(00:03):
It's time to raise the roof for our latest regular season
episode. Welcome back everyone, to the
podcast. I'm your host, Alex Murphy.
And on today's podcast, we have a little bit of an interesting
one because it'll be similar to the podcast that we did when we
were down in Tampa and also in Baltimore, where we compiled a
bunch of interviews. Because guess what?

(00:23):
In this interview, there's a bunch of interviews that we
compiled and those interviews are interviews from, you know,
actually interviews that we had leftover from that series back
in June between the Raisin Tigers from Sunday.
We also have interviews that areexisting post game press

(00:44):
conferences and and other stuff in the clubhouse from Sunday
from Sunday's series finale against the Orioles.
So again back in June, July now with the Orioles in this in this
past series that the Rays had where they won two out of three
against the Orioles, a much different result than what
happened this week. Or to start the week out against

(01:07):
the Chicago White Sox, which I'll get into in just a second.
And then lucky. Luckily enough, we were able to
finally head down to Durham to go check out a Durham Bulls
game. My goodness, what an atmosphere,
what a crowd, what a stadium, great hospitality from the team.
I mean, the place is absolutely incredible and we got interviews

(01:28):
with a bunch of different guys alongside getting a post game
interview with manager Morgan Ensberg post game of which I was
able to ask him some questions about some guys that are either
making their way through the rehab stints or guys that were
just optioned back down to Durham from the big league
roster. Talked with him about that.

(01:49):
But more importantly, we have interviews with Ray's top
prospects, Trey Morgan and Carson Williams, the number one
prospect in the race system. I was also able to talk with
Tristan Peters, another raised prospect who's had a really,
really good season in Durham this year.
And then on top of that, I talked with both Johnny DeLuca
and Richie Palacios, who are making their Major League rehab

(02:11):
or injury rehab right now in Durham.
Richie had just restarted his onTuesday.
Johnny had been down in Durham for a little bit.
And then I also talked with Ben Rortvet, former Rays catcher
from last season. Was there a little bit of this
year but struggled, ended up getting sent back down to the
minors. So got a lot of interesting
perspectives from guys that are young guys that are trying to

(02:33):
make their way through the system and then guys that are
either trying to make their way back onto the big league roster
or trying to get healthy to contribute back to the big
league team. So a lot of really interesting
interviews there. Again, big shout out and big
thanks to Sierra and the Durham Bulls for all of the hospitality
that they provided us and the access they provided us

(02:56):
throughout our time there earlier this week going into
what happened on the field, not over the weekend against the
Orioles, but what happened specifically against the White
Sox. It's and we're going to be
talking about this later in a inan in an upcoming episode.

(03:16):
But that performance was inexcusable if the Rays, and I
know that general manager Eric Neander said if this team is
going to be one that buys the deadline, they're going to need
to win out of the break. And as of this recording, as of
today's recording, Tuesday, July24th, there is a week left until

(03:38):
the trade deadline. So it's it's make or break time
for the Rays right now. And to lose 2 out of 3 against a
Chicago White Sox team that camein with 35 wins this year.
They have a combined now with yesterday's when they have a
combined 78 wins since the startof the 2024 season, which is two

(04:00):
wins less than the Rays had all of last season.
Which just shows you how bad that they've been.
The fact that the Rays have lostseries against the White Sox in
2024 and 2025, notably a a series sweep or getting swept by
the Red Sox or White Sox in 2024, then everything that

(04:21):
happened this week in Tampa, it's inexcusable.
If the Rays want to be a team that is going to compete for a
playoff spot, they cannot affordto do something like this.
That's that's it's absolutely horrible, especially with how
Wednesday night's game went. The Rays were up 75 going into
the 8th inning and the Rays decide to bring in reliever

(04:43):
Kevin Kelly who then blows blowsup Kevin.
Manager Kevin Cash does not get anything going in the bullpen
basically until Kelly. You know the floodgates had
already opened. He had he'd given up 3-4 runs at
that point and blown the league lead.
A6 run score in that inning for the White Sox.

(05:03):
Rays mount somewhat of a comeback in the bottom half of
the inning to make it 11/9. Some questionable umpiring calls
certainly did not help the cause.
But again, if you're expecting to win, especially if you score
nine runs in a baseball game, togive up 11 runs to a White Sox
team that coming in had 35 wins this season in more than 100

(05:23):
games played is flat out inexcusable.
The Rays are only three games above 500 right now.
They are going into an incredibly tough Rd. stretch,
playing three games on the road against the Cincinnati Reds and
then four games in the Bronx against the Yankees.

(05:44):
This was a homestand where you had to go 5 and 1 knowing what
was coming up, and the Rays did not do that.
So we will talk about that in a later episode, hopefully an
episode that will go out over the weekend.
We're hoping to have a special guest on that episode as well as
us, so stay tuned for that. But As for this episode, do not
think about everything that's been going on with the Rays.

(06:06):
Try not to think about that. Enjoy the interviews, especially
the interviews that I was able to get in Durham.
And I mean, absolutely incredible access, like I said
before. And the ability to talk with so
many guys that are either going to make an impact or have
already made an impact and hopefully will make more impacts
on the big league rosters is really, really cool.

(06:28):
Durham is a stacked, stacked roster of talent, which is the
reason why that they're one of the best teams in the
International League right now and one of the best teams in
minor League Baseball. So it's not shocking at all.
But do enjoy those. We're going to go into a quick
break before we go into those. We're going to run our C Geek

Thanks so much to SeatGeek for sponsoring us, and let's get
back to this latest episode of Raise the Roof.
Letelle and just, I mean early action, just what did you like
and see from him today? Oh, I liked everything he did.
He threw the ball really, reallywell.
He's efficient and limited, likewe've continued to say and

(08:17):
compliment a very good offense that kind of broke out on us
there in that last inning at play.
But lit gave us every opportunity, did a really nice
job and. Just what can you say also about
junior back-to-back days have home runs just he continues.
I guess to make a push for that All Star or not.
Yeah, I would say he does look special.
You know, special player doing special things right now, seeing

(08:39):
the ball well, driving it. I mean, it's he's putting
together a really impressive first half for any player,
regardless of his age. What was the thought with hotel
after 5 and 69? Just given the, you know, the
off day, the match up, then turning the line up back over
with, you know, Carpenter and Green, those guys are really
good. I mean, I thought Lit gave us

(09:01):
every opportunity and felt like with where our bullpen was that
we could try to, you know, shorten the game a little bit.
I thought Club threw the ball really, really well.
Perez, he gave us a bunch of good at bats over the course of
three games and got a hold of one there at the end.
Offensively, it seems like you did have some hard hit balls,
but a lot of them kind of right at guys.
Yeah, there were some atom ballsin there, but Mize is tough, you

(09:23):
know, I had a good fastball, good split.
Do that sweeper slurve pitch that it was tough for us to stay
on a lot of separation and then you know, for the most part
their bullpen came in and did a good job as well.
What did you see from Whitley inthe ninth?
Kind of a tough spot with the rain coming down the way it.
Was yeah, I know. We thought we all thought that
it was going to pass pretty quick and it kind of lingered

(09:44):
around a little bit longer. Not ideal, but that happens.
You know, they got on as cutter pretty quick and then, you know,
found some, some hits that weren't so hard early and then
they started to, you know, really find the barrel to to the
cutter later in his outing. And get.
Yeah. And I'd like, like to Yeah, I,

(10:05):
I'm trust that we will. We've played good baseball and
look forward to the off day and then, you know, we'll travel to
Kansas City. What the decision to go to stick
with CLEV at that point? I think you had you set up at
one point, just kind of what wasthat thought process?
Trying to get you set it to the top of the lineup.
They had hit for they, they hit for Carpenter.
So we had, you know, really wanta cleft to face Perez.

(10:27):
I know it didn't work out. Keep him turned around.
But as soon as you said it was going to get going and if there
was traffic with Dingler coming up, then potentially go there
and try to piece together the rest of that ending in the 8th
with him. Yeah.
And. Then you've seen enough of Riley
Green this weekend. Yeah, he's a really good player.
I mean, he has had, I mean, he'smade some nice plays in the

(10:49):
outfield and his bats, just a special hitter and it feels like
he has a lot of success against us.
And it seems like you had a gamelike this earlier this homestead
where you hit the ball hard. You just, you didn't maybe get
the breaks you're getting beforethe double play ball.
Yeah, I mean, it was. Had one.
Yeah, really tight game. Both teams battled really well.

(11:12):
Then I obviously got separated there at the end.
But I'm very pleased with overall how we're swinging the
bat, how we're pitching, how we're doing a lot of things.
What? Did you like about?
Your performance happen. Yeah, I thought that was
probably the best execution of the season.
Really got going like all my shapes.
It was really good getting aheadof guys did a good job.
Extra in two strikes, so definitely happy with that one.

(11:34):
Kind of felt like the culmination, all the stuff that
I've kind of trying to improve or trying to be we're trying to
improve on kind of came togethertoday.
So we definitely want to build on that one.
Talking a. Little bit about just what you
want to. If you want, can you go on to a
little bit more of the specifics?
Of what you're seeing and what you're noticing, what you want
to see come together. Yeah, I just execute a little
bit more off the plate. You know, I feel like I'm

(11:55):
throwing a lot of balls over theplate, especially in Hitters
Challenge, as well as being in two strike counts where we want
to make those guys follow us outof the zone.
And that's kind of what we've been chasing this last bit.
So it's been good prize. To come out.
Yeah, I was surprised, but with the author tomorrow and the pan
being fresh like they were, I understand.

(12:16):
You know, that's why we're that's the way the team's built.
So I'm not going to lie if I sayI wasn't frustrated and cash and
all of that. He knows that we want to be out
there. So but at the end of the day,
this is the way that the team built and that's going to give
us the best chance to win. I think you know the bulk of the
time that's going to pay off today obviously again, let.
Me see, I think 15's playing. Yeah, I think just from an

(12:40):
execution standpoint, shapes were really good today.
Had really good feel right away, which is really nice to to see.
And yeah, anytime you're gettingthat many whiffs, obviously the
best possible outcome. And I I was happy with it.
Probably did a good job of mixing up filling out the zone
in the first thing. Second inning not so much I can

(13:03):
have a lead off walk there and then I didn't execute to Perez
and kind of paid the price for it.
O2 hitch you trying to go above the zone there?
Yeah. I mean O2 we never want to throw
anything too close to the zone. You got to expand a little bit
and I just didn't get it up highenough.
Did you were you like when did you know you were going to go to
the state for the second inning? And he had obviously a set of

(13:25):
one up for a minute first. He just, when I came in off the
first, he just said stay locked in.
And, you know, it's kind of our job.
Stay locked in and then be readyto go until they tell you
otherwise. I mean, you did 2 I think last
time out. We've had that much recently.
Is that in a different approach or since you didn't know until
you finished the first? It doesn't change it?
No, it doesn't really change anything.
Yeah. Just stay locked in, continue to

(13:46):
do your job, go out there and fill it up until until they tell
you otherwise. You know, walk probably.
That's frustrating. Yeah, definitely.
You never want to, you know, lead off the inning putting guys
on base. So yeah, I got to got to try and
limit the walk. So you guys have been on this
great run here. You know, it always seems to
lose the last game for an off day.
But if they've felt pretty, pretty good vibe going forward

(14:06):
to doing. Yeah.
I mean, we're playing really good, really good baseball right
now. Yeah.
It would have been nice to get asweep, but you kind of have to
lean on what we've done and playing some really good ball
and and just keep it going. Thanks, guys.
What did you see on that iPad and what?
Did how are you feeling and whatwent well and forth into that?

(14:36):
I feel good, you know, I've beenworking very hard and like it
was, I feel good at home plate. You know, I was able to hit a
home run yesterday and today, but today we were we weren't
able to get the victory. You guys weren't able to get the

(15:06):
victory. Just the positives of what
you're seeing from this group right now and how you guys are
playing baseball right now at this moment.
We're playing very good right now.
You know, it's unfortunate that we didn't win.
It's part of baseball, you know, things happen, but we just have

(15:26):
to continue to play well the same way we've been playing for
the past month, month and a half, you know, and good things
are going to continue to happen.Do.
You know, you told us in spring training you set some high goals
for yourself. You've got 19 homers and 50
RBIs. We're not even at the halfway
point yet. How do you feel you've done to?
This point and looking forward. Where you could.

(15:48):
End up being being they've been training.

(16:09):
Very good. You know, I felt really
confident during spring while wewere in spring training.
That's why I said what I said, you know, and, but it's a, it's
a matter of continue working on the adjustments that we have to
make. We are working as a team.
The team is playing good, you know, and good things are going
to continue to happen. Yeah, I think I was just trying

(16:33):
to get the cutter to the inner half on the lefties and it was
just kind of creeping over the plate.
You know, whether that was grip the mound, whatever, it doesn't
matter. It just, you know, wasn't
executed. So kind of like I said, just go
back to the drawing board, correct that and move on.
As good as you've been feeling since you got here, it may be
easy to brush this one aside. Or have you, you know, it's just
it's one of those things where you can't look too into the bad

(16:53):
ones, especially one like that. And you know, Detroit's an
amazing lineup. They're one of the best teams in
baseball, not the best team in baseball.
So just kind of got a tip of capand move on.
Just try to act like it's not there, which is tough to do,
especially considering the size of the raindrops that were

(17:16):
falling on my head and. The way that the.
Mound was getting and some of the balls that I was getting,
but again. It's.
It's not an excuse. I'm a professional.
I got to go. Out there and do my job
regardless I. Understand that we're just
looking at they're going, why are they still playing.
So yeah, yeah, it was it was pretty tough.
Thank you. Good about the way that rally

(17:38):
was going and getting Junior to the plate up three O in that
situation. Yeah, definitely felt really
good. Good at bats against a pretty
elite back end reliever that probably wasn't as sharp as
today, but we didn't help him out, do many favors and probably
have the right guys coming to the plate.
He just made some big pitches when he fell behind right there
at the end of Junior What? Did you see from Pepeo?
It seemed like the lead off homeruns kind of hurt him the most
there. Yeah, I I thought Pat threw the

(17:59):
ball really well. He filled up the strike zone,
had good stuff. We've talked about this lineup
is Baltimore lineup. They can hit and they capitalize
on a couple pitches that you know, some solo homers for sure.
And then the big double that came I think in the 4th inning
it was. But overall, I thought Pep threw
the ball better than his stat line.

(18:20):
Just as far as your guys againstRogers and then the rest of
their bullpen, just not a chanceto get a lot going.
I felt like we had better bats than what we showed.
The maybe what the results were off Rogers, you know, drove a
couple balls deep. They've ran underneath them, hit
some balls hard at some guys. But Rodgers has been on a really
good run and got him, you know, did a good job of kind of

(18:41):
navigating through the game. Pepio tends to kind of beat
himself up after games when he comes out on the wrong side, but
it sounds like from what you're saying he shouldn't.
Yeah, I told him when he came out.
I was like, look, man, I I know he's frustrated.
He's, that's the competitor in him, but I, I really felt like
he threw the ball a lot better than what the results were.
And that happens sometimes. Hopefully he can or how

(19:02):
hopefully he agrees. And if he doesn't, I know he'll
get to work and do what he thinks he needs to do to get
himself back in in the directionhe wants.
Your guys's longest rain delay by a long shot this season.
I know it ended in a loss, but how impressed were you with the
guys to maintain momentum despite sitting and waiting and
waiting that whole time? Yeah, look, expect we, we've

(19:24):
been through rain delays plenty in different ballparks would
expect the guys to be able to shut down there for whatever it
was hour, hour and a half and then bring it back up and and
have some good at bats at the end.
It look good. Yeah, look good.
Change speeds. Demanded the ball where he
wanted to throw it. Got some swing and miss.

(19:45):
Got some soft contact. Did a nice job.
He slipped, He slipped, but nothing is spiked.
Just back of the spike slipped out.
Like you pitched probably betterthan the the final line, but
indicated how did you feel? What is what you went about it
today? You know, usually we say so the
shots don't kill you, but you know, three of them and then two
more runs in the in the third, you know, lead off Homer.

(20:09):
I made a good bitch. He put a good swing on it.
The other two homers get behind the count.
Had to work myself back. Jackson, six straight fastballs
and he had one, and then O'harena fouled off about three
straight heaters in a row in thesame exact spot and felt like
change. It was a good play and you know,
got him out on it 7 times already in the span of the three
games I've played against them. You know the other ones.

(20:31):
Couple balls, drop in the walk. Sucks because slip on one pitch
you don't even necessarily get to, you know, it could end up
walking still anyway, but you don't even necessarily get to
throw a competitive throw. But.
And I'm fine, but, you know, overall frustrating with the end
line of it, you know, filled up the zone through a lot of
strikes getting ahead of most people.

(20:52):
But you know, one of those days, like you always, you always kind
of put it on yourself when it doesn't work out there.
It's kind of your nature. Yeah.
You know, I'm, I'm hard on myself.
I'm probably too hard. A lot of people tell me I'm too
hard on myself, but, you know, Ihave to care about everybody in
this room and I want to win every single time I take the
mound and give the team a chanceto win.

(21:13):
And, you know, got to go through.
Made through 6, you know, dicey third, but, you know, made it
out of there. And then three mornings of one
run. I mean, did my best to give us a
chance after I already put us ina big hole.
But yeah, you know what's on me,You know, give up five runs and
offense comes back and puts up 3and, you know, just just sucks.

(21:34):
You know, you've we've joked about, you've had all the day
games, but how that was like thehottest game in race history,
apparently. I mean, how it was, it was hot.
It was hot. You know, we do joke about me
having a lot of the day games, but you know, it doesn't matter.
It's still, there's no excuse togo out there and go pitch and,
you know, maybe takes a little bit out of you.
And I drink a lot more fluids. I don't normally do, you know, I

(21:55):
sit in a tunnel. I have my air conditioned unit.
I have everything I can do to prepare myself to be able to go
back out there if there's a longinning and move around, you
know, yeah, it beats the crap out of you when you're out there
and the next day you feel it. But, you know, just to try to
get to go out there and pitch and execute pitches and give us
a chance to win. How draining was that third
inning at the Q, 322 or 24? So you got one out and 3:30

(22:17):
something for the inning. Yeah, it was, it was a long 1.
And I was just trying to get, you know, you get solo shot and
then you walk a guy and all I'm trying to do is get a double
play ball and Westbrook gets a bloop single that bloops in the
center. And then Henderson comes up and
follows a couple of really good change UPS off and, you know,
try to beat them with doors up at the top and, you know, gets

(22:37):
on top of it and so on. And then after that, it's just
like, OK, Ryan, you already did this to yourself.
How can you minimize? And you know, when you get guys
on base early with no outs, you're not, you're trying to get
out of it with unscathed, but most time you're not.
You're just trying to minimize the damage to the least minimal
what you can do. And I clearly didn't do that
today, but I wasn't necessarily going out there trying to strike

(22:57):
out everybody. It's more you're trying to just
execute pitches. So how can I, you know, maybe
give up a run, but I can get 2 outs here and make the ending a
lot faster. What do you feel like you kind
of found after that third? I think it was 9.
In a row. Once you get out of that, I
think it just got ahead and executed.
You know, they were aggressive, like very aggressive and it was
apparent what they were trying to do.
You know, you could see it last night what they were trying to

(23:19):
do Lit and Todd the other night as well.
But you know, they came out swinging every time I threw a
fastball at top of the zone, they're swinging at it.
You know, facing three times in this past month.
The my game plan doesn't change. You know, I'm still going to go
out there and execute and try toget the ball at the top of the
zone, the change UPS underneath, mixing the slider to both sides

(23:40):
and occasional curveball. And, you know, just just one of
those days where, you know, the ball doesn't hit the glove or a
couple to out of the park. Now you guys were pretty, pretty
excited when the first two challenge.
Now I think it's just to keep that momentum going.
Yeah. You know, serious win.
You know, we always talk about serious wins.
We already want it. And you know, we try to go for

(24:01):
this week today it doesn't happen, but we still won the
series. And you know, if you win every
single series at the end of the season, you're going to be
pretty good, pretty good shape. And, you know, obviously, we
would love to sweep 100%, but to, you know, come out fire and
run out of the gates after the stretch we were on going into
the break, you know, flush it today, you know, went two out of
three. Baltimore's better than the

(24:23):
record shows. The lineup's very good.
They pitched the ball as well. And, you know, my tucks come
into town tomorrow, flush today. And, you know, start with a win
tomorrow and then we'll talk about it the next day.
Thanks, guys. They beat himself up a little
over the three homers. Yeah.
I mean, Pep holds himself to extremely high standard.
He went out there. He's still, you know, they put
together two innings, I think some quick runs, but he still

(24:48):
won 6 innings, punched out of eight.
Give us a fighting chance like he always does.
So, yeah, probably comes down toI think 2 of the homers, maybe
we're behind in the count kind of fighting our way back, which,
you know, it's hindsight, but obviously you don't get ahead as
as we preach So. But yeah, he still did a great
job and he's a stud. I just, I know you guys deal

(25:10):
with elements as part of baseball, but between the heat
and the the long delay, just howdoes that impact you guys?
I mean, we're trying to try to let it not, you know, it's, it's
one of those things you can't control.
So just try to stay as focused and locked in as you can and
understand that it's Florida andit comes and goes and we're
going to be back out there. So it's quite a longer 1 today.

(25:30):
But, you know, obviously we had a ball game to play and try to
win. So yeah, you guys kind of
maintain focus to come out in the knife through the rally
against Yeah, I mean, he's one of the better closers.
So, you know, to do that, draw some walks, but, you know,
string, string up like Walsey with the hit and get our chance,

(25:51):
you know, real, real big chance to win there was was good.
So definitely, you know, a huge, huge thing and try to carry that
into the next series for sure. Called the magic the juniors had
lately where you watch them up there at the bases, Ledger or
you think it's something was going to happen.
To you Oh yeah, I mean, anytime he's he's in the box, you think
something something incredible is going to happen That's the
kind of town he is so when. It comes to navigating that
Orioles line up, too. I think sometimes you just look

(26:12):
at the record and kind of forgethow tough that offense can be at
times. Is it kind of where you just got
to just be kind of almost perfect with that lineup coming
and going all day long? Yeah.
I mean, it's ball players over there.
It is a good lineup. So really got to just I mean,
getting ahead is even more key. Sorry, you know, more
unpredictable. So yeah, I think that just try

(26:34):
to get ahead of them and and getsome some quick outs and we
contact early on and end up out and but yeah, it's a good line
up over there for sure. I know you win the series, you
know, you lose today and it's I seem to try to build on that and
roll into the White Sox series now if you kind of come out of
the break strong. Yeah, definitely.
And one of the series is huge. So obviously we wanted to sweep

(26:55):
today, but try to carry the momentum into the next series
for sure. Thank you, Nick to come up and
you get it going and then to getYandi and junior to the play,
probably feeling pretty good at that point.
I mean get get the time run to the plate is kind of the name of
the game of the 9th. We did that, got it going, had
her chance and you know, just unfortunately didn't didn't

(27:18):
quite scratching up across. So you can't hold your head too,
too low on that. I mean, you, you do what you
could. We fought back.
We got runners on. And you know, I mean, junior had
a great at bat. He executed an unbelievable
pitch at 32. But maybe the three I was a
ball. I'm not sure you guys are used
to dealing with the elements. I obviously as pro ball players,

(27:40):
but to have the extreme heat today and then this massively
long Rangeley, how do you navigate those kind of things
and how draining can it be to? I don't know.
I mean, I don't know the formulato navigate it, to be honest.
We're still figuring it out. I guess you just just try to
stay cool when it's hot and thenwhen there's a rain delay, just
try to, you know, understand yougot to go back out there.

(28:02):
So I don't check out, but at thesame time try to kick back and
relax because I mean, it's goingto I mean, it's a long day.
So yeah, I mean, it was hot today.
I thought it as soon as the gamestarted, I thought today was
probably the hottest 1 we playedall year, just how it felt
initially. But hopefully the next couple
day games we can get some cloudsover over our head and that'll
be nice. Yeah, it was.

(28:23):
It was actually the hottest gamefor a race home game.
Yeah, nice. You guys at least got two out of
three of this. I know it's always weird, you
know, if you win the 1st 2 and lose a third, but you won a
series, the White Sox coming in and just kind of like building a
winning series and just stackingwins, right?
Yeah. I mean, you know, at this point,
especially, you know, with wherewe're at in the season, we need

(28:45):
to try to rattle off as many wins as possible.
Everybody in here knows that we're capable of it.
And, yeah, we're just coming outlooking to put up a lot of runs
early. The pitching is going to do a
job and just capitalize on that and try to try to get hot.
Pep always, always beats himselfup, and he didn't win.
But from what you saw, he seemedlike he had a overall pretty
good game. Yeah.

(29:05):
I mean, take holidays. Ball to right center was 95 or
96 off the bat. I mean, it's probably doesn't go
out anywhere but here. I mean, that's just the name of
the game. We have some that are like that
too. That's something to take away
from him. But it's just, yeah, it's just
just how it kind of kind of goes, You know, sometimes it I
mean, today I thought his stuff was electric.
Honestly. He was throwing the ball

(29:26):
probably over the plate more than he wanted to.
And I think that's a problem that you're willing to die or
he'll you're willing to die on. So he's going to go out and give
us good innings. He's going to put it behind him.
I think it him being tough on himself.
He's just kind of who he is and how he how he kind of copes with
things, gets over it and holds yourself accountable.
Thank you. I mean, you guys have had a

(29:49):
really good team winning. You guys like 20 games over 5?
100 or something like that. Right now, I don't know.
I mean, yeah, the vibes here areamazing.
They're awesome. Whenever we step on the field,
we expect to win. And that's just a great feeling.
You know, in the locker room dugout.
I mean, it's always up high energy.
And I mean, it feels like, feelslike we can't lose.
What's it like for you, a guy who's, you know, still a top

(30:10):
prospect in his organization, working his way through being
around a bunch of guys who have had majorly experience recently,
whether it be guys like Richie and and you know, Johnny that
are here on rehab assignments orjust guys that have kind of come
through and a couple coffees here and there.
Yeah. I mean, I'm learning a lot every
day, really, every time I show up, figuring out something that
I didn't know yesterday, you know, that could make me better.

(30:32):
And there's a lot of experience on this team, a lot of old guys.
There's also a good mix of, you know, younger guys like me and
Carson and, you know, we keep the energy up, you know, we keep
keep the vibes going. Yeah, the break.
How did you how did you kind of spend the All Star or I don't
even know. I guess it'll be an All Star
week for years. You guys don't have a game.

(30:52):
Yeah, I mean, I just relaxed a little bit, hung out with some
friends and did that. Kind of took my mind off of
baseball for a little bit. Those, what was it, 3 days and
then flew right back in, got right back to practice.
And it and like with a break like that is it, I mean, how
important is that for you? Just knowing how much of A grind
the season is, to be able to geta couple days off and just kind

(31:13):
of take your minds off things. Oh, yeah, It was awesome.
I mean, it was weird the first day I woke up and I, like, woke
up to no alarm, you know, And it's like, it's like having
nothing to do, don't have a certain time to be anywhere.
It was weird. But I mean, we needed it.
I mean, we play six days a week, have one day off.
And it's like, you know, your body needs a break sometimes.

(31:33):
So it was a good three days. We haven't talked since the
offseason, but your boys ended up when another natty.
How do you feel about? That that was awesome.
And I was there with them. There we go.
We were in playing in Omaha at that time.
That's perfect. Yeah.
So got to see their second game.I think it was against who they
play. UCLA got to see him play then

(31:55):
and then was watching him on TV throughout the series and then
got to hang out with a couple ofguys after they wanted.
It was sick, you know, I was. Going to say that's, that's
perfect timing, right? Yeah, it was once I saw that it
was kind of lining up like that,I was like, OK, there's a shot.
And then I saw that we were hosting the regional and super
and we don't lose at the box. So it's like, it's like I know

(32:17):
they're going so basic phone calls.
Yeah. The last thing, just for the
rest of the season, what do you,I guess what are the main things
for you that you're trying to focus on that you're trying to
hone in on? I know, I know power has been
something that you've been getting, I guess the home runs
and things like that have been showing up recently.
But is there anything specifically that you're trying
to hone in on over these last, you know, couple months a year?

(32:38):
Yeah, I'm just trying to stay where my feet are, you know, not
trying to look forward to the next step.
And because, I mean, once you try to rush it like that, then
you start, you know, anticipating counting that bats
and everything like that, and itdoesn't work out for you.
So I'm showing up every day, smile on my face, happy to be
here, and I'm enjoying it with my guys.

(32:59):
Some bugs, you know. Razor Roof here with rays #1
prospect Carson Williams. Carson, First off, I just want
to get your thoughts about this recent stretch that you've been
on offensively. I know things have been clicking
a lot better. You've been able to drive the
ball on the gap. You've been able to hit the ball
over the fence. What kind of changes happened
maybe within to allow the stretch happiness or anything

(33:21):
that you've kind of tweaked in your bad expense, anything like
that that's kind of contributed? To this, I don't for me mostly
just a lot of a lot of approach stuff at the plate and just
making sure I'm trying to stay to the big part of the field.
And for me, I think, I think thestruggles in the beginning of
the year taught me a lot and it's kind of refined my, my

(33:41):
routine every day. And I think just just a
culmination of, of work and makesure I'm working with our
coordinators and our coaches. And it's just been a group
effort. And I think it's just a hard
work span off. How much of it do you think is
just been the acclamation for you to get adjusted to what AAA
baseball is like? Yeah, I definitely think that
played a part in it. I think they, the pitchers here,

(34:02):
do a really good job of pitchingyour weakness and figuring it
out, figuring out what that weakness is.
And I think when you adjust to them, they adjust to you.
And it's this, this battle back and forth.
And I think it's it's only helping helping the game.
Yeah. To be able to just, you know,
see the kind of success visually, you know, home runs,
double s, things like that. How good is that feel for you to

(34:22):
be able to see, you know, these adjustments are working, they're
producing, you're being able to,you know, do things that maybe
you weren't doing at the start of the season?
Yeah, success always helps, but the the process for me this year
has been everything and just just working on staying more
consistent more than anything else.
Yeah. And then for race fans that
maybe aren't able to watch Bullsgames and things like that, how

(34:43):
much optimism do you think that they should have about where
you're at and where you're goingto be by the end of the season?
I think. I think they should just keep
tagging along, keep hopefully they keep believing in me and
I'm going to keep putting in thework, that's all.
Yeah, I'm sure the team definitely, you know, as well as
the team's plan right now I'm sure is helping out with success
too. Right.
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, as as a whole, the

(35:03):
organization I think is in a really good spot.
And I know everybody here is working hard and everybody in
the rest of the organization is too.
So that's all you can ask for. Razor Roof here with Ray's
outfielder Johnny DeLuca. Johnny, First off, rehab, I know
it's been kind of an up and downcrazy thing, but how do you feel
like you're at in your rehab process right now?

(35:25):
I feel great now, obviously kindof sucked with the shoulder
thing kind of not being able to figure it out.
And I mean, rehab is never fun. But when you are kind of
confused and don't have answers that you want to have and you
know it's no one's fault, like injuries happen and.
But yeah, it was super frustrating not being able to
get back on the field quicker. But right now I feel great and

(35:48):
body feels good. Kind of just recalibrating and
getting games so. How difficult was it to keep a
positive mentality just knowing the kind of ups and downs that
happened? You know, as you mentioned the
shoulder injury and it seemed like, you know, you were here,
you went back to the FCL, thingslike that.
Yeah, no, it's super hard. It's like the hardest thing in
the world. And I'm not going to lie and say
like, oh, it's, it's easy. Like you're in the big leagues
and you're having, but like you want to be out there and playing

(36:09):
no matter what and. I felt like, yeah, it was just
taking a while and I wanted to get back out there and play.
And it's hard to be patient and it's hard to be positive when
you're kind of. Frustrated and confused, so
definitely difficult, yeah. Looking at what big league team
is that right now because I knowthat you definitely want to be
off there and you know, hoping to consider with the team how
you feel about what they've beendoing the season.

(36:30):
Yeah, it's been great. Obviously, like you said,
there's ups and downs to 162 games and.
But I think we're in a really good spot.
I like the guys we have. I think everyone likes the team
we have and so I'm excited to get up there hopefully pretty
soon and contribute. Yeah.
And then the last thing, what are the biggest things during
this current rehab stint that you're trying to work through,
whether that be, you know, I guess just trying to get back to

(36:52):
full health or obviously that's a big thing.
But defensively, offensively, isthere anything specific that
you're trying to kind of hone inon?
Yeah, I mean kind of everything get get back in the like the
biggest thing is the body, making sure the body is in good
shape to, you know, play 9:00 every single day and obviously
not playing for what has it beenthree months.
It just the recalibration of that.
But then yeah, just seeing pitches, kind of getting back in

(37:14):
the timing of things hitting wise and I feel pretty confident
defensively that I feel like that comes a little bit easier.
But offensively I felt like I left in a pretty good spot and
feeling pretty good with my swing.
So just trying to get back to that and get the timing of
everything and just seeing pitches and.
Yeah, raise the roof here with Ray's seems like utility, man,

(37:36):
every man. Richie Palacios.
Richie, First off, how you feeling right now?
I know you're down in Durham after, you know, going through
the injury and all that stuff, but how are you feeling overall
throughout this rehab process? Good.
I'm excited to start my rehab time and again.
I mean, I'm feeling good. I'm glad to be out here and, you
know, take this week to get backinto baseball, like baseball

(37:56):
games and be able to go out there and compete, which I'd
love to do. What's been, I guess what's the
biggest thing that you're hopingto focus on over this first week
as you really get going with rehab here?
For me, it's just continually tofeel good with my knee injury.
As long as I'm running well and through sliding and all that
things I feel well, then I know I'll be in a good place.

(38:16):
I'm sure for you it's it's probably a welcoming feeling to
see a bunch of guys that you've played with at the big league
level on this team. When you came in here, how nice
was it to see guys like Curtis, to see guys like Ben and Johnny?
Yeah, it's good to see my boys, of course.
I mean, I've been rehabbing a good amount of times here, so
I'm getting to know all the guysthat are even in AAA with no big
league time. So it's good to see the boys and
it's good to be, you know, back there, back out there.

(38:38):
Looking at what the big league team is doing this season, how
are you feeling about just how the Rays are doing?
Yeah, doing great. You know, just manufacturing
runs is a big thing, I guess that we struggled with last
year, situational hitting, whichwe've been doing so well as a
team. So excited to, you know, see
those guys doing that during my time and excited to be a part of
it. How much more motivating is that

(38:59):
for you to try to get yourself up back to the big league club
as quickly as possible? I mean, for me, you don't matter
what's going on at that big level.
I mean, I love the game of baseball and I love to play.
So when I'm rehabbing, I'm motivated to get back out there
no matter what's going on. So I mean, but I'm definitely
excited to be a part of a a winning team like we have been

(39:19):
and I'm excited for that. Is there a feeling of relief on
your end to be able to get back out on the field and do baseball
activities and get game action and things like that?
Yeah, yeah, definitely. I mean, like I said, I love the
game of baseball and you know, all my summers and springs, I've
been on the field all day long and that's what I love.
So I'm excited to continue to dothat.
Yeah, and any message for Rays fans, you know, looking at just

(39:42):
just the big league team, how the organization is doing and in
your place and any message for them as you kind of get through,
you know, get this thing started.
Let's just have a good second-half.
That's that's the plan. That's the plan to have a good
second-half. See where that takes us?
Raise the roof here with Rays catcher Ben Work.
Ben. Ben.
First off, how things been like in Durham?

(40:04):
It's good. I've only played here as a
visiting player, but Clubhouse is awesome.
The culture around Durham and the Durham Bulls is pretty cool
to be a part of an embrace. The city is cool, getting
around, getting to see things and then inside the clubhouse is
a great group of guys and it's good staff.

(40:25):
So I have no complaints with howit's run down here and it's
been, it's been good. Now I know that, you know, last
season you spent a lot good chunk of the season with with
with the Rays. This season, not as much.
How is your mentality? Has it changed at all between
last season to this season as you've navigating through both

(40:46):
MLB and Triple? A loaded question there.
I don't think my mentality changed going to Spring, just
kind of lost my way early on in camp and didn't come out as
comfortable as I wanted to. Trying to get better swing wise
and never really found it and never really brought into the
season. So did not go as I wanted up

(41:07):
there, but just as I thought there was just trying to as I
can like help the team the ways I can.
I know I, I catch, I, I believe I do a good job there and
helping the staff as much as I can and just as much as I hit is
is a bonus. I'd love and know that I can be
a better player and hitter and contribute.
So bringing that down here and really just showing up every

(41:27):
day. Serious trying to work on
offensively and changing and getting comfortable and in those
ways. So I feel like I've done a great
job now I'm I'm feeling a lot better at the plate than earlier
in the year and then continue defensively honing my craft as I
can and also being down here just trying to be a good

(41:48):
teammate and help out the young guys as much as I can.
I guess it's weird but everyone says that.
I mean, I'm an older guy now andI've had some experience so I'm
trying to have fun with these guys but also kind of shed some
knowledge as as I've learned andwith my failures and successes
and helping the other guys out so.

(42:08):
How's it been like being around this roster?
Because you have some guys that you play with at the big league
level last season, guys like DeLuca, you know, Johnny,
Richie, Curtis. And then you also have guys like
Carson and Trey that are, you know, top prospects kind of
making their way through. But what has it been like just
being part of this clubhouse andand interacting with all these
guys? Yeah, it's all good.
I mean, I saw everyone in camp, so I know the younger guys, all
the young guys are really hungryand they they work really hard.

(42:30):
A lot of guys have really interesting skill sets.
Seeing the rehabbers. I mean, it's just encouraging
them. I'm just encouraging them.
I've been a rehaber. It can be frustrating coming
back from injury, missing a lot of time, feeling like you have
to perform right away. But when the main thing is just
getting healthy. So it's it's a lot of different
people on their path here, but alot of interesting skill sets, a
lot of people trying to get to the same place and help the team

(42:51):
win. Is there still a lot of optimism
in your mind just knowing that you had success last season and
there's still an ability to replicate?
That yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
I know the player I can be and just trying to get back to that
way and even better. So I know like my first half
last year, I felt awesome. Second-half, I kind of lost my
way, but I know the player I canbe and just try to get back to

(43:13):
that form and, and just I think the main goal is just being able
to stay ready and and help with the help with the teams one of
your names called upon. Raise the roof here with Ray's
prospect Tristan Peters. Tristan, First off this this
2025 season for this team, I think you guys are what, like 20
something games over 5 point? You guys are playing well.
How are you feeling? How's the team feeling right

(43:34):
now? We're feeling good.
I mean, solid group of guys. I mean, it's it's it's a
blessing to play here. I mean, yeah, great, great place
to play at beautiful stadium. I mean, great fans, great, great
people. The Rays organization does good
with people you know. Looking at, I guess your
mentality coming into this season, what, what has that been
and how has that maybe changed over the last couple months?

(43:57):
Yeah. I mean, definitely going from
back from last year down year for me.
But I think just kind of being myself, I kind of went back to
that not trying to do too much. Kind of I've always been more of
like an average hitter. I'm not trying to hit homers.
I know when I get away, when I try to hit homers, I kind of
lose, lose everything else. I might hit one once in a while,

(44:19):
but you know what I mean? But yeah, I know.
I think just staying true to myself, being comfortable in the
box, I think was a big thing that I changed this offseason.
But yeah, and then just really focusing on my defense too, just
I've learned over the last year or so how valuable that can be
in the outfield. And I think that can help my

(44:42):
career in some way too. But yeah, and the staff here is
incredible with all that too. So let you kind of do your thing
and but yeah, they're right there with you.
Yeah, I asked Roark kind of the same question.
But optimism, has that changed at all?
Is that still really high? Like where's your, where's your
optimism been at over the courseof the season?
That's is it something that fluctuates or do you kind of

(45:03):
just try to keep it as consistent as possible?
Optimism as A to for what? Just just like, just like how
you're feeling overall, how you feeling offensively,
defensively, everything in your game.
Yeah, no, I think it's, it definitely fluctuates a little
bit. I think that's just the roller
coaster of baseball playing every day.
Can't have a good day every day,obviously.

(45:23):
But I think I've been pretty optimistic this year's from the
beginning. I think a lot of that is because
of the work I've put in. I've felt comfortable and
confident in my in myself and kind of who I am.
But yeah, I felt really optimistic this year.
Yeah. And then last thing, playing on
a team that is, you know, one ofthe four foremost contenders in

(45:45):
the International League, I don't know if you guys have
clinched the playoff spot yet. But if you guys have and you
have a really good shot at doingthat upcoming, how much more fun
does that make the game? And how much easier does that
make it for you to kind of go through your daily day-to-day
knowing that, you know, when youguys go out in the field,
there's a pretty damn good chance that you're going to win?
Yeah, dude, I mean winning is somuch more fun.

(46:06):
Than losing. Obviously it makes it easier to
play. You play more loose.
The guys are everybody's just feeling good.
I mean it. It definitely gives you momentum
individually too to play the best of your ability.
But I think a lot of the way thewinning comes from, just like
the atmosphere we have here is just a great group of guys.

(46:26):
Nobody's like alone in it, you know?
Everybody's kind of, we just stick with each other, you know?
It's a very powerful group of guys, I think.
I thought Stable did a really good job, you know, through the
five innings and the, the walks got him, you know, the, I don't

(46:51):
know how many balls in the row. I know it was at least 6.
I mean, I think it was 6 becausehe went out for a, a meeting.
So I just know, you know, it was6 balls.
And and you know, when you, whenyou let people on in a good
team, but really any, any team, the free bases, they generally
hurt you. It's the same thing as like if

(47:12):
you make an error, it's free bases.
And we got stung by it, you know, and then we got stung by a
similar situation with Flynn, you know, on a 22 count where he
left an off speed pitch up and that, you know, hurt us, you
know, there and and made it really difficult to get back in

(47:33):
the game when I. Mean just got that correct.
So it's going to take them maybea time or two to.
It's at this level at all times. It's calibration, you know, it's
working on your skills, but when, when you're coming back
off the injury or if you're eventually guy coming down and

(47:54):
rehabbing or even I think in, insome sense, you know me in a
sense, you know, when you come down and now you're playing
every single day, although of course you can do it.
There's some calibration and I think you're seeing it also like
DeLuca, although Palacios I thought had outstanding screens,
you know, today I, I, I was really encouraged by that, but

(48:15):
I, I think there are themes. Yeah, I think there are themes
in AAA and and I just like, I like the word calibration. 1st
result kind of against the run of play the way you've been open
33 really good wins at Charlotteand.

(48:36):
Then you came off. Winning the series, but winning
the last game last Sunday. Yeah, I think, I think we have
really good players and we play a disciplined random ball
because that is what is requiredat the big league level.
And again, the theme with not giving up freebase is not making

(49:01):
kind of the unforced airs where you're you're throwing a ball to
the wrong cut off. Like we play an extremely
fundamental brand of baseball. And I'm an extreme.
I'm to the extreme on getting those things right because of
how much it hurt. So yeah, we have, you know, a
good run. And I think what's great though,

(49:22):
is, you know, I come to the parkevery single day thinking we're
going to win. And I think usually what happens
is we can we play consistent fundamental baseball until the
other team messes up. And and today we messed up,
right? Like we, we made the mistakes.
So we're, I guess we have to lose a game, but I don't like

(49:48):
it. I understand that the Clanahan
is is not going to be available Thursday.
Yeah, he's not going to throw, but I'm not.
I don't know. I'm not on the inside as to what
the plan is, nor do I know any of that outside of yeah, he's
not going to. Pitch so.

(50:10):
What would that? Do to your.
Rotation. We're going to have to make an
adjustment. It's probably Bob we were
talking about earlier, you know,It's probably more, you know,
some sort of bullpen day and, you know, trying to piece that
together. But we have a lot of pictures.
So hopefully the manager can manage that on the way into that
day. A lot of your starters have.

(50:30):
Your rotation was very stable for a long time.
Yeah. About yeah, maybe a little more.
And now all of a sudden it seemslike.
It's in flux again, Yeah. And I think that, so actually, I
mean, honestly, I think the whole year, right.
I mean to be honest with you, like I think the whole year we
had a, a kind of a stable group of starters.

(50:53):
We had one week where we had sixstarters.
You know we had. We had a week where we had six
so that but I think to the outside that might present a
challenge. But for us this is business as
usual. This is a this is a raised way
of doing things and the next guyis learning how to be in those
different roles. So this is something that we're

(51:15):
very familiar with and we're very confident in that picture.
On Shane, is he did he go back down to Tampa Saint Pete?
I don't know where he is. You're not here?
Yeah, the answer is yes, but I don't know if it's, I don't know
if it's a Tampa. I don't know if it's a Port
Charlotte. I don't.
I don't. I don't.
I don't know the logistic portion.
Gotcha on on Richie and Johnny, they're still doing their, you

(51:38):
know. Yeah.
And Richie just came back today to start his back up with you
guys. You, you mentioned that, you
know, his swings were encouraging, but just overall
their, their performances today. How'd you feel about that?
Yeah, I mean, again, I thought Richie, you know, Richie, I
thought really put some great swings on the ball.
We had him Bob 3 weeks ago. I don't know.

(51:59):
But we had him a month ago when when he came back and there was
calibration didn't, didn't feel great.
Went back down, kind of did whatever they do down there.
And I felt like, I felt like today it was different than when
he was here a month ago. You know, I just think that and
he would be a better person to speak on it.

(52:19):
But, but I felt from my point ofview, I, I, I was really
encouraged with, with his swings.
We're going to build him up. And.
You know, get him back into games.
You saw that he he played 7A's today.
This is kind of a raise deal like and then his his next
outing will also probably 7 to 9type, you know, we're we're

(52:44):
we're cautious in terms of building guys up.
I think DeLuca is the textbook example of getting back on the
horse of, you know, he's essentially essentially missed a
year like this whole year. This is whether you want to call
it spring training, whether you want to call it like the
beginning of the season. And so he's going to be doing

(53:05):
obviously a lot of work and working hard and so forth to get
his timing back and his swing where he wants it to be and, and
all that. And also, you know, to get into
baseball shape right where it's day in and day out.
Are there certain things that you're looking for as a as a
manager in terms of confidence, in terms of like, what are you
looking for out of those guys when they're going through a
rehab? Sense good question and and I'll

(53:27):
answer that by saying this is what I look for with all
players, right? Like when it comes to, you know,
the offense, like the hitting, I'm looking to see if they're on
time with the pitches, right? Like, are they identifying and
being on time with the fastball? Are they identifying off speed
or are they still kind of missing the timing?

(53:48):
It's OK to swing through them, but I'm looking at the timing
and how the body moves in that situation on the defensive end,
you know, for a Duluth or a Palacios, if they're at the
outfield, I'm looking at their brakes.
I'm looking at how they run. If it was an arm deal, I'm
looking at how they throw, but I'm I'm looking to see really
those first step reactions and and then closing speed, right?

(54:11):
If they're making plays that that you know, they believe and
I believe they should make. And then the bullpen, Paul
pitched well, had a scoreless and and Monty pitched well, had
a scoreless. And on Monty specifically,
because I know, I guess in my opinion, I feel like he maybe he
was a little bit overused at thebig league level.
I know, I think it was like 59 games.
He was used like basically half the time.

(54:32):
How has he been like since he's come back down here?
Guys outstanding. I mean he's he's gotten back
into the zone the way that I wasused to seeing him, you know,
and I don't know what he was doing in the big leagues in
terms of what it looked like. You know, I can look and watch
the game on TV, but that doesn'thelp, you know, you have, I have
to see even the players, the balls coming out high.

(54:54):
I mean, the ball is, is going tohop.
I've been really encouraged by, I call it a slider.
You know, do they call it a cutter or what?
I don't know, slider to me, I'm encouraged by that.
And I, I think he's doing a really good job.
And this is very common. This is very common.
You go up, get your, you know, your experience and so forth.

(55:17):
You come back. You regroup.
You kind of and you go back and you stick it's it's it's very
common. It's it's uncommon to go up and
not come back. He threw a ball 102.
Yeah. So it's like arms looking pretty
strong. I was going to say not a lot of
guys can do that. And not a lot of guys can do
that. And then you consider the left,
the left, the left-handed arm. And that's that's this is this

(55:40):
is I play with Billy Wagner. I mean, this is Billy Wagner
territory. That's that's lightspeed.
And we're back on this latest episode of Razor Roof.
Again, a big thanks to everyone that we talked with, a big
thanks to all the access that we've gotten this season, all

(56:01):

league level. Sincere thanks to everyone for
that. And expect more interviews and
things like that moving forward, whether it be two to three
