SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
Hi everyone and
welcome back to the Real Food
Stories Podcast.
I'm Heather Carey, and today Iwant to do something a little
bit different.
I want to take you behind thescenes to share what I have been
building, why I created it, andwhy I believe this space is
going to change the way womenexperience midlife.
(00:22):
Now, for the last couple ofepisodes, if you got on there
and took a listen, I've beentalking about food, our
kitchens, and the importance ofjust not giving up on cooking as
we get older and into midlifeand menopause, because we still
need to take care of ourselvesmore than ever now.
And food is really one of theconstants in our lives, right?
(00:47):
It's something we have to doevery single day: breakfast,
lunch, and dinner.
And we might as well make itcount because it does count for
so much when it comes to ourhealth.
Now, it's one thing to talkabout the food and the cooking
and to tell you how to meal planand just create good eating
(01:08):
habits.
And it's another to show you howto actually do this and to put
it into real life everydaypractice in your own kitchens
when you are busy, when you arestrapped for time, when you are
stressed out, or when you justdon't feel like cooking.
Now, to put it into perspectiveand practice and learn how to
(01:28):
create and build habits thatstick and that you actually look
forward to is something thattakes some time.
It's a practice.
And we all need help with this.
We all need guidance.
I've said this a million timesbefore.
If you did not learn how to cookwith your mom or your grandma or
(01:49):
someone holding your hand in thekitchen, how do you know how to
cook?
How do you know what real goodfood is, actually?
Because it takes some mentorshipin a way.
I mean, I went to cooking schooland I went to cooking school for
health supportive cookingspecifically.
(02:12):
So I learned everything at thatschool.
I mean, I had other relativesand and you know, aunts and moms
who cooked in the kitchen, butand I was always a curious kid
in the kitchen.
But my skills came from cookingschool.
(02:32):
So it's not easy sometimes toknow exactly what to eat and how
to eat it and how to prepare it.
Now I have been teasing a littlebit here and there, but today I
have been working on somethingbehind the scenes, and I finally
get to share it with you indetail on the well-nourished
(02:55):
woman community and the newofferings that are in there.
And I'm so excited about this.
And I hope after this podcastand listening to this that you
are too.
Now, you might know me as aculinary nutritionist, right?
I talk a lot about food, I talka lot about cooking and how we
(03:16):
eat can change everything inmidlife.
But the truth is, our lives areabout so much more than what's
just on our plate of food.
You know, what what we are justputting in our mouths every day.
And that's exactly why I wantedto first create the
well-nourished woman community.
And I did that a couple monthsago back in the spring.
(03:39):
Now, the well-nourished womancommunity is a free space.
It started out free, and it's aspace where I wanted to gather
women together so we could talkabout all the things that happen
in midlife, not just the food, and that's really important,
obviously, to me, but everythingelse: the good, the messy, the
(04:00):
confusing, the funny parts ofmidlife, not so funny parts of
midlife, that no one reallywarned us about.
I wanted to create a safecontainer where we could just
share and have conversation andhave community.
Because let's be honest, midlifeisn't just about hot flashes and
(04:21):
hormones, and should I eat soyproducts to get phytoestrogens
or should I go on theintermittent fasting diet,
right?
It's about relationships.
It's about your aging parents, your grown kids who still need
you.
It's figuring out who the hellyou are after all of these years
(04:42):
of putting everyone else first.
It's really all of it.
And my goal has always been tocreate a container so we can all
talk about it in there.
And nothing is off limits.
Let me give you a littlebackground about why I even
created the well-nourished womancommunity in the first place.
Now, when I first started movingthrough my own midlife journey
(05:05):
back in my 40s, perimenopause, dabbling with menopause in
there, all of it, I feltcompletely blindsided and
unprepared for what I was comingto experience because there was
no roadmap.
Nobody talked about it.
(05:27):
Literally nobody talked aboutit.
I went to my primary caredoctor.
I've told this story a milliontimes on this podcast that she
told me that she would rather goto jail than get on estrogen.
I talked to a number ofgynecologists, all who had
different opinions abouthormones and what to do and how
(05:50):
to manage perimenopause.
And let's not get started onjust my friend group and just
like community, local community.
I mean, nobody was talking aboutit.
I get a few whispers about hotflashes, or maybe a joke, or
it's something that we just hadto get through and we just had
to struggle with for a couple ofyears.
(06:11):
But no one was really saying, hey, here's what's happening to
your body.
Here's what might happen to yoursleep, your mood, your
confidence, your energy, yourweight, all of it.
And that silence was deafeningto me.
So I remember thinking, if I'm anutritionist, if I live and
(06:32):
breathe women's health and I'mstill this confused, me, what
are the rest of us supposed tobe doing?
So I started havingconversations and I created this
podcast around it, realconversations with friends, with
clients, with women.
I have interviewed many women onthis podcast about it, who are
(06:52):
all saying the same thing.
Why didn't anyone tell me thatthis was coming?
And that's when I knew I wantedto create the space that I
wished I had had a decade ago.
A place where we could talkabout food and health, yes, of
course, but also about all thereal stuff that comes with this
season of life.
(07:13):
And that's how thewell-nourished woman community
was born and how I finallycreated it back in the spring.
Now, let me get into a littlemore detail about what the
well-nourished woman communityis and why it's different from
other platforms you might see, especially social media, okay,
(07:37):
because you can get all sorts ofinformation on social media.
I mean, you could just drownyourself in it all day long.
And now that the cat's out ofthe bag, so to speak, and now
that celebrities like Oprah andGwynneth Paltrow and have made
menopause more of a thing, youcan just drown yourself in
(07:59):
information.
So I know firsthand that thereis a lot of bad information and
false information.
I wanted to create somethingthat was off social media, okay.
No ads, no scrolling, and createsomething that wasn't just
another online group that you'lljoin and forget about two weeks
(08:23):
later.
It's a living, breathingcommunity built around
connection and honesty and a lotof support.
And inside of it, I've nowexpanded things and I have
created three different spacesin there, each designed to meet
you where you are at.
So I wanted to go into detailjust to get clear on what it is
(08:46):
and why I'm so excited aboutthis.
Okay, first, there is themidlife lounge.
Now, this is a free space.
It's kind of like our cozylittle living room, okay, where
we can talk about things andgather and really talk about
anything and everything inmidlife.
Food, yes, but alsorelationships, careers,
(09:10):
menopause symptoms, friendships, purpose, body image, sex life,
grief, joy, nothing is offlimits here.
Okay.
I mean, again, my focus is onthe health and well-being of
women at this age, but this allwraps around it, right?
(09:32):
You can't do one without theother.
So you can't have be in goodrelationships if you're feeling
absolutely miserable with yourhot flashes.
You can't have a good career orfriendships or on and on.
So I wanted this to feel likethe space where you can just
take a breath and exhale, whereyou can ask questions, share
(09:52):
stories, vent, and be realwithout worrying about judgment.
Because I can tell you firsthandthat if you're thinking about
something that's on your mindwith hormones and symptoms and
any of the things I justmentioned, someone else is
thinking about that too.
(10:12):
So this is a space that has nojudgment.
Okay, we are all in thistogether.
And I wanted to have women feeljust less alone because we've
all been here, right?
We've all, and honestly, we'rejust better when we do it
together.
So this space will include someweekly prompts and maybe a mini
(10:36):
challenge or two to me to gentlyget back into your kitchen or or
live events, okay, where we canget on Zoom and have a
conversation about a variety ofdifferent topics.
So that's my free space.
Then there is the nourishedkitchen, and this is what I've
been sort of alluding at for thelast couple of weeks, and what
(10:57):
I'm very, very excited about.
Now, this is a paid membershiparea.
It doesn't cost that much tojoin, but it's where we go a lot
deeper.
And this is where we talk foodand all the things that surround
it, okay, where we can cooktogether, eat together
virtually, and reconnect withfood as a source of strength and
(11:20):
joy and not guilt and confusion.
Okay, where we ditch the diets, where we just get into the real
world about eating and how to doit successfully and how to enjoy
it and have fun.
So in the Nourish Kitchen space, there will be live cooking
classes that are real anddoable, not fancy or fussy.
(11:46):
Okay, this is about just cookingin the real world so we can eat
healthfully and also enjoy it.
So this is the food thatactually makes you feel good,
that you feel like you're doingsomething right for your body.
We'll have monthly foodiechallenges to inspire you to try
new flavors and new habits andnew skills in the kitchen.
(12:07):
You can ask me anything youwant.
Nothing is off limits in thiskitchen space, okay, about
tools, equipment, the bestthings to buy.
I get it.
It's confusing.
Your kitchen can be as confusingas menopause itself.
So there is no limit to what youcan ask me.
(12:29):
And I want to offer a lot ofsupport around cooking in
midlife because our needs havechanged, right?
We're not eating and cooking thesame way we did when we had a
couple kids living at home andwe were just pumping out food,
right?
We're our needs change now.
Our weight is changing, ourmetabolisms are changing.
(12:51):
So we want to pivot a little bitso we can feel good with
ourselves.
And again, no one's reallyteaching us how to eat for this
season of life in a way that'sjust realistic.
Okay, you can jump on socialmedia and find 5,000 diets that
will lead you down a road tonowhere.
(13:12):
So this is where food becomesself-care again.
Okay, so this is the nourishkitchen.
It is a paid membership, and I'mgoing to get to all those
details at the end.
And finally, there's the VIPspace.
Okay, and this is for women whowant more one-on-one support.
(13:33):
So this is my coaching part, more personalized guidance
around nutrition, habits, lifestyle, goal setting, and any
specific health concerns thatyou may have.
Because when we get intomidlife, it's not just about hot
flashes and night sweats, right?
A whole host of things canhappen with our health in our
(13:57):
40s, 50s, and 60s.
Okay.
Our rates of heart disease startto go up, diabetes, cholesterol,
cancers, and we need to knowexactly how to support ourselves
in this time with our health andour food and our movement, and
and we can feel overwhelmed andstuck.
(14:19):
Okay, so if you feel like youneed more one-on-one support,
this is the space to do it.
Okay, and we can talk about thatalso a little bit more and how
that works.
So, together, these three spacescreate something really special,
a layered community where youcan come in, connect, learn,
(14:40):
grow, and feel seen.
All right, so I want to sayagain why community I think
matters so much when it comes towomen in midlife and menopause.
So I created the well-nourishedwoman community because I know
what it feels like to be thewoman who's done everything
(15:02):
right, eaten well, exercised, managed her family, her career,
and still feel like she's lostherself somewhere along the way.
Now, we've spent decades caringfor everyone else, right?
And then one day we wake up andrealize who's taking care of me?
(15:22):
Is it my turn to be taken careof now?
But who's doing it?
Then comes the next realizationthat the one person who's going
to take the best care of you isyou.
Now, sometimes that's easiersaid than done, right?
When we are out there givingout, it is much easier sometimes
to focus on everyone else thanto have to focus on ourselves.
(15:45):
Because the world doesn'texactly give us permission to
slow down and to prioritizeourselves or to talk openly
about what's happening in ourbodies or our minds or our
lives.
And that's why this communityexists.
Because midlife isn't somethingto get through.
It's something that we have toexperience, and we don't get
(16:06):
through it, right?
It's something that stays withus for pretty much the rest of
our lives.
And as I see it, it's a time toreclaim your joy and health and
your curiosity and connection.
I am really craving a lot ofconnection right now, and and
this is just one way to do itbecause I know that we cannot do
(16:29):
this alone.
And honestly, I don't want to.
I don't want to do it alone.
I don't want to be suffering insilence.
So that's why, again, I builtthis space and because I felt
like I needed to, and I feltlike other women really are
feeling the same.
All right, let's talk about someexpectations of the
(16:50):
well-nourished woman and thenthe midlife lounge and the
nourish kitchen and the VIPexperience.
So here's what thewell-nourished woman community
is not.
All right, because I don't wantyou to get confused and think
that this is like another diet.
It's not another like diet indisguise.
All right.
I'm not gonna tell you exactlyhow to lose 10 pounds in two
(17:15):
weeks and to starve and suffer.
Okay, that that's not my scene, and I'm not gonna do that.
It's not a space where we havethese perfect before and after
pictures on the internet and andclient testimonials like that.
And it's not about comparison, absolutely not, or about
(17:35):
competition.
But here's what it is (17:36):
it's
where we get real, it's where we
learn, we can share, okay, andwe can talk about things that
might make other people squirm, but we do it together because
midlife is complicated and it'semotional and it's full of
changes, big ones.
(17:59):
And pretending otherwise doesn'thelp anyone.
I hear from a lot of womensometimes, they're just like,
oh, it's just something we needto get through.
It's just something like we justneed to tough it out and get
through.
And and I imagine that theirmoms also were just the same and
they suffered in silence aswell.
And and it's just not the case.
We just don't have to do that.
(18:20):
Now, in this space, we're gonnatalk about hormones and sleep
and weight, of course, but we'realso gonna talk about boundaries
and relationships and identity, and we talk about what it means
to want more, to have some kindof dreams, to talk about what
our purpose in life is, just tofeel good in our own skin.
(18:40):
So I want the well-nourishedwoman community to feel like a
home base, a place you can cometo when you're tired of the
noise on the internet and thefads and the fake perfection
that's everywhere online rightnow.
It's just overwhelming.
So here it's about real women, real food, and real life.
(19:01):
So if that sounds like you andyou are craving community,
please come and join.
Now, here's the exciting partthe doors to the well-nourished
woman are already open.
Okay, and I'm gonna put thatlink below, right?
We've been open since spring.
And the other spaces, theMidlife Lounge, the Nourished
(19:24):
Kitchen, and the VIP are openingofficially on November 1st to
everybody.
Now, I am offering today and forthe next week a special
founder's price for thenourished kitchen, which is the
paid part of this membership, because I want people to join
(19:45):
and I want you to get excitedabout it, and I want there to be
an amazing community of womenwho feel as excited as I do
about this.
If you've been listening to thispodcast today and saying, like,
yes, like this is what I've beenmissing in my life, like real
conversation, real food, connection, then this is your

special founders price.
And I'm just offering this for aweek.
Okay.
So just think exclusive cookingsessions, printable guides,
recipes that you can have, andjust a whole bunch of surprises
(20:28):
that I know that you'll love.
I think, you know, as the thecommunity develops, it's just
gonna get better and better.
Most of all, you'll be part ofsomething brand new, something
honest and alive and built forwomen like us who are ready to
thrive in midlife, not justsurvive it.
Okay, so that's the story behindthe well-nourished woman.
(20:49):
It's more than a community, it'sa movement, if you want to call
it that.
A reminder that we are not done.
We are not invisible, and we'renot meant to go through this
season alone.
So whether you come for the foodor the conversations or just the
company of other women who getit, you are so welcome here
(21:10):
because nourishment isn't justabout what we eat, it's about
how we live.
All right, I am going to put allthe information in the show
notes.
Okay, the links to sign up, thelinks to get more information
and to get going on this.

anymore.
