(00:00):
So we found out a few months agothat Lauren Sanchez and Jeff
Bezos were getting married in Venice.
And obviously this caused quite a stir because Venice is, I
would say, one of the epicentersof like, overtourism.
So obviously I'm sure this is oneverybody's radar, but just to

(00:22):
recap, Venice has a like historical district that's built
on a bunch of canals. It's, I think it's called like
the lagoon area. There's like 1 road, 1 train
that gets you there. It is like the historic area.
So tons of churches and just extremely old buildings,

(00:43):
etcetera, etcetera. It's a really, really small
population that lives there and they have a really unique
measures put in place around their real estate.
Pretty sure you like have to bequeath your property to a
family member. So it's nearly impossible to

(01:03):
like just buy property in this area.
But unfortunately over the last you know how many years,
probably a lot, but it seems really exacerbated in the 2020
S. Venice has become such a hotspot
for tourism. They have built a huge cruise
ship port and it's just insane to me that a place that is this

(01:27):
small has a cruise ship port is basically what I'm trying to
say. I went to Venice this year and I
tried to be a very ethical tourist, but I was just shocked
because you can walk through thecanal part like over a day, like
it takes a couple hours that it is some some square footage.

(01:49):
But it is a very small, very, very small area.
And it's an island obviously, orlike a series of islands.
So it is very limited in space. So I just think it is so crazy
to have cruise ships come in there.
It made me like really sad when I went there in January, a
January was definitely the time to go because there was like

(02:11):
virtually no tourists there. But be the thing that was so sad
about it is that the entirety ofdowntown or like not downtown,
like the historic district is built for tourists at this
point. So basically it is like the
classic kind of European apartment style buildings.
And then on the bottom of the buildings are shops and like of

(02:37):
course some are grocery stores and post offices and like stuff
like that. But like 9 out of 10 are tourist
shops just Hawking like truly like Alibaba quality shit and
and they're all the same. They all have the Venetian
masks. They have the Murano glass or

(03:00):
Burano glass, can't remember. But like they have the Venetian
glass, they have the masks. But all of the stores are just
the same. The Venice residents, especially
the ones I think that live in this lagoon area, have been
protesting and trying to come upwith different ways to stop this

(03:22):
over tourism, like adding an attacks and all of this stuff.
But I don't think it's really helped.
It's really hard when you can have these really big cruise
ships. And the problem with these big
cruise ships stopping in is justthat they don't spend that much
money in the cities that they stop in.
And again, they're just kind of there for a few hours and then
they leave. It's the same in my city.

(03:45):
I was talking to this with Kirsten Mcinnis on Mess Magnets
this week. But her and I, she doesn't
anymore. But her and I live really close
to our cruise ship port. And it's like the tourists come
in off those boats and like loveand light to these folks.
But like, they come in, they walk downtown.

(04:10):
They might go up Government Street, which has like a strip
of tourist shops, and then walk back to the cruise ship.
And along the way, there's all the sites, of course.
But you're not really, you know, that's not really spending time
per SE immersing yourself in theculture and spending money.
So I do think it, tourism is obviously a big part of our

(04:32):
economy as well as Venice's economy.
But I don't think we've really struck that balance between
being a thriving community and having tourists there in a good
way. But invitations for this wedding
went out a few months ago, and there's been, you know,
discourse ever since. The invitations.

(04:52):
So the ones that have appeared on the Internet are literally
something that I could have madein Canva.
They are like, honestly kind of like a papyrus font with stock
cartoon images of Venice. And it just says in lieu of
gifts, can you, like, donate to these charities?
All the charities are ones that help preserve the area, which is

(05:16):
really interesting. But like, for some reason, I
feel like this invitation is fake because there's just
there's actually no way in hell that a wedding, this $200
million wedding could have invitations.
This Bab. Thank you so much for listening.
