling about their way of life, and we'll discover the practices that empowered these first followers of Jesus to radically value people over possessions.

To follow Jesus is to take the red letters of His teaching to heart and put them into practice. A key theme of Jesus' teaching is mercy - helping people in time of need, and forgiving people who have wronged us.

The third temptation of Jesus in the wilderness was a draw to the wealth and glory of this world. Jesus resisted the temptation by a focus on the glory of God and the betterment of others.

In the second temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, He is offered the kind of glory and power often associated with the promise of a savior, but He refuses. Instead, Jesus chooses the call of God to save the world through humble service from the heart of love. God continues to save the world through our humble service led by the Spirit of Christ in us.

This past week at Rancho, we explored where true happiness is found—not in controlling circumstances, but in surrendering to God. Looking at scripture and Jesus’ example in the wilderness, we were reminded that real fulfillment comes through serving others, living with humility, and hungering for righteousness. Together, we celebrated the joy that comes when we trust God’s ways and walk in His love.

The temptation of Jesus in the wilderness was a dark attack on the light of human flourishing, luring Jesus away from God's vision of happiness, peace, and contentment. We walk with Jesus through the darkness of the wilderness and emerge in "His great light".

Practicing the way of Jesus could feel like work if we think these are habits meant to serve God, or please God, or be blessed by God. But what if these practices are gifts from God so we can enjoy Him and rest in Him? That changes everything.

It is said that America is suffering an epidemic of loneliness, yet we are created to live in community; in interdependent groups of people who support and encourage each other in every high and low life brings our way. Community doesn’t mean we agree on everything, but we do agree that love for each other as Christ loves us is the most important thing in life.
