(00:00):
But we're today we're talking about Sarah Jessica and Kim
Cattrall because A, I'm watchingand Just like that season 3, so
it feels extremely relevant. B, this is SUS.
But then just like that Instagram just posted like a
kind of like a teasing that Sam is coming back.
I don't think that's true, but it was a SUS Instagram post.
(00:24):
And CI think it is so interesting that the entire Sex
and the City show is about female friendships and these
girls were not friends. So for all of these reasons,
that's why I was having a particular interest to look into
the Sarah Jessica and Kim relationship.
So Sex and the City is one of myfavorite TV shows of all time,
(00:48):
especially the earlier seasons, which we will talk about why
some of the later seasons are a little bit wacky, but it is
always a show that I found so refreshing.
I liked that it was gritty. I liked that it was in New York.
I liked the characters, even though they weren't perfect at
(01:09):
all. The show was not perfect at all.
But it was, again, just so refreshing to see women talk
about sex in such an upfront way.
And I think their depiction of female friendship is really
accurate. They have so many supportive
times, They have fights, they have miscommunications.
(01:31):
Like there's just, they give each other advice.
Like there's so much so much juice in this series and just so
much commentary on female friendship.
The whole moral of the the series really is that I think
that everyone thought that the point was about romantic
relationships and again, dating. But it ends up being really that
(01:54):
the spotlight is on female friendships and I think that is
fucking cool. I will say it's still very male
centered. Like a lot of their female
friendship is talking about men,but like also their careers and
their lives and being mothers, not being mothers and stuff like
that. Aging.
Like they do obviously cover family stuff, like they cover a
(02:15):
lot of stuff, but it's not like it's all decentered from men.
But it is such a pivotal show. Obviously, I talked about it
with Lisa a few weeks ago, that it has had literally profound
effects, effects on New York's West Village neighborhood in New
York, as well as tourism. Obviously, it's spawned 2,
(02:37):
almost 3 movies, which we'll also talk about, as well as a
spinoff series and Just Like That and The Carrie Diaries.
So it is a juggernaut of a like TV enterprise, I guess.
I don't know what I'm trying to say, but you get it.
It aired in 1998. It was created by Darren Starr
who also created Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Emily in
(03:02):
Paris, and Younger, which are all again, very successful.
I'd say Younger maybe wasn't as successful per SE but like those
other shows are truly like culture defining TV shows.
Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place also got spin offs.
(03:23):
Emily and Paris has been a huge success for Netflix.
Huge huge huge and younger. You know it had Hilary Duff son
foster it. To me it was a very good TV
show. Darren Starr purchased and HBO
purchased the rights to Candace Bushnell's work.
Candace Bushnell is the author of Sex and the City.
(03:45):
She wrote columns about dating in New York, and she published a
book of her columns, Just Like Carried in the TV show.
When she first started writing, she was writing in first person,
but she found over time she wanted to move it to third
(04:06):
person just to create some separation.
She said that she didn't really like like that her family and
stuff was reading it. And I also got it like as you
get older, for some reason it just, I feel like with privacy
and stuff like that, it like I even feel this with the podcast.
It is kind of nice to create a little bit of distance.
(04:28):
It is truly a lot based on her real life.
She dated a man called Ron Gillotti, who was a big
executive in New York, which theMr. Big character was based on.
Charlotte, Samantha, Miranda andStanford, which are all Carrie's
friends. Like, obviously she is Carrie.
(04:48):
All of those characters were based on characters in her
columns in the TV show and then in her columns.
So I think that's really cool. And it is still talked about and
discussed like a crazy amount. The fashion, the storylines, the
moral of the story, some of the absurdity.
(05:09):
It is still discussed, especially the feud between
Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall.
But you know, 28 years later, thank you so much for listening.
